Distinctly Average - Could do a lot better. Second time this week. Was there on Wednesday and again on Saturday. Wednesday was a good experience but Saturday we were met with the fire alarm going off. Not a good start. Service at first was good but then dropped off as the evening went on. Was left for 20 minutes waiting for a drinks order and eventually had to go to the bar to get attention and found 3 members of staff chatting. The food was extremely average. Goat cheese starter was over cooked on the outside and frozen on the inside. Main courses were all over done with the exception of the goulash . The "golden batter" was more a deep dark brown than anything and the chicken dishes were all dry and overcooked. The chicken burger was cremated and extremely dry but the bun and salsa was extremely stodgy. Presentation on Wednesday was really good but our meals on Saturday reminded us of school dinners extremely poor. basically thrown on a plate. All in all not a very good experience but the potential is there , as demonstrated on Wednesday. A little bit of extra time in preparation and presentation would help along with some new oil. All in all not good value for the money paid.

Ten years ago this review would have been quite different, unfortunately The Kilmarnock Arms bar food/restaurant was terribly disappointing. I can only guess that Covid, lack of staffing and inexperienced kitchen staff are having a great impact on the food. Our first attempt to eat in the restaurant left us baffled, the restaurant was empty as was the bar but we were told that they were fully booked! We made mid week reservations only to be sat in the bar, the restaurant was again empty and judging by the three waitstaff we saw it must have been due to lack of staffing. Our meals were pea and ham soup followed by seafood platter (husband) and chicken schnitzel (myself). The soup was excellent, the mains were not. Every piece of seafood on the platter was deep fried and unrecognizable as to what it was, the crab cake had no crab in it. My husband ate less than half of the food. The chicken "schnitzel" was actually a breaded piece of chicken (schnitzel is pounded flat before being breaded and fried) smothered in a thick cheese sauce, served with chips that had some kind of spices strewn in top and boiled vegetables. Even the tasty soup could not save our evening. I would not recommend The Kilmarnock Arms for food but they keep a delicious pint of beer.

We visited Sunday 14th for lunch. The service was fine, the food was anything but. I ordered the steak pie, which tasted ok, but was cold in the middle, so I put it back. Five minutes later I got it back, the same pie, reheated, under the grill I assume, as the pastry was black. Burnt in fact. So back it went again, and so we left quickly after that. The two portions of fish we ordered were equally as bad, the fish was tasteless and batter was black. It makes you wonder why you even go out to eat these days. So if you ever visit Cruden Bay, don’t bother visiting this place. The restaurant was empty, and now we know why.

Waitresses lovely service however food was disappointing. Ordered starter which arrived after 35 min and had no seasoning on batter for fish platter. Another 30 min wait for steaks. Asked for two medium steaks and they both came well done and no seasoning. The waitress did offer to have steaks replaced but didn't want to wait another 30 min. Disappointing in food.

Had a lovely meal here on 22nd February. We both had the battered haddock which just melted in the mouth, I had a full portion and my wife had a "granny" portion, as she can't eat a large portion. The waiting staff couldn't have been more helpful! We both had creme caramel to finnish, which again was deliciously creamy and the top crisp. Can't praise this establishment too highly.

Husband and I went to the Killie for dinner as we hadn't been for a while. Nice cosy atmosphere and the service was excellent. There only seemed to be one waitress on and she was very good, attentive without being intrusive. Husband had the fish and chips and said the fish was lovely and fresh. I have the butter chicken curry which was tasty and the small nan breads were very nice too.

The pub is large, which is good because if you prefer a busy spot or a quiet spot then you have options. The food is fresh and delicious with lots of local ingredients. The staff are also great about lighting all the fires, so you have more of a chance of snagging a spot by the fireplace. Excellent selection of whisky, and Cruden Bay is a lovely place to walk around at night.

