So disappointed in the John Lewis Restaurant in Southampton. Lack of staff and no Supervisor around like a few years ago. The only person who had a smile on her face was the lovely lady clearing the tables.

OMG! I called at John Lewis Leeds "The place to eat " yesterday lunchtime, about 1.30pm....just for a cuppa. Yes, the welcoming lady (function??) thought I MIGHT find a table as it was just for one. The were 4 people in the queue but I queued over ten minutes for my cuppa. Only one person serving. There seemed to be lots of staff around, one woman asked our server if she was OK and she must have said yes (rather than "I could do with a hand"). Plenty of empty tables but covered in dirty crockery. So not the place to eat for me; M and S next time!!

I had not been to the Place to Eat for some time as it had gone down hill so much. I recently had another look and saw that it had been refurbished, so gave it another try. The experience was definitely much better, and the food was lovely.

The place was packed at 1pm which l expected but not the understaffing! There were no sandwiches to be toasted on the counter and a sparse few plates of cold sandwiches . We had not been there for at least 18 months . We ordered 2 toasties and waited ages for them. A manager arrived but had nothing to offer. I told her the restaurant was understaffed but she said they had no more people! The ham and cheese one when it came was burnt on one side and the tuna one had no cheese in it - the salad on the side was browned and wilted on the edges . We joked about the fact that my husband actually got a slice of tomsto. On reflection l noted the assistant at the counter was wearing catering gloves and handling the sandwiches as well as taking cash. Not very hygienic! All in all one to avoid!

When we arrived, the queue was incredibly long with only one person serving who was clearly very stressed. There was not enough cups, the server had called for help which had not come and she was complaining about this very loudly. The seating area is not very pleasant. Nonetheless, the cake and tea was very good and we enjoyed them.

My friend and I were very disappointed on the service we didn't receive, on having lunch in the Southampton Restaurant. We were both having soup and roll. Where as recently, this was all done for us, from the assistant behind the counter. Now you help yourselves with the assistant, stood watching us. So the rolls, soup lids and spoons are all open to lots of hands from customers , which we thought was not hygenic. This also was the same case with helping yourself to the cakes. With more people breathing and coughing ! Not happy with this at all. So the assistants job was, basically, take your money !!

Extremely slow service. First in wieue but still took over 10 mins to be handed our food from counter. Cold food as the staff member dished up whilst still cooking our egg and toast. Everything of mine was cold and the plate was cold. Still ate it as the queue was long by that time so didn't want to re queue. I did not eat the veggi sausages though as they were so cold. Water glasses not very clean, had to change ours. Won't return

We came in on a Monday lunchtime which was quite busy, there were queues but everything seemed to flow quite well and we were served quickly. I had a lovely butternut squash soup, my partner had a generously filled tuna roll and a lovely latte each. Everything was delicious and we enjoyed the view by the window. Can highly recommended for those looking for a quick bite to eat wanting to take a break from shopping.

I called in for a quick coffee and cake prior to an appointment in Southampton. I am Coeliac and required help with the choice of cake that was gluten free. When I asked the Assistant she said “ I am not at liberty to help you… you will have to go and look at the labels”? JL how can you be so uncaring and unhelpful? What has happened to your customer service? Then on top of not helping me I was told “you have to help yourself”. To add insult to injury, on top of the cakes, inside the cake covers, were the spatulas that people had handled. Not great hygiene especially since there has been a rise in flu/covid/Norovirus. Come on JL you are suppose to be a leader in care of your customers.

Have been a regular customer since the shop opened. Restaurant is rapidly going downhill. Increasingly limited food selection and increasingly slow disinterested service. Tables no longer cleared promptly. Tables not properly wiped down by bored-looking staff. Now trolleys to take used trays are wheeled out and left in gangways and dangerously beside stairways. Has now become a place to avoid.

Arrived just gone 9am for coffee and croissants after dreadful train journey to Southampton. 5 staff standing behind coffee station chatting away, and asked for 2 cappacino, and 2 croissants. After waiting several minutes was told that the milk had not been collected so would have to wait, also no butter for croissants as had been left out in back kitchen. I would never go into this restaurant again, service absolutely appalling and staff thoroughly rude. Also noticed customers waiting for cooked breakfast were queuing for ages. Avoid at all costs.

Thought I'd pop in and try the breakfast as my previous experiences of the John Lewis Restaurant, although some time ago, had been pretty good and John Lewis is considered to be a well respected and quality brand so though they'd have food of a high standard. Wish I hadn't bothered! I had The Full Breakfast which I'm pretty sure is the worst cooked breakfast I've had, the only redeeming features being the freshly fried egg and hot baked beans. Sausage was cheap and nasty, Bacon overdone from being left too long under a heat lamp, Bubble and Squeak Hash Brown tasted terrible as did the mushrooms and the normal Hash Brown could at best could be described as meh. There was at least five staff behind the hot food counter, only two appeared to being doing anything while the other three were having a nice chill out while their two colleagues ran around doing everything and the queue steadily built up due to the slow service. Pretty sure I was overcharged too but as they wouldn't give me a receipt I can't be sure. Avoid! I can pretty much guarantee anywhere else in West Quay is better.

