I visited Kenwood today and was looking forward to a light lunch . The cafe had been refurbished during the COVID lockdown and I was shocked about what was offered compared with what it was like before the refurbishment.. No, freshly cooked lunches - just a couple of choices of very unappetising choices which looked as if they had been sitting there for quite a while. One offering was a tiny piece of salmon with a bit of side salad in a box costing over £11 !! Not what I would call value for money even if it had been freshly cooked. What a disappointment. It used to be a fantastic cafe with freshly cooked tasty food . I'll remember to bring a picnic next time !

This café is set to the side of Kenwood House. It was very busy...and we had difficulty find a space. Also many tables had not been cleared! We chose a simple lunch of quiche and sausage roll with lovely salads and nice dressing. Both were very tasty. Water was self served from large water fountains well flavoured with Lemon, cucumber and plain....very tasty too. When we finished we carried our dirty trays trying to find somewhere to place them....none of the staff ventured to assist! We left with a feeling of not really being cared for.....what a shame.Strong and observant supervision is needed!

. . Let’s start from scratch; I had my wedding reception here in 1988. Since then, The Brew House has changed hands a million times and passed through numerous quality cycles. In 2019 it’s currently run by Searcys and definitely on a ‘downer’. Many of the reviews here say it all; ‘poor service’, ‘cold food’ and ‘unloved’ – set against the gorgeous backdrop of Kenwood House. How can a café that used to serve the best carrot cake on the planet be reduced to little more than a canteen for mass catering? The answer is simple; you have a captive clientele that on a sunny day creates a café with ‘standing room only’ for the price of a small house. Yes, it’s not cheap either. I’ve been here for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. The cooked food is low-ish quality and often stewed for hours. As I said, in another review, you can judge a café on the quality of its sausage. Scrimp on the pork and you’ll lose my custom. The Brew House ‘sausage and mash’ is extremely average and proves my point. On the plus side, it’s slightly better than the cafés in the Royal Parks (Hyde and Regent’s) but damning with faint praise is hardly a recommendation.

They are now offering a never-changing soggy salad bar, and that's an improvement. Come on Searcy, get a clue. Give us freshness, color, taste, imagination, pleasure, comfort. Pay your staff better, make them proud of what they do. If you don't know how to do it, ask some of your customers to tell you how lovely this place used to be. Alternatively, read the reviews!

Since Searcys take over from Company of Cooks there has been a continuous decline in standard of food and drink. Coffee weak, soup thin and tasteless, staff change weekly so knowledge is non existent and leads to complications when ordering. Cafe at times has been too cold to sit for long, but the last straw this morning was yesterday's sandwiches which were stale. I looked for the sell by date which was not shown except for "eat on day of purchase " which basically absolves them. There are similar comments to mine here but it ain't getting better.Wake up English Heritage and terminate the contract.

I'm surprised to see negative reviews for this cafe. I've been to museums and galleries all over Europe and the safest (and cheapest) bet in their cafes is a beer (or coffee), a sandwich and a bun, which is my choice whenever I have a snacky lunch here. A museum cafe has to be ready and staffed up for anything from 50 to 500 customers, all day, seven days a week, and will be priced accordingly. For a restaurant experience I go to a restaurant. The leafy courtyard at Kenwood is a joy on sunny days after a visit to the fantastic (and entirely free) Kenwood House and its world-class art collection. I believe the cafe is run independently by Searcy's caterers rather than by English Heritage.

I only risk the mediocre coffee these days and my daughter refuses to visit what used to be one of her favourite eateries. The 5 star location is what brings me back.

Given that there are a million great places to eat in the vicinity of Hampstead, it was only exhaustion from our walk which entrapped us at the Brew House. Still, I expect from English Heritage something a little beyond the ordinary. The hot food looks like something left on a hot plate on the Titanic. We had the fish (cold), the squash stew (lukewarm, consisting of overcooked vegetables and a thick, gloopy sauce), and the sausages (lukewarm, unbelievably fatty, smothered in the same gloopy sauce). This is the sort of cooking I used to see when I first came to Britain in the 1960s. I really expect better from English Heritage. The cakes were okay, but smothered with frosting that had clearly come out of a spray can.

