Called in has we had not booked a table was greeted by a friendly person who asked us if we would like to call back in half hour which we did and so glad we did too. The food was delicious.

We love coming here as they do specialist Keralan curries which you don't get elsewhere. I had the green peppercorn chicken which was tantalising. Washed down with a bottle of Black Sheep local beer. Very reasonably priced all told !

Visited for a celebratory meal with my wife and 2 friends after a recommendation from a friend in York. Two of us are veggies and two are meat eaters. We've spent years in Manchester visiting the curry mile many times and tried some of the best curries available but nothing comes close to the beautiful food here. We've already booked another couple of nights' stay in York to re-visit. Faultless food and service.

4 friends visited the York restaurant on Saturday the 16th. The service was immaculate. The food was even better. Very picky about from that part of the world having grown up Sri Lankan cooking. The food was not over spiced, not oily but delicate and punch where needed. All 4 of us enjoyed it compared to the dozens of Indian restaurants we visited. If in York please eat here.

Was recommended this restaurant and I must say it was good authentic Indian. Everything was pretty spicey buy tasty. We went early on a Saturday night and after dinner I needed to hit the loo - the loo let it down. It looked like someone had thrown a bucket of p1ss through the door whilst kicking the seat off the toilet. As I wasn't wearing my waders I decided to leave it. To my regret, 200 yards down the road I got a knife jabbing pain in my stomach and I had to dash into the nearest pub before exploding into their lav with huge relief. I was seconds away from sh1tting myself in the street. I was fine after that but my partner had a lass aggressive case but was able to at least get home. I cannot honestly say whether this was the food or the loo door handle but I never realised poo could travel that quickly.

The food was the most authentic Keralan food I’ve had in a long time in England. The fried fish starter was excellent as was the chicken in green peppercorns. My wife had the chilli paneer and the dahl. The dahl could have been a bit thicker but that’s personal choice. A great experience. No complaints. Excellent.

Went for lunch after seeing reviews. The service was good and the front of house guy was excellent. The food was good in parts but only ok in others. Madras spicy Chicken starter was excellent and sheek kebab decent but not great. Beef masala was very thick sauce and the beef was overcooked and a bit tough. Rice was good and sides ok (chickpeas were poor). I think it could be good but our experience and we eat a lot of Indian food throughout the UK was ok at best.

Wow, fantastic authentic food. Not your usual curry-house fayre. Much smaller menu than you would usually find but this is surely a good sign of individually prepared dishes. The food was tasty, beautifully presented and different to curry I have eaten before. The place is clean, the staff are attentive and polite. Very nice indeed.

The best south Indian restuarant; we had multiple dishes brightly coloured and delicately flavoured, i will definitely will be returning soon!

This is my favourite restaurant in York. The food is amazing, tasty, inexpensive and a wide variety. Service is excellent also.

Busy, lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. And the food was delicious. All of us really enjoyed everything we had - the kids (ages 9 and 10) loved the dhal and aubergine starter.

Authentic Indian cuisine. Ordered beef fry, mutton biyani, aubergine and dosa- all items were very good. Staff was very hospitable. Planning to visit next time soon.

Top class service and Top class food, not your 'average' curry establishment Had starter to share, delicious different popadums and other items ,shared a Ragada Chat - both excellent. Mains one of us had Special DOSA, he said delicious. I had the 'Tiffin' veggie selection, which gives you option of different curry's with smaller portions to try, you get rice with it and a pancake thing (can't remember name if it) Would recommend, superb food . One of the best indians we have ever had. Group of 5 of us all said so - couldn't stop eating sharing all the food, I don't think I've ever had better food. The service was absolutely incredible they couldn't do enough for us and were police and attentive. Would go again any time, can't believe the price is so cheap for the amazing food we actually got. This place has a broad selection of really interesting Indian sub continent dishes. The dosas are huge but paper thin and dry and crisp, perfect. The main dishes range from delicate fish to beef to mutton. The influence from across the religious spectrum and the history representing the diversity through the food. This place incorporates about 4 different areas of London's finest ethnic areas in one menu. If we lived here, this would be a regular go to . As a veggie, I tried loads of side dishes: okra, paneer, dal... The rice and breads were excellent. Honestly, we had way too much food, but it was a lovely atmosphere so we just sat and slowly ploughed our way through until we were fit to bust The only reason I gave the atmosphere a 4 is it's very light and open plan, so it might be too much for some. But it reminds us of our favourite "curry houses".

