I went to Jumping Bean last week in a group of 4 and we ordered the Nachos, Currywurst Hot Dog, Stacked Burger and Texas Burger. All mains were delicious and everything was devoured in no time, even by my sceptical meat-eating friends who were very pleasantly surprised. We will definitely be returning for some more moreish vegan fast food!

I used to visit the first incarnation of Jumping Bean often, it was the go to place for veggies & vegans in Durham. The old menu was varied, warming, and contained nutrients. I am only assume that the rise in vegan junk food, and the success of Newcastle’s ‘Junk it Up’ prompted a change to this fast food style diner. On arrival I was concerned when there was only one person in the kitchen, she also took the orders, and completed all front of house tasks. Yet when the food arrived it was uncannily familiar to the burgers in my own freezer - so disappointing that the burgers were likely shipped in from a Mrs Beatles style store, then prices quadrupled. I want vegan establishments to do well, but vegan food should not only be empty calories! If it is then it needs to be good, and at least home made!

I am a local and a regular at this place. I really look forward to my visits and my kids love it too. Clientele is very diverse including students, visitors and suited professionals. What they all have in common is that they took the time to find and visit this slightly out of the way 100% vegan place- and I rather like that. It’s the only permanent totally vegan establishment in Durham. My only wish is the usual “regular’s request” for a specials board. Anyway, I love it.

Travelled to Durham for day out from Newcastle. Could this be the best veggie burger in the NE? Probably. Their menu is 100% vegan I chose the spicy bean burger, washed down with San Pellegrino lemonade all served and cooked by the wonderful friendly Sara. Vegan partner was over the moon and said even the vegan cheese was yum. We were in a hurry and Sara popped our food in a doggy bag (we didn't want to leave any behind!) 10/10 Deffo be back

This place is not what it once was. Yes it’s clean and bright now but I sat down and looked at the menu and there was nothing I wanted to order. Lots of burgers and lots of hotdogs and fast food style vegan items. Everything seemed heavily fake meaty and empty calories. I went expecting lively atmosphere and variety. I ended up with an alright coffee (pleased of oat milk option) with some fake fast food that filled the hole I guess. I will probably go again for coffee as it serves oat milk, is in a good location I’d rather go indi than pay a chain store. Not jumping or many beans sadly Would probably have a menu outside to avoid disapointment. It was totally soup and toastie weather :(

I was visiting Durham to see some friends, and we stumbled upon this cute little cafe. I’m not vegan but my friends are, and the food satisfied all of us! The interior is clean and cosy, perfect for a bite to eat and a catch up. I had the pulled p fries- freshly made fries with ‘pulled p’, their take on pulled pork. Visited here with my boyfriend who had the vintage burger which did not come with burger sauce like it stated on the menu but instead vegan mayonnaise which he does not like (he wouldn’t have ordered if he had been aware of this) and the burger was also far too over cooked. I ordered a berry ‘milkshake’ which was a huge let down as it was nothing like a milkshake and was definitely more of a smoothie. Overall cafe has a nice welcoming feel to it but would most likely not visit again.

We came into Durham to have a coffee & catch up. We’d heard of jumping bean and we’re largely vegetarian so thought we’d give it a try. Nice looking cafe & nice friendly staff. However, we were served possibly the worst flat white I have ever tasted. Disgustingly strong flavour even when diluted with an extra jug of warm milk. The taste made us judder. Yuck! So bad we won’t be giving it a second try. Such a shame. Nothing remotely healthy on the menu either. Disappointing experience

This little gem of a restaurant/cafe is a pleasure to discover. Excellent and attentive service, friendly staff and thoroughly tasty food made this a most enjoyable visit for me. The decor is modern yet quirky, and staff were well drilled and knew exactly what they were doing. The 3 bean chilli was flavoursome, full bodied and well prepared, while the vegan sausages were well textured and filling. Fresh salad ingredients added the finishing side touches to an enjoyable dining experience. Café has recently changed hands and has sadly lost much of its former charm, along with the quirky Mediterranean inspired colour scheme, comfy sofas and art work on the walls. It was previously owned by a couple of young blokes with a real enthusiasm for vegan and vegetarian food but now it seems a bit 'manufactured' and soulless. The food was good and tasty, and the staff friendly, but the menu was dull and very carb laden with not as much as a salad in sight. Pleasant enough but just like dozens of other coffee shops in any city and not what it once was. Jumping Bean was previously a place to relax, have a coffee and read the papers but not any more - I don't think I will be in a rush to go back. Shame really.

Having popped in for lunch on the grounds that the Jumping Bean Cafe specifically promotes having gluten free food it was disappointing to find the only two choices that day were nachos or the chilli three bean wrap. Staff apologised for the lack of options so we thought we'd still give it a try. The wrap was served with chips which wasn't clear when we ordered and unfortunately as a coeliac the meal made me ill. I can only guess that as the kitchen is very small and and on closer inspection didn't appear well organised the risk of cross contamination could well be an issue.

A rainy cold day in Durham and on a trip with my dad on his first visit to town, we needed a tea and cake stop off. Saw this little place on a side street (past experience has often found me the best places to eat off the beaten track) so went in. It's small but warm and welcoming with an arty vibe. Wasn't aware at the time it was a veggie/vegan place but that wasn't an issue. My dad loved his vegan lemon drizzle cake whilst I opted for the seemingly good value "flapuccino" -a £4 combination of a cappuccino and piece of flapjack. My coffee was perfect not too strong or too milky and the mint flapjack surprised me as the twist was fresh mint in the oats rather than a peppermint paste. Music was eclectic with books and games to keep you amused. I may be back again another time to try a pakora wrap.