I have been visiting the Kenwood cafe all my life. Since the franchise changed a couple of years ago, it has seen a very sad decline. Previously, it was a place where I always felt looked after, with kind and efficient staff and a lovely atmosphere. It is now frequently unpleasant to visit, with stressed staff who raise their voices at each other and at customers, and no management or staff training in evidence. The queues are long, and they run out of standard items (today it was wline.) Although there is no competition within Kenwood itself, the Spaniards Inn is only 10 minutes walk away - and sadly I have now decided to defect there instead from now on.

This review relates to Brew House Cafe only. I love coming to Hampstead Heath for walks and usually have lunch at Brew House Cafe near Kenwood House. I am a coeliac, and, despite a steady deterioration in food quality under Searcy (also documented in other comments from long-time visitors), it was never a problem to have a gluten-free hot meal, including my preceding two visits in August. That is, until my last visit yesterday. As it was never an issue in the past, I simply asked the server to confirm that a salmon filet on the display was gluten-free. His astonishing reply was that, while it was gluten-free, he could not give it to me because they have only two ovens and cannot guarantee that the salmon was not contaminated with gluten. When I asked if there was anything gluten-free that I could eat in this cafe, his reply was "nothing". I asked for the manager's name but he did not give it to me. In the mean-time, the kitchen chef walked by and said that I could eat both the salmon and the potatoes, as both were gluten-free. My joy lasted only for a second, as the server told him about the contamination in their oven, and the chef changed his position and said that I can't eat the piece of salmon I wanted to order because their food was cooked by third party suppliers and they could not guarantee that it was gluten-free. So there was nothing to eat for me at all in this cafe, for the first time after many years of regular visits. On the way back, I stopped at the ice cream kiosk and asked the sales girl if any of the ice creams were gluten-free. She had no idea about the ingredients in her ice creams but said that, since there was nothing for me to eat at the cafe, she could not give me any ice cream either, as her kiosk belonged to the cafe. I find my experience unacceptable and incomprehensible in the modern age, when even every pub in the UK can recommend gluten-free dishes, not to mention restaurants. Can the Kenwood House management please raise this issue with Searcy (or - even better - replace them, the sooner the better).

Firstly let me make it clear that this does not relate to Kenwood or Kenwood House which are outstanding destinations of the highest quality and deserving of the highest praise. It relates to the restaurant only and I cannot understand how so outstanding a venue could allow itself to be dragged down by such an abysmal restaurant. The location is marvellous and the staff are lovely. It is a wonderful setting in which to meet friends for a walk and a chat but you will have to pay for this pleasure with your palate.I visit this restaurant regularly as I live not too far away from it and walk there with friends at least once a week. I have reviewed it unfavourably in the past and it has deteriorated since my last review of a year ago or more. If it is a coffee and sandwich you are after you are best off bringing your own and eating it on a bench in the park.In short: The bread used for making the sandwiches is rubbery, never crisp, often chewy. Several sandwiches are provided on white bread only and none on wholemeal so that more health conscious folk will avoid them as well as the mayonnaise which seems to be a primary ingredient of most, but not all sandwiches. The fillings have become so sparse that on several occasions I have had to return my sandwich as there was barely anything inside. The staff, always kind and helpful replace these with a smile but often with a fresh sandwich which is only slightly better. What a pity to spoil the experience of a visit to Kenwood with such a let down.

