Jim Jacks in Scottish Borders

We took two friends for lunch to Jim Jacks in Peebles ,we have been many time before but this was our friends first visit.We all had the small fish teas which includes fish and chips in batter,bread and a side of beans or mushy peas and either a cold drink or tea.They both really enjoyed it.The service is spot on as are the prices.It is one of two of the best chip shops ever the other is Jim Jacks inDunfermline D&A,N&B

Amazing food, excellent fish and chips. Our whole family were delighted with the food on offer. Great sized portions reasonably priced and friendly staff. Happy to explain the menu and couldn't fault the service in any way. Highly recommend that you visit here on your trip to Peebles or the surrounding area.

Very good fish and chips, the chips were very crunchy and had a very good taste and the fish was pretty decent aswell. Will be coming back

There were five of us on our visit to Peebles on26th January 2023.Everything was perfect,Tomas the fryer and Jessica our waitress very nice and welcoming.The fish ,haggis and white puddings were superb,the batter was great nice and crispy.We could not fault anything at all and the restaurant was busy which is good.The people of Peebles don’t know how lucky they are to have a chippie as good as JJs.Well done. We sat inside and in error our food was given to the table next to us. My partner had scampi and they had mistaken it for nuggets. They realised what had happened and got the food back off the next table and gave to us, however the people who had been given the food first had put salt and vinegar on and had begun to eat it!! When I said we wanted a fresh one the member one staff didn’t want to change it. Eventually they agreed to change just the chips as they were covered in salt which my partner doesn’t like on his chips. I actually couldn’t believe it. The chips did taste nice and the fish that I had was if a good size and it wasn’t a bad price.

Visited this chippy many times and always sit in. Great service, polite, good portion size and amazing value. It’s well worth visiting and I am sure you won’t be disappointed- I never am.

Usually no complaints about Jim Jack's takeaway- however - in tonight's order, the battered sausage contained two sausages (there are usually three). Why ? The 'standard fish' supper contained a fish the size of a 'mini' fish supper, with about half the amount of chips as normal. Why ? We have a family order about once per week and have never been as disappointed as we were tonight. Is it now policy to scam the customers with reduced portion sizes, or was this a one-off ?

Hot, fresh, deliciously tasty haddock and chips, cooked to order. Friendly staff, clean premises, definitely worth a visit.

Worth the 1 hour drive down to Peebles for this. Great staff, perfectly cooked fresh fish. Done right. How fish & chips should be. Full sit in fish tea with side, bread & butter and a pot of tea, absolute bargain at £8.75. Streets ahead in quality, portion size & value for money compared with Cromars or the Anstruther up in North East Fife.

Regularly visit Peebles from Edinburgh just to sit in for the fish tea, food is always piping hot and fresh, large portion with a side and a drink plus bread and butter, always consistently excellent, and amazing value.

Just the go to place any time of the week but especially after a hard week. The standard of the food is fantastic always fresh no reheats sit in for a fish tea and you will no regret the trip. An absolute treasure of a place. The stand service just can’t be faulted always friendly and helpful

We are in the middle of moving house so we went to Jim Jack's for our tea and I had their fish and my wife had the chicken. This was one of the taisties quick meals we have ever had. If you are in or arounf Peebles there is only one place to go "Jim Jack's"

Visited for the first time with my wife this is a gem of a place, food is delicious and excellent value at £8.75 for a fish tea. Staff are really friendly.

We have had many fish and chip takeaways from Jim Jack's and until today it has been good.Our fish today was very small and so overcooked it was like sawdust.The chips by contrast were hard.It was a couple of young lads behind the counter and whilst they were polite they did not show much interest.We travel from Edinburgh to get our fish and chips here but unfortunately we will not be going back.

We were visiting Peebles for the weekend and JimJacks had been recommended to us by a local. We were not disappointed, absolutely wonderful. JimJacks has a takeaway part and another area for sit down diners - the sit down area has about 6 or 7 tables and gets extremely busy for those taking an early supper. It seemed to quieten down between 7.30 and 8.30pm and closed at 9pm. We dined in and our food was cooked fresh to order. The fish just melted in the mouth and the portion sizes were very generous. I opted for a mini fish supper - fish, chips and mushy peas for about £7; it was a good sized meal - excellent value for money, friendly service and a good central location.

Been coming here for over a year and never had a bad meal. Tried the fish tea in both battered or breaded and both are excellent along with tea and bread and butter at a very reasonable price !! Friendly staff clean and bright sit in section. We will continue to visit every week !

