Had an amazing burger, possibly the best I've ever had. Great service and excellent food. My stepson and I left feeling extremely full and both agreed that the food was very tasty.

I would like to start by saying we have visited before and both the food and service were outstanding. However this was not the case on this visit. We had a table of 8 and granted that is on the large size but we were put into a room all on our own which looked like a storage area. To make things worse it was absolutely freezing! There were a number of usual pub drinks unavailable including things on tap, bottles and spirits. They completely ran out of alcohol free beer/ cider. The food took an age to arrive and we only ate an hour after we arrived. For desserts we were initially told the mere was no chocolate soufflé, then after ordering we’re told the pannacotta had not set but we could now get soufflé?! Mixed messaging. The roast food was brilliant but we asked for ‘extra gravy’ and got 4 small jugs for the 8 of us ….. not sure how this was ‘extra’. Whilst the food was good, lots of things missing that were promised on the menu e.g bread sauce and pork cracking…. Why list this if it is unavailable?! Unfortunately unlikely to return now.

What could have been a fairly enjoyable meal was completely overshadowed by service at a snails pace. Food was ok but not worth the price and not at ALL worth the wait. Restaurant was half full and there was no acknowledgement from staff at any point during the three hours we spent there. Even the bill took forever to arrive, we had to go and ask for it in the end. Considered asking to wave the service charge but couldn’t bear the thought of getting stuck there even longer having to explain ourselves.

What a fabulous place! I came here with my husband & Father-in-law for Sunday lunch last weekend. The interior is classic country pub style – not gussied up, just beautiful brickwork, stripped wooden beams, traditional open fire and some quirky artwork to give everything a current edge. My 2 gents were really looking forward to their roast beef. I don't eat meat, the vegetarian pasta option didn't sound hugely exciting (my mistake!), but I ordered it anyway. Hmmm, quite possibly the most delicious pasta I have ever had! Absolutely mouthwatering sauce, beautiful colours and perfectly al dente. The roasts came with the most perfect looking Yorkshire puddings and a generous array of veggies, we were all very happy with our meals. The busy restaurant ran out of horseradish sauce during the meal, but unlike most places which would just offered an apologetic shrug.... the chef went outside, dug up some horseradish root from the garden and made fresh horseradish sauce on the spot! That, good people, is dedication to your craft! On top of attractive surroundings and perfect food - i'd also like to give a big shout out to both the girls who were serving us... they just had such a lovely energy, warm and friendly, super helpful, ultimately making the service as exceptional as the food. Needless to say… We will be back!

Very good meal fitted us in despite not booking. We had lobster and crab along with a Sunday roast all where extremely well done however the star was the veg. OK! Booked a table few days before Sunday Lunch, explained we had a dog. No problem they said. On entry kind of felt unwelcome especially when they met the dog, he’s large but friendly. They said we would be in the bar area, which was fine but hurriedly made space and laid the table. Taking into consideration I had advised that we were bringing our dog and rather expected a table would be made up already. Ordered in anticipation of delicious Sunday lunch, Roast Chicken dinner. The chicken looked pale and skin was soft and slippery. There were 3 separate pieces of Chicken, 1/4 of chicken breast, one pale anaemic leg and one boney thigh. Plenty of vegetables though unfortunately the parsnips and carrots were rubbery, the medley of greens squeaked as I cut them up. The roast potatoes were good I’ll give them that. Actually our dog enjoyed the chicken I felt very dissatisfied and advised the chicken was tough and not very appetising as they cleared the plates away. She apologised and said she would tell them. They came over with dessert menu, but decided against it. We go by this pub quite regularly and friends had recommended the food especially. Perhaps another day might be different, but the general ambience was not convivial to us or our dog so I think they should think on greeting people and making you feel welcome and improving the quality of the food for a Sunday. Our first visit and unfortunately our last. Also my husband is disabled and could see no disabled parking.

