Jolly Sailor Pub in Stockport

I like the decor, atmosphere and the food is decent / good pub quality. My main gripe is the service charge automatically added to your bill! (Yes I know you can ask for it to be removed but this can make you feel uncomfortable) This trend is an unwelcome trend from USA where it's used to subsidise staff wages, whereas in England it's been to show appreciation for exceptional experience. So is this to subsidise wages and if so why? Or is it a way of keeping menu prices lower than they would otherwise be, not that it's particularly cheap in first place. Id struggle to believe it's to make life easier for customers or simplify the giving of tips, interested to hear pub feedback.

We were a big party of 15 that had a meal at the Jolly Sailor. The professionalism and friendliness from all the staff really shone through, they were so attentive and did everything to make it a joyful, memorable family meal. The food was fabulous- everyone enjoyed it and desserts were delicious. Shout out to James who was very friendly when I phoned to book the table , shout out to Dave who was just 'brilliant 👏 in everything......and to all the other staff who worked so hard as the restaurant was full. Will definitely go again and would highly recommend others to try this place.

We met up for a “meeting”, had a lovely sever Dillon. Absolute super star, very friendly, pleasant and attentive. A credit to the Jolly.

Visited with family and friends (mum her friend and my friend) wow what can I say beautiful the food was out of this world very fresh and yes we did treat ourselves to a chocolate cake yummy!!! Our server Sarah was incredible very friendly and knowledgeable amazing. Be back soon xxx

Excellent last minute choice for post-cinema supper. Starters as mains were substantial enough to satisfy & were tasty.

Ex meal great atmosphere and great value for money

Went in for dinner with family. The staff were friendly and attentive. Food arrives in good time and was well cooked and nicely presented. Good choice of drinks at the bar however a few more AF choices would be good. Took a star off atmosphere as the music was very loud and made it tricky to have a conversation as we were at a biggish table.

Arrived at 19.30 and asked for Sunday carvery. We were a party of over 12. 3 of us chosen carvery and we're told that we would be informed when we could go up for our food. 20:15 we then went for our food, very little option's in terms of veg. I'm a lover of parsnip's and the roasties but sadly there were no parsnip's tonight and roasties weren't the best, the worst was though as soon as I took my plate away all the food got put away! I was shocked as normally these guys do a great roast. No matter what the time was!

Nice meal. Not really a dog friendly pub. You can't reserve a table with a dog, so its pot luck if they have space. Worth a try as pub is good. Dogs not allowed on a Sunday.

Easy booking. Arrived 30 minutes early but no problem. Tasty food and good size portions

My dad and I come here quite regularly to just relax and have some "Dad&Daughter" time to catch up. We visited on my Dad's birthday the other day and were greeted by the manager Dave, who is always really lovely and personable and remembers things about each of his regular customers and makes time to politely chat to everyone and make them feel important, whilst still offering excellent and efficient service to all customers. I don't usually drink bitter but decided to have a pint of bitter (instead of my usual glass of wine) to join my Dad in his favourite drink and we had the Black Sheep bitter and even though I'm not a bitter drinker, it tasted lovely and creamy and I actually really enjoyed it. Food, as always was cooked to perfection and served in a timely manner - not too quick and not too late. Dad and I absolutely love coming here and Dave always makes my Dad's day.

Carvery, cold yorkies , went cold quick. Otherwise excellent.

Visited for a family meal a couple of times recently. Good for food and it’s a lovely pub. The service is what sets it apart - it’s excellent.

Id class us as "regulars" now. We went back today and we were served by Emily, who remembered us, and our daughter- that personal touch really does make the difference. Once again the food was great. we've joined the loyalty club too! Delicious carvery... 😋 great ambiance plenty of parking. Good kids menu all round great family pub 👌🏻

Food 10/10 Staff very friendly just a shame we was given the dessert menu and then nobody came to take our order :( really wanted that apple crumble but am sure there will be a next time!

We love visiting the Almond pubs, and decided to try the Jolly Sailor for our anniversary. We went on a Sunday afternoon, but it was very noisy. We were taken to a table next to the entrance door which customers kept leaving open and staff didn't close it, I had to get up twice to close it. When we were seated we were only asked what we wanted to drink even though we already had drinks, and had to wait for another member of staff to pass by before we could order our food. Not the service we are used to from the Almond pubs. The food was very nice and cooked well apart from the broccoli that was so under cooked it was verging on raw. At no time were we asked if we enjoyed the food, which always happens at your other venues. We won't be returning to the Jolly Sailor but will continue to frequent your other venues.

NYE lunch with my friend. The food was great, it was the start of the day for the carvery so it was very fresh. Great quality. The carrots weren’t that great extremely Al Dente. but overall it was good. You could tell the staff were new. We had few drink problems, returning drinks with lipstick stained glasses, ordered a jug of water and got a glass. Ordered two gins and the girl mixed up the check when bringing it out, she didn’t read it properly I think as the boy serving us brought it back from the bar as it was made correctly. We’re both former Almond Pub staff so we know what to expect, but believe the standards have slipped a bit with the staff training. Not as attentive as other places. India the manager had to come and clear our table, no check back. It’s the little things. The young dark haired lad was very lovely, thank you.

