This used to be one of our favourite places to go for a treat. It’s obviously changed hands. The table hadn’t been cleaned and the food second rate. We won’t be eating there again.

Unfortunately we must of visited on a poor day. The service was not as friendly as we have received in other places on the Island, no smiles or friendly greeting. Tea was good, teacake okay. Old style decor a bit tired looking, walls a bit busy with notices, but it was clean. Asked if there was a toilet, just told outside second door, typical outside toilet my gran used to have back in the day. Good job it was a sunny day, as I couldn't find a light so when the door was closed all I had was the sun coming in underneath. It wasn't very clean, but I had to use it. Would have given this 3 stars, but for the toilet issue. Sorry to say our experience has not encouraged us to return.

I can understand why this place attracts poor results, it's all based on expectation. I have been here before, the prices are good and the food is great... service is lovely. It is an old fashioned cafe, if you are expecting a more modern approach there are plenty of others charging double the price a few doors away, this place suits me just fine. And they make a lovely brew!

We popped in one Monday morning, And ordered two bumper breakfasts. Exceptional value for money In our opinion the breakfast was well cooked, 2 x sausage, bacon, egg , fried bread, hash browns, beans or tomatoes. Also toast and marmalade, all washed down with tea or coffee.. The price ,less than £ 8 each..Great value. When we are over the Island again, we shall definitely pop in .

Lovely little cafe in Sandown. The window dressing drew us in (nostalgic tetley tea characters) at first. We were greeted by a very friendly lady sorry didn't ask her name. Welcomed with a smile and seated, seemed lovely, we was excited to have found a nice little place. Then however we were served tinned macaroni and cheese topped with cheddar then grilled, tiny frozen crab cakes ( not much bigger than a £2 coin..) that had been fried for which seemed forever, they shattered when putting the fork in... Was such a shame as we loved the place when we went in. Our waitress was amazing but the shouting and gossip we heard from the kitchen (must be the "cook") was overwhelming. We paid £18 for tinned macaroni and frozen, tiny and overdone tasteless crab cakes with a tea and lemonade, we feel robbed. I'm so sorry to leave a bad review but whomever owns this place needs to seriously consider a new chef or at least some training

A proper old fashioned 'caff' with un-showy basic grub at good prices and friendly staff. We stopped for a fish and chip supper after a long day's walking the coast path in the pouring rain. We liked it so much we went back the next day for breakfast, rather than eat in the hotel. The 'fish and chip special' was a smallish-sized portion of fish and chips - quite enough for our appetites - and then an unexpected dessert, included in the £6 price. I feel bad complaining but this was not a quality breakfast. Super cheap sausages which I couldn't bring myself to eat, a few watery beans, 2 eggs which had been cooked in a mould, and some really greasy fried bread (yes, I know it's fried!!). They say you get what you pay for and there’s certainly a very good reason this cafe is cheaper than others in the area . None of them good. Things started poorly with a child vomiting up bacon fat and got worse . All 3 of us felt ill after eating and the thought of a traditional English bfast still doesn’t appeal days after the event . Do not visit this amateurish cafe. The food was terrible. Stale scones and burnt tea cakes with the tiniest amount of conjealed jam imaginable and rock-hard butter. All of it was barely edible and only consumed out of politeness. The tea cakes were supposed to come with a pot of tea yet none was provided and no discount was offered either so we ended up paying for something we didn't even receive. As for the service, I don't think I've ever received worse. The staff were unfriendly and treated us as if we were an inconvenience. There wasn't even a counter to order from only a randomly positioned table at the back of the room; very informal. It's a family run business and the entire family positioned themselves near us at the surrounding tables and started having a full-on conversation about college, doing-up gardens and other rubbish which made us feel really uncomfortable when we were trying to eat in peace. It's certainly not easy to eat when a whole family is sitting there staring at you with more family members constantly streaming through the door. I didn't expect them to all be mingling with the customers. When it came time to pay, they didn't have enough change in the till. There are plenty of other cafes in Sandown, make sure you visit one of them instead.

We needed to have some lunch in Sandown and as we don't go in cafes that have photos of the food outside, went in here. The food was cheap and good value and the waitress was cheerful and helpful. The decor was extremely dated with odd collections of jewellery for sale on carpet tiled ledges that did not look like they had been vacuumed for some time. The light switches and paintwork also need a good clean.A good clean and abit of TLC would improve this cafe as the food was fine. I would not recommend ordering a latte though as I think this was just ordinary coffee from a jar with hot milk on top - stick with a good old cup of tea which was fine! Finally, for hygiene purposes, give the waitress an apron to wear. I'm not saying she should be in uniform but jeans and a sweatshirt just doesn't look right.