Food here is cooked to order not sat waiting for you to arrive, its hot and flavoursome. The batter on the fish is so crispy. You may have to wait a couple of minutes for it to cook but you know its fresh. There is a cafe here also for you to have a sit down meal instead of taking it out, the food is just as good in the cafe. I run a taxi company in Peebles and I believe in the food here so much i deliver it to the rest of Peebles. I get nothing from Jim Jacks for this, we get a delivery charge from the customer.

Sat teatime managed to get table and were warmly greeted. We had fish teas and smoke sausage supper .

Have both dined in and taken out haddock and chips, and for me it was only OK each time. Taste and appearance of both fish and chips were a little bland. The texture of the fish made me think it had been frozen, but I don't know that for sure. I've had worse, but I've had much better also.

This is a small Fish and Chip shop just off the High Street but well worth paying a visit, this is the second time we have visited this place and not been disappointed.

Eight adults and four children had a brilliant birthday lunch. The food was of excellent quality and the staff were friendly and helpful. The children were very well looked after and really enjoyed their ice cream.

We chose to go for the sit in option of the haddock supper which was haddock and chips, bread and butter with mushy peas (or a choice of sides) and a pot of tea. It is only a small place with about half a dozen tables but we were lucky in that someone was leaving as we walked in. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, with the younger waitress obviously learning from the more experienced. Both did a great job. Everything was cooked fresh to order. The portion and quality of food was excellent. If you like fish and chips and are in Peebles - go to Jim Jacks.

Immense fish and chips, and fully recommend the scampi. An absolute delight after a long drive. Staff were really courteous and helpful. Will def come again.

As haddock & chips go, this place does some of the nicest & freshest anywhere. The sit in fish tea for £7.75 is great value. Large portion of haddock & chips, tea, bread & butter & mushy peas or choice of sides. Done as it should be. Small space so you might be lucky to get a table at busy times. Friendly staff. You can tell how super fresh the fish is as you can still see the veins after cooking. Well worth the 37 mile drive in my opinion.

Big storm followed by power cut in Peebles and surrounding area on 25/7 . A few eating establishments had closed their doors for the evening but not this place thankfully . A bit of a delay while the guy re booted his frying range etc but well worth the wait .

Awful service, waited 30 Minutes for two portions of chips while those who ordered 15 Minutes after me got served. Had to complain before I got served, not what you need from a chippy! The chips were not worth the wait or the annoyance, avoid if you can.

Spent three months in Peebles and Jim Jack's was a Friday night staple - fish is cooked to order and only takes 5-10 minutes if they're busy. Scottish local cuisine at it's best.

The restaurant part of this shop is quite small but that had no bearing on the fish tea which we both enjoyed - beautiful piece of fish along with chips and sides + bread & butter + a pot of tea all for £8.75 each - amazing value.

CASH ONLY WARNING: Nobody will tell you that Jim Jack’s is CASH ONLY until you get the check and attempt to use a credit card. No signs, no warnings, nothing. And yes, shockingly there are still places in 2019 that don’t take credit cards, so beware. Americans are not accustomed to cash only.

We had battered haggis ( very well spiced) and haddock ( decent amount) with peas, salad and chips.. Everything was delicious, the batter was light and crispy but not greasy, almost a tempura. The service was attention e but not intrusive. The place an unpretentious chippy batting well above its order. An excellent simple lunch

Staying at Glentress Forest Lodges we did some of our own catering, we ate out at Nashys (excellent), Traquair Arms Hotel - Innerleithen (excellent) and had a takeaway from here.

Always cooked to order, lovely fresh haddock and delicious chips, extra crispy if you want. Spotlessly clean and friendly.

Stopped in here with my teenage kids on the recommendation of a local. This was our first Fish & Chips experience on our 2 week trip in Ireland & the U.K. We were a little apprehensive as none of us are big fish fans. I have to say we all agreed that it ended up being one of our favorite dinner meals on our whole trip. The batter was great, the fish was moist and tasted good, and the fillet size was huge. The chips portion size was huge also, wish they'd have been just a tad more crisp, but tasted great. We got it for takeaway and they put each serving in a cardboard takeaway box and they almost couldn't close the box it was so full of food. The best thing about it though was the price - under 7 pounds for each serving. We got 3 orders to feed 5 of us and were pretty well satisfied. Saw many places on our trip where fish & chips cost almost twice as much as here. Biggest disappointment for us was that we were only in this area for 1 day and therefore didn't have a chance to eat here more than once, as we definitely would have done after the first experience. One last note, payment was cash only, so bring some cash with you.

