Cute little LGBT bar/pub. I found out about this place through TikTok and visited during my travels to the UK. I unfortunately came during the week when not many people were there but was still very welcoming.

What a gem! A great friendly pub with the warmest welcome ever. The young man who welcomed us in was full of warmth and knowledge about the pub and the city. Great beer and the WiFi pleased our teens! Lovely inclusivity that is much needed in the world. I’d love this pub to be my local.

My brother and i came here for a drink one evening in mid April. The welcome from the two guys was really warm and the drinks reasonably priced, we sat in the garden, although still being April it was a bit on the cool side. The clientele seemed very friendly too. sadly we only had that night in Oxford, but we will definitely return.

Lovely place, and the staff are very well organised (if anything spills it's picked up immediately) BUT as it's advertised online and outside the venue as having an open fire, we were distraught at being told ( especially on a very cold Winter's night ) that only sometimes is it lit - dependent on how warm it is inside. We were cold and other pubs light their fires regardless. Other than that - it's great

This is a lovely place, which has become something of a second home since I discovered it a couple of years ago. The building is a beautiful quirky old place, the staff are marvellous; kind, friendly, helpful, very efficient, and keep an eagle eye on things so that nothing goes wrong. A great eclectic collection of books to read if one is on one's own as well as a range of board games, and I have met many new friends there (the staff have become good friends too), and there is a great atmosphere. I love Sherlock the Bassett Hound when he makes an appearance too! A really nice mixture of types and ages of people, and a remarkably friendly atmosphere that makes it more like a lively and very good country pub than most town pubs. Pleasant background music but not too loud so conversation is easy, all too rare these days. A relaxed, welcoming, place and highly recommended.

It's a really nice, cozy pub. There is no food, and the beer selection is not huge, but that does not matter when one considers the ambience. It has a nice garden area, which is good both during summer and winter time, as it is heated. The interior is well decorated, and it has a very homely feeling. There are also some games there that the patrons can play, which goes rather well together with a pint. Although food is not served at this pub, it is possible to bring our own food or to order there, so there is no excuse not to spend some fun hours at this pub.

I was on a trip to Oxford with my wife and son who is starting his first year at Lady Margaret Hall. We had picked up a few bits at the nearby Westgate and I needed a drink after all that shopping!! The Jolly Farmers is a lovely old pub down a side street near the centre. Now Oxford is full of lovely looking old pubs, but what made the Jolly Farmers stick out on this occasion was the excellent service we received. My wife loves a gin and there was a good selection here including a couple she had not tried before. In other pubs, we have found that sometimes there is a lack of knowledge and interest in the products they serve, this was definitely not the case here! The member of staff took the time to find out what my wife usually drinks and then made sensible suggestions for her to try. The advice was spot on and we ended up staying for a couple as we felt so comfortable. My son is 18 and always carries his ID with him, it was checked properly here which I really like, It makes me feel that everything is being taken seriously and leads to an excellent, well run venue, very few other Oxford pubs checked his ID during our visit. I appreciate the we are not the target audience for the pub, but we were made to feel really welcome and we would have no hesitation to revisit when we are next in Oxford

An interesting quote from Hilaire Belloc in "The Death of the English Pub" (Christopher Hutt, 1973): "When you have lost your inns, drown your empty selves, for you will have lost the last of England". This very nearly came to pass at the hallowed Jolly Farmers, hub of the Oxford LGBTQ+ community for several decades. Following a few years of epic mismanagement, the pub became available to buy. Step forward two of the loveliest, clinically insane(?), hard-working chaps who refused to allow it to slip out of the Community's hands. The rescue and subsequent refurbishment was executed with breathtaking speed and aplomb, and the rainbow flag is once again flying PROUDLY.The JF is without a commercial kitchen, this is by no means a negative. Management actively encourage use of delivery apps (Deliveroo or JustEat), so anything from a sandwich, kebab, or burrito, up to a sumptuous Sunday lunch can be with you in less than half an hour. The monthly Thursday night supper club (select caterers set up in the fabulous heated beer garden) has recently launched with great success. The titillating array of drinks on offer includes something for everyone, at a very fair price. The pub has matured rapidly and now boasts a diverse, curious (some would say odd) following from across the social stratum. The environment is delightful; food for the soul, and cause for celebration. Thank you Rob, Spike (very pleasant man), and all of your wonderful, welcoming, hospitable crew looking after us in these 'unprecedented times'.

