Used to be my Go-To place when I was in Newcastle. Ah the memories!

Take it from a Malaysian.. This is as authentic as it gets. Highly recommend the mee mamak goreng, nasi goreng kampung, nasi lemak, Rojak pasambur, roti canai and lamb briyani.

The boss is very enthusiastic and the food is delicious!

Went to JJ’s last night after seeing someone post about it on the Newcastle foodie group on fb and it did not disappoint! I spent 3 months in Malaysia at the start of the year and have been craving it since I got home! JJ’s is the most authentic Malaysian food I have had over here! The taste and quality was unreal and I was really happy to be able to introduce my friends to real Malaysian food! The cafe is only ran by a husband and wife team with no staff so to bring out the quality of food that they were serving with very little wait times was especially impressive. The restaurant is halal so no alcohol is served but you can bring your own. The food here is so reasonably priced too so will definitely not break the bank. I can’t wait to come back and try the rest of the menu, I think I have a new favourite Newcastle restaurant!

Absolutely delicious food and caring staff! We were a big party with many kids and everyone, from the pickiest kid to the most adventurous adult was very happy with their food! I tried about 6 dishes and enjoyed them all, especially the rendang. I'm really looking to forward to going again.

On the outside I would have never noticed JJs. My friend took me and WOW. The food is amazing. Just the simple Nan and chicken curry was amazing.

To be terribly polite... I hope they were just having a bad night. To be honest - This was possibly the worst takeaway we've ever had. Slow prep (over an hour for collection); meat given to vegetarians; extremely small portions - I can't emphasize this enough (a few milimetres of oily chili water with pork strips with two boiled eggs was one curry; the other wasn't much better.)

Really dirty front and interior. Grease and dust on the at the tables. Service was a bit abrupt when we asked for more than one menu (instead of just 1 with 4 people). Food service very slow and dire taste and quality. Not much vegtables or tofu served in the dishes. Dirty floors and looking at the kitchen area, on paying worse we ever seen. I rather pay an extra £2 a dish and eat somewhere cleaner.

Came here with friends based on the previous reviews. Horrible experience all round. Slow service, just 1 menu available for a table. Dirty tables full of grease and dust. Food quality and taste appalling. Even friend who been to the far East agreed. Mee gorang dish just had 3 pieces of tofu. Toilets in dire state. Dead flies and dust at the window. Kitchen is worse than far east street stalls.

Amazing Malaysian food and such a lovely family running the cafe, it's just like going to uncles for a meal! Just like the mamak's back in Malaysia, but right here in Newcastle, and the food is every bit as fantastic as the best I've had in Malaysia. The roti canai and chicken is absolutely the best gravy I've had anywhere. It's like a little piece of home.

The food tasted good and reasonably priced, however, we could tell the ingredients were low quality. They were nice(not in the British way so they may cause misunderstanding), and the owner was washing his hands repeatedly while preparing the food though. Just a heads up that Laksa and Mi Goreng(both types) are instant noodles with toppings. I appreciate that the owner casually admitted it. It’s not uncommon for restaurants to use instant noodles after all. Bubble Cha’s Laksa is also cooked instant noodles.

Best Malaysian food in Newcastle.

As a Malaysian foodie living overseas, I really value places that bring me a slice of home such as JJ's! It is run by a lovely couple, has a huge variety (I am going to work my way through it all!) and a lot of heart and delicious-ness in the food! We live a way away and haven't been for a while since the pandemic and decided to make our way there for dinner a couple of nights ago and left very happy and satisfied. We had the hainanese chicken rice, maggi goreng, rojak pasembur, and thosai with hot teh tariks and milo. ALL really good and of good value. We also had a lovely chat with the owner- thank you so much for the wonderful food and service. We will be back! We highly recommend JJ's!

ISN'T JJ'S CAFE ANYMORE. It's some foreign food place that's absolutely minging. Rubbish and spilt food outside. Full of smoke. Dirty floors and tables. Absolutely no hygiene practices in place. Everything is covered in grease. I got up and walked out after 2 mins of sitting on a sticky chair at a grease covered table. AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!

If you miss Malaysian taste food while staying in Newcastle, this eatery is very highly recommended. Its rojak Pasembor is marvellous. The service is slow but if you're not in hurry, the meals you ordered for is worth waiting patiently. The owner is very professional and friendly too.

The food was delicious. Very flavoursome, a bit spicy, and just really good. Food was ready on time, cheap and big portions.

This was our first visit to JJs cafe, and it won’t be our last. The food was tasty and hot, and all freshly prepared, an excellent choice for anyone who wants to try Malaysian food.

