Khaosan Road Thai Tapas in York

We felt very welcome from the minute we stepped inside and asked if my allergies and vegan dietary restrictions could be catered for. The restaurant felt inviting and our table was cosy near the window perfect for our date night. My partner and I both selected 3 dishes and shared sticky rice and vermicelli noodles. As I am allergic to nuts, sesame, coconut and poppy seeds I was offered an up to date allergen menu checker which helped me to make safe choices. I was impressed that even the wine list was clearly labelled with vegan wines. I always trust a restaurant when I see this attention to detail. So often I have to ask and staff can often be uninformed about vegan wines. The food was amazing! I savoured every dish and couldn't pick favourite. I chose the Makua Pad Prik (fried aubergine with sweet chilli to dip), Tod Mun Kow Pode (sweetcorn fritters) and Laab Tao Hoo (crispy tofu with thai herbs and lime). We ordered more wine and beers as we thoroughly enjoyed those too! Staff were attentative, friendly and approachable and our evening was lovely. The decor was pretty, menu's and plates were too. We will definitely recommend and would like to return again with friends and family or another date night! We saw plenty of families, work parties and couples. It is very popular but e didn't feel rushed or forgotten about. My partner chose ribs, beef floss and prawn with glass noodles. Great place!

I went to Khaosan Road Thai last night (Oct 2024) and thought it was great! The restaurant is so beautifully decorated and the staff were incredibly attentive and professional. The food was out of this world! We ordered 2/3 per person with some rice and it was so lovely to share a mix of dishes between our group of 5. All the food was delicious! I will 100% be going back!! Highly recommended.

So this is a bit controversial but I’m only giving this place two stars. Dined here yesterday for lunch. The restaurant recommends 3 dishes per person which as you can see from the photos aren’t massive and the prices certainly aren’t cheap What I found is the meats here are very fatty, but not to the point where it’s super tasty. It was just mostly fat (beside the chicken). This spoiled 2/3 dishes for me. The kuay dish on the receipt there was 5/5 and superb. The venue itself is lovely although a bit dark and the seats aren’t overly comfortable. Service was fine but nothing special. I really strongly dislike when an optional tip is included on the bill. Ok but wouldn’t be returning with so many other establishments nearby, especially for the price.

Superb Thai food, in a lovely little friendly restaurant! Well worth the money, I just wish I lived closer! Papaya salad was a winner!

The food and the Thai iced tea were all amazing and the service was very fast. We especially liked the noodles, aubergine and the ribs.

This was a great place and for food i would still highly recommend it. Service has somewhat deteriorated to nothing but a fast food outlet, little time to enjoy and savour the exquisite flavours, with a pressed and rushed experience during this visit. Time of visit less than 40mins..

Food great, service not so much, service staff seemed rushed, no pleasantries, or even basic conversation and no sales/suggestions. That's fine if that's your style, but that 10% service charge needs to disappear.

taste alright but the food portion is so small. For the Tom yum soup we paid 10 quid but only got an incredibly small portion and with no rice served. Would definitely not come back.

I found this place online as was staying in York for few days so booked up. On arrival you are greeted with a wonderful array of smells and pretty decor. The selection of food was very good and when it arrived it was absolutely amazing. We ordered 7 dishes to share between 2 of us and we didn’t quite manage it all, but every dish was fantastic and I could’nt pick a best one tbh, they were all so good. When I come back to York I will definitely be booking again.

Been here for many times Very nice environment, lovely staff but always small portions. Never justify the price. Order yum salmon today; cost about £11 with an egg yolk on the top. (Didn’t mention uncooked ) told them to cook it later it arrived, got refused. So left unattended. Also told us to tip them as well. Don’t understand how they don’t know to fry an egg 😑

Fantastic food my only complaint is the portion size!

We booked in here for dinner last minute and were blown away by the food here. Having tried countless Thai restaurants across the country, we can truly say that the food here was exceptional and far exceeded our expectations. Particular highlights were the prawn pad thai and the duck & mushroom spring rolls, but each dish we tried was delicious. Staff were also attentive and kind. There are many Thai restaurants in York, but you will not be disappointed to try this one. We will 100% be back when next in York!

Food was incredible. If I could eat more I would have. Tapas food bowls work so well when you don't know what you want! Service was top tier and the place is gorgeous too!

While we found the atmosphere warm and inviting, and the service excellent we didn’t feel we received good value in the amount of food in each dish. Compared to other restaurants in York, we felt overcharged for what was provided and to get enough to eat required us to spend more than expected.