We had an overnight stay in Oxford and, following a stressful 24 hours, we hit the town. We found The Jolly Farmers late in the evening and wish we'd found it earlier. Nice place, great staff. We left my Missus's glasses there and didn't realise until we hit the south coast. I back-tracked our pub visits and contacted several, with The Jolly Farmers coming up trumps. The staff were VERY helpful, sent us a photo of the glasses and even posted them to our home for our return. They wouldn't even accept payment for the postage. This was way-over-the-top service and we're very grateful. We are donating our postage costs to a local Animal Refuge and will tell them that the gift is from T.J.F. Thanks so much. Rob & Ruth

I have been to this pub many times and loved the atmosphere but with Spike now running the place i wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. I have never been treated like that by anyone at any establishment. So new owners have taken over and boy they’ve made their mark, refreshing the decor, the drinks, the garden to mention a few things. The pub now has a warm, inviting and slightly curious Oxford nature to its decor. Oxford has always be home to many literary giants and stories which are reflected within this old pub. Quirky and fun and well thought out. Combine this with an improved and enlarged garden make it a great place for sunny days. The new owners have brought heart back to this venue which now feels inviting, caring and interested in its customers. It’s inclusive but not exclusive with everyone welcome in equal measures. Gone are the staff which found it a chore to serve you replaced with people who char and take an interest. Not a juke box in sight thank god, means you can have a chat, socialise and interact which surely is the point of a pub, is you want loud music, DJ and a dance find a night club. A pleasure to have this place back and will use it frequently, as I know I now want to make the journey into Oxford.

I loved this pub where attention has been paid to every detail, staff are warm and friendly and the general vibe is warm and relaxing. The beer garden is an oasis of calm and just a few minutes walk from the behemoth that is the Westgate. Inside the layout meanders with little snugs and more open areas. The sense of history is there, but it doesn't overwhelm. The bar is well stocked and when I was there (a weekday late afternoon) it felt like going on a mini-holiday. Loved it.

It's been many years since I last set foot in the Jolly Farmers - but I will be back very soon. I was lucky enough to stumble on this little gem of a pub soon after a takeover and make-over. The new team are doing great things - firstly with the internal decor, which is wonderful and perfectly in harmony with the outside of the building. The lack of any electronic machines, clicking and whistling is a further selling point, as far as I am concerned, as is the tasteful background music - at a level where you can choose to listen or easily chat over, with friends. There is very nice rear garden area, shaded and sheltered from the worse of the elements. Staff are charming and friendly, as are the landlords - who actually take the time to ensure that everyone is having a good time, something that others might learn from! Overall a very pleasant experience that I look forward to repeating. Thank you JFs.

Under new management, this is a MUST for anyone visiting Oxford. The pub and garden have been beautifully and thoughtfully refurbished in July 2020 - be sure to check out Lyra’s Room, a quirky tribute to Philip Pullman’s famous novels. The Jolly Farmers is an LGBT+ pub, open and welcoming to anyone and everyone, and it ranks as one of the oldest pubs in the city. Great selection of beers, wines, and spirits, and it also boasts the widest food menu in Oxford - you are actively encouraged to order any takeaway (excluding drinks, of course) to be delivered and enjoyed in one of the cosy indoor snugs, or in the large, sunny garden. The new owners and staff (including Sherlock, the resident Basset Hound), are incredibly welcoming, and the atmosphere is always fun and friendly. During COVID-19, the staff have a diligent cleaning and social-distancing regime in place, hand sanitiser is available throughout the pub and large garden, and a one-way system is in operation at the bar. This is a hidden gem, right in the city centre!

I've been drinking in the Jolly Farmers on and off since the 1990s, and have seen the place go through a number of transformations over the years; some great, some absolutely terrible. This latest incarnation of an old and much-loved Oxford pub is absolutely superb. The new owners, Spike and Rob, have re-imagined the place and it is now a clean, friendly, inviting place with a great variety of well-kept drinks. The redecoration is bright (and a little quirky!) and the new garden layout provides a great place to sit for a few hours. However, don't take my word for it. We went for a walk and stumbled apon this pub. They had a foam machine making it look like it was snowing outside.... i didnt mind this but the smell was very overpowering when you entered.