The food was excellent. The owner was welcoming, attentive and informative about the menu. Would 100% recommend this place to anyone wanting to try Malaysian cooking. Looking forward to my next visit.

I would say JJCafe it’s the most authentic Malaysian restaurant in Newcastle. Ordered rojak and Mee Siam, both didn’t disappoint me and it’s flavourful! 😋 definitely will be back again!

Top notch food, like being back in Penang!

Very authentic Malaysian food, run by a Malaysian couple. Love it and I go here once or twice a week, even every day if I lived nearer and could afford it! Can be busy sometimes as it's just the two people running the entire place along with delivery and takeout services, but good for a relaxing meal if not in a hurry. Highly recommend the stir fried noodles and nasi goreng kampung - and the okra curry is divine. The chef is happy to adjust spice levels and make dishes vegetarian on request (even with online delivery, just call them up to let them know).

I love this place. As a Malaysian, this satisfies nearly all my cravings in one place. Highly recommend the stir fried rice and noodles and curries, they'll even reduce the spice level if you prefer. JJ don't ever go away!

The food was amazing. It’s really hard to get food with balanced spices. They did an extremely good job. Prices were really reasonable. I’ll definitely be a repetitive customer.

Every time when I visit my son in Newcastle i wan’t to diner at JJ’s. Normaly I order very spicy, at JJ’s it’s medium. Delicious food. Outstanding soup. And very friendly service. In a simple restaurant you can enjoy delicious meals. I look forward to my next visit.

Authentic Malaysian food and experience. Very much a mom and pop shop run by an elderly Malaysian couple. Regular haunt for Malaysians in the North East. Has seen better days in years gone by but still a must have.

I ordered the Nasi Lemak for takeaway, the sambal had a nice heat and it felt like a home cooked meal. The prices were also very reasonable and friendly staff!

We ordered from here in person, having regularly ordered online. There's a very extensive menu, over 100 options cooked fresh and served by the really friendly owner of the cafe. Lots of variety at good price points, from noodles to biryani and curries. Definitely in my top 3 restaurants in the north east. And the drinks are delicious too!!

We ordered: • Thali • Chicken Varuwal • Char Kway Teow • Gobi Manchurian Wow! Everything was absolutely delicious. We loved the little bites offered in the Thali - each dish was a treat as we didn’t know what to expect. It featured squid, prawn, lamb, chicken, lentil curry accompanied with rice and flatbread 😋 This can only be ordered when you dine-in (although we came prepared with containers to take home in case we couldn’t finish it!) The Chicken Varuwal was so tender with the perfect kick of spice. The Gobi Manchurian (cauliflower) was incredibly moreish, tangy and crispy. The Char Kway Teow tasted like it was made with some proper wok hei too 😋 Service was excellent, the owner is so kind and friendly! Highly recommended to anyone looking for a delicious meal 😋✨

Great for takeaways or just dine in with friends. Ideal for people who care more about the taste of the food than decor. Authentic food at very reasonable prices. I would recommend chicken curry for people who can handle spicy dishes. Roti is also lovely. Chicken rice is one of the best I've tasted in UK.

I've ordered takeaway three times and unfortunately I won't be coming back after this. I've ordered different food every time and whilst it's edible it's far from anything to rave about. The first time I ordered kwai teow, roti canai and a lamb curry. The lamb was nice but the roti is something out of a shop that's been frozen and reheated, and the noodles were soggy and eggy. I don't recall what I had the second time, but I do remember feeling very underwhelmed and thinking the food wasn't very good. This last time I ordered tom yum stir fried noodles which had no taste of tom yum, just some spicy noodles which ended up soggy. Ginger chicken: nice but lacking in ginger flavour and sweet and spicy prawns - also ok but underwhelming. The noticeable thing was both dishes were just covered in a tonne of grease and I recall feeling the same way the last time I had ordered food from here. I don't know what the service is like when you dine in, but the takeaway service really needs improvement. I ordered online and it said there was a half hour delay which was fine. We showed up just after the pickup time stated, food wasn't ready and was told it's being "cooked now". We waited half an hour past the stated pick-up time which says to me that they had started cooking it when we turned up. This really wasn't ideal when I was sat in the car with my 3-year-old son and it was freezing outside. I've given it two stars rather that one because we got an apology for the wait and the food isn't bad, it's edible. It just lacks in almost everything I've had. If your dine in customers are very satisfied then maybe stick that and stop doing take away as it seems that's where all the complaints are.