It used to be a treat, now it's a chore. The cake selection is woeful - delicious cakes used to be in attractive cabinet, now there's a few in cloches accompanied by dirty cake knives. As I have a nut allergy, I don't share my cutlery. When we visited, there were a few scones left and previous little else. There were a few toasties left and four baguettes. One choice of soup. Teas and coffees are slow to arrive despite numerous staff. I had a pot of tea plonked in front of me 'Tea' the lad said loudly to nobody in particular and no eye contact. No glasses for water. There was a very friendly girl who greeted customers and gave out trays. She looked happy, but nobody else did. I hope John Lewis management see the recent reviews and will arrest this slide. On the positive side, the outside cafe which JL used to run is now a Merricks, so happy days..!

Visited for a coffee on a Sunday lunchtime. Can’t believe how long it took to get 2 cups of coffee and it wasn’t very busy. The staff used to be so good but I feel things have definitely gone downhill. This may be down to cuts in staff. I was also very surprised to see them chewing away on gum whilst serving and clearing tables - not really what I would have expected from JL staff. The restaurant itself is looking very sad, the carpet is disgusting and looks as though it hasn’t been cleaned in a very long time. Tables were also quite dirty. Such a shame as it’s a great location and I remember when it was always busy and service and food were excellent. The Place to Eat at JL in Southampton was always perfect for a pit-stop or lunch whilst getting some retail therapy. However, recently this once lovely cafe has gone rapidly downhill!Yesterday's visit was a case in point. Saturday's are always busy but factor in the Christmas shoppers and those off cruise liners and it was busier than usual. Queues for hot food were out of the door and they had run out of some food options. There are two patisserie counters; one coffee machine not working, the other it's the milk machine. Not a problem for me if you like it black but long waits for latte's etc. with some customers being served before others and the whole thing very haphazard. Tempers getting frayed among shoppers, staff getting stressed. The Pattiserie's usually have a wide variety of delights (to suit all) but that diminished to a choice between Fruit cake and scones. Fruit cake dry and stale. Coffee's like dishwater. Tables not cleared. Food crumbs all over the place, making it look very dishevelled. How they are going to cope in the weekends to come with Christmas around the corner, I don't know. I do know I'm going somewhere else!!

We regularly shop in JL and eat in the cafe on top floor. Many of the staff - especially those in the hot food section - are bordering on rude. One lady in particular, whose name I am going to look closely at next time. No smiles, good afternoon, anything. On the assumption all staff are partners and many, in different departments, are extremely friendly and helpful, it is surprising these staff find it fine to act like this. I see from other reviews, people find portion sizes poor. I totally agree with this, having always previously had the curry until it shrunk to a fraction of its previous self. Food is over priced but, at the moment, the Place to Eat is convenient and near toilets. Talking of toilets, iI am told that, in the Ladies, one has been out of order for ages and today there were at least 3. Last week there were 4 out of order and one hand drier has also been out of action for weeks, unless it gets mended and breaks down in between our (frequent) visits.

We were in John Lewis anyway and decided we were hungry, the "Little Waitrose" experience is good so we assumed the restaurant would be the usual John Lewis standard. We were, unfortunately, disappointed. Ok, it's at the top of the building so should have fantastic views, it's obviously meant to be modern but it looks run down, unless you sit in one specific area, the main view is of the IKEA sign and it's fair to say it doesn't lift the spirits. So hopeful that the food would make it worthwhile, the menu sounded nice, we then chose the minted lamb pie with mash and gravy. It was served at a temperature that might combust at any second, pastry was hard, meat had been replaced with peas ( although meat was definitely in there, just not enough ) and the flavour overall was slightly burnt. To finish off I decided to visit the ladies, again run down, the Dyson handdryer had dirt in the bottom of it, the overall impression was dark and miserable despite being a really good size with loads of potential. The staff, whilst polite didn't come across as wanting to be there or overly proud of their work. John Lewis, get some decent lighting in there, revise how your good menu is cooked and do something to engage your staff and it could be lovely.

Sandwiches almost inedible. The baguette the worse I have ever eaten. Tough and tasteless. Salt content off the scale. Expensive for that poor quality. Coffee was insipid. In all a bad experience so I would not recommended to anyone.

Stopped off after hectic day shopping for a much needed caffeine fix. I had a latte and my mum had a cappuccino. Both coffees were disgusting. If mine hadn’t been a brown colour i would have thought i had gone off milk mixed with hot water. Mums was bitter she had to keep adding more sugar to take away the taste. We were charged £5.10 for these also. Wont be going there again. Not what you would expect from John Lewis. Now I have seen other bad reviews I see I’m not alone.

