I visited this cafe several years ago and I remembered it as OK but the decor was a bit "twee". Anyway, my wife, myself and another couple, had lunch there more recently, last Sunday. We drove separately and planned to meet there. I arrived first and discovered almost every table was reserved. However one of the staff - maybe Kath herself, I don't know - very quickly put two small tables together and assured me that even though both were reserved we would be able to have lunch before they were needed. The others soon arrived and we ordered. By this time it had become busier, but our food arrived very quickly and was rather good. We all had a light lunch - salad, beans on toast, scones, soup etc. It was all very nice and the price was reasonable. I found the staff to be very friendly, efficient and helpful. The only slight problem was that it was very cramped inside and at times we had to squeeze almost up to the wall to allow people past our table. While having our light lunches other customers were tucking into roast dinners that looked very good, so we may return and give that a try. Judging by the reserved signs, we may need to book on Sundays.

I'm sorry to say, i didn't enjoy my first visit to Kath's one bit and am amazed at all the good reviews. The staff were miserable and didn't crack a single smile between them, I was made to feel uncomfortable when i didn't have enough cash to pay for a sandwich - they don't have a card machine, but do take cheques! (1985 called - it wants its payment options back!) and then I waited over 20 minutes for a coffee, which they had clearly forgotten about. When i enquired about my missing coffee, the lady just said, (without so much as a smile or an apology), "I'm catching up with orders", but she wasn't...she was cleaning tables. With so many other nice places around Derbyshire that offer a smile with your coffee, there'll be no need for me to come back here.

It's been a long awaited return to Kaths. We generally visit spring to summers end. Today we ventured to Bakewell and when my wife mentioned lunch I said Kaths. Her smile said it all. I had the ploughman's ( Don't think 2 ploughman could finish it all) my wife had homely pie that looked and smelt delicious (apparently it taste delicious but I didn't get to try). Kath and staff thank you all food service choice standard fabulous. If you want great produce prepared and delivered well this is the place. By the way I honestly don't know how those cyclist ride their bikes after eating those wonderful scones talk about hill climb energy boosts. Once again thanks and see you soon( wished I lived nearer).

Ignore the few negative reviews and visit this cafe for either a hearty breakfast, good meal, coffee and cake or just a drink to break up a walk as I did several times while on a nearby campsite. The welcome is friendly…super friendly if you have a dog with you as my Labradoodle would say..and even the customers will chat to you as a stranger while sitting outside surrounded by lovely country area. I enquired re Sunday lunch and was advised to come around twelve if I didn’t want to wait too long as after 1.00 wait times could be lengthy…..that obviously is a result of providing a sought after service so those moaning about wait times should plan to go elsewhere! The scones looked huge and all food coming out of the kitchen looked apertising….I’m now off to sample some of it after walking the lovely hills around this little gem of a cafe and small farm shop.

Sorry to say its becoming very hard to find good service, warm food and timely waiter service. We visited for the first and last due to being a little hungry. It took 50 mins to get a standard breakfast with pot of tea for two. Service was poor and the waitresses was rude and had a scowl all over her face. However the only light in this review was the young girl who served me with the most professional matter. Food was cold and the gap between drink and food was so long that we had finished the pot of tea before our meal had arrived. The food was serviced on the crack plate and all plate will need to be checked to stop this happening again.

If you're comfortable surrounded by shelves of porcelain animals, copious trinkets, nick-nacks & fancy cake covers and you don't mind sitting on white-painted metal chairs, then this is an OK cafe for you. Personally, such things aren't to my taste and the chairs were a shade uncomfortable. Be aware though, that this is a very personal view and I could be having a "later-years grump" here.My wife and I had different toasted sandwiches. They were filling and OK, but as someone who does a lot of baking and who likes his bread I was disappointed to be given two slices of basic white bread. The cakes all looked lovely and my coconut flapjack was quite good. The service was friendly and efficient. The interior was very warm and rather stuffy. (However, the waitress was happy to open the window when asked, despite having to move many of the aforementioned items in order to get to the catch.) The cafe itself was clean, which was a relief after ordering from a plastic coated menu with food marks. The food wasn't brilliant, but the prices seemed reasonable. It was cash only - cards not accepted. In this popular tourist area (The Derbyshire Dales) where I'm fortunate enough to live the average cafe is usually very good, but this one falls short of that high local average.

We waited an hour and 20 minutes for 4 sandwiches, when we complained we were met with very rude responses from staff. Then one of their 'regulars' also came over to have a go and told us they waited 3 hrs for their roast dinner but it's worth the wait and she's been coming for ages and we should just keep quiet - she was quite aggressive and told us the loss of our custom wouldn't make a huge dent. We felt extremely humiliated in front of fellow customers and who waits 3 hours for food?!! I then went to get a refund as we couldn't face eating after that - the staff and owner were then talking about us in the kitchen - which was a mess. I poked my head around to ask for my money and was met with a barrage of abuse from their assistant who said she was the only one doing food (not our problem) and that's why it took so long. I then said the wait was so long it had aggravated a back problem I have & I just wanted to leave. The boss then told me in exasperated tones that she had a plate in HER back, what fantastic customer care and again - not my problem. I really think that they either need to learn some customer service and take on extra staff or call it a day - they ruined our day out and made us feel like villains. Would definitely definitely not recommend - unless of course you have nothing better to do then wait hours for food which frankly was not worth the wait and then not even get a genuine apology. Very very poor.

I have enjoyed the food in this little cafe, large helpings of good home cooked fare in a cosy (sometimes a little cramped) atmosphere off the tourist trail. But I stopped going when the staff took to playing the same CD over and over, seems to be sixties crooners Frank Ifield, Val Doonican and the like, and singing along. That spoiled it for me but there again you might like sixties crooners.

Discovering another excellent small cafe attached to a farm shop is always a joy, and this was our 3rd visit to Kath's Cafe. A relatively small cafe (at a guess seats about 20) on a small road off the Matlock-Alfreton route - great staff, good home cooked food, great prices. We've not yet been disappointed - and the fact that it is sometimes difficult to get into (very popular place, this) hints at the great value of its food. In fact, I'm salivating as I write this review, hoping it won't be too long until we're passing again. Well worth timing your route to experience this ! And - an added plus - the local farm shop sells great items, as well.

So glad we found this restaurant. My Niece recommended The Restaurant At The Renishaw to us and my family and I tried it out for Sunday lunch. The interior is nicely furnished and very pleasing to the eye. The food was absolutely outstanding and plentiful. The staff were all very friendly and very accommodating, even supplying crayons and paper for our 5 year old granddaughter. Our bill for the 6 of us. ( 5 adults and 1 child) came to £115. this was for 5 roast dinners including 2 types of meat. 1 glass of wine, 4 beers, a fruit shoot and 5 deserts. You would pay more for this at a local pub carvery and this was way better for quality and service. I highly recommend!!