It must have been one of the coldest days of Autumn so far. We were well dressed for our walk in the nature reserve but when you stood on the grassy knolls looking out to the North Sea, the wind whipped through you like you were wearing curtains. The Lounge Bar of the Kilmarnock Arms sported a glowing, warming stove. More than enough to warm us through after a bracing North East walk. And we decided to stay for dinner. We opted for fish and chips. The beer-battered haddock was delicious: it melted in your mouth around the perfect firmness of the haddock. There was an accompaniment of thick chips, peas and a generous bowl of delicious tartar sauce. If Bram Stoker had this before he got down to writing Dracula, no wonder it fuelled his imagination!

We stayed in Cruden Bay five nights, and ate here twice, though once was take out. Wonderful food, pleasant people in a very charming setting. I personally had the Scottish salmon (when in Rome), which was excellent. The other in the group raved about the fish and chips, and Killie Currey. The mixed grill, consisting of chicken, sausage, sirloin, and a few other things, was devoured by one of the dinner companions. I'm guessing it was delicious, as it lasted about as long as one searches for a golf ball in gorse.

Went for meal in the lounge bar Sunday 7pm.The lounge was about 60% full but we never seen a waitress until we were there for 8-10 mins.after finally being seated it was about 10 mins before our order was taken. We ordered haddock &chips; and a mixed grill.30 mins later our food arrived and we then discovered our (frozen) chips were way over cooked with no potato left in them. There was no sign of a waitress for about 6-7 mins so we could tell them but meantime our food was getting cold and we had started to pick at it since we were hungry. We told the waitress about the chips and my onion rings which were also over cooked and slightly burnt and she went away to the kitchen returning about 5 mins later to say that they were making fresh chips.i said to her it was really pointless now as what was left of our food was near cold. She told me there was a problem in the kitchen with being too busy etc. I told her that I don’t usually moan unless there’s an issue but the service and food was not good on this occasion and it was not a nice experience for us.another thing I would like to mention about the portion size of the chips was very scrimpy.they came in a little ramekin dish on each plate which held about 12 - 14 small sized frozen chips. When emptied onto the plate it looked a pitiful amount especially alongside the fish.

I visited this establishment this afternoon with my OH. The food was excellent and the service was great. We are served by two young girls who were very accomoating and welcoming. The atmosphere was comfortable and the log burning stoves made you feel as if you were at home. However, as we were enjoying our coffee an older gentleman appoached the fire and started complaining, he then continued to tell the girls off for not keeping an eye on the fires and letting them run out. After he left the girls set them both again and they were running fine, for the hour that I was in I had been watching the girls whilst they were rushed off their feet attenting to their customers and making sure everything was running smoothly, which in my experience is exactly what should be happening in a restaurant and although the fire is an excellent addition to the atmosphere it is not the main priority. Our meal was delicious however the atmosphere was ruined by this gentleman was rude to the staff about something which at the time was not their main priority.

Cruden Bay itself has more than people would expect. The golf course is world-class, and the 'Bullers of Buchan' - a remarkable set of rock columns set round the sea inlets, with seabirds galore - make it well worth a visit. Dunottar Castle is not far away. So the Hotel makes an excellent basis for visiting the area. The dining room is old-fashioned in a good way. The menu was excellent when we were there, and the food was good and well-served by pleasant staff. We have visited this restaurant several times in the past and have eaten in the restaurant. We checked the menus, on line, before we went and was satisfied that we wanted to order from the main menu. On arrival we walked straight to the rear of the lounge to where the restaurant is located and asked a member of staff for a table for two. She told us that we would be shown to a table. A moment later a lady member of staff took us back into the lounge bar and seated us. We were given menus, but they were the bar and grill menu only. I asked if we could have the full menu and was told that this was the only menu. It was a disappointment, we were looking forward to good dining, but had to settle for pub grub, at restaurant prices. It was a let down. If you do decide to eat here at lunch time, beware, they only serve food until 2 pm. A family of 5 adults and 2 children arrived at a minute or two after the hour, and were turned away.

Sad to see some of the old favourites such as Rob Roy Chicken replaced on menu by more 'upmarket' and higher priced dishes. Most people eating in the bar do not want to be paying £18.95 for a main dish or £8.95 for the cheese & biscuits.Given it was so quiet on a Saturday evening, while another local hotel was mobbed, says it all. Please keep it simple, your usual excellent quality and friendly service rather than attempting to be 'fancy'.