Our 21st wedding anniversary meal .We were not disappointed, lovely welcome and shown straight to our seats. Menu looked mouth watering, we chose the fresh Calamari, as we'd enjoyed eating fresh Calamari on our honeymoon in Turkey. It was sublime, the best we've had in 21 years. Served with a fresh garlic mayonnaise and a charred juicy lemon slice. Our main was Dawlish dressed crab and 40 day dry aged Sirloin steak with chips cooked in Duck fat. They even had gluten-free bread for me. The main courses were amazing. Leaving us rather full and unable to squeeze a dessert in Thoroughly recommend. Service was excellent, plenty of parking,

If like me, the people you dine with have varying tastes, The Canal Inn is the perfect place yo visit. Whilst it is a seafood restaurant, their steaks are also very special. You can even see them age drying within the restaurant. When you visit here, you are immersed into a whole dining experience. The decor and environment is great, wonderful log burners and very well thought out. The service is impeccable and the owners and staff team are very knowledgeable about the menu. The food itself is quite simply out of this world, excellently prepared, cooked and presented and a real delight. The menu also provides opportunity to experience and taste great food that is not available to this standard elsewhere. On mu visit I enjoyed fresh oysters, followed by half a lobster accompanied with parmesan and truffle fries, finished off with a lemon posset. Everything was absolutely faultless. It was not over complicated and all flavours complimented each other perfectly. The food is certainly Michelin star worthy, and I would be surprised if this is not achieved at some point.

The food was beautifully presented, my husbands dressed crab was fridge cold and my ravioli didn’t have a sauce so was very dry to eat . Only 8 other people came in the restaurant so think this sums up for me on a Friday night that the food is expensive , watch out for the 10% surcharge !

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We booked a table for 3 and were smilingly accommodated when we turned up with two extra guests by the very pleasant Rachael behind the bar. First impressions of the pub were excellent. I hadn’t been keen on trying it here, I’d heard good reports about the food but the name (a rather lame play on words) had always put me off. The interior is clean and pleasantly appointed with lots of interesting and attractive artwork on the walls. Quite a lot of this artwork refers to Simon (who we later learned is the landlord) and is only really relevant if you happen to know the man but, no matter, this didn’t really detract from the generally pleasant ambiance. Our table was near the front door which was propped open. It wasn’t the balmiest of evenings and we were not overly warm. We didn’t like to ask to have the door closed as we assumed that this was to do with the COVID rules. Drinks were ordered and menus given. We were a little surprised that staff do a rather odd limbo-like dance as they deliver items to the table whilst leaning as far as they possibly can away from their clients. It does rather make one feel like a pariah. I work in a customer facing business. I wear a mask. So I don’t feel I have to lean away from my customers. Maybe this might work better? At no point were any of us asked to provide our contact details for track and trace which surprised us all. We each ordered our meals and these were delivered promptly. All of the dishes were nicely presented. The chowder was tasty, as was the baked Camembert but my prawn cocktail wasn’t particularly inspiring. Next came our main courses. The two ribeye steaks didn’t look or taste like ribeye but more like sirloin. Also they were both more thoroughly cooked than had been requested. These were sent back along with a request for fresh ones. My mussels were not good. The sauce was tasty but many of them were shut or smashed. One or two were rather gritty. All were small and not fleshy or tasty. I only ate around a quarter of them. I had been provided with a natty little tabletop dustbin for the shells so it was obvious that most of my dish had remained uneaten. I expected the chef to ask why my dish had been sent back mostly untouched. No enquiry from the kitchen was forthcoming. The replacement steaks were a vast improvement on the originals so my friends were happy enough with that. The accompanying fat chips were delicious. I pinched some to make up for the mussels. I was still hungry so persuaded my fellow diners to share a cheese plate with me. One member of our party ordered a cappuccino. The cheese was ok but nothing special. The coffee was of the push button variety that you can get at most garages. I have an espresso machine in my kitchen. Ordinary people are now able to produce lovely, authentic coffee in their own homes. There is no excuse for ANY establishment to serve naff cappuccino. Especially not at nearly three quid a throw. Next came the bill..........confusingly we were provided with two lengths of till roll with random numbers on them and a total of £235. I was somewhat taken aback as this was quite a lot more than I had thought it ought to be. I went to the bar and asked for an itemised bill. Rachael apologised and said this wasn’t possible but she could let me know what each figure was for. It turned out that one of the bills wasn’t ours but the other one and total of £235 was correct. There were a few surprises lurking in the bill.........it turns out that the four vodka tonics that we had shared were £16.85 EACH. That’s a total of £64.40! I asked to speak to the landlord. I explained that I felt that our bill was somewhat excessive for the calibre of the food that we had received. He answered that the vodka was a premium brand. I explained that I knew this as I have been a drinking Grey Goose and tonic for many years in various (expensive) cities around the world but hadn’t expected London prices in downtown Wrantage! I also told him that my meal has been poor and that this was why my meal has been returned to the kitchen mostly uneaten and that I was surprised that he (as chef) hadn’t enquired as to why. He said that he had never had a complaint about his mussels before and walked out as I was trying to talk to him. Leaving his young and inexperienced staff to deal with this situation. So we had no option other than to pay the bill and leave. All in all, in fairness, we had had a very pleasant evening. The place is nice, Rachael the bar person is nice. But the food isn’t earth shatteringly fabulous. But it’s not crazy expensive so I would say it’s mostly acceptable at this price. It was just a pity that the landlord didn’t feel able to stay and discuss the issues and come to a mutually satisfactory conclusion. I would like to have added this place to the list of local eateries I frequent on a regular basis. Good luck If you do decide to try it. Some of the food is very nice. Some of it is good value for money. But be careful you don’t get stung by the hidden drinks prices.