Promises so much...accessed via stone steps down into semi- courtyard, then wending in through passageway, which opens out into high-ceiling end, some mural adorned space. Food quality was good but arrangements of available food/drink/utensils not always logical. Chairs/tables easily lead to congestion as tightly packed as soon as more than dozen seated. This could be a real gem - most of walls are bare - surely some posters/artwork could be displayed? Needs a fresh eye cast over it for a complete re-vamp. The garden/courtyard area is delightful but, again, needs a re-think. Main criticism is for the state of the ladies' toilets which were in a disgusting state. At least four of the lavatories were unusable, goodness knows when they had been last inspected (this was at 12.30 pm ) but by the look of it hours earlier. It made me ashamed that visitors were subjected to this. The one which was useable was also so ancient that the staining had clearly accumulated over years. The hand basins were filthy, the floor dirty...I could go on...surely, in the 21st century London can provide a sanitary environment in a public place? Fix it - English Heritagr - pronto.

it's always a pleasure to visit, and we always treat ourselves to lunch when we do. The queuing for food was a bit chaotic, and although staff were generally helpful, the overwhelming number of people made it quite difficult to deal with getting food in an organised and non stressful manner. But, when that finally happened, the food was good. Nothing stellar, but way above average. Put this in an amazing setting like Kenwood house, and you have a pleasurable day out.

On previous occasion the breakfast has been fine if not mediocre, may be we just had this on their bad day recently. The scrambled eggs way over cooked and rubbery, the two nicely browned cumberland sausages were pink inside, bacon very dry and tough, one small mushroom, baked beans fine, some reason spinach was added to the plate that had not been washed and was gritty. The included tomato was not cooked enough and was hard. Toast was soft and difficult to cut and supplied with one butter that only filled half of a slice of the two included. The spoonful of preserve inside of a glass jar at the till was 75p so not purchased out of principle! The pots of tea were tasteless and watery! The breakfasts were returned though thirst got the better of us for the tea. Pigeons appear a nuisance and will eat unattended toast on plates given the opportunity. Also no control of children from parents who should know better than to allow them to bounce on small branches of bushes that not only allowed dust and pollen to drift over to those eating but would damage the plants. Despite the inconvenience the manageress was friendly and amicable to resolve the situation.

Despite visiting on a very rainy day I would recommend the cafe at Kenwood House - although I'm told that the queues for service can get very long on a nice day. The selection of cakes looked excellent and my companion had a very tasty slice of cake with her tea. I don't think that my choice of a salad was the best thing to have for lunch - I wish I'd chosen the salmon which looked delicious. Generally the hot dishes looked better than the sandwiches and salads. My companion's sandwich was a bit stale.None the less a delightful place to visit in very lovely surroundings.

I lived in London for several years long ago and cherished my long walks up through Belsize Park and Hampstead to Parliament Hill and across the Heath. Kenwood House, at the north end of the Heath, is a gem. The house was designed by the famous Robert Adam and his brother James in the late 1700s. The south facade looking out over the Heath is one of London's memorable sights (as is the vista one enjoys once one reaches that facade and turns around to look back over the Heath.) The cafeteria in the lower east end of the house has good food and snacks. I enjoyed a hot cup of tea on a cool, late Sunday afternoon in mid-March with a friend. The sun was dipping low and our warm drinks soothed us as we sat at a table in the garden and chatted. It's a lovely place to enjoy a tea or coffee any time of year. And the lawn behind the house, sloping down onto the Heath, is a wonderful place to bask in the sun.Make a point to visit if you're in London. Either walk up to Parliament Hill from Belsize Park and then up to Kenwood, or walk across from Highgate. I favor those approaches compared with walking over from Hampstead Village.

Food at the Kenwood House cafeteria is pretty good, but the real attraction is the outdoor seating, where dogs are welcome (and present in abundance). The main part of the Kenwood House, upstairs, is an art museum that's definitely worth a visit. And the trails to Hampstead Heath start right outside the door.

We braved the crowds to get a quick cup of tea and some cake which was delicious. This self-service canteen has some great dishes but we will have to try them another time. A good tea-time stop off but the tables are in short supply at busy periods. A walk in nearby Parliament Hill should work up your appetite or walk off the cake.