Beautifully decorated, Immaculate throughout. I had the pleasure of visiting this venue this weekend. The attention to detail and the attentiveness of the staff was second to none. A visit highly recommended

So a heterosexual guy walks in to a gay pub. It isn't advertised very well outside that it is a gay pub, though a quick google of the pub name set that straight, and I fear that by this stage in the evening I had drunk too much beer to care whilst on my route back to the train station. The service was friendly enough, and the drink selection tolerable. I did have one (very drunk) punter around my age flirting with me while I was in there - a regular, judging by others' interactions with him - but I was rescued by the friendly bar staff. This experience aside, the pub is still far from the best in Oxford: the inside is quite dark and dingy, and it definitely gives off the atmosphere of being a pub for its regulars, rather than, such as I, passing trade looking for a new pub to visit en route through the city centre.

Walked in and the bar smelt like dirty toilets. Thought ok give it a try as used to enjoy it here. Stood a bar totally ignored for a min so walked straight back out . Shane

Когда сюда заходишь, то понимаешь, что Оксфорд это город не для пьянства и веселья, а для учебы учебы учебы. Хороший выбор пива, коктейлей. Вечером много народу, большая часть туристы. Но в целом весело.

I love a pub that offers a good selection of wine so this is a winner for me. The service was good and the guys drinking at the bar were very friendly which is nice when you're on your own. Pinot was perfect; crisp and dry, beautifully chilled and served in a sparkling clean glass. Really can't complain. Pub interior is lovely, with big comfy sofas and intimate nooks. The music was at the perfect level to give a little ambiance. 5 stars, I will definitely be back! Thanks guys!

It appears that although they have done nice food in the past they have now stopped which is very inconvenient,

This was a nice pub in Oxford when I was visiting. Just a shame it wasn't busier. The outside garden was nice too. I could imagine having lazy afternoon drinks in the sun there.

Had a table booked for 4 of us for 3pm with a Groupon voucher that had been extended, arrived at 2.45pm, and the place was shut!!!! and now nobody is answering the phone!! What are you going to do to make it up to all the people that you have let down Jolly Farmers???? We went to another pub to eat at a cost to us, and it was very nice, but by this time we were very hungry, and would have eaten anywhere, well anywhere that was open.Very naughty of you really as you obviously had a lot of people booked in, can you please explain yourselves???

We arrived for our pre-booked meal and the pub was closed. No sign in the window to mention any problems as to why they weren't open. No phone call despite our details being left with them. This is not a good way to run a business. A simple phone call would have prevented a wasted journey and expensive parking. Can't comment on the food as we never got to taste it !!

Our nephew received a groupon voucher for his Birthday and decided to treat 4 of us to Sunday lunch today (22 December 2013). My niece called to confirm the booking yesterday (this was confirmed at the time). We arrived at 12 noon (opening time) to find the restaurant closed, with no sign of life at all. We stood outside for ~30 minutes in the cold, phoned (no answer), knocked on the door and window, all to no avail. Others were also left outside in the same situation. So very disappointing and a VERY POOR SHOW!! Not what we expect from any reputable establishment.

We had a Groupon deal for this pub, but when trying to book a meal in November, we were told that only one slot was left this year - in late December. This was unfortunate as we were hoping to do something else on this day, but no worries, we'll go for the meal instead. When we turned up, the pub was locked up with no staff members around, apart from 2 'cleaners' that locked up and scurried away. A number of other customers also turned up with tables booked, but eventually gave up and left like we did. A disgraceful way to treat potential customers and wasted our day. Avoid or risk going hungry...

Booked through groupon in a bid to spoil my mother (79) for her birthday and was very impressed. Lovely old building and very pleasant staff, we all had a fair portion of beef for main course. Not massive choice of meals but I'd rather have a limited choice that tastes good than a chef trying to master a plethora of dishes. All in all, a very nice Sunday lunch and one happy mother...need to keep in the old folks good books!!

We went for a three course Sunday lunch today, which was great. Had a Groupon voucher for four of us and were really impressed. Two of us were vegetarian, and the tomato soup for starter and butternut squash for main were delicious. All the carvery veg were well cooked ,not soggy and the puddings lovely too. Staff very helpful and attentive.Would certainly eat there again when visiting Oxford.

We went for Sunday lunch with two friends, using a Groupon voucher.unfortunately it was a bit of a let down. Our starters, garlic mushrooms, whitebait and pâté were straight out of a packet. The meat arrived and we took our plates to the buffet for vegetables which were frozen peas and carrots, some overlooked broccoli and an almost empty dish of cauliflower with white sauce along with some roast and boiled potatoes. We were told that more cauliflower was coming but we had finished our main course by the time it appeared. The wine list was very limited and what we ordered wasn't available.Puddings were nothing special, again out of a packet I would say. The buffet area is very small and you have to shuffle round trying to get past the people who are returning to their table.Staff however were very pleasant and did their best.