Wow! We'd been meaning to try this place for ages and never got round to it until now. It's safe to say that it's our new favourite Indian restaurant! The menu is varied and well-labeled for allergens. My husband got a lamb curry and some fish starters, whereas I tried an aubergine starter and the mutton biryani. My food was spectacularly seasoned and clearly made with love. The biryani was the best I've ever had by a country mile! All the staff we interacted with were warm and welcoming and couldn't do enough for us. I really appreciated our waiter's suggestion for which dessert to try- they've got a fantastic dessert menu with some really interesting dishes I'd not heard of before. Definitely support this lovely business if you get chance, they deserve it!

Went here for dinner with my partner when i visited York. Given i am used to south indian cuisine. I can say their food is really authentic and tasty food. Their fish curry is really tasty and full of flavour. The dosa done right with crispy and light batter. Lamb biryani was tasty as well. The sambar that came with the dosa have just the right amount of spice. Staff and owner were very friendly and treat you well. Would comr back again if i ever come back to York. Highly recomended.

The food is lovely but the service wasn’t what we were expecting. We were told that there was no dessert and were handed the bill, asked to leave saying that other people are waiting. Why ask people to sit when don’t have the patience or capacity. We felt quite rushed in the end so were left with a bitter taste

Our son took us tonight for my husband's 65th birthday. The food was amazing especially the scallops. Had to take some food home as there was too much. staff really friendly and service very good. Thank you

Cannot recommend highly enough. We were a big group - approx 20 people however this was never a problem for Gijo and his team. The food was really special - just the right heat and the naan breads were suitably fluffy! If you haven't tried it I would say you're missing out.

Best place for good south indian food,especially from the state of kerala… aapam to mop up the delicious raw mango-prawns curry, fried prawns, biryani everything was DELICIOUS! Team is friendly as well… good ambience, good location.

Comparison with actual Keralan food is unfair, but some dishes came very close to that standard. I advise you to take multiple small dishes, especially their dosa and koottu curry are nice! Great service and relaxed atmosphere :)

If you love Indian food, then this is a must. There is something quite special about South Indian cuisine that just makes this the best Indian meal you will have. The team are fantastic and so welcoming. The food is amazing and something to come back for time and time again. I can't recommend enough.

Ate here last week. This place is an absolute gem. The service was second-to-none, even asking about any allergies before taking any orders. My Railway Mutton curry was cooked to perfection, as was the garlic and coriander naan to accompany it. I did not have rice on this occasion, nor dessert as the main was a perfect portion.

I have been there today,The food and service was very good. I had a terrible experience when I was in there.The owner was shouting at the staff in front of the customers.that was very disgusting.if they have done any mistake that should be questioned in private.not in front of the customers.it’s not a good manner to treat staff slave.

This restaurant serves really tasty food. The menu is very different to other Indian restaurants, which means that familiar dish that you tend to favour will not be on the menu. However by reading the description on menu you can find something that takes your fancy. All I can say is that I don’t know exactly what to expect when I order but this restaurant has become my go to Indian.

Most Indian restaurants in the UK calls themselves as "Indian restaurant". However, Kalpakavadi serves authentic KERALA CUISINE. Kerala is a state in South India and is also called "Gods own country" for its phenomenal diversity of nature. Kerala is also known for its awesome cuisine. Kerala cuisine has a wide diaspora and diversity like its nature - rice based dishes (Appam, Dosas, Punugulu, Puttu, Biryani), wheat based dishes (Malabar parota, Ghee parota), Riverwater fish as well as sea fish based dishes and chicken, lamb, mutton etc. Kalpakavadi presents of these dishes in York with absolute finesse. Besides this they have also added other dishes from North India in their platter so that customers have wider choices. The customer service and overall ambience of the restaurant is also fantastic. The restaurant owners and attendants are very polite and always enquire if the customer is satisfied with the food. Definitely give Kalpakavadi a try if you are interested in Indian cuisine.

Visited this resturant for my mom's birthday meal. As we entered we were greeted and sat at our tables. Once ordered the food was quick. The food was delicious and we ordered a lassi which was really nice. A small selection of desserts which we ordered the Gulab jamun which was excellent. I would recommend this place if your in the mood for a delicious Indian meal.

We entered the restaurant and there were 4 tables already in, and all had already ordered. We ordered, waited 45 minutes, enquired about why the the food hadn’t arrived as other tables had come in long after us and had their food, only to be told they hadn’t put the order through. Kind of incompetent given that we were the only table of 5 tables that was waiting to order. Did they think we were sat there for the good of our health? Literally, two people sat with no food for 45 minutes and they didn’t even realise or think to ask. It’s just basic stuff…. A customer orders (the only customer waiting to order in this instance), you should put the order through. Basic, basic stuff. Having read some other 1 star reviews I can see that they get quite defensive so to be clear, we got our coke and lemonade for free, but that frankly doesn’t make up for the wasted time we sat there waiting for food that was never going to come. Just incompetent really.

