Johnny Mac's Fish & Chips in Colchester

I had lunch here and really enjoyed the fish and chips. The service was brilliant and I would have no hesitation in returning for anoth meal.

Another lovely dinner at Jonny Mac’s. Little one loves the fishes he has in his tank so we go as much as we can. Today Jonny gave us all a free ice cream! Such a nice guy. Always a nice meal great prices and lovely place to eat.

Located in small shopping area just off the A133 on the outskirts of Colchester lies Johnny Mac's of Colchester. A Fish shop and restaurant with the highest of food standards and a service to match. The fish and Chip I had was perfect all seved with a parsley sauce and Curry sauce as a side, along with a garnish of salad a a lemon ready to squeeze over the fish.. A soft ice cream was served after to simply clean the pallette All in all the perfect place to grab a take away or dine in. 5 stars from me!

Absolutely lovely brilliant staff came in with the missus and baby and the staff brought over a free ice baby loved it highly recommend

Absolutely amazing food. I have to say my eyes are bigger than my stomach haha. Absolutely loved the cheesy chips and I must say that it really was “cheesy”. Tried Halloumi for the first time from them today and I absolutely loved it. Definitely recommend!

Our team just ordered a takeaway from Johnny Mac's for the first time and lets just say it won't be the last! I can safely say that was the best fish and chips I've ever had! Will defo be back again (and again).

Wow, absolutely stuffed but cannot recommend this place enough. From the second I walked in, everything was superb. The member of staff helped me with my big office order! The whole team loved it! The curry sauce is immense!

The food was tasty and the service was also good. Just loved the hot chilli sauce they provided. Perfect for someone who wants it spicy. They also gave one scoop of ice cream complimentary.

Excellent manager. Infallible food. Nice clean atmosphere. The curry sauce here is absolutely impeccable. It destroys all other competitors. If you like chips + curry sauce it’s worth the extra 5-10 mins travel to taste this celestial, elegant and other wordly sauce conjured by only true acumen of a passionate craftsmen. 9.5/10

This is the best fish and chip takeaway place I have ever been too! The workers were so lovely and accommodating, they really made me feel welcomed there! My meal came to just over £6 which I found incredibly cheap, especially with the cost of living crisis. I had a large battered sausage, chips and curry sauce. The chips were freshly cooked and perfectly crispy on the outside while remaining soft in the middle. The battered sausage had the perfect ratio of batter - sausage and the curry sauce was smooth and very flavoursome! If you have the chance, please pay this place a visit!

The best fish & chips I’ve tasted. Light batter, crispy, not too oily, fresh fish, generous portion & excellent customer service. Thank you for the ice cream too. We hope to dine here again on our next trip to Colchester. All the best!

I rarely write reviews. First visit to Johnny Mac's. Brilliant customer service by the Gent that greeted me. (Apologies I didn't get your name!) He took his time to explain what we could have Gluten Free which was quite extensive for a change. I was even shown the pot of ingredients they use to put my mind at ease. As it was Halloween, he was handing out free Ice-cream to the kids, but he didn't leave me out, I left with some too! Thank ~ you!

First time trying this chippy as we were nearby. Very pleased to find one open on a Sunday evening so that was already a positive. Service was great, prices acceptable and the food was lovely. Fish seemed very fresh and was extremely tasty.

Moved down from London few years back and tried a few chippy’s round here in Colchester and this is the best one hands down . Always fresh and a proper bit of cod and polite people . Lovely chippy

Was going to order & have it delivered but noticed they charge more per item & then charge for delivery. Not having that thanks! So went down to order to take away with my parents tho could have eaten there as seating is available. When got home 10 mins later, the fish & chips were still hot & delicious. The chips & batter on the fish were light & crispy. Definitely be back.

EN It's a fantastic place. The fish was fresh and tasty, as were the potatoes. The service was impeccable, in fact everyone was very helpful. We had a great time. I would go back any time. Speechless.... First time eating here using JustEat and I ordered a large cod and a few other sides but missed the chips by mistake. Well these guys made my evening by seeing my order and adding chips without me even asking!! This is the kind of service you just don't see anymore. Food is stunning and you have just gained a new regular. Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you all!!!!

Always friendly and without doubt the best in Colchester

Probably the best fish and chip's that I've ever had. The chip's were the right side of crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. I've visited twice in two weeks and it's now my favourite place to eat. I've had the rock eel which was boned and cooked to perfection and the second time we had the haddock and once again it was perfect. I'm also a tea drinker and must say for me the tea was really good, served in a pot and finished off the meal a treat. The staff are very friendly and the restaurant is very clean with a friendly atmosphere.

Visited Colchester at the weekend and wanted gluten free fish and chips. Came across Johnny Mac's and what a great find. Excellent fish and chips and will visit again. Also ordered a regular fish and chips which I am told was also very good.

My local chippy, i ordered the budget cod and chips, i asked for the fish to be grilled, they put butter and pepper on it, it was delicious 😋 Chips were also yummy. Would recommend 👍

I have always treated my mum to fish and chips from here for years. Crispy battered fresh fish and ample chips. Its one of the only places that also offers vegetarians like me a good choice as well. Always freshly cooked good size portions and cleanliness is of the highest standard. A gem of a place as it even offers proper dairy ice cream from its ice cream parlour. You can eat in (usually) or take out and order ahead. Service is always friendly and efficient and the menu has healthy options, all reasonably priced. Also easy parking.

Probably one of the consistently best veggie burgers I’ve ever had in colchester. Just look at that photo. Tastes even better than it looks.

Really nice friendly staff and touching on another comment on him being racist I find is ridiculous....as a mother of mixed race kids he's been friendly polite and gave my kids ice creams never said anything derogatory or snidey.

Food was good but owner was racist to my friend. Called him "Jackie Chan" on 3 separate occasions (he's Indonesian). I was slightly taken aback the first time. The second and third times were just damn right rude.I'm sure he was just joking, but ignorance can't be used as an excuse. It's not the first time when his chirpy nature has been seen as abit too much. I gave him the benefit of the doubt then, but this is too far.Wont be ordering from there again.

I've never tried a Johnny Mac's before, and this was just a simple portion of chips, but I was very impressed with the premises. There is a large area for customers to dine and the area is very modern and clean. The kitchen area too looked clean and organised. I didn't manage to get anyone to crack a smile, but they were efficient nonetheless.

You can have any thing you want fish can be done without batter Very friendly staff and very clean nothing is a problem for them

As always Jon and the team got it right again been to all his chip shops and can’t fault any of them that he & his team has worked in even better now he is here in Colchester keep up the good work 😊
