Super friendly staff, obviously know their local customers and took time to talk to everyone. We dropped them a text via the website to check they were dog friendly, yes they are, and a response within 5 mins (just time to finish a pint at The dog house micro pub 2min walk away) Food was all cooked fresh and choice was great, with some fantastic Turkish dishes alongside more traditional English food. 2 very filling lunches, 2 hot drinks and a pudding for £32 - great value and well worth a visit.

Called here after a visit to the caves as there was no where else open at the time. Its a warm welcoming cafe with efficient friendly staff. A menu with lots on it, and for cafe food it was all fine. Some things a bit overpriced, and microwaved, but all in all fine. It was around £80, for 3 adults and a child, including coffees, coke and desserts, so not too bad.

We have been coming to FOD for 10yrs and Coleford is our favourite little town here. Lots of individual small shops with very friendly people. We always have several visits to Kaplan's as the the food is tasty, plentiful and a great price! We have had just about everything on the menu at some point and I can honestly say it has all been really good, and severed so quickly by lovely staff. Our daughter has allergies and has Coeliac disease and it was no problem they were very helpful. The kitchen is open, clean and tidy which gives you confidence in safe food handling. Yes it's not state of the art, with expensive furniture, but it is very clean and comfortable, if you want fine dinning go to a city. If you want plenty of yummy food, great prices, massive choices on the menu and fantastic service go here, I know where I would choose. Thank to all the staff, you work so hard and it shows 👏

We found this surprisingly good cafe/restaurant on the recommendation of a local. Situated smack in the middle of Coleford, the place was filled, warm and busy on the every wet day we called. Hadn't visited Coleford before even though it's not far from my home. I was on my way from work to catch up with friends but needed lunch first after walking around Coleford's Christmas Market/light switch-on.Kaplan's looked inviting. It was busy but found a table for two which was perfect. Waited quite some time to be served but my order was taken by a very friendly & helpful waitress. Excellent coffee arrived quickly and I didn't have to wait too long for my meal. I'd ordered a "small" dinner but... wow! I admit I struggled to finish it! Lamb was well cooked and the vegetables pretty perfect. Only one mini-complaint. As far as I could tell there was only one toilet (there may have been another upstairs???) and I was second in a queue. Give the restaurant ws very busy maybe another loo would help? Prepared to be told there is more than one!!!

We were on our third breakfast on our last mornings stay in Lydney. We thought about trying Kaplans. It looked reasonable from the outside. We knew it would only be as good as a transport cafe, but it was far worse. Every cafe over the last couple days had served us cheap sausages, no taste, no colour, no pork smell. Again surprise surprise terrible poor cheap sausages again. The rest of the breakfast was ok. We couldn't eat them. They were completely disgusting. The waitress took away the plates after we finished, asking if we would like anything else. We replied no. Meaning can I have the bill please. No bill arrived. The same situation happened with the next waitress. We went to the counter and asked for the bill. Again we was asked how was the meal. I had to tell her that the sausages were disgusting. The waitress was shocked. I wasn't rude, just honest. I asked if the cook tasted his food. She said he does but as he is Turkish he can't eat pork. That explains it I told the waitress. The next minute he appeared next to me shouting and being aggressive. I told him to calm down so that I could discuss the meal with him. He wasn't interested. He told me the sausages were 52% pork. 52???! What is the remainder???? I asked if some could be adjusted to the bill as £19.40 was extortionate for two breakfasts. He was impossible to talk to. We was asked to leave the cafe. I would never return even if I was offered a free breakfast

Staff was indifferent, not very helpful, as we as almost the only customers (there was another couple) needed to remind to get the mayo. The quality of food was very poor, especially concerning the beef burger (in cheeseburger) that I found inedible. In these sort of places is better and safer to order veggie burger or plain chips. In total we paid near £15, that makes me think that we could have with even half of the money to eat better and tastier food elsewhere

We don’t often eat breakfast out when not in a hotel but a planned power cut sent us to Coleford this morning. Kaplan’s has a good reputation locally and I must say we were delighted with the food and the service. We were on the doorstep as they opened at 9am and from the outset everyone was friendly and efficient. In no time at all we were served with a warming pot of tea followed by a full English and a small cooked breakfast. Really enjoyed it. Good value too. Thanks - we will do that again!