Our first visit to Kalpakavadi and it definitely won't be the last. We didn't have a reservation but the staff were so welcoming and the service was excellent! The food was absolutely delicious and the ambience so lovely. Words can't say how fabulous this restaurant is. Well done 👏 😘💛

Absolutely delicious - I'm gluten intolerant and was given excellent advice as to what would be best choices. Vegetarian. Sambar Wada and Kathrika porichath (Aubergine) delicious.

Highly recommend for taste the proper Indian cuisine.Very good place for friends and family. Staff was Friendly and polite , always come and ask you "everything okey,do you need anything else". Food was delicious we really enjoyed it, I believe the chef's magical tasty food made us remember how much we miss our Kerala food❤️. Card payment, toilet facilities available and parking is bit difficult but manageable.

We stumbled upon this restaurant whilst walking around and as soon as we entered the atmosphere was buzzing. The food was excellent! The biryanis were a favourite as was the masala dosa. We would certainly recommend this restaurant.

Friendly and helpful staff. Which was a good thing as although we're seasoned eaters at Indian restaurants, this South Indian restaurant had many menu items we'd never seen. I had my first dosa (I'm gluten free so I was excited to try). They helped us with our choices and I loved their scallops with grilled asparagus! An excellent and not expensive starter.

Very very spicy prawn biriani lots an lots of rice prawns at bottom of the bowl had too tip out enough rice for 2 people thought it may have come with a mild curry but came with a yoghurt dip - no egg omelet on top but all different from everywhere I have been too an Indian restaurant - squid starters nicely done

Well what can we say, found this little gem while visiting York. The atmosphere was superb the service was first class and the food was to die for it’s a 5* from us!!!! See you soon!!!!

A very busy Indian resteraunt serving dosas, lovely range of curries. I had the Duck, it was very nice with the Lime rice. The staff were great and the whole place is clean and very respectable.

Amazing restaurant and staff! Honestly cannot fault them at all, in fact I don't think I can sing their praises enough. The food was incredible - as my other half used to be a chef, it's hard to go out to eat somewhere where he doesn't have something bad to say, and yet he can't fault these guys at all. In his words, "this is my new favourite place. I'm not coming to York to see you anymore, it's to come here." As someone on the autism spectrum, I really really struggle with hot spices, and they went above and beyond for me this evening, without me asking (I really don't like being that customer.) I can honestly say I've never experienced the level of customer service we received tonight, I can't speak highly enough of Gijo, the chefs and the rest of the staff! They went out of their way to ensure I was happy with the food, that it wasn't too spicy and even altered my main course without me asking! I appreciate it so very much, and we both had the best curry either of us have had in a long, long time. Genuinely blown away by them, and will definitely be coming back! Thank you so much 😊 we are so lucky that such a gem is right in the centre of York!

What a find! A refreshing change to the usual curry. So tasty! I felt that the curry had been made for me. Gijo, was so helpful and obviously passionate about his families business. Shall definitely be going again!!

We visit every time we go to York and it is always delicious.

The service and food was absolutely fantastic. We were a group of 11 celebrating a big birthday. They made it very special. We had a coeliac in the group and they were very good at ensuring she was well catered for and very considerate about the food allergy. The food was delicious, and I’ll forward to going back. Authentic South Indian food. As a family of four we ordered pre-food snacks, seafood platter, aubergine fries , dosas , Meen pulichad and Biryani. Everything was amazing . Aubergine starter and meen pulichad were the stars of the show. Good service too! We will be returning .

Our 2nd visit to Kalpakavadi, and not our last. We planned a day trip to York from Southport just to have the food on offer here. I had the Thallassery Kohzi Chicken which was just out of this world (previously I had the Railway Mutton). I wish there were more Keralian Restaurants around, but these guys are definitely the best Indian Food in York (tried a few over the years) if not in the country

Great little place and absolutely fantastic food.

Staff is extremely nice, I love when they suggest extra bits and pieces to try and the food was nice. Lamb was delicious, chicken was tender and the lemon rice was such a nice twist to go with the curry. It was a busy Friday night but you could tell everyone was having a good time.

As a Keralite I can say food is really good. But service is not good as it seems they don’t want Indian customers because they are rushing saying they are having bookings. Owners : if you are having bookings don’t ask us to be seated because we never came to beg before you for food. Neither we wasted time, a group of 12 we had to leave the restaurant in 35 to 40 mins. Secondly you don’t have enough wash space. We were literally queuing up. Still way to improve.