Jumping Bean is a lovely little place right in the centre of Durham. It could be described as a 'hipster' joint because its menu is certainly vegetarian, and often vegan. But don't let this put you off. I'm a dedication omnivore but I go here simply because the food is great, it's peaceful and there's a friendly atmosphere. I even have a loyalty badge. I'd recommend the toastie and soup deal, which is less than a fiver (and the soup is made on location), and don't miss the brownies, which are crispy on the outside, melting in the middle, and packed with nuts. Trust me, I love NYC's Magnolia Bakery's brownies, but Jumping Bean's might just have the edge, and I don't have to travel 3000 miles to get them. Also the tea and coffee is very good, and the jolly staff will make it just how you like it- or even suggest new ways that you didn't know you liked until you tried it. Last time I visited I was introduced to an Americano with a splash of hot milk- all the fun of a latte, with none of the guilt.

The team were so helpful and we can't recommend the cafe highly enough. Worth checking out even if you aren't a vegan or allergy sufferer.

Small, friendly place. Small menu with fresh ingredients & flexible chef. Toastie and soup is a bargain!Cater for all kinds of fussy buggers like me. Brownies are sensational.

It was almost home time and as we headed back to the train station we spotted a little vintage shop, and beyond that another cafe. After already spending most of my pennies in Durham's bustling marketplace and in other cafe's I grabbed a quick bite and just a coffee. The coffee tasted great but the cake was a little bit dry so I didn't bother finishing it. Visited 3 cafe's today and this was a nice place, but didn't quite match up to some of the other.

This is a really relaxed friendly cafe and it really does do the best brownies I've ever tasted. The staff are helpful and chatty with a good knowledge of the food.

Tucked away off a main street this small but good quality restuarant is well worth seeking out. Friendy staff and good, freshly made food. Sat outside on a sunny day watching the world go by, how relaxing.

After a long day of enjoying the beauty of Durham we arrived to Jumping Bean Cafe in search for some good veggie food. Unfortunately, we haven't had realized they were closing in 10 minutes, and as we were about to walk out, they told us they would not let us go hungry and so we got our soup and sandwiches. What a great place!

Lovely little vegan friendly cafe. Polite and friendly guy served us. Had a cheese and bean toastie with a bit of a twist. Would highly recommend it and I'm totally stealing that idea for home.

Jumping Bean is a cute cafe off of North Road in Durham, offering vegetarian sandwiches and soups and vegan desserts. The decor is lovely with artwork, dreamcatchers and cushions dotted around the eating area. There is also an outdoor balcony area where you can sit if the sun is out. I was surprised I had never heard of Jumping Bean before as I like vegetarian food - it's nice to see something a little different in Durham. The service was quick and friendly.

Jumping bean is definitely one of my favourite cafes in durham, the people who work there so friendly and make you feel really home. The food is amazing and so fresh and delicious, I love how it's healthy and filling. They have so much choice for vegans and also gluten and dairy free cakes which are all delicious! Will definitely be going back as much as we can!

Just off North Road, this is a great, relaxed place for a coffee, brunch or lunch. Good choice on the menu - leek and potato soup and brie and aubergine toastie was a tasty option and the coffee and vegan chocolate cake with a topping of peanut butter was also surprisingly good. Well worth trying whether you are vegetarian or not - and the service is very friendly and efficient.

Lovely little place. Lovely food, great prices, nice mix of people and lovely staff. An independent cafe - makes such a change from chain restaurants. They sell really delicious food and the staff are very genuinely nice and helpful. Well worth a visit.

Visiting my daughter at uni who comes here regularly. What a lovely, friendly little cafe. We only had drinks but I am assured the food is really good too. I noticed the food coming out to diners looked lovely and they seemed suitably impressed. Anyone veggie/vegan//gluten free should give this place a try.

Visited this morning with my 2 children, Gluten-free brownies were WOW but a bit on the small side (could have eaten 2) Coffee fantastic too. Cant comment on full menu as was only a coffee-stop. Only downside was the access was difficult with the buggy but staff were very helpful offering the help me down the step. Will be visiting again soon.

It was the 2nd was day of the year. Few students still in town. We turned up out of the blue needing to fill hungry stomachs, two of which may not have gluten. "No problem. Let me pop-round Tesco and get some Gluten Free bread". Nice bread, even better sandwich. Lovely tea.

we visited on a Saturday lunch time and it was busy, but both the service and food were very good. I had the Greek salad, which appeared small but proved to be the ideal size if you want to follow it up with a cake and coffee. The ingredients were good quality and tasty. Because it was made to order I was able to substitute ingredients which the serving staff were more than happy to do. The menu is not huge but more than enough for several visits. It's really nice to see a small independent cafe in Durham that is offering something different, and we will defiantly be back.

I visited this cafe with my daughter and partner. We arrived just as the owner was closing up but, bless his heart, he stayed open for us! What a sweetheart! He was so accommodating and his tofu sandwiches were almost as good as his vegan brownies. I wouldn't hesitate to go back to this place. The prices are reasonable, the food is outstanding and the owner is even better.

If you want tasty vegan, gluten free food then this is a good choice. Popular with students and young families but with other age groups too. I went with friends with food intolerances and they found good choices available. I had the none vegan chocolate brownie which was delicious with lots of nuts. Yum!

Popped in for coffee and cake with a friend, expecting a regular cafe and (as an omnivore) was originally dismayed to see a totally vegetarian, partially vegan, menu. Despite my doubts we had a lovely meal in charming surroundings. As a treat we shared a couple of the deserts (a dairy/gluten free brownie and a vegan choc orange flapjack). To my greatest surprise not only did they not taste like cardboard, they were incredible! Although a sceptic to vegan food, I was thoroughly impressed by the standard of food, friendly staff and talkative regulars. What a great place!
