The menu that is shown is no longer available since the pub has H ' changed hands. It was very disappointing as we went a celebration . The place was very cold and was told to sit near a radiator which then went cold.

Great food, friendly service, good value. We have always found the owner, her son and staff to be very friendly, welcoming and accommodating. The food is always served piping hot and delicious. It's also a bonus for us that they are dog friendly. Louie loves visiting The Jolly. Looking forward to trying a weekend cooked breakfast soon.

Went for a night stop over whist visiting family . Unfortunately it wasn’t what we expected . It had no facilities in the room ie, no tea or coffee , water still in kettle from previous person god knows how long it was before us, only hand towels available until we’d asked a couple of times for more.Felt intimidated as if we were an inconvenience and not welcome by landlady and regulars No information about checkout and where to leave keys . Overall inadequate communication and facilities. Had a meal there which was nice tbh but not exceptional and had to wait ages for it not the best of experiences Will not be returning

I was travelling through the area with a friend and we called in for a pint and lunch. We both chose the steak and mushroom pie, chips and veg. We had not been waiting long when the food arrived, it was a large individual pie, loads of chips and individual tureen with vegetables. The Landlady returned after a few minutes with seperate extra gravy boats each. The pie was stuffed full of lean tasty meat, mushrooms mingled in, one of the best I have ever had! Well cooked chips and vegetables, a real feast. Both Landlord and Landlady made us welcome and asked a couple of times if all was alright, no problems there, really great food. Guinness is spot on too!

The pub is on main road through the village, but on a night easy to miss. With covid restrictions we booked for early meal, glad I'd not eaten much during the day, the portion sizes are very generous. I had the steak pie, lovely pastry, well filled with meat, which was tender and mushrooms, lovely gravy. Option of veg or chips. My wife had the scampy, plenty on her plate. Friends had the cumberland sausage and the fish pie both looked very nice. With drinks about £25 per couple. Only managed a main course each. Very friendly and attentive staff, nothing too much trouble. Will be back!

The food choice was very poor, I wanted a mixed grill but it was Tipp-Ex out on the menu?! in fact a lot of the food on the menu appeared Tripp-Ex out! Chose the madras in the end, it tasted like a microwave curry meal from a bargain food shop! The lighting in the restaurant was very dark and very poor decor! But its Lucky that most people do not stay in Newport in the East Riding of Yorkshire! If you do, just have a drink in the jolly sailor, but avoid the food

Called in here by chance for lunch whilst in area on family matters. Initially not impressed as given my g&t in a glass with ice, no garnish and all the tonic poured in. However that was the worst thing about our visit - the food is amazing value, traditional pub food, nicely presented, large portions, hot, freshly prepared and very tasty. The staff were very friendly, the food service was prompt and we had a partial view into the kitchen from our table so there's obviously nothing to hide.We aren't likely to be back in the area for a long time, which is disappointing as I would happily come here again. The pub was quite busy and I can totally understand why. We were very restrained and only had our main courses and a couple of drinks each. It's excellent value and well worth visiting if you're in the area

Had lunch here with a friend. I had the fish cakes which were delicious and came with a very interesting salad- mixture of leaves, tomato, red, green and yellow peppers and some coleslaw. My friend had the roast turkey which she felt was wonderful. I'm gluten intolerant and the staff were very knowledgeable about the allergens in various dishes. The fish and chips seemed popular with other guests, and it looked very tempting. Large portions and very reasonable prices. The loo was clean and pleasant and on the same floor as the restaurant, with no steps if memory serves me right. If I were to criticise- and I have no right to, bearing in mind the overall experience- I'd say it's a bit odd to have to order at the bar in a room which looks very like a diner or bistro.

