Was a little reluctant to go here, but when I saw the amount of business being, it had to ve good. I had Crispy Lemon chicken with fried rice. Absolutely delicious. Enough for 2 meals, and only £7.30. Highly recommend and will definitely be back this week.

Why some terrible reviews? Here in our motorhome and had a fabulous takeaway again, we were here in 2021 and it was as good as I remember, open kitchen so you can see your food being cooked, it was so good we had a takeaway two nights running.

We read the reviews and pondered whether we should get a meal here. So glad we did. Yes, the service is ‘perfunctory’ but the meal was so tasty and excellent value for money. Our food was cooked in really good time and a bag of complimentary prawn crackers included. My Malaysian prawn curry was delicious and the rice was perfectly cooked. My partner had the Cantonese sweet and sour chicken and enjoyed it very much. He had chips which weren’t the best but that’s the only criticism we would have. It’s nice to support local eateries as we travel around on our motorhome and this was one I would not hesitate to recommend.

Tried the Beef with Bamboo Shoots and Cashew Nuts, number 71, with boiled rice. Also picked Stir Fried Mixed Vegetables from their Extra Dishes list. To be honest, 71 is a bit boring and bland. Nothing was wrong with it, and with the Extra Dishes order it fed two people very well. Next time I’ll go back to an old favourite instead, 15c, 27, 79, 92 and the Chef’s Special of Salt & Chilli Squid are all great. Johnny's Chef is very well located, a few meters from the (1877 / 1890) train station, or a little more to the free park-and-ride car park. There’s a bus stop there, as well. Next door to Johnny's Chef is a brand-new JandRs Pizzeria. New inside the train station is the Offline Gallery, with a show of paintings and sculptures.

I cannot contest to the quality of the food but this guy is so so rude, cash only fyi. They don't have this advertised anywhere nor do they tell you when you phone in. So when I arrived there was no hello or any kind of customer service or etiquette. He just said cash only cash. I said OK I don't have any cash he says not my problem. I was like ok and left. Wow just wow. Please use the other Chinese in whitehead yanau or something it's called, where the young man speaks English says hello and thank you and they too only take cash BUT it is plastered all over the restaurant, a massive sign before you go in and subsequently everywhere upon entry. Johnny chef can go F himself.

During the pandemic lock down we were very glad to be able to call for a take away meal. I had a share of an order of no. 79, pork Szechuan style, for £6.30, with boiled rice, plus an extra dish of stir-fried mixed vegetables for £3.20. That combination feeds two of us. I really liked the pork, green pepper, broccoli, the sauce, the bean sprouts, and carrot slices. It’s a great combination, with flecks of chillies in the mix. It was an excellent meal, very tasty. Johnny's Chef is very well located, a few meters from the (1877 / 1890) train station, or a little more to the free park-and-ride car park.

Very good Chinese takeaway. Recommend the salt and chilli prawns (or squid) with fresh chillis and both the beef (no fat or gristle) or chicken (breast meat) Malaysian curries. These are proper curries not bland “curry sauce” versions. Always freshly cooked and consistent. A treat once a week and good sized portions. IMHO best one for miles.

This is our local Chinese take away place, and we are never disappointed with the service and quality of food. I would recommend the salt and chilli chicken or the chicken with green pepper and a black pepper sauce. Always tastes fresh, and great value for money.

I was feeling wick. Just back from a hospital, dark rainy night in January, alone off the train. There’s Johnie’s Chef, a light in the darkness. I go in, and get myself some salted chilli squid. Back home I feast upon this marvellous meal. It was a tonic. Just the ticket. Even the smell of it around the house afterwards was great. Do yourself a favour – skip the cooking, grab yourself a bag of joy from Johnie’s Chef.

Would have returned the meal I got from Johnnys Chef tonight if I didn’t live 7 miles away. Fried rice was stuck together and gloopy, prawn crackers were like rubber and chips were nasty. Was like eating yesterday’s takeaway. Definitely not up to its usual standard.

Had a much better meal from here this time. Ordered a number 79, plus, from their "Extra Dishes" list, the Stir Fried Mixed Vegetables (that turned out to be far more varied and tasty compared to their Stir Fried Seasonal Greens, which can seem to be mostly broccoli). £6.30 plus £3.20 came in under a tenner, and fed two people very well. A good meal. I'll be back.

I reviewed in November 2017 saying I hoped I'd just been unlucky with 2 takeaway meals....not so. Working hard all day in house and shattered so decided to get takeaway. Should have gone anywhere but here. Initially ordered sweet and sour chicken checking first the difference between the two types. One had chilli apparently so I decided on the other as was sharing meal and knew other person wouldn't like the chili. Then I saw the meal for one - couple extra pounds but with starter and prawn crackers so went for that. When I arrived home I had been given the one with chili! It really didn't matter, the chicken was so hard that chili or not, it was inedible. I can't have been that unlucky twice!