Always great tasting hot food. We love the carvery and it’s always a go to choice for the whole family from the youngest to the eldest.

Went for Christmas Dinner and everything was excellent. All the food went down well and the drinks were great. The staff were excellent, the usual relaxed, friendly and attentive service.

Possibly the best chips I've ever had, so so crispy! Rest of our food was also lovely and the menu has some interesting options a bit different to standard pub grub.

Came for the christmas day carvery today, starter and sweet were amazing as were your staff, but sadly your carvery was a major disappointment, 1 slice of wafer thin turkey and 1 slice of wafer thin beef which was fatty. Vegatables were either over done or hard. yorkshire puddings were cold. stuffing balls inedible. for a cost of 85 pound per person just wasnt upto standard and not at all enjoyable very disappointed.

Food was lovely, service great! Really busy with it being Xmas eve with big parties but everything was spot on. Carvery was great, pigs in blankets definitely a good add on! Only disappointing thing was the yorky pud was a little tough!

Just an amazing place to eat,especially the Sunday roast.

Booking the table by phone was simple and dealt with efficiently by a pleasant friendly member of the team. The in house experience was very welcoming. Food options catered for my daughters needs. Good quality and tasty meals which we both enjoyed. Will be going again soon.

Almond pubs have never let us down apart from this evening. The steak and Ale pie was ok. However when you are asked wether you prefer chunky chips or mash and you choose chunky chips you should get chunky chips. Not frozen, four times, over fried scraps of brittle crunch with no potato in the centre at all. Needless to say we sent them back!!! Approximately ten minutes later the pies were back with the afore mentioned chunky chips, (all 7 of them) yes 7 whole chips. WOW !!!! The gravy was cold as were the peas and the pie had clearly been reheated before reserving. All in all a very disappointing meal. On a good not the staff Emily and Molly dealt with the situation graciously. Thank you to you both.

My colleagues had the carvery which seemed to be bland and very uninspired. My roast salmon, on the other hand, was well cooked and beautifully presented on a bed of well cooked - ie not overcooked vegetables.

Nothing really against the place. Busy so others obviously have a different opinion than mine. Loud, not cheap. Just not my cup of tea

Big shout out to Anya and Emily!!! Faultless service from these two fabulous members of staff. Nothing was too much trouble, which meant the whole evening was an absolute joy. Emily even popped out to the shops to get some semi skimmed milk that had been requested in a coffee. Above and beyond all round!!

26/11/23: Food was excellent as usual, loved the carvery! Shame they've stopped doing it in the week. Some very attentive service from Emily. A bit noisy for kids with Autism and nowhere comfortable to sit down pre-meal to socialise and have a drink. Sadly too cold (and dark!) to sit outside.

Went to celebrate a friend’s 40th. Staff were excellent, could not do enough for us. Emily in particular was really great and helped us with the cake and to get everyone to sing happy birthday and embarrass our friend! 😂 Would highly recommend, food and atmosphere really nice as well. Will go again!

I've been to this pub so many times. Lovely decor, great carvery and friendly staff. I also visit other Almond pubs as you get the same friendly atmosphere and service at all of them. Prices are decent and I will definitely be returning.

Busy and lovely atmosphere. Man playing keyboard very good. Only went for a drink but the food coming out of kitchen looked very appetising. Booked to go for early eve Christmas meal with friends in December. £20 for main and dessert with festive menu. Looking forward to going.

Lovely Sunday lunch Several of us had the carvery which was plentiful and delicious. Roast beef was cooked perfectly for me. My mum likes it less pink so had to change her choice. She had turkey instead which she said was juicy and tasty. The others in our party also said their food was delicious and ample portion sizes All served efficiently by friendly staff. The good food, reasonable prices and lovely service was reflected in the number of people dining. I would advise booking in advance

Friends recommended this place as it's dog friendly and we thought we would pop in before a 3 hour journey home only to be turned away as no dogs allowed on a Sunday. You're either dog friendly or not.

Popped along here on a visit (pre-birthday lunch) at the suggestion of the local family members. Glad they did - as this was an excellent venue for a very tasty lunch. While it might not be the cheapest eats around, the food was incredibly tasty, the welcome warm, the dining room superb and the service second to none. The Beyond Meat vegan burger - just YUM!!! Top fries too. Without a doubt next time we're in the area looking for somewhere to meet up and lunch - the Jolly Sailor is going to be among the top choices! Thanks!!!

Great beer, lovely traditional bar area and a big glass extension to the rear which catches the sun.

The Wraps were delicious but the chicken goujons were dry and overcooked but the manager did not charge us for them and was apologetic and friendly. The service was first class .

Myself and my parents went for lunch on Saturday and I can’t find one fault with the service, the food or the establishment itself. Dad is elderly and walks with a stick, Dave who I believe is a manager rushed to open the door for us and showed us our table. From then on the service was as impeccable as the welcome, and the food was beautiful. My dad who is very hard to please had “the best fish and chips I’ve had ever had” while mum and I had the fish pie, all of which was perfectly cooked and we all thoroughly enjoyed. Holly our waitress was attentive and a pleasure to speak with, there is such a great team here it’s lovely to see. We will definitely come back more often thank you for making our Saturday afternoon so enjoyable.