My husband, parents and I visited this pub for dinner on Monday 3rd August after it had been recommended to us by the owners of the cottage we were staying at. I rung beforehand and explained we had been shielding so ideally would like a table under a shelter but not inside. This was not a problem as they had erected and decorated a large marquee in the beer garden and explained their Coronavirus procedures which made us feel safe. For starters mum and I had the fish chowder and my dad and hubbie had the pate. For mains mum and I had the lamb, dad had the pie and hubbie the steak. Desserts were the brownie and tart. All our food was delicious, very tasty and home cooked. The portions were large and very good value for money, especially with the £10 per person off eat out to help out offer! Sadly we were only visiting the area, but if we lived closer we would not hesitate to return on a regular basis. It's a tough time for local businesses at the moment so glad we could support a good local pub.

Had a fantastic meal this evening 1st August. Food was amazing as always. For safety the Far Canal covid19 set up is really well thought out, felt very comfortable and safe, staff were excellent on how they now deal with service to the table. There are plenty of sanitise stations for general public. Indoor and outdoor seating arrangements are set very well for social distancing. Markings on the floor are very clear and easy to follow whilst making your way around the pub. Can't recommend enough. We shall certainly pay another visit in the near future.

Had a lovely meal, excellent well-cooked food from a good menu and a very good selection of drinks (and the most extensive choice of gins for miles around!). COVID-19 precautions were first class, yet still managed to provide a welcoming ambiance. Excellent marquee outside for al fresco dining. Highly recommended.

What an absolutely beautiful Sunday lunch, the food was perfect. We had the beef which you carved yourself, lovely touch, the meat was so tender and tasted amazing. Beautiful selection of vegetable and potatoes. Our son had the lamb which he loved followed by chocolate brownie. Next time we are down this neck of the woods we will defiantly be back! Thank you to all the staff so friendly and welcoming!

Just had a lovely meal with some friends at the Far Canal. Credit where credit is due, Simon has gone beyond the call to make the dining experience as safe as possible for everyone. The quality of the food is as good as its always been. If you are having concerns about dining out during these strange times, I recommend a visit to the Far Canal to get your confidence back. Well done Simon and the team.

Fantastic night . Felt 100% safe from walking through the door. Touch free sanitiser on entering to separated tables from other diners . Fabulous tasty food ( triple cooked chips best in area ) .. Whole night was a trouble free , relaxing night in a safe and exceptionally clean restaurant. Definitely one to visit if your worried about eating out . This place has gone overboard to make sure everyone is safe while having a good night . Well done Simon and Hannah on making our night so lovely .. Definitely 5 star treatment and food was best in Somerset xxx

My partner and I were having our first date night since our daughter was born. We decided to head here as this hidden gem is by far our favourite place to come and we have missed it since it's been shut. On arrival to the pub it was clear to see how much effort has gone into making sure it followed the guild lines. Hand sanitizer provided upon entrance and although screens have been placed up at the bar you still get the same warm welcome you had before. The pub felt as welcoming as it did before covid and not once did we feel unsafe as we sat and enjoyed out evening. Visit this pub and I promise you won't regret it

We’ve been apprehensive to return to pubs since then lockdown took place, but couldn’t have been more impressed with the service, food and provisions put in place. Super safe and secure feeling to the pub, but it hasn’t lose the quirky atmosphere!