Ordered a special chop suey. There was no trace of any beef or chicken in it, which was surprising. Often those "special" versions of dishes have a variety of different meats thrown in. Our meal had the char sui pork, some king prawns, and some of those squares which look like they're cut from sheets of processed ham. Along with a side order of seasonal greens it made for a big pile of hot food that was under £12, which is good. The prawn crackers were great. I do like other dishes from their menu, this one I'll not order again.

I picked their salted chilli squid. Its always great, and you get so much of it. I added chips and stir fried seasonal greens, and a big bag of prawn crackers was added for free. It all made for a fabulous feast. Highly recommended. Big crowds were in collecting their orders; this place is popular and successful. There's a big, free park-and-ride across the road.

early friday evening, long hard day, couldn't be bothered going out or cooking so thought Chinese takeaway good option. i bought chicken curry balls and fried rice and a king prawn and fried rice dish. the king prawn dish was dire - overcooked so huge prawns which looked lovely were hard and rubbery. chicken balls edible but more ball than chicken. years ago i went here and it was good so perhaps i was just unlucky. should have gone back following day with uneaten dishes but couldnt be bothered.

After getting the same order twice within few weeks, we rang back up today (no fault to the girl behind the desk as it was her 1st day on the job) to be told the meal we usually get is 6 pound dearer, both the chef counter assistant didn't know what meal we were talking about!! Resulted in them taking our number, told us they would ring the other counter assistant who would maybe know and ring us back. We have now waited half an hour with no call back, and when we decide to ring up they ignored the call! Safe to say we will not be back! Place always has faults! Sort it out!

Not a bad Chinese takeaway. When you call your order through in advance the vast majority of the time you only wait 2-3mins as they're preparing the final dish. And it's interesting to watch as the kitchen is right there next to the counter.

We ordered from their "Chefs Recommendation" list, number seventeen, Fillet Pork with ginger & Spring Onion in Oyster Sauce. Plus boiled rice. For £9.10 we found the meal was easily able to feed both of us. The pork was great, the meal tasty. They close Tuesdays. Open Sun, Mon, Wed, Thurs 4.30 - 11.30pm. Fri & Sat 4.30 to midnight. Right beside the train station. They have a new takeaway menu.

Everytime I decide to get something from here, the order is never correct. It's the only Chinese that I've ever experienced this with. The food isn't even that great. Was lovely when it first opened years ago. Decided to try again tonight. Ordered a small gravy chip with peas and onions. And two vegetable spring rolls. Awful!! Chips were dry and some were hard. Hadley any gravy. No peas and no onions. And my spring rolls were packed full of chicken and I think the other neat was pork and ham. Not impressed! Will not be wasting my money here ever again.

December 29th, at night, we collected one of their duck dishes and a chili chicken one. We were all avoiding eating more Christmas turkey! Their portions are very generous, so we split the two dishes between the 3 of us. (The photo could be confusing; it shows just 35% from the duck helping, plus 10% from the chicken dish, maybe.) You get a big bag of free prawn crackers with order over 10 pounds. Specifically we chose the stir fried shredded duck with mixed vegetables, and the crispy chicken with garlic and chili sauce. The batter was not too crispy, but we did like the food.Bags of free parking over the road, or a couple of spaces outside. (Irrelevant, but amusing: the menu spells it "Johnnie," the sign on the building says "Johnie," while a printed notice on the wall inside said "Jhonnie".)

A day of running about in rainy December weather, so we just wanna be lazy and get fast, hot fooood. One place won't answer the phone, while Whitehead's fabulous new Pizza Gourmet is closed on Mondays. Dang! Thank goodness for Johnnie's Chef, they're a beacon of openness on a midwinter Monday night. We phoned up for a Special Chop Suey plus a side order of their Stir Fried Seasonal Greens in Oyster Sauce. This came to just £10.90, so we qualified for a free helping of their Prawn Crackers - they usually cost £2.All this, by the way, was very sufficient to feed two people (see photos). When you've been out working in the winter weather their fast, hot wet food is very, very welcome. Recommended.Ideally situated: they're right beside the train station. I was able to park at the door tonight. If other vehicles happen to be there, the entire "park and ride" free railway station car park is just a few yards away.

Got myself a meal from their “Chef’s special dishes” list, the Salt and Chilli Squid (hence the daft review title). Very good. Huge portions. If you do a bigger order (over ten pounds, I think) you get free prawn crackers. You get a big helping of those, also. They have a delivery service, but I always drive to fetch my order. Johnnie’s Chef is in a commanding spot in Whitehead, right beside the grand old (opened 1877, from John Lanyon’s designs) railway station. There’s a big park-and-ride car park for train commuters whose entrance is across the big loop of a bus halt. Cars can also park outside Johnnie’s Chef, and circle back using that bus stop. They open from half past four to 11pm all week, and until midnight at weekends.