It's easy to be clever and sniffy about places like this in a small town but the standards here were not really above average. I've been going to Coleford every other week for the last 6 months or so and, to be frank, the choice of cafes isn't sparkling. This place offers fairly standard food at a reasonable quality but nothing stunning. I had the steak pie and chips which, at a sliver under £10, you would hope would be worth writing home about. The plate was full... but of chips and peas and gravy all of which tasted fine. The main event... The Pie... was a bit lacking in meat and didn't really live up to it's 'large pie' billing. The meat that was there was somewhat lacking in texture and I'd expect more meat than the fairly miserly portion under the admittedly OK pastry. All in all a bit disappointing at £10. I don't like being critical but whilst the service was personable and pleasant... I can't help feeling that the lack of competition in the town means you could be a little complacent. I'm also conscious that the majority of your clientele are locals... which is great... but I think you may struggle to attract the passing visitor. Then again, maybe that's not your market so I guess you're doing fine. Indon't redkon I'll be back again soon, though.

Great food, suppose that is a good start. Not sure how to word this without being wrong, here goes.I went in here just because of the previous reviews.I was not sure whether to eat on here PR not, but that is just being snobbish, if you are out with the wife for a dress up date its not here you want. It reminds me more of a canteen, I was quick to judge but the food was fantastic. I only had chicken burger and chips, but really well cooked, loads of chips and a bottle of Efes so you can have alcoholic drinks here.I think the only setback here is the décor but I went for a meal, whilst working away and was not disappointed. I would go again, don't judge a book by its cover. It may not be for everyone but serves great food.Menu has basically everything on it.Must park off street as this is on the main road. Only reason I did not give full stars is because of the décor but again that is wrong really, but I just did not want someone getting dresses up to go here. Will be back ! Oh and the staff very nice and polite.

We were staying close by on a 4 day golfing holiday so popped into Coleford Town to have a look around and found this great place to eat. On our first visit we had Coffee's and Apple Pie (delicious) and the next day went back for lunch. The menu is extensive so you should find something to suit everyone, I had a lovely Tuna salad which was so nicely presented and a very generous portion, my hubby had Chicken Tikka panini with a salad on the side, again the panani was much bigger than expected so we were more than satisfied. Don't know what type of ground coffee they use but it was a lovely taste, I had an Americano and hubby had a Cappucino.I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for somewhere nice to eat with a good menu choice and decent prices, it has an open kitchen area so you can see where they prep & cook, all spotlessly clean, the staff are all really friendly too, I would imagine this place gets really busy especially in the height of the season but they do have an upstairs area as well so try it I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Great place for breakfast: I went for the full English but going back there I would probably choose specific items as I thought the sausages were't as flavoursome as I would expect in a rural location. And loved having Turkish coffee to kickstart the day though going back there would ensure 'medium' as the default is cheek-sucking sweet!! Wonderfully served with silver tray and other trimmings including a cube of Turkish delight. The waitress was Polish so the whole thing is a bit world meets Forest of Dean. Great all round and very good value!!

My fiancée and I were recently holidaying close to Tintern and we were on the hunt for breakfast, the highlight of any holiday! After being sorely disappointed by The Old Station in Tintern itself we found this delightful place in Coleford, a short drive away. Now I love a big breakfast – a proper full English, mind you – but I’m a vegetarian which can cause problems. But fear ye not, for Kaplan’s caters for just about anyone! Their breakfast menu was extensive and there was a very comprehensive veggie option – not just a meat breakfast with the meat removed. We were served quickly and our food also came quickly too. The amount on my plate was quite impressive and I enjoyed every mouthful. Now we’re not exactly talking haute cuisine here – it’s a fried breakfast so it’s not doing any favours to your waistline! But it was big, bold and very delicious. The staff were friendly enough but not in a stand-out way, the atmosphere was that of a traditional café and comparisons to the stereotypical “greasy spoon” are not entirely unwarranted. But Kaplan’s gave us what we wanted, when we wanted it when others had failed to provide. You can’t ask better than that in my book. Thanks guys!