2nd visit here, sat in this time . Was empty at first so got a table no problem. Restaurant and toilet spotless clean.staff really friendly and pleasant. We ordered breaded fish & chips and scampi & chips, both with mushy peas and bread and butter and a chicken burger with chips, water , Coke & tea. Everything was served quickly and was delicious. Food fresh and piping hot. Chips excellent! All this filling tasty meal for around £20 for the 3 of us. Great value and very enjoyable. Really like this place, highly recommended and hope to return next time we visit Peebles.

We decided to visit for Saturday lunch. The restaurant is on the small size, so this involved a small wait of 10 minutes before a table became available, which wasn't an issue. The place is clean and we found the staff friendly. We opted for haddock and chips with mushy peas and bread and butter. The food is freshly cooked to order, so arrives piping hot. The fish and chips are cooked like they should be, the batter is light and crispy, the chips are crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, more importantly they were not greasy. I thought that the prices were reasonable for the portion sizes and food quality on offer. This is a little hidden gem of a place, providing some of the best fish and chips you will find for miles, and we are planning to return again very soon.

Best fish & chips for miles around. Freshly cooked. Consistently brilliant. Great wee sit in cafe doing proper fish teas. In the top 5 in whole of Scotland in my opinion. Worth the 75 mile round trip just to experience it.

Visited today whilst staying in nearby caravan park. Lovely little cafe style place, really clean and very welcoming! We all ordered Haddock.. The young man who served us was great- very polite- nothing was a bother for him. Our fish teas came and the fish was amazing! So fresh tasting and the chips were great. Everything about it was good. Six of us thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. The next time we’re in Peebles, I’d 100% return!!

We went in here in a spur of the moment decision and boy was it a good one!! They had one table left and although we ordered the mini fish supper tea - they did lots o mini versions of other chip shop[ items but we had the min fish supper with mushy pea's (although there was many other extras we could have had - curry sauce etc.) bred and butter, tea and for Mr Fussy - a can of juice - BARGAIN!! The door was going constantly the whole time we were in there with people looking to get a table and I can now see why. Just basic surroundings but it the quality and quantity of the food that matters and boy did they deliver. We plan on returning very soon - what a find!!!

Yummy fish and chips, value high tea with tea & bread, plus choice of garnish.The fish is too die for just as it should be, large fresh haddock, hand cut chips just out of the fryer.Nice service. There is a full menu throughout the day from 12.00 noon - 8.00p.m. The chippy side was busy with locals which shows quality products local people support.

We decided to have fish and chips from Jim Jacks to take away. In England portions of fish and chips are huge and we always end up absolutely stuffed or wasting the leftovers. However, here at Jim Jacks a large fish, chips and peas was the perfect sized portion for my husband and I to share. It was very tasty, the chips were fresh and the batter on the fish was incredibly light and crispy.

Visited this wee place several times, always first class food and service. Female owner has great banter . Excellent value!.

There is very little veggie choice on the menu but after selecting a veggie burger I quickly changed my mind when they offered to fry it in dripping! Ugh, wont be back. This only came to light as our visit was later and the main fryer was turned off. Very poor.

We were recommended this place and we weren't disappointed, Fish and Chips as they should be. Proper good chunky chips and crispy light fish batter with home made mushy peas washed down with good strong tea. What could seriously be better!

Had white (mealy) pudding supper. One of the best, if not the best mealy I have ever had. Fast friendly service and food was piping hot.

Absolutely fantastic Fish & Chips to die for, beautiful fresh fish and beautiful Chippie Chips, reasonably priced & delivered to the door piping hot by a friendly taxi driver, Excellent Veggie Burger & brilliant Chicken Nuggets for my Grandchildren, this order also came with another single mini fish & portion of Onion Rings all for less than £20, cooked & delivered to the highest quality

Definitely one of the best chippies I've had. Fish and chips cooked to order so it's always piping hot and fresh. The batter was crispy and light and not greasy at all. Give this place a try, you won't regret it. Getting hungry just thinking about it :)

From experiencing the horrible Peebles Fish Bar I tried this Fish & Chips shop, very good indeed, the Fish is fresh and large, the chips are well cooked and the service was great, very good indeed. Closes early so don't leave it too late.