Fantastic food and a great price

We absolutely love this place for indian-malaysian style food. We are malaysian btw, so this feel authentic and close to home. And it is halal! My recs would be - pasembur (has peanut) - nasi lemak - mee goreng mamak (spicy) - teh tarik - roti canai - chicken rice (friends has recommended) I recently tried their thali (non veg) it was so good! Reasonably priced and great portions size

The moment I tasted the cuisine in JJ's Café, the Malaysian 'Wok-Hei' was evident. 🧑🏻‍🤝‍🧑🏾JJ and Sundre, both from Malaysia, have been running this café for over 23 years, in this exact location. Sundre, the chef, has already been running a Malaysian Street Food stall prior to the move to Newcastle. The appearance of the café may not be dazzling, but that adds to the authenticity of this spot - how this café has gracefully aged through the years. 🍝The Mamak Mee Goreng was spot-on. Wok-Hei. Spicy. Strong with Malaysian Flavours. Generous amounts of Tofu (which we both love). I enjoyed it so much. Back in my hometown (Penang Island), we are spoilt for choice when it comes to Mee Goreng. The drought of such cuisine here made this Mamak Mee Goreng incredible. What would have completed the whole dish, however, are small strips of lettuce and 'limau' (a lime wedge) for presentation and taste. Nevertheless, it was incredibly delicious. 🌶️The Rojak Pasembur - my favourite dish of all. I have friends here ordering this particular dish every single week. After trying it, I'd understand why. The fried savoury fritters complemented by the peanut sauce, tofu, cucumbers, and egg.. Just incredible. 🥘Michelle and I LOVED the curries. We had egg curry, and Manchurian Cauliflower. I'm not trying to sugar-coat this, but the Manchurian Cauliflower even surpasses the standards of some Indian Restaurants I've been to in Kuala Lumpur. By far, the curries here were closest to home I've ever had in the UK. Everything served here is rich and spicy. Oh, and the Teh Tarik was lovely. Clearly, appearance and decor isn't the forte of JJ's Malaysian Café. I, however, would forgo that any time, simply because of the authenticity of the cuisine, and the prices here which are so worth it, and the fact that JJ and Sundre are also such lovely people.

Good value, cheap and cheerful indo/Malay cafe.

Perfect place if you’re looking for the Malaysian mamak vibes in Newcastle. I got nasi goreng kampung (best seller) and milo ice. The nasi goreng is a killer with crispy anchovies (from Malaysia) and would highly recommend if you like spicy food 🥘. The owner also suggested to try the chicken rice and mee goreng (both are bestsellers as well) 🫶

Definitely my favourite place for authentic Malaysian food in Newcastle. I love the Nasi Lemak, Lamb curry and the Thali. Definitely try the Thali! everything is freshly made ❤️

Ordered via deliveroo and food wasn’t great. The breads (roti canai and naan) were clearly frozen/store bought. Nasi goreng was more reminiscent of a fried rice from a Chinese takeaway than actual fried rice. All in all, I wouldn’t recommend getting takeaway from here. Can’t speak to eating in, for which it seems to have very positive reviews.

Delicious Malaysian food. If the portion of food is bigger will be better. Only 2 person working there, so food comes a bit slow.

Never underestimate this place. Food is superior taste in Malaysian style. Portion size is really good also for much reasonable price. Wish owner can expand this business to city as well.

Placed an order on Uber eats, they had us waiting for over an hour while the delivery times kept changing and then they suddenly cancelled the order. No explanation. To make matters worse we rang the restaurant and the guy couldn’t clarify why the order had been cancelled or who even had cancelled it (he said we needed to contact Uber which is ridiculous as they clearly were the ones who cancelled it, not Uber). He said he was too busy to talk to us and put the phone down. Mental. Cannot even believe this is an actual place of business.

Very authentic malaysian food, definitely the most recommended one in the north east! Ambiance and ventilation are abit subpar given it's an old building but the taste of food definitely makes up for it. Takeaway is the way to go if you want to avoid the poor ventilation.

Wonderful authentic Malaysian food run by a lovely elderly couple. I thought I was in a gerai/mamak restaurant from back home. However, decor is a bit dated, but not too dirty. Food may take time but not too long due to staff shortage and most dishes are cooked to order. Despite this, I still recommend to check this place out. Highly recommended for take-out or delivery e.g., via UberEats/JustEats etc. Excellent place; how you would get food in Malaysia, is how you would get it here! Sincerely, a Malaysian! 🇲🇾

Came here as it’s close to our house- true hidden gem. Huge menu offering traditional Malay food that was all made fresh to order and was served in beautiful authentic crockery. Prices are ridiculously reasonable and the service was great! Delicious ! Gonna be back...

JJ's cafe is a hidden jewel of Newcastle. simple. The food is absolutely exquisite and the service was impeccable. The best Malay food to be found outside of Malaysia! couldn't recommend it enough!
