First time here on a Saturday night. Great service. Food menu is small but a nice selection. The pie of the day was lovely (Steak and Ale) and the pudding selection was great. The price for the food quality was very good and not that expensive. Well Done Mr O’Gaunt 👍👍👍👍👍👍 4 out 5 🥧🥧🥧🥧

If you want to go at weekends, and want to sit inside, it is best to book in advance. This was some of the best pub food I have eaten The atmosphere was great. The pub was clean and welcoming and the pricing was reasonable. I highly recommend.

This place is absolutely phenomenal. I went with my sister, her husband who's birthday it was and my nephew and his girlfriend. The food was totally amazing, classic dishes but totally enhanced and cooked with complete and utter love. The staff are fantastic, as are the owners. The chef here, is a very talented man, the food is absolutely 10/10 as is the service. I will be returning for my own birthday towards the end of the year.

Been meaning to try here for a few years and finally got round to it. All I can say is……………why did I wait so long!! Unbelievably classy establishment. Laid back but with class. The service is spot on. All the staff are smiling and friendly to make sure you have a smooth service and to enjoy your meal. None of this pretentious is everything ok …..because they know what comes out of the kitchen is exactly how it should be. For that I am grateful. The food served is top notch…..no complaints on that score from me. Enjoyed every morsel of it. We will be back!!!!

Not regulars here although I live locally. Enjoyed good meals on previous visit. Unable to see menu beforehand, we took our time to peruse the menu and special board. I was particularly excited that whole sea bass was a special at £19. Drinks and food ordered we enjoyed a chat with our friends over a drink. Starters arrived. My wife and I shared the Camembert, it was large at £13. We also had 2 parfait at £11 each. Mains were 2 Asparagus tarts £16, pie of the day £16.00 and the sea bass £19.00. All arrived in good time except the sea bass which required another 5 minutes. (It only needs 5) When it did arrive it was black. Not to cause a fuss (my wife’s policy) I ate it but I could barely taste the fish. The accompanying grilled vegetables were nice. When the waitress cleared the plates I asked her if all the fish is grilled to this extent here and she replied Yes. Pity that dish spoilt the evening for me.

The decor is nice, the food was tasty, well presented, nice enough. Maybe a bit pricey. But unbelievably limited options for GF. Especially in 2023! We had told the pub on booking one of our number was GF - so it was not a surprise/unexpected drop in. They didn't seem to care. Particularly as the menu a) has a huge "bread" bias...brioche here, toast there, burger buns and soda bread elsewhere and b) is not easily available online. When there we asked what was suitable for a GF diet...there was such a limited choice unless you wanted mussels/baked Camembert/pate/soup with nothing to have with it. Surely in this day and age it is not beyond the wit of man/restaurant to have a GF bread available? Especially is 80% of your dishes contain bread! When asked, the response was rude and defensive. "We bake our own bread so don't have any alternatives". Service both before and after that point was OK...but no warmth or welcome felt. And I felt appalled on my GF friend's behalf. I am not sure I would bother returning, despite the reasonably tasty food.

We have been coming to the John O’Gaunt in Sutton for some time now and have followed Jane from The Hare and Hounds their previous venue. Always a great welcome from Jane and you are immediately struck by the welcoming atmosphere and the lovely way the pub/restaurant is presented………make’s you feel welcome somehow. The food is great too……..I like to be presented with a small but enticing menu to choose from and you just know it will be well cooked and well presented which it is. My tip……have a bowel of olives and a glass of wine or beer and then look at the menu to decide. We had king prawns and spiced cauliflower fritters to start and as mains……pie of the day and mushroom burger…..both with wonderful chip cooked in dripping. I thought Jane ran a great restaurant at the Hare and Hounds and I think she does exactly the same at the John O’Gaunt and would thoroughly recommend you visit. We are discerning clients and not easily swayed.

A very disappointing Sunday lunch, very few vegetables - a couple of spoons of cabbage, one very small piece of broccoli. Seemed to want to fill us up with mashed potatoes, 2 roast potatoes and large Yorkshire pudding. Two skinny pieces of beef. Not up to their pre-Covid standard and expensive for what it was at £20. Used to be superb food … not any more.

Staff - wonderful and smiley Decor - is just lovely Food - very, very good. Lots of clever little touches - highly recommend the chick liver with comes with this amazing little blob of puree curried dahl with totally lights the dish. Beef had a little dumpling lid and my son said his burger, which comes with shredded lettuce and a fab sauce, was the best ever. Oh yes and everything is beautifully season with salt and pepper. Visited with a small group of friends, two of whom had suggested eating there. I had seen from their online menu that there were few choices for vegetarians, but there was a pasta dish with asparagus that sounded reasonable. However, this was not on the menu on the evening we visited and if there were any specials, there were no vegetarian ones. I was left with either butternut squash curry or macaroni and cauliflower cheese. I opted for the latter, but I'm sorry to say it was totally uninspiring - not particularly tasty and not particularly well cooked and with no nice crispy top. The cauliflower was served in a dish on the side, and was similarly uninspiring. This might not have been so bad had it not been so expensive - the (carnivorous) friends I was with all had larger meals than mine, made from ingredients costing a lot more than a bit of pasta and cheese sauce, yet my meal was hardly any cheaper. Sadly, this sort of thing is all too typical of pub restaurants - vegetarians are still mostly given very little, if any, choice but expected to pay as much for their cheaply made meals as those eating expensive meat or fish.