My family and I went here for a meal tonight and were really impressed. The place was busy with a bustling atmosphere and the food and service were both really good. The pub itself is very smart inside. We’ll definitely be returning.

My food was very nice, hot and I enjoyed it. My son told me his food from the carvery was cold. Definitely not warm. I told him he should have said something to the staff. I will be going back.

The venue was nice, with pleasent staff whom were attentive. Food was ok, most of us had the carvary. The meat was excellent however the veg was a little dry and the cauliflower cheese didn't have enough sauce in it. For the price it was OK and I would try it again as I have only been once and it had been recommended by a number of people.

We went for a family birthday with adults and children - a challenge for the restaurant. The carvery was outstanding (make sure you have the pigs in blankets). Children's portions and menu options were perfect. Staff courteous and friendly. A great meal

Worst salad had. Dressing should have been on side, instead the salad was saturated in it. The goats cheese was cold and solid plonked on the top. Usually goats cheese is warmed before placing on top of the salad.

Went for the Sunday Carvery my self and My Hubby - wanted to try it out as there are 24 of us due to go to the Christmas Carvery - - very nice welcome But was a bit disappointed - although like my meat sliced thin - this could not be any thinner and if I had a chance to weigh it I don't think it would have weighed more than a couple of Ounces plus this is not a Cheap carvery £15 each so would expect a decent size portion of meat. We will be paying the Bill at Christmas for our Family so I think rightly concerned they may not have much meat as they Normally get on Our Christmas Outings compared to the size of the bill we will get - Also when we got our Bill they had charged over £80 and a tip of £7 -so said to the waitress we only had 2 Meals and 2 drinks - she corrected it but no Idea how it had come to that price -- so will be Extra Alert in December. Compared to other Sunday Lunches we have tried out over the last month or so - I would rate it as Poor for the price .

Very busy, which made it a vibrant atmosphere. My fish pie was very good and my friend loved her meal, which I think was a Mediterranean pie ... apparently the pastry was delicious. The serving staff were brilliant, but the deputy general manager, who is at present a Fletcher's Arms orphan, was very attentive! :-) The beer selection looked quite eclectic too, which I like. You have to have variation!

A very welcoming bar/restaurant. Was very busy for a Tuesday lunchtime but once served was very understandable as to why! A great meeting place for friends and family to have a splendid lunch as reasonable price.

Our first visit to the Jolly Sailor since it's refurbishment for a family carvery & a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Fully recommended & now added to our favourites list for Sunday grub.

This was the best carvery I have had in ages. The quality of the food was second to none. The meat melted in your mouth, the vegetables were perfectly done, the gravy delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the cost quite amazing. Recommend to everyone and we'll be back next time we're up north.

Lovely food, and very nice waitresses. I had the teriyaki noodles with salmon, really nice. My husband had a chicken breast burger which he also said was lovely, and my son had the lasagne. The service was nice and quick for both drinks and food - very good experience.

A wonderful afternoon spent at the Jolly Sailor celebrating a family members 90th birthday. The whole experience was 10/10. The food, the service was exceptional. All 28 of our party had a terrific time. Our server Faye was exceptional. You will thoroughly enjoy the ambience, the food, the drink and the prices are so reasonable. Absolutely recommend.

Best carvery for miles, fantastic venue

Visited yesterday for a work lunch. I had the diablo pizza, and it was delicious and huge! The food didn't take long to arrive and service was good. Would definitely visit again, food is a little expensive but definitely worth it for the pizza.

We enjoyed an amazing meal at the jolly sailor with great service from the staff. I had the chicken burger and my girlfriend had the lasagna. Burger was much smaller than anticipated, and much smaller than other pubs in the surrounding area that I have eaten at, but was very tasty and served with some of the nicest fries I’ve ever had. Lasagna was great too, very creamy and served piping hot with some beautiful garlic bread. We accidentally dined on quiz night, however the speaker system wasn’t too intrusive and we were able to enjoy our dinner before it properly started and became too much of a distraction. A great pit stop for a pint too between bramhall and davenport.

Went to the jolly last week for my mums birthday Food and service was excellent. Even had a gluten-free option for my daughter. Definitely the best food I've had in a good long while.

Decent pub with good staff, the senior staff especially. A few of the more junior bar tenders need a bit of a heads up to try serve people in order. I find if you don’t stand in and around the pillar on the bar where the till is you can be waiting way longer than you should be. It is rare though. Everything else great.

We came as a party of 12 half of which had the carvery. Sorry to say that i was very dissappointed to see that the meat was being cut with the same knife and on the same board. Cross comtamination is a huge deal within this industry. Glad i didnt have the carvery

We have driven past this place for years and never had the time to call in having had many recommendations to give it a try. This Monday evening we had no excuse and wow we were we blown away with the food and service. We both tried the burger off the specials menu and were really happy we did. Excellent and great value. We couldn’t get over how busy the pub was for a Monday evening - says it all really.