Enjoyed a family meal with friends on a Sunday afternoon. Easily has to be one of the best Thai meals I’ve ever had which includes ones in Thailand. Service was top notch as nothing was too much to ask for. I think I’ve found my new favourite Thai restaurant ❤️

Absolutely loved the food and the service! Never had a Thai Tapas before but what a way to enjoy the variety of cuisines.

Cain made the experience even better. The atmosphere was lovely, the food was great and catered well to vegans and a prawn allergy - which isn’t easy!

Didn't book and they managed to fit us in (I'd advise booking!) Amazing menu, food was great, and would recommend trying the Thai red; surprisingly good. 10 out of 10. Would recommend

What a super Thai restaurant we found for our evening meal. Fresh food , flavoursome, and delicious dishes. This is a Thai tapas menu, which is extensive and dishes cover meat, fish, and vegetables , thai curries, and lots of starters and sides. We went for a selection, and all are graded with heat, so you can choose how you like your taste. If you want it hotter or cooler, just ask, as the staff were very helpful. Two of us ordered 6 tapas plates from across the menu that were recommended. We then also ordered 2 rice and 2 Thai curries. It really was a good atmosphere and full, so book ahead early to get a table.

The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The food was so tasty and good portion size. We were able to try multiple dishes. The Thai wines were lovely.

Brilliant service, my waitress bea was amazing and so attentive. She drew me in and pointed me towards the gang panang nua with yum yums, which was the best food I've ever eaten. Thank you so much bea, this waitress deserves a raise she was truly a mind reader! I have recommended this restaurant to my friends and have told them to ask for bea to serve them.

I've never had Thai food before but our waitress Bea gave us such a lovely introduction. She was very knowledgeable about the menu, and went the extra mile with her service! I'd recommend coming with here with your family if you ever want a scrumptious meal :))

We loved it here. Such a pretty restaurant, small and intimate with nice decor. The food was amazing - the flavours! So tasty and a great selection of dishes. Love the tapas idea - we tried 7 dishes between 2 of us. The staff were very polite and friendly. I haven’t stopped recommending this place and I can’t wait to go back.

Visited last night with my mum, the beautiful interior wows you to start with followed by the delicious food. Very attentive service , special shout out to Kane! Great food recommendations! Love the tapas concept so you can order and try more dishes between you. Highlights probably has to be the Penang Curry, Massaman Curry & the Battered Mushrooms. We will be back!

Top Notch ! I can say in all honesty that this was the best Thai food I have tasted ! All the dishes were above all our expectations The service was excellent and resturant was full of people enjoying their food ! If your visiting York and like Thai food you will not be disappointed ! We shall be visiting again and again !

First visit here for my partners birthday, food was delicious , very friendly atmosphere, what made it a really good night out was the young man called Cain, we were A little baffled with the menu , he talked through every item on the menu and explained the difference in all the dishes , very helpful , very patient with lovely manners , thank you so much for making our night out so enjoyable.

Amazing and authentic Thai tapas. Everything was perfectly balanced, the portion sizes were exactly right. The pork shoulder, especially, tastes exactly like one I had in Hong Kong. Amazing service also, we will definitely be coming again!

An absolute gem. Delicious Thai food, and the tapas approach is great to try lots of different dishes. Dishes are about £8 each, making a meal for two around £60 so not unreasonably priced for the area. Added bonus that many of the dishes are available gluten free or adaptable for other dietary requirements. Would be great if even more could be gluten free.

Very disappointed.Food has to wait a long time .Then had to rushed to eat it as they needed the table.Never even got chance to have a sweet.Plus it was cold.Had been before and it was lovely that's why I went back

Food took over an hour to come out and it wasn’t even all of it. On top of that, it was cold when it arrived. The restaurant was clearly over capacity, but staff didn’t say there would be a wait. Very little or no regard for the customer experience, disappointing to say the least

Just had the all you can eat Tapas . We were able to try 14 different dishes , as the plates are small delish . Absolutely full now but very reasonable priced at 25.00 pp. Fabulous food

They are trying to do a great thing here! Very cool atmosphere. Some dishes were better than others, but even the lower end of their culinary spectrum was above average and their best dishes were superb. Very authentic Thai with some things you are unlikely to find anywhere else! The green curry and the duck were standouts. They were a little overbooked so make a reservation and expect a full house most nights.

Beautiful food, great service, perfect treat!

The reason I came to this place as it looked so nice and cozy from outside. The staff is also so welcoming however the only option I struggled with was vegan options. Though they had quiet a log of vegan and vegetarian options in the menu upon checking found that they fry everything in the same oil which depressed me a bit. Finally they could do me a pad Thai they said which was on point nice hence 3 stars.