Our meal arrived after about 45 mins and we were all commenting on the size of the meals. I had the lamb shank on mashed potato and a generous serving of fresh vegetables served on a separate dish,my father had haddock and chips (more like the size of a shark) my sister had a beef dinner (she mentioned to the waitress that it was a bit tough)and my partner had belly pork on mustard mash. We managed to have a sweet each apart from my father who was stuffed after his main.No doubt we will be returning in the near future just hope that they don't lower their standards as to me they are pretty high at the moment. Having eaten at the Jolly Sailor Inn several times while on business in the area last October, work brought me back in April this year. This time, as well as eating, I stayed at the Jolly Sailor, albeit just for one night. One of the locals previously said to me "you don't think it'd be up to much" - how wrong that perception is.In my last review for a food only review over numerous visits, I awarded the the Jolly Sailor top marks - and again this time around.I was shown to a nicely appointed room, contemporary in style, with a wonderfully comfortable bed. There is the added convenience of a separate exterior entrance to the pub so you can come and go as you please without having to enter the pub.The food yet again excelled and I'm delighted to report that the portion sizes have not lessened since October.I recommended it then, I still do and I would still return and recommend others to do the same - time and time again. If only other pubs were like the Jolly Sailor.

Booked this for a Sunday lunch for family group after wedding previous night. Beth took the call (later found out she was second chef) and was very helpful with the booking.Arrived before the doors opened at 12 noon and wondered if made mistake as exterior is grim and car park even worse but from minute went through the door was made to feel very welcome, served drinks by attentive bar staff who chatted.Given menus, which were slightly torn with sticky labels changing dishes available, and made our choices, again looking at each other and wondering if we had made the right choice. From the bar could see into the kitchen and food preparation looked professional and hygienic (used to work in restaurant trade so knew what to look for). The first course came out. The home-made fish cake was about two inches high and the same diameter, packed with four different types of fish with barely enough potato to hold it together. Tasty just doesn't describe it. With the fresh salad garnish and delicious sweet chilli dipping sauce this could easily be a meal in itself.Other members of the party had the prawn cocktail starter which came as a mound – almost a small hill – of prawns in a delicious sauce and again excellent salad garnish.Sadly the chicken soup chosen by one of our group didn’t match the other starters. On to the main course and all had chosen a Sunday roast. My beef – all five, thick slices around four inches long and nearly two inches wide, was cooked to perfection as was the Yorkshire pudding and the five different vegetables – carrots, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli and parsnips. The roast potatoes were slightly over cooked on the outside but deliciously crisp with soft, floury insides – yummy. And the gravy provoked a wow taste that gravy from my 18-year-old half cousin; we did and had the same reaction. The lamb and pork was similarly well cooked and in similar proportions. The “small adult” portion seemed to have one less slice of meat but otherwise was the same.On being offered the dessert menu only three felt they could eat one – very unusual in our party – but the first two courses had been so filling and delicious. The desserts that came were eventually shared out as they too were clearly home-made cheesecake (gluten free) and chocolate fudge cake. Coffees came piping hot and with two of those mini-cartons of cream (cream or milk in a jug may have been better but at least they didn’t leave you with only one little tub).Throughout the meal staff were attentive but not intrusive, responded rapidly to any request (e.g. extra drinks) and were extremely pleasant. Even Beth came out of the kitchen and asked if all was ok with the meal as she had taken the booking. With two drinks before the meal and drinks keeping flowing during the meal the total cost for eight adults was £132 - £16.50 per head was excellent value and made it easy to see why The Jolly Sailor was such a busy place to eat. We watched other diners struggle to finish a forest full of garlic mushrooms as a starter as well as massive portions of different pies and a fish so big it would have swam off the plate if the chips were not in a wall surrounding it.Toilets were clean and pleasant to use.Highly recommend visiting for a meal and don’t let the exterior put you off, appearances can be deceptive.

I visit this pub restaurant reasonably regularly, and the food is always good. For whatever reason, tonight's Steak Diane special was extra special. As is usually case here, the restaurant area was pretty busy. The only thing I could suggest for them is some organisation in the ordering process. When I got to the bar, there was one young man serving drinks to a couple. I was the only other person at the bar. There were three young girls standing at the end of the bar talking to each other. I couldn't tell if they were staff or customers. Eventually one of them asked if I was being served. I said no, so she got the barman to come over. I told him I was ready to order food, and he said I needed to do that with one of the three girls. So I ordered food from one of them, and asked for a drink. She said I had to order that from the barman. Then I said I was ready to pay for it all now, and she said she needed to bring somebody else over, presumably the boss, to settle the bill. A lot of confusion for what's a simple process in most other pubs. But the food is great.

