Judsons Wine Bar & Restaurant in East Riding of Yorkshire

Went in last night for their steak night and we all had the possibility worse steak ever in our lives... We had 2 sets of steak night combos, all medium rare. But none of the 4 sirloin came out to be medium rare. They were super chewy, full of sinew and very hard to cut through by the steak knife. Yes even with the steak knife we couldn't cut through the enormous mass of it! The under-rendered fat and sinew basically occupied half of the 12oz sirloin. One of us literally choked by the sinew and almost needed first aid. The steaks were also very salty too. We never have to abandon our steaks before but all the work of sawing and trying to chew through the steaks just left us no choice. All our plates were stacked with failed-to-swallow meat and sinew next to the half-eaten steak. Have to say the onion rings were pretty nice. The kids sausage, chips and peas was another disaster. Sausages were just 3 bone-dry chipolatas, the peas were not drained well so the cooking water remained at the bottom of the bowl and turned the chips soggy. Beers quality was hit and miss too. For one pint of Ossett Blonde there was a hazy glass and the next clear pint got a big formy top. It was a long wait between the courses. No one checked back on us even we were clearly discussing about our frustration at the table (when they were clearing the table next to us) and one of us coughing to a bright red face. The waitress only asked when she collected our plates. She looked horrified to hear our disappointment but only sent our kids a handful of coffee biscuits as an apology and still charged us full bill. Want to ruin a carnivore's birthday dinner? Go to Judson's for their Tuesday steak dinner. Won't be disappointed. Wish I did take the photos of our disappointing plates, but too busy minding the kids... Definitely won't go back.

I dined at this bistro / restaurant on Friday 24/08/24 there was 4 in our party, and everything was acceptable Except for my meal, two of us had the sirloin steak option, medium cooked but my steak had an overdose of Salt/Seasoning which I could not tolerate, my guest tried a sample and confirmed it was nothing like hers. So beware. I did mention this to the waiter who said he would pass it on to the kitchen. I won't be dining here ever again.

We went here last night for a friend's get together with 10 people, we had the upstairs room and the food and service was great 😁😁

Had a sirloin steak , which anywhere else comes with your onion rings mushrooms grilled tomato, oh no not at Judsons ...Cabbage with a few chips... was gob smacked , misses had a Lamb dish which she was not impressed with , but you learn by your mistakes . Lesson learnt won't be going again .

Very nice bar to have a drink, whether it's a weekend afternoon, or an evening midweek. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Good selection of drinks on tap, and amazing cocktails on offer as well.

Wonderful Place. We didn't have a reservation, but the staff found us a table quickly. Food and drinks were marvellous. 10 from 10. We will definitely visit you guys soon

Lovely atmosphere and the staff very attentive, ordered a sirloin steak medium rare, cooked to perfection however it came with a thick crust of black pepper which wasn’t described on the menu, needless to say this wasn’t edible, we mentioned it twice to two different staff members which didn’t say anything other than they’ll tell the chef, once we paid the bill I expected them to comment but didn’t. Quite disappointing.

Tasty steak, good cocktails, excellent wine and a brilliant atmosphere! Will be back

Very helpful when trying to work out when to eat

We had a drink here one evening and found it to be the most civilised place to drink during our stay in Pocklington. Interesting wine list and well-kept Ossett Yorkshire Blonde. So we booked dinner for a couple of nights later. Downstairs was heaving and we were shown upstairs to an empty room, but it filled up pretty quickly and was pleasantly buzzy, plus we had a nice view up the market square. Service was excellent. The food was good but not outstanding. Veg spring rolls were a little stodgy and my flatiron steak wasn't as flavourful as I'd hope. Some shredded garlicky greens were a slightly odd side for steak. A salmon portion was large and well-cooked. The wine list starts at a relatively high price but the £27 merlot we opted for was excellent.

there for family doo staff worked off their feet but up for it, sat outside for a while as doo noisy and found other customers very friendly too

Great pub with comfy seating and an open fire (always a winner), also seating upstairs and out the front with tasty meals served at all tables! Very nice staff! Hopefully, the lock to the mens toilet is fixed now, so I don't have to speed pee. Also, more guest ciders or Aspel on tap would make it perfect! Dog friendly if you like your four-legged Wookeys.