Hot food was really not up to much. The turkey pie was pretty bland and dull. The chips were floppy and not particularly warm. The vegetable curry was barely warm with stodgy, stuck together rice. Hardly any identifiable vegetables in it. They didn't reduce the price even though it was for a gluten free diner who couldn't have the poppadom. Battered fish was dry.

There is a wide range of selection of foods to choose from. It is great if you need to cater for different tastes and food options. Situated on the top floor of west quay, You can get a great view of part of Southampton. It is a bit pricey and it is self service.

Stopped in at John Lewis and decided to grab a quick bite for my son, coffee and tea for my wife and me. Really quite poor, tables pilled up with dishes, to be fair there was only one lady trying to keep on top of it, with a trolley and a dirty cloth.

We always call here for coffee when we’re shopping in Southampton. The cafe is located in the centre of the West Quay shopping mall (just outside John Lewis) which gives it a good busy atmosphere. Plenty of seating and a great selection of cakes, scones etc to go with your tea or coffee.

Used here on a busy Sat afternoon and had some great scones along with teas and coffees. Weather outside was rubbish so the views irrelevant from the elevated cafe at the top of the store. Good choice of food and snacks as well as drinks. Only gripe would be the delay in clearing tables where majority of people seemed unwilling to put their completed crockery etc on the tray and then place the tray in the racks provided. Good choice for a pit stop when visiting West Quay.

Cannot vault John Lewis. It was really busy but staff remained calm, in control, cheerful and helpful. The food and portions are excellent, slightly more expensive than other eateries but you are in John Lewis!

John Lewis (Southampton) very disappointed with my recent visit to the cafe in West Quay on Friday. I asked if there was a Dairy free and gluten free options and was directed to the Chocolate Drip cake, feeling excited until I noticed that the tongs from the millionaire shortbread is stored on the same plate as the Chocolate drip cake - serving slice - I mentioned to the lady behind the counter that they need to store on a separate plate, when I was given the disclaimer statement that they can't guarantee safe from allergens due to processes in the kitchen.

When this place opened it was excellent so it’s very disappointing to see how far they have fallen. I’m sorry to say this but the place is filthy. The trays don’t look like they’ve had a goood clean in ages, there was food bits on the table, between the tables, up the window frames and on the window cills. This isn’t a “Four in a bed” review, I didn’t go looking for the dirt, it was just obvious the place isn’t cared for and managed properly. Come on JLP, you need to get a grip! I popped to the ‘gents’ after we had eaten and the Dyson hand dryer had hair and all sorts lurking in it. The food was ok but we won’t be going back in a hurry when there are so many better places to eat.

The restaurant is an absolute joke, there’s nowhere near enough staff on the counters. To add to that the scone was dry and there wasn’t any butter in the dish. To be fair a staff member did leave his cleaning job to get some.

Just over a week ago I was diagnosed with type 2, anyway I have been really good and happily making changes to my life. So I got up Saturday morning at 5 as is the norm and had my bowl of cold oats to keep me full. Come 10:30 I was feeling a little hunger but was out numbered and surrounded by smells from beyond. That I would have walked in to before. My partner pointed out to me the Avacado on grannery toast(no butter) with 2 poached eggs and 1/2 a tomato. Really good plate of tucker to fill a hole. Thank you

This department store restaurant has great views across the docks. Coffee and cakes very good quality at a reasonable price. Tables not cleared and cleaned very quickly so can look a mess with the nicest tables still having used crockery on them.

This was a convenient place to meet our daughter when visiting Southampton but will be looking elsewhere from now on. Have management had a good look at the filthy carpets recently? They look like there had been an oil leak! We arrived at 10am, the table hadn’t been cleaned and there was food leftovers under our table and other tables in the vacinity. I asked a member of staff if she could clean our table, which she did, but apologised saying ‘sorry about the mess but we only have agency staff working and they can’t be bothered to do anything.’ For the prices John Lewis charge this is unacceptable and we moved on elsewhere, somewhere a lot cleaner and cheaper for lunch.

Bill arrived at the end and they’d added on a bottle of wine that supposedly I had but definitely did not. I queried this but they refused to take it off and we had to pay. The server would have known we never had a bottle. Really dishonest and won’t be returning.

I have to use one of their electric buggies to do my shopping. I could easily get to the counter and the girls put my coffee on the table for me. Many thanks.

I can go alone. Meet and talk with people. All age ranges. Good beer prices. Good staff. It's been a few years since I ate there. But, it was always very good

What a lovely friendly environment. Was seen by a girl called Alicia . Who not only was very professional when I had a problem with my order she was very prompt to get this resolved for me . Absolute credit to the team . Food was incredible. Was a little sad my favorite doughnut wasn’t there but had a delightful replacement desert. Definitely be coming back here again . Just want to say thank you for a lovely evening