Our visit to the John O'Gaunt was a birthday lunch. There were four adults, a 13 month old baby and a rather bouncy puppy. We had booked and the restaurant was full. I understood completely why we were consigned to the bar (puppy) but this meant we did feel like we were forgotten. We were not there just for a main, and due to our wish to have three courses, our lunch lasted nearly three hours. This was way too long for a baby to sit in a high chair and a puppy to stay content with a chew. This spoiled our experience and as such I have to deduct a point. However, if there are no constraints on time, the food is good just be prepared to wait for it.

Dinner for 4. Overall very enjoyable, mushroom soup, tasty and piping hot with lovely soda bread. Enormous tempura prawns were excellent as were the scallops. Pork chop and burgers recommended, fish pie good however disappointingly small. Best for those with a small appetite. Desserts all went down well except for the one masquerading as a panna cotta, certainly not over-set, but still no wobble it was a sloshy creamy concoction with little taste, attractively topped with strawberry and whipped cream. No wonder it was served in a sundae glass. The biscuit served with it was nice. If a dessert doesn't set shouldn’t be served. Does the chef assume customers doesn’t know what a panna cotta is? Or perhaps it is the chef who doesn’t know!

A Sunday lunch treat and it certainly was! I had the roast beef with a huge Yorkshire pudding and plenty of potatoes and vegetables, my husband couldn't resist the homemade pie. Both meals were absolutely delicious and filling. I didn't have room for a desert but did try a spoonful of ice cream from the dessert my husband ordered. Great food and service, we hope to visit again soon.

Great and different local food menu and very welcoming especially on cold blustery day, a big plus to find the bar had a roaring fire in it. Another perfect Sunday lunch

Fantastic food in a light, modern and comfortable setting. Fresh home-cooked and very tasty, we were all delighted with our meals. The fish-pie was piping hot and full of a variety of tasty fish pieces in a creamy sauce. The pie of the day was excellent, fish and chips and burgers were all well received too! We just about managed a desert, also delicious. Highly recommend.

We're lucky to have this pub/restaurant in the local area. Lovely fresh, mainly local food Great service, the restaurant is well laid out, plenty of space so you aren't sitting too close to fellow diners. We had mussels, chicken liver, steak and sorbet all very tasty but we were spoilt for choice

Lovely ambience, good food, freshly cooked and served, although meat a little overcooked to what was ordered. The only reason I haven't scored it higher is that the starter and dessert menus were a little limited, and the cost was quite high for the area.

A mermorable first trip for all the right reasons. Excellent food, perfect portions, full of flavour, great selections available and waiting time not bad at all considering it was a very full restaurant. It is a very good sign that all tables were already booked weeks in advance but luckily for us we could be seated in the bar. Our waiter was extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Looking forward to returning soon.

I stopped in here on the way home, with my daughter and two friends and we felt welcomed immediately… The facilities were clean and checked regularly… The service was quick and we were greeted with a friendly smile. The atmosphere was welcoming and accommodating to someone with a young child. The food was lovely and the staff are friendly, & even made me laugh. Will be stopping in again soon.

A very welcoming experience thanks to the excellent heritage centre guides who knew their stuff and pointed us in the right direction. The Centre is a must visit not just for aged train spotters but for every one. The line has a new future with East West Rail which needs all our support to get locals back on trains. Great coffee and cake made the day.

It started well with a good selection on the menu. When we came to order our breakfast sandwiches my friend asked how much it would be to add an egg to her bacon sandwich, at which point the waitress advised that the prices on the menu had increased so weren't correct & could only say they had gone up by about 50p. On asking for a sparkling water she advised that had also gone up by 20p maybe 30p, these increases were due to the cost of living increase. When we questioned why the menus hadn't been updated she advised there were new owners & it hadn't been done yet but that there was a sign on the wall inside the shop advising of the price increase, we were sat outside but to be honest anyone entering the shop wouldn't have seen it as it would have been behind them. She then brought out the A4 sign. She also tried to find an updated menu which she couldn't find. Firstly I am sure this must be illegal to advertise one price & charge another & secondly a hand written note could have been added to the menu or a copy of the price increase attached to the menu which everyone would have seen. Maybe the new owners should hold fire on the price increase until new menus are available as it may save their reputation. The breakfast sandwiches were very tasty, however the 'glass' that accompanied the sparkling water was in fact a jar with a thread for a screw top. Some might call it funky but not to everyone's taste. Needless to say it wasn't used. There are standards which have to be met & the clear advertising of correct pricing is one of them. We are all effected by the cost of living crisis & on occasions when we do our bit to support local businesses we might be watching the pennies too.