Had a bad lunch with my family today. Wanted to sit at the window seat overlooking the road but was initially told very brusquely by a young waitress that the table was too small for my party which consisted of two children, an infant who required a high chair and two adults. Because of her manner I said I would remain at the table, however, another waitress came along and explained politely there would not be enough room for the plates and I happily moved. I ordered the large fish and chips which I have eaten on many occasions in this establishment. My grand daughter also had the same. She immediately said her fish tasted funny and would not eat it. I tried mine and the batter tasted as if it had been fried in oil or fat that had been burnt. I am not a fussy eater and just had the fish and left all the batter. I said to the waitress when she asked if everything was ok and she offered to take it back but by this time I had had enough and said it would be ok. Her immediate response was that they had served a lot of fish before we had ours and had no complaints. We then ordered a sweet. My daughter ordered the strawberry cheesecake. She had eaten a good bit of the sweet when she noticed on end of it green marks that looked like mold. We immediately drew the waitress attention to this and she said it was just green marks from the tin it was made in! We had previously ordered coffee but decided to leave. When I paid the bill she did not charge for the sweets. Due to meal being spoiled I requested a refund on the fish also. She then proceeded to argue that she had spoken to the chef and he said the fish was perfectly ok and they had served a lot of the same before we had ours. I said that that was perhaps why the fat was bitter. She refused to acknowledge my complaint. I am really disappointed in the service today - I am not interested in what happened with other people only the food I was served. Another point was the chef came through the bar during the meal arguing with a waitress. I think you need to train your staff better. I did try to contact the manager or owner but was told I would not be contacted before Monday, hence the review.

We have just had a really great meal at the 'Killie'. The restaurant has a good atmosphere with lots of old photographs of Cruden Bay on the walls and original wood flooring. The young attentive staff were well versed on the menu and efficient in their service. The food quality was well above that you would expect for the price or the hotel grading. This was not our first meal here and it will certainly not be our last.

We had very enjoyable lunch. Great fish and chips and my balmoral chicken was excellent. The log fire in the lounge was an added comfort. Worthwhile a visit. Thanks

We popped in for lunch on a Saturday and were really impressed! Lovely, cheerful, helpful staff and great food! We shared the black pudding scotch egg, which was lovely. The haddock and the chicken Maryland were equally great. Chips were amazing!Dog friendly as well & ours was quite happy to be fussed over.

Good food, great staff and comfortable rooms. Our golf group stayed here a few nights and if we come back to the area we won't stay anywhere else.We ate a number of breakfasts and dinners here in the bar and dining room, all were good. The staff were super friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were cosy and all at probably the best value we found in Scotland.

Tried Kilmarnock Arms last weekend and both me and my partners meals were absolutely delicious, I had the haddock and chips and it was one of the best I have ever had. Definitely better off sitting in the bar as dining room very quiet and lacks atmosphere. Staff generally very attentive and friendly- very impressed.

We stayed here for a couple of days and had the saffron cheese cake for dessert the first night and then again on the second night. I sure had we stayed a week I would have had it seven times no matter where w had dinner! The rest of their menu was great as well but after a month I still remember the cheesecake.

The bar area where food is served is much more relaxed. If you are just visiting and don't want to feel like you have just walked in on something you shouldn't have then the quieter bar is much better. The drinks are reasonably priced with a good selection of whiskeys. Occasionally there is live music or karaoke in the working mens bar which is decent. There is only one takeaway in the village so bear this in mind if you think you might like food throughout your evening. The food here is delicious with generous portions and averagely priced.

Stopped by here after a walk along the beach and Slains Castle.Toilets were clean which is a huge plus knowing this is kept immaculate.Ordered a pint of beer and a ginger beer/lime, both were very good.We ordered fresh Peterhead breaded fish and chips which was melt in your mouth fresh.Would recommend stopping by as the rest of the menus looked great in this country pub :-)

What a pleasure to visit the Kilmarnock Arms today. We were late, nearly 2pm, when they stop serving, and I was VERY hungry. Welcomed with open arms. Seated in the very comfortable lobby in front of a roaring log burning stove, whilst they cleared us a table.Fantastic whisky list.Beth had the stuffed pork fillet, and I messed with their side dishes, and had cauliflower cheese, fresh vegetables and chips; followed by cappuccino. The place was warm and welcoming and I'll be back. Compare and contrast with last night's experience at the Boat Hotel in Boat of Garten...