Though arriving earlier than our booking time of 13.30 on a Sunday we were given the worst table in the dark and damp basement with crumbling ceiling, no music etc! Service took ages. Starters well below average; soup must have been out of a ready can, pate from a cheap supermarket. When the main course finally arrived it was a half full plate of cold roasts and potatoes and we asked to go upstairs with our plates and help ourselves to the other veggies ! I refused to do so and they had to bring down a couple of plates of veggies, by which time everything was stone cold and the half warm gravy didn't help much. They only had one sachet of Heinz horse radish!! I didn't even bother with desert though my guests did because they had to order them when ordering food so obviously they wanted to know in advance in order to heat up what was left from the previous night! However the verdict was well below average. I will definitely not go there even if I am paid.

The Jolly Farmers has been a Gay pub for donkey's years. Very friendly staff there and good fresh ciders. There's an outside space where you can smoke and a downstairs space where you can play pool. Agreable space :-)

Popped in with family and had a fantastic Sunday Roast a lovely Carvery Style with all the veg under the sun you could eat. Wandered out in to the Lovely clean tidy garden area and sat and had lunch in the sun. Staff were extremely friendly and attentive even with a fair few other diners around for grub. Drinks very reasonably priced for being in a city centre location and at £6.95 for dinner that was an absolute steal! Definitely recommending to friends, family and the local congregation on a Sunday when I pop to church for them to pop along to The Jolly Farmers. Top job people keep up the good work!!!

I called on a Thursday to book for Sunday lunch and they said "yes, no problem".When we turned up at 13:00 for lunch, the pub was closed. After some minutes another group of people in the same situation arrived, they had also booked a table. Through the window you could see the pub was dirty and messy from the previous night. Eventually we called them and they said that they had a party on Saturday night and it finished late so they would not open until 18:00.Having tables booked, I think this is very unprofessional and rude. They are also very unreliable, the other group of people told us they had similar problems in the past.

I have just got back home after a visit with my husband to the Jolly Farmers, I purchased a Groupon Voucher for a fish and chip lunch plus a pint of beer or a glass of wine, what a fantastic plate of food we had it was absolutely brilliant, we had a choice of peas or salad as we have a lot of salad at home we opted for the peas, it may sound silly but along with the fish and chips the peas were fantastic, usually in most places the peas are cooked to death and all the colour gone not with these wel done JOLLY FARMERS

Very tasty Sunday Roast with nice fresh vegetables and home made roast potatoes. I am a vegetarian, so went for the Tomato Soup to start and the stuffed Butternut Squash as main. The squash was very tasty and very filling. The veg was refreshed several times while we were eating, despite the fact that the pub was not very busy. Veg was very fresh, and not the least bit soggy, as can so often be the case with carvery-style food. Vegetarian gravy was provided without us having to ask. You won't leave hungry!Unfortunately, it seems they were running low on tomato soup, as the soup we were served was Heinz Cream of Tomato and not "Fresh British Tomato Soup infused with Basil" as was advertised on the menu. The bread served with it was very nice, however, and we didn't complain as we fortunately both like Heinz Tomato Soup. Will definitely return next time we're in Oxford on a Sunday. Staff very friendly and the interior of the place is nicely decorated. Food was excellent value - £4ish for starters, £7-8 for mains and £4ish for Desserts.Compliments to the chef!

I have been on a bit of a hunt looking for a reasonably priced but good Sunday roast to recommend to guests staying at my Guest house..... Well I think I've found it! I went to JF yesterday, had a 2 course Sunday roast for £6.99..... I chose the home made tomato soup which was lovely, and the roast beef, I would rather have my beef a little more rare, however despite this it was tender and tasty, vegetables were nicely cooked (home made roast potatoes) and delicious gravy.... I didn't have dessert, but did see others eating dessert and they looked great all for £6.99 (similar price as a large big mac and drink!!) lovely staff and service..... Will absolutely be back and would certainly recommend.

Have now been to The Jolly Farmes about 5/6 times, and once again had a great meal. The waitress recognises us now and is always welcoming and great with my young son. Tomato Soup this time, which was simply wonderful. I had the roast beef and my wife had the Turkey. Meat is cooked to perfection and complimented by great choice of veggies. The best cauliflower cheese I have ever tasted. Was a little rainy, but the garden has covers adheaters so we still sat outside for a lovely fresh coffee after our meal. Good job this place is not closer as I dont think my wife would ever cook a Sunday Lunch again!