Wasn't too keen on the look of the place from the outside as it looked a bit drab - but after a long journey went in anyway in the absence of other venues in sight. It was rather dark inside and quite chilly. We were given the (perhaps worryingly) large and extensive menu to peruse and then waited...and waited. It seemed impossible to catch anyone's eye despite the cafe being busy but not packed. A couple on the adjacent table, having waited a long time also, got up and left without ordering. We ordered 3 soups and a coffee - no problem with the coffee which was hot and strong, you get a choice of one shot or two. The soups (tomato, carrot and coriander and chicken and mushroom) were piping hot but all tasted as if they came from a tin. The bread was a small baguette roll each which was nice and hot too (but soft as if it were microwaved), Once our orders were eventually taken the food arrived in reasonable time and the waitress explained she was new. However we didn't really enjoy our experience due to the drab absence, frustration of the initial wait and uninspiring food.

We are fairly new to the area, but this place always busy which is a pretty good sign.Excellent service and nothing seems too much trouble.Extensive menu and open kitchen as well so you can see your food being freshly cooked. The big breakfast is not for the feint hearted, it is huge and the Turkish eggs and sausage is just excellent if you like a strong savoury start to the day.All well priced and served, totally recommend a visit if you are in the area.

We popped in for lunch with kids. The menu has all the 'classics' and a few with a Turkish twist. Great value, cooked freshly with friendly staff. Why aren't there still more places like this around?

perfectly decent cafe for a fry up. We both had the turkish breakfast of spicy sausage cooked with eggs together in the pan. It had 3 eggs and was pretty filling but not too much. bit of spice but not too spicy for breakfast. It was £7. The other breakfasts looked like standard greasy spoon plates, I noticed the sausages immediately as cheapy ones, which is a shame in Gloucester Old Spot country... Service was unassuming but friendly.

Visited again and ordered a 007 breakfast costing about £8 including a large cup of tea. We were well looked after by the waitresses. This place offered great value food but could do with improving the type of sausages they provided.

They say eat where the locals eat for good food...and this place is always busy. Good, basic food,well-cooked, but also some interesting choices on the menu. My friend chose a wholesome carrot & coriander soup, with plenty of fresh bread, and I had a jacket potato (cooked all through, which sometimes isn't the case). Plenty of salad garnish, too. Good tea, friendly & polite service & excellent value for money. I have visited a number of times, and never been disappointed.

We were greeted as soon as we walked in and the menu is one of the most extensive and varied that I have seen in any establishment. I chose the pork roast for the very hungry and was presented with a very substantial portion of tasty, thickly sliced meat with gravy, roast potatoes and three veg, cooked just right to keep the nutritional value. I felt the value for money was very good, the cleanliness of all the facilities that could be seen was excellent and the speed of service most acceptable.

We had a very nice lunch in this restaurant, open 7 days a week. Special kids menu was of good quality, as was the salad and burger.

Kaplan's offers traditional English fare along with some dishes which could be considered "American." Their burgers were good, the Steak and Guiness pie was excellent. We happened to be there on roast day- the "very hungry" portion is well described. Only those with a truly empty stomach could eat it all. Don't be fooled - a milkshake does not contain ice cream, it is rather milk with flavoring. It was good, just not thick. I would go back. There is a grocery store nearby in case you need sundries or snacks for the road.

If you want a cheap OK meal then this is the place. Food is not cooked on the premises. Ideal if you are in a hurry but I would not take a guest who I would want to impress.

We spent a family holiday in Gloucestershire over the half term break and had booked another local restaurant for Sunday lunch. Unfortunately we’d been let down as our booking hadn’t been taken properly however they did us a big favour as we then phoned The Red Hart who were able to accommodate 9 of us for Sunday lunch at very short notice, our ages ranging from 17 to 87! We knew the pub previously having spent several family holidays at Blaisdon Hall as kids. The staff at The Red Hart were really welcoming, it’s a great little country pub and the food was amazing. We returned for dinner a few evenings later. I would highly recommend it!