As a couple who live locally to the pub it has been an absolute pleasure to have it open again this July. We have visited and noted the thoughtfulness that has been put into ensuring that customers feel safe at this time. Having been a bit unsure before visiting for the first time since "lockdown" we will not hesitate to return. The service remains as excellent as always, as does the food!

We were looking around on TripAdvisor last night for a pub to visit as we were a bit nervous of going in town, and happened to stumble across The Far Canal. We saw the videos of what precautions they had taken and were very impressed. Can't wait to return, a lovely pub, friendly staff and although we only had a sandwich it was great. They couldn't have done more to keep people safe. I wish them all the best..and look forward to dinner next time :)

During the lockdown, my son in law told me that Simon was doing take out kebabs and offered to pick up a couple for hubby and I. I prepared for the normal spillage down my front. Well when it came as a wrap I thought what a brilliant idea. Everything was balanced, the right quantity of all ingredients all in a perfect package with nothing pouring out, all accompanied by the best fries I have had in years. Well done Simon, I have already told Matt I’m up for the Chinese next week.

This place I’d great for a hearty flavoured gorgeous Sunday roast. Served on a platter so you carve yourselves. As a family we all chose a varied meat selection as we were 11 and this meant we had a fabulous choice we could all try. The staff were so friendly and brought as much veg roast potatoes and gravy as we wanted. I don’t normally enjoy a roast dinner out as I feel mines the best ! But in this case I’m more than happy to visit the far canal for Sunday roast. Also they make the best home made horseradish sauce you can buy !

We visited The Far Canal for a family roast, asked on the phone if it was a carvery. When we saw food from other tables we were a little surprised it was a ‘tabletop carvery’, not quite what we were expecting, nevertheless we ordered and looked forward to our food. We were one of the last people to be served and were a little disappointed that the food wasn’t overly warm but didn’t want to make a fuss. The meat was lovely and the gravy was incredible. Although the rest of the meal let it down, the veg was average and I found sweet corn with a roast bizarre at a restaurant. The roast potatoes were disappointing, not crispy or fluffy inside, and only 3 tiny roast potatoes per person was not enough. The Yorkshire puddings were nice but on the small side. Overall it was enjoyable enough but certainly not worth the £16.95 per meal. Elements of the meal were lovely, but it was massively let down by the veg and potatoes particularly. We had desert and that was really nice, quality and homemade. Overall a mixed bag but won’t be returning again for a roast.

Not sure where the half star went because we had a 5 star experience. Our visit was for Sunday lunch and everything was great. We ate beef, lamb and chicken between four and the veg’ was plentiful, fresh and varied. Good gravy too. Service and the welcome was excellent in a quirky and interesting interior with a great buzz. This is well out of our way normally but the pub knows how to make lunch special. If you don’t go, you’re missing out.

Found this little gem while on way to Devon to see family. They do a wide range of food which is exceptional and on next trip down will try the table top roast. Old traditional pub with old beams, open fires and they stock over hundred different gins. Would recommend stopping here for lunch or dinner.

The food was excellent, there were 6 of us so we tried a good variety of starters and mains between us, our only regret was that we were too full to sample the deserts so will definitely have to come back. The service was friendly and efficient, the decor interesting and well thought out and we had a great time.

Thank you Simon for a lovely lunch today. Left a little on the late side to phone and book, but our son arrived out of the blue with grandchildren and suggested we go to lunch. I phoned Simon and asked for a table for 10. He said no problem, and we had a lovely lunch right beside a roaring fire. We couldn't have asked for more, service was brilliant and food was excellent. Managed to book a table here last minute. I can not eat wheat and one of the other diners is pescatarian. There was a fabulous choice of food we could eat. I had delicious garlic mushrooms in a creamy sauce with gf bread followed by fish and chips with peas. One of the others had the same dish but not gluten free and both were delicious. It was interesting that our batter looked different as did the chips proving they were done in different fryers and made separately which is very reassuring if you have an allergy. Easy to park as well and friendly landlord and staff. Have already recommended it to others as the food was very good.