We had cream tea outside the cafe. It cost around 5 pounds for tea, a scone with clotted cream and honey. They tasted just nice. There was a cherry blossom tree in bloom. The weather was not so great as it rained for a while and was gusty. The view would be much better if there were tables in the opposite side of Kenwood house.

Such a gorgeous place to have lunch, or just tea and cake. In the summer, you can sit outdoors, in the winter there is indoor seating. It is always busy, so do plan your visit and your timings. The views of London, as you walk up to Kenwood House are beautiful and stunning, even on a grey rainy day. The place is filled with benches with uplifting inscriptions, old and young people, families, dog walkers. Basically a cross-section of London-life. The restaurant caters for all tastes, soups and salads, hearty lunches, or a quick sandwich, it's all there, and is good quality too.

Haven't eaten here since Searcy's have taken over. Went for a light lunch after a walk on the Heath. At 12.15 there were no kids lunch boxes prepared and we were told it would be another half an hour. We chose the soup of the day, potato and leek which was pretty tasteless and certainly no real hint of leek. The bread was clearly at least a day old. The brownies we had purchased were dry and the biscuit my son chose was clearly stale not crisp or soft and chewy, just soft and crumbly. This place used to produce decent food when run by previous groups ( company of cooks) as I recall. Shan't be eating here in a hurry. £30 was not a fair price for what was on offer. Avoid.

In outbuildings of Kenwood House "The Brew House" with terrace garden and yard, this is a welcome place to have coffee, cake or even a light lunch whilst visiting Kenwood House, or walking around Hampstead Heath. However, at weekends it is a scrum, and you have to queue for food and then for a seat especially if the weather outside is wet and, as when we went, everybody wants to sit inside. A scrum but a fairly civilized one. People even apologise for you swooping in to take their soon to be vacated table. A bit disorganised. The young staff are willing but overwhelmed.Cake nice. Coffee good.Nicer during the week.

How could this place be messed up so much? This was such a smooth operation with wonderful staff, food and ambiance. Now the queues are unmanaged, the food is lacking inspiration, the cake choice has shrunk, portions are smaller and the prices have rocketed. The customers are hungry from the Heath, so just provide good nutritious value for money food and you will be rewarded with loyalty. As a regular, I am highly reluctant to go back again as we are spilt for choice with good places to eat around here. Please pull your socks up!

Such a shame that the surroundings are so lovely and the building in which the restaurant is situated so attractive and yet we came away feeling rather ripped off and disappointed. Searcy have clearly made the changes for their benefit, to maximize profits, not for the sake of providing a better service to customers. The old self-service system made sense in the setting and meant a larger choice of food. Now the table service means waiting for 10 - 15 mins (on a quiet weekday at 1.30, presumably even waiting times are even longer at the weekend) for your hot main course. There are only 3 main courses available now and the choice of salads has also been reduced. When I mentioned this to the staff I was told that we now provide freshly made food delivered to your table - what twaddle. Are they saying that each portion of pasta, stew or whatever is made from scratch for each customer , I cannot see much difference from having it in hot serving bays at the counter from serving it up in the kitchen, feels like a marketing and , as I say, profit - increasing exercise. Also the food was not of the quality one would expect for the high prices. I had over-creamy rather tasteless broccoli and Stilton soup and a tuna mayonnaise sandwich with bread that was within a whisker of stale, certainly rather dry and unappealing and paid over £10 for the pleasure. My partner paid over £11 for a modest serving of beef stew with winter vegetables, which took nearly 15 mins to arrive. Sorry to see what has happened to a venue we loved calling in to when walking on the Heath, won't be going again , or not at least not until the present caterers lose their concession.