Would certainly recommend. Staff were really good and friendly. Cocktails were great and really well made. My partner had steak and ale pie and I had the king prawn tagliatelle which was excellent. Reasonably priced too

Wow! Food amazing! Really went the extra mile to ensure we had wine that suited us all and our food. Staff really friendly and helpful. Highly recommended

Disappointing --Whilst a good atmosphere and very pleasant and efficient staff the overall experience with the current menu, based entirely on burgers is not the experience that I will be repeating

Very poor service for a large group. Don't get me wrong, I've eaten there before for lunch and it was absolutely fine, no problems, reasonably priced and the food was OK. Went for a Christmas work meal and it was horrendous. Despite having our food orders days in advance from the set menu, it was an hour between getting our starters and our main course! The quality of the Christmas dinner was awful. Processed turkey, a single pig in blanket which may as well have been a lump of gravel picked from outside, two tiny roast potatoes, a single scoop of mash, a few sprouts, a couple of carrot and parsnip sticks. It looked pretty cheap. The dessert was super nice, but absolutely, categorically, without any question.. NOT worth the £25 per head paid. Drink service was super slow, with staff coming around with card machines asking money for drinks that still hasn't arrived after 20mins. Despite some of our party cancelling last minute, with no refund (fair enough), Judson's had about £120-£140 for food they didn't have to make. Basically, free money for them. Yet still had the cheek to absolutely hound us for £18 worth of drinks orders which apparently 'didn't go through properly' on their card machine nearly an hour after ordering them. Perfectly fine place for a quick and light lunch, but strenuously don't recommend for large bookings.

Service was so friendly and warm! The food was exceptional, great prawn cocktail lasagna and turkey dinner! Oh would certainly recommend! Will be back again soon...👍

Came as a group for a 60th birthday. Young lady came to take our drinks order, when asked what you had on draught the answer was “I don’t know”. We then asked what bottled beer they had and she again said “I don’t know”. Showing no willingness to go and check, she stood there whilst my partner went to the bar. Waited around 30 minutes for our drinks. Food was extremely slow to come out but the waiter had warned us so we weren’t too concerned. Mains came out in dribs and drabs. When I asked where mine was, they apologised and said they hadn’t made it, and it’d be out in no more than 5 minutes. My burger came out just as everyone else had finished eating. When the bill came, we therefore asked for this burger to be removed, but was told “we can’t do that sorry”. Very disappointed, wouldn’t recommend booking for an occasion.

When you arrive in a town you don't know having cycled 70 miles and you pick Judson's you know instantly you made the right choice. I was fancying Steak and Ale pie with some greens and that's what I got. It was gorgeous and exceeded expectations. Staff couldn't be any bigger. Thanks so much

Nice village and we picked this pub to have tea. 4 adults and 2 young boys enjoyed a delicious home cooked meal. I had the salmon which was really well presented and cooked to perfection. Well worth a visit. The pub seemed to be popular and was doing brisk business on an early Friday evening.

Table serve was terrible. Some staff were friendly but no one checked if we were all right. We waited 40 minutes to be served. Salmon dish was disgusting, burnt in some places and under cook and slimy in other places. Drizzled lemon juice on the new potatoes and dripping with grease. The beef lasagna was greasy and cheese burnt and sickly and swimming in the grease. Like a pizza with the wrong cheese in it. Bacon burger was okay and the chicken curry was runny but okay taste. Charged for 4 pints when only got 2 £82 overall just for mains and drinks and definitely not worth the price or the time going there.

I had the steak and chips. Awful. We sat on bar stools which were very uncomfortable. Will not go again.

Fantastic little find this. Not only were the staff really really friendly towards us and our dog, but the food was amazing. Nice clean & tidy place, lovely atmosphere and quite simply one of THE best if not the best burger I've had (and I've had some burgers!). I recommend the Euro Burger. Thanks for the hospitality. 5 stars from me.

Had a meal here the other day. Asked if they were home made chips for the meal, the gentleman advised they were home made chips, they were not. So no one in the group liked them. The meal itself was okay, but very expensive for what you get. The waffle with the ice cream was another issue, we needed a knife to cut the waffle! And even struggled cutting it with the knife.! So in short if your not bothered about spending loads of money on just about okay food, this would be ideal. I'm not going back anytime soon

Very nice Bistro pub in the centre of Pocklington . Quite an extensive and interesting menu, some decent beers on tap. Seems very popular with locals so probably best to book. Not cheap but not super expensive and the food was quality. Only slight downside was the wait for food, with quite a long time between courses, but will put that down to the staffing problems everyone has at present. Won't stop us going back.

Prices slightly steep for portion size and quality. Lovely atmosphere. One portion of chips tasted very strange and was inedible, brushed off by staff but something had definitely gone wrong when cooking them, possibly cooked in oil contaminated by something else or gone off. Starters were delicious as was the main which redeems the rating. £6.50 a pint too 😭

Unbelievable. Mouldy bun and gas lighting. Went here with two friends pre-show; seemed a nice enough place. I had ordered a burger, lifted up the under bun and saw mould. Alerted the waiter and he took it back to the kitchen. Returned 5 mins later with the same plate telling me the chef said it was the way the bun was floured and toasted. There were flour, bits charred from toasting -and GREEN mould. I apologised I could not eat it and ordered something else. Someone else came out 10 minutes later said he looked at it and there was nothing wrong with the food. Absolutely unbelievable. Wished I had taken a picture but did not want to cause a scene at the time since it could have been easily overlooked with a sincere apology and prompt new order. The best part! They tried to charge me for the mouldy burger and the replacement. Wow.