From the outside this looked like a cute, friendly and welcoming cafe, oh how I was wrong!!! Me and my boyfriend walked in very smiley expecting to be greeted or at least acknowledge however the lady just stared at us as we entered the cafe. Not knowing what to do we found ourselves a table, still not knowing if it's table service or if we need to go up and order. After about 5 minutes a lady that looked to be in her 50s came over to us and mumbled 'you ready?' So I told her what we wanted and she just walked off without a word. She seemed to be fairly happy and talkative to the three older couple who were also dining so I'm guessing she just doesn't like young people!! When the meals arrived she still hadn't said a word to us, not even an 'enjoy your meals' The food was horrible, clearly frozen chips and the fish was definitely not fresh, not something you'd expect from a restaurant with the sea at its door step. I left most of my food and so did my boyfriend. We waited about 15 minutes after eating to realise the lady probably wasn't coming back so my boyfriend went and asked for the bill which took a further 5 mins to sort out. This service and quality of food is disgraceful considering there were only 4 table in at the time at 7pm on a Friday night.

This restaurant looks pleasant from the outside......but looks can be deceiving. I actually went here in 2015 and I wasn't impressed then but I thought as a year had gone by that maybe it had improved or changed hands. The place is not very well kept, theres food still left under tables from previous people...the menus are dirty and sticky. I think the service would be better if the 'waitress' stopped doing her puzzle book and focused on her customers. Also the restaurant was left unattended while she shouted out shes going for a fag!! seriously unprofessional. The menu has no choice its just very basic, it would also be nicer if your drinks came in a glass and not a can. If your desperate for something to eat I still wouldn't bother going here, try and get in next door which is quality and good service. Don't wast your money...or go and get chips and sit on the beach as this is a far better option then this place!

We made a short stop in Sandown and were generally disappointed with the general shabbiness of the town. We were looking for a nice place for an afternoon cream tea and spied Kate's Cottage which looked nice from the outside. On opening the door a suspicious looking pair eating at a table close by mumbled that we wouldn't regret coming in. I think that the comment must have been an ironic one. Two of us were desperate to use the toilet so felt obliged to sit down and order something. Cream teas were on the menu so we stayed... But a glance at the toilets was already enough to put major doubts in our minds about the overall cleanliness of the place. We were served by a bright young lady who was friendly enough. She seemed to be juggling with her duties as a waitress as well as mother and keeping up a lively dialogue with other family members about one thing and another. There was strange woman wandering about the place who kept walking past our table to open the door to stairs leading to the flat above the restaurant. I lost count of the number of times she went up, came back, then went up again... it felt like eating at Piccadilly Circus...The cream tea itself was passable - I just had that uncomfortable feeling of insecurity about the overall hygiene of the place... In short, this is certainly not a place to recommend to others - in fact I'd give Sandown a complete miss if I were you...

A cheap and basic eatery.Plastic tableclothes and a bit tatty.Good if you are on a budget. The closing time is early so not a good place to go to in the evening.

Visited this cafe last year over the course of a week and were happy to go back this year every day for breakfasts and evening meals.food good and served quickly at a good price . Maybe not the most talkative host but not there for the chat. Just good food and affordable. Cod and chips, bumper breakfast and meat and veg meals very good. Will certainly be going back next year.

Walked into Kate's cottage and greeted by a stale greasy smell plus a miserable looking couple ... Something was telling me to walk straight back out the door but the family decided to stay. We had scones and cake which were ok , not homemade but edible. The waitress was so miserable - she barely made any effort - just about took our order and we were all feeling very uncomfortable. The atmosphere was not good. We had the cake as fast as we could - paid and left. Live on the island and have relatives visit us often but won't be taking them to this cafe that's for sure.

If it's a decent latte you are after definitely avoid Kates Cottage! On entering the place we met the waitress who (without cracking a smile) informed us that they did latte. However it was revolting and tasted like the cheap dried instant coffees that you get out of sachets. I couldn't drink it and in fairness wasn't charged. We didn't eat there as the smell of grease was off-putting so I can't comment on the food.

We had a super Sunday lunch here after strolling through the botanical gardens. the chef Michael Jackson (yes, really!) cooked a delicious roast beef for my husband & did a special sea bass for me. Very attentive service from friendly staff & really good wine by the glass in pleasant surroundings, with the sun streaming into the restaurant.

Went on a Sunday before going to the ciniworld on the complex. Waited 40 minutes for two pizza and 2 garlic bread with cheese. Pizza turned up 1st ( stone cold ) followed by starters 10 minutes later ( stone cold ) and I had encouraged the other two members of the party to eat at pizza hut because of my experience on the mainland. Obviously this was a bad idea , I would have thought as a chain they would all be the same or similar, how wrong was I. DONT waste your money or your time in this place , you'd probably find a hotter and more nutritional meal in a McDonald's waste food bin.

Popped in for a quick lunch with a toddler and unfortunately the experience was very poor. Fish and chips were inedible - dripping in grease. Roasted veg panini, asked to be warmed and came back deconstructed and floppy. Every coffee cup was dirty and cutlery was grubby too. Thankfully they offered a refund but didn’t seem to want to listen to why we were unhappy - a big shame as sister store in Lake is always good.

Popped by for a Hot Drink & Snack after walking the dog on the beach. Very friendly staff, very welcoming and nice hot drinks which were reasonably priced for the size of the mugs. We definitely recommend visiting.