Went here last night with our family for a nice meal. The waiting time for our starters was around the half hour mark.i had the tiger prawns option with garlic which was really tasty and arrived with a small bread roll but no butter which was a bit odd. The side salad was just right it was just the waiting time that was a bit of a let down.My main was a haddock and chips option and I was asked if I wanted mushy peas or garden peas and being a traditional gal I opted for mushy but on arrival wish I hadn't! It was obvious the meal had been sat under a heating light as the peas had a light skin over them and weren't very nice but I have to say that the fish was huge! I ordered the small size so beware... the large option is gonna be huge! The meal itself was tasty but unfortunately decidedly average. There was also a group of noisy young women in behind our table which meant that we couldn't hear ourselves think but I guess it is Christmas. It would have been nicer if there had been a separate room for larger parties as the main dining room here isn't very big which made the noise even louder than normal. All in all I think I would go back and try this again on a mid-week visit to see if things are different but it was a good average meal.

Food available in the evening but book or be prepared to wait for table - especially on Friday and Saturdays. Prices are good and food is simple and well prepared. A no frills evening out.

We stopped at the 'Jolly Sailor Inn' from 19th. - 23rd. September 2014 mainly for the convenience of visiting friends in the area. The Inn had some newly refurbished En Suite rooms which were very comfortable. We had intended to eat at the restaurant on the first night and just eat wherever we were visiting at the time, however the food at the 'Jolly' was so good with very generous servings we returned from our daily trips back to the restaurant every evening. A wide choice of breakfasts were also available at a time to suit the visitor. The whole of our stay was made very nice due to welcoming staff and very competitive prices. Newport is a very flat area which makes it ideal for walking and cycling and being only 1 mile from the M62 make access very convenient. We would recommend this establishment to anyone thinking of visiting the area.

My husband two friends and myself have been traverling around yorkshire and visited the jolly sailor pub two weeks ago, staff very friendly, food good, but the only thing that let it down was the cleansliness, we were sat near the emergency door which had a plastic curtain, it was very dirty, needs a good clean which also applies to the chairs they are very badly stained! the chief looks like he needs a good clean also.i bet your wondering why we stayed, well we were very hungry and were glad we did stay as the food was very good. just needs a good clean.

Spent a night near Newport and went to this pub for a meal on 8th June, with my wife. The pub looks pretty ordinary and to be honest it is fairly basic as regards decor.however our meal was first class and the portion size very generous. I had the biggest steak and ale pie I have ever had with vegetables which tasted very fresh. My wife had an enormous haddock and chips, which she enjoyed. The prices are reasonable and I found the bar and serving staff to be friendly, polite and efficient. In summing up ,if you don't mind the basic decor I would recommend this pub for a good drink and hearty meal.

Went for tea with my wife last Saturday and enjoyed everything! The prices were great, the food was to die for, the beer was good and the staff were absolutely impeccable! The only downside I had was that we had to wait a while for the table however it was our own fault for not booking in advance. -Would definitely recommend this place to anyone!

Always come to the jolly for the Fish and Chip night on a Thursday, never disappointed, generous portions and quick service. As we live in the south of England it is good to know where to come for good pub food that is always well cooked.

I visited here with a friend. The meals are good value and very generous portions. The meals are typical pub meals, nothing too elaborate, but if you like plain and simple foods and plenty of it, then this is the place for you!

. . . make up your own mind. We visited on Friday lunch time and had booked a table for 4 for 12.15pm which was just as well as it was very busy (Yorkshire folk obviously eat early). The specials at £3.95 are extremely good value and don't seem to be limited to pensioners. We had two specials: fish and chips (huge portions and freshly cooked) and a pasta bake with garlic bread (again, good portion and VFM). The regular mains were equally good: lasagne and chips (excellent and with an unexpected side salad) and steak pie and chips (large portion from a large pie, short crust pastry and lovely chunks of beef). A pudding of chocolate fudge cake (£3.95) was enough for two to share, particularly after such large mains. The down sides: the female manageress isn't terribly friendly and when I pointed out that she'd not charged me for the drinks, wasn't particularly grateful. When I asked what white wine they had, the girl just pointed to the fridge which had two different bottles. And finally the decor and carpet could do with updating. On balance, it's worth trying for the quality and value of the food.