It's amazingly decorated with flowers and the small space makes it seem super cozy. The food was brilliant some of my favourites were the broccoli (I would put the exact name but I will butcher it), the crispy beef, crispy chicken and the crab coconut noodles. My only improvement would be for the duck, I prefer it a bit more pink but it was still lovely. The menu recommended ordering three plates per person so, my partner and I ordered six to share (as it's tapas) but to be honest the portions were a bit bigger than we were anticipating! We ate everything but definitely needed a food coma afterwards. The price is pretty good and comparable to other food venues in York. The staff were lovely and super friendly, quick to sit us down and get us served with drinks. As well as dealing with our terrible mispronouncing of the dish names :). Can't wait to go back.

The best Thai I had in a long time. And they’re “tapas” (small portions) which means we tried 10-12 different plates (we were a group of five). The red and green curries were to die for, and everything else was fresh, tasty, well presented. A lovely place too, and the staff was super friendly and welcoming. 5+ stars

Firstly the decoration of the restaurant is so pretty!!! The women serving us were so sweet, so polite and friendly!! The curry’s were also delicious, the flavours are like no other. The only thing is the portion sizes are slightly small, which is fine but for the price it could end up being quite costly. Other than this, everything was perfect. A 10% service charge is added to the receipt just so people are aware before they go.

Food was pretty good but massively overpriced. We spent over £100 on food alone for four of us and we all left hungry. Very cramped and the toilets were in an awful state. Wouldn't go back.

The restaurant was lovely and the staff were pleasant, however the food was cold and over priced. Three plates would make up a normal size Thai meal at a restaurant. Here that would cost you £30. Not worth the money. We orded a beef curry which cost £10 and there was only 5 small pieces of beef on the plate. Shame as it could be a lot better. Left the place hungry still after spending £75.

Excellent value service and most delicious food

Absolutely delicious food with lots of options across veggie, meat, and seafood. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated adding to the experience as were the plates and presentation of the dishes. The staff were really accommodating, we mentioned to them that we were short on time and they were able to ensure our food arrived quickly which was so helpful! Highly recommend!

Honestly, it was the best meal I've had for some time. We went as a family of four with two kids and enjoyed everything we ordered. I would highly recommend Khaosan as somewhere to get great food where you recieve great service.

Fantastic place. Been there many times but first time with new menu which we loved. The food was really the best Thai food I have ever eaten. Staff were all wonderful too. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Good taste but rather on expensive side. Missing napkins at the table - you need them when you got hot dish ;) Only korean beer...

The Thai tapas was good, and quite authentic. A definite must try place. The service was good, but can still be improved.

Great little restaurant with fabulous food

Food very average. Had quite a wait for food. Menu looked good, probably too much choice for the chefs to deal with but not enough fresh/Salad items we thought, everything seemed fried. No spice... Thai cooked by non Thais for western tastes? Quite pricey for what the quality. Definitely would not return.

Popped in on a Monday night and got served very quickly & food was delicious! I went for the Chicken Massaman & Duck spring rolls! Highly recommend!

Great food and the tapas style dishes work brilliantly.

Service was excellent and staff super friendly. We arrived at peak busy-ness without a booking but left our number and they called back soon after to give us a place. Food came quickly and was all fantastic- really great flavours in everything. We got four dishes and a side of rice between two of us which felt like a perfect amount (though they recommend three dishes each). Such a great idea to have it as a tapas- feels like a fancy takeaway. Interior is very cute (albeit a little cramped in certain seats). Definitely recommend and will be coming back!

This is probably the worst Thai restaurant I’ve ever been to. The food is extremely expensive yet the quantity and quality do not live up to its standards.

Quality food, good portion sizes. I'd say choose at least 3 dishes per person, defo go with the prawn crackers whilst you look through the menu. Staff are lovely and very helpful... let them recommend something for you because why wouldn't you listen to someone who works with the food everyday. The flavours are insane.

Disappointing and very average 4 friends on a Monday night, the setting is lovely and we were excited as we’d read good reviews. Unfortunately this did not match our experience at all . The dishes are on the small side for the price (and yes, I know it’s tapas) , one of our friends received her dishes and was long finished before the rest of us even got ours. We had to ask twice and waited for what felt about 1 hour. Drinks service also very slow. In particular the glass noodles with crab meat looked less than appetising and pre-digested and were most certainly not fresh. All of us agreed that mostly food tastes bland - which is not at all what you’d expect from the beautiful fresh and vibrant Thai cuisine. All in all very disappointing. Show less