We visited the Brewhouse Café today and I was very disappointed in the lack of service here. My daughter received her sausage and mash (no veg!!) and had eaten it 40 minutes before my husband and I received our pulled beef burger. We asked twice how much longer it would be and were told 5 minutes on each occasion...obviously a standard reply. Surly staff said ' what do you want to do'!! When it arrived the order was wrong but we were too hungry to complain and wait another 40 minutes. For the money (£42 for 3 of us) we could have had a much more pleasant lunch experience elsewhere..which is a shame to say because the setting and being able to sit outside was delightful.

This venue is in a beautiful setting in the grounds of Kenwood House. As a family we have been going for walks on Hampstead Heath and stopping there for either lunch or a cream tea for many years. We loved it! However recently we have noticed that the sandwiches have gone up in price and the fillings have shrunk. We realised that there had been a change of contractor from Company of Cooks (excellent in our experience) to Searcys so we wrote off our experiences as a once or twice bit of bad luck. However on our most recent visit we were angered by the disorganised queuing 'system', surly service and once again poorly filled sandwiches. My smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber sandwich was missing the cream cheese and the two slices of cucumber were tired and unpleasant. The other sandwiches had all their ingredients but were sparsely filled. After an age in the queue, combined with the awful service and poor, expensive sandwiches i'd had enough and complained. Many emails later between myself and the manager of Searcys and the General Manager of English Heritage I have been assured that they are aware of problems and are working hard to resolve them. I really hope so because we love this place and in the short term will not be back.

The food offered by Searcys was really disappointing. The place is very busy on the weekends so there really is no excuse for the complacency of the kitchen. It gives the impression Searcys are cynically making money as quickly as possible and have no interest in returning customers. Saturday lunchtime and there were no vegetables other than potatoes so I had a boxed superfood salad that was small and tasteless with a very sugary dressing. My friend had a baked potato that was also lacking in any inspiration. The Kenwood House garden is absolutely lovely but we won't be eating at Searcys again until they change their approach.

The Brew House is a cafeteria-style eatery next to Kenwood House in Hampstead Heath that claims to offer 'traditional food with a rustic twist'. It can be busy, though the interesting, decorative interior offers some distractions while you queue to order. The menu is very limited but the meals all sounded (and looked) appealing and reasonably healthy, including two or three few vegetarian options, which is always nice. We were not disappointed with the spicy bean soup, vegetable tarts and Stilton-and-cauliflower bake. Felt like we had won the lottery when we stumbled upon a table in a shady, delightful part of the garden. That was the highlight.

These comments relate to the Brew House Restaurant at Kenwood House, Hampstead Heath, London as managed by SEARCY's. I would hate anyone to confuse this with any other restaurant. My parents taught me that if I have nothing good to say about something I should say nothing so I will be very clear. I live not too far from Kenwood House and once a week I take a constitutional walk up the Bishops Avenue with a friend, we have a sandwich at the restaurant and walk back home.Although the place is always packed which might put the lie to my impressions, a lot of people there might be in the same position are we are every week. The Heath is wonderful and it is a place one really wants to be. The hot food at the restaurant just isn't appealing except for the soup with a nice wedge of bread which seems quite popular. The cakes and pastries are also very appetising and for those who are not calorie counters I am sure they are great. We are quite health conscious and are really only after a sandwich. Often we just bring our own in desperation. We have complained several times to the very sweet young lady who now manages the restaurant and she is charm itself but clearly not in control of the quality or variety. Still, if one is happy with mis-labelling, mayonnaise, white bread and high prices this is certainly the place for you. The tea and coffee are fine!

Kenwood is a great place to visit, especially after a walk around Hampstead Heath. It's hard to believe you are so close to central London. We've always enjoyed going for lunch or tea at Kenwood and were rather concerned when the management of the cafe changed after 20 years. However, the new people are doing a pretty good job - the quality seems to have been maintained and they have extended the range of lunches. Our only quibble - the new arrangement of the cabinets in the serving area means that there is less space and it's not so easy to see what is available.