We have eaten here a few times before and our expectations are now quite high. We were not disappointed. One of our group can only eat gluton free and wheat free meals with no dairy produce. This location is one of only a few that can provide a good three course meal that meets these requirements. We were served by Arlene, who is aware of our requirements and went out of her way to please, ( many thanks Arlene). The only criticism was that there were no potatoes available to provide an alternative to those included in the menu dishes. It was not a big problem as rice was available as a good alternative.

We arrived after a coastal walk for lunch in the bar. I had double checked beforehand and was pleased that we could bring our dog along. When we arrived the staff were very friendly and inviting, even happy to say hello to our dog and give her a treat. The food was lovely, portion sizes were big. Great selection of whiskies at the bar, will have to come back to try them all!Thank you to all the staff on shift on Saturday 6th August 2016.

The quality of the food of this restaurant is the best I've tasted in northern Europe over the past 5 years.I happened upon this place on a rainy Sunday of July: it seemed one of the many Scottish pubs however it was detected a wonderful surprise. The place is a traditional Scottish pub but the food is just fabulous. Even the desserts were exceptional both for elegance and quality.

Nine of my family and myself went here for a celebration meal, we were definitely not disappointed. Eight had chicken and one had a steak dish, they all commented that the food was delicious.Myself I opted for the Mixed Grill and it was superb, very large helping. The service by the waiting staff was also excellent, will definitely return to this restuarant in the near future.

Visited on Sunday Evening with friends and all staff we encountered were polite and professional. The starter of scallops black pudding and pepper sauce were delicious and the ravioli was also very good. Our main consisted of 2 steaks cooked to our preferences, fish was excellent and large portions and lastly the chicken with duxell mushroom and salad looked really nice. Deserts were brilliant and mango cheese cake enjoyed by all.Yes we would definitely return

We were very impressed with the quality of the food as we were expecting a normal pub grub. Definitely consider the set menu, and considering the amount of food you get, it offers great value. Two in our company had the curry and absolutely loved it. The banana fritter sticky toffee pudding was apparently pretty spectacular. Service was excellent, our servers were great chat and very helpful. Very impressive whiskey selection too.

The Killie Arms went out of their way to accommodate my company of 9 at such short notice. We only had a 30 minute wait for a table but it was worth the wait when our meals came. The mixed grill was exceptional, the steak was cooked to perfection. Those of us that had the fish & chips told me it was delicious. Excellent value for money. Great entertainment in the bar as well.

The chippy is just up the road from us but we probably only pop in to get chips once a month to go with a meal we are making. The chips are always good these days, as is the service and the staff are really helpful. On more than one occasion I’ve seen them going above and beyond to help out a member of the public. Also really pleased to see the phasing-out of polystyrene trays and plastic bags in favour of paper and cardboard over the last few years. Fish could always be bigger but you could say that about any chippy these days and the last few fish I’ve had have been really good. Highly recommended.

Good things : This cafe is in a great location and offers plenty of seating outside which is ideal for those with dogs. Not so good things : The coffee was ok although pricey for the size of cup. Cakes were nice enough, but had too much buttercream icing. Bad things : The layout of the tables inside is a bit congested. The volume and choice of music appears to be for the benefit of the staff because we, and those around us at other tables, to raise our voices to have a conversation.

Disappointed with the cappuccino which was weak milky coffee which I did not finish. Lovely lady who served and made my cappuccino but she was no barista. Been here many times before but this is definitely my last cappuccino.

Been here twice on our break to Deeside. Staff really friendly and helpful. We had coffee and tea on our first visit with a slice of cracknel. Tea, Toasties and cracknel! (again) again on our second visit. Although we only had snacks which were very reasonably priced the food being delivered to other tables looked first class.