The Jolly Sailor used to be our first choice for eating out. Unfortunately their prices recently increased making it poor value. We visited on a Saturday evening and were surprised at the lack of customers. On Monday to Friday lunch times they offer a limited number of pensioner specials at £3.95 (not to be confused with the expensive evening specials). We have not had one recently, but in the past these specials were full size meals and of excellent value. You don't need to be a pensioner to order those cut price meals.

The Jolly Sailor Inn is on the main road going through Newport, to the west of Brough. I mention this because it's post code designates it as Brough, but don't go looking for it there, it's in the village of Newport, about seven miles away. But it is worth tracking down, if you're in the area. The food is great, and the portions are big, I mean big. As a pub, it's fine, right selection, right prices, etc. But as a restaurant, it's great value for the money. Look out for their specials nights on Thursdays and Fridays. They also do fish and chips for seniors during lunch, at reduced prices. But the amount of food isn't reduced with this offer, as it would be in most places. You get a large fish that fills a large plate. The Jolly Sailor is also a bed and breakfast, which I've never had the occasion to use, but it's there anyway. It's on the main road, but there's parking and a nice garden at the back.

This a typical village pub serving a good selection of ales. The decor is somewhat dated but acceptable. The portions are huge! I had difficulty finishing my Gammon and Eggs and the single portion of homemade chips would have fed a family of four. The service was a bit hit and miss but the quality of the food is very good.

Ate here twice during a short trip away with family. Food was very good, nothing too fancy but just good pub grub. Staff were very friendly and service was very quick.Spaces for quite a few cars on the front and back, only negative comment is that due to the relatively small size of the eating area we had to wait for a table, although this was partly our fault for not booking before hand.Would recommend!

We found the Jolly Sailor just a mile off the end of the M62. It's in a convenient spot from which to visit Hull, Yorkshire's countryside and other local attractions which are within easy reach. The welcome was warm and friendly, the double en-suite room had a very comfortable bed; and the restaurant below served large portions of good food. Would highly recommend the huge haddock fresh from the local market for the fish and chips. Bring your appetite for any of the evening meals in particular

The food is pretty standard fare - the fish and chips portion was generous but the fish was tasteless, I had the Thai curry and it was so vile I couldn't eat it. Yuk. The welcome is non-existent and the dining room is flat and lifeless.

Stuck a pin in a ( google) map to find a breakfast one hour away from leaving holiday accommodation. What a find. Interesting decor showed off the home made cakes and savouries whilst we waited a few minutes for a table. Breakfast avocado with poached eggs on sourdough bread, sun dried tomatoes, chorizo and pea shoots was divine and substantial. Staff were friendly and obviously enjoyed serving and cooking as much as we enjoyed eating. Make a detour. Worth every mile and every penny.

A gem of a cafe, lovely staff, quality food. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, even making up a takeaway salad box and a sandwich to be collected later. Plus the cafe is dog friendly....

We visited over Easter and loved all the little chocolate eggs hidden around the cafe - kept the kids entertained whilst they waited for their food! Lovely cafe with a great menu. We ordered a range of different food but loved the halloumi burger and cheeseburger especially. It’s great that dogs are allowed in this cafe but as we don’t own a dog, even better that there are two areas - one for dogs and one where dogs aren’t allowed. Service was quick and with a smile, reasonably priced too for restaurant quality food. The only improvement needed is the toilet area - could do with a update!

I don’t often go into bakery shops but we were visiting Driffield today and spotted that there was a small seating area inside at the front of the shop and a larger area further in. We were ready for coffee and a snack The shop is obviously very popular as I had to join the queue but it gave me the opportunity to look at what was on offer. Vastly superior quality to what is available in other chain bakery shops and very well priced. I don’t eat bread but the sandwiches were definitely calling to me!😹