Highly recommend this venue Had an absolutely amazingly Scrumptious meal Treated for my birthday on the busiest of nights Easter Saturday! But the staff , Ambiance and more importantly the meal was Truly Scrumptious Can’t wait to return Thankyou so much Judson’s definitely above 5 stars

Warm and welcoming on a cold night. Delicious food and excellent wine, a really enjoyable evening.

So Judsons seem to be a place where people either hate it or love it. The fire and sofas are back! Excellent. . Food has always been very good and a good selection of beers and wines. Yes it’s quite pricey but it’s always busy so they must be doing something right.

Ate here past 2 sundays for sunday lunch. Todays meal was just as good as last week. Hot. Tasty. Presentation 👌

Food was really nice, the burger was amazing and staff were lovely but not the most family friendly. We was sat at a high table and chairs and given a really short high chair for baby😂 I think usually there would be more suitable tables but was busy the night we went.

Food as always was amazing but today's service was very slow and staff seemed to have no interest in providing the normal customer experience. We travel as a group to visit friends who live locally and when in the area make a deliberate visit due to the food. Tonight's experience has substantially damaged our opinion of this restaurant (covid issues or not this service is not acceptable)

Really enjoyed our early evening meal very tasty and fresh I had seafood linguine my OH had lasagne. From the moment we walked in we were made to feel welcome by the manageress and staff, on a very busy Saturday night. Would recommend. We'll be going again.

Honestly the best food and service we’ve ever had. From York and have come to pocklington for the weekend. Would 100% recommend to friends, family and anyone reading this. Great selection of foods, incredible food and amazing service. Would come again

Arrived at Sunday lunchtime and was very impressed. Hot food menu looked very tasty but as I was cycling with friends choose a lighter chicken and bacon sandwich. This was very nice indeed. Accompanying thick chips and mayo great too. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Beer selection was varied with some well kept bitter. All in all really good. If only Pocklington didn't have that bloody great hill to cycle up I'd probably visit more often!

First time I have had this Franklin's drink which was really nice and refreshing. Nice area but surroundings but looked like it needed a bit of a clean and tidy up, possibly as its bank holiday Monday but after hearing reviews I thought it would be a bit more to top. Staff didnt come to ask us what we wanted to order food wise despite sitting ourselves in dining area and getting our own menus. Has potential to be really nice but I wont be rushing back.

Lovely coffee and great service but, and i hate to do this, the music was so hideously awful i couldn't even finish my cup. Recorded fashionable pop music but sung so excruciatingly badly by 'artists ' that had no business singing let alone recording it. it was torture. But if you don't mind that sort of thing then it's a nice place

Used to be one of the best bars in Pocklington but unfortunately now seems to have gone downhill some what! Went in on the Tuesday lunchtime before Christmas and wished I hadn't as I was entertaining a business partner. Wash buckets left standing next to dining area and 3 x coal bags left for the whole of the lunch period right in front of the bar on the floor for anyone to trip over. Downstairs toilet was filthy and needed an air freshener at the very least. Christmas lights stuck on stairs with strips of unsightly pieces of silver gaffer tape everywhere. Sad really as this place used to be the "go to" bar but sadly not anymore.

Always lovely food when I go and the drinks are nice too. Staff are always friendly and never have to wait long to be served. Been on numerous occasions and never dissapointed.

Good food, excellent service, nice food pub

Dreadful food. Having waited 45 minutes at least after ordering, the Thai fish cakes were not like any I've ever seen - small thin discs, overdone to burnt, and very dry. Not sure what fish (s), seemed like pressed cod roe at its worst. Salad was so full of chilli it was inedible. Needless to say it was sent back. Hubby had a steak sandwich, steak was cold. Having worked in the hospitality business for 15 years, 'chef's night off is not an excuse. You either don't serve food or offer a limited menu you can cope with as it wasn't exactly busy with folk eating. Unless the manager is a capable chef, he should not be in the kitchen cooking. Brother and sister-in-law recommended this place and were mortified. Both girls front-of-house were excellent - very friendly and efficient, and it is very dog-friendly. The dogs ended up eating more than I did!

Visiting friends for the weekend, having never been to Pocklington before our friends recommended this restaurant. The food was very nice and the service was especially good.
