This is a lovely place with great service (yes, it's busy - for a reason!) and good food. Definitely worth a detour. However it is really not great for gluten-free. There's usually a cake (very sweet and rather too much icing) and a traybake, but if you don't have a sweet tooth you are in trouble. They do offer gluten-free bread but it is really nasty and you get a much smaller portion (which also means much smaller sandwiches) for the same price. And three small oatcakes doesn't really cut it as a substitute for a roll with soup. They used to do far more gluten-free food but now it really isn't a place I (or my fellow coeliacs) would choose.

I run a group for adults with learning disabilities and we go out for lunch together a couple of times a month. We have visited Simply Scottish twice this year and they are always so welcoming and friendly to us! Some of the group members need a little extra time to read the menu or make a decision about what to order, as well as paying at the end, but the staff at Simply Scottish are very understanding and give everyone the time and help they need. The group told me they would recommend the cheese burgers and the biscoff traybake to others after our visit today. Thank you for the welcoming atmosphere and a very tasty lunch both times we have been in!

Came here for breakfast on the last day of our holiday as a family of 5. Friendly welcoming staff and a good choice of breakfast items on the menu. The drinks & food took a while to come but the place was really busy so understandable. Everything we had was delicious and tasted fresh and the biscoff latte was so good. We got some cakes to take away for later on and these were all delicious too, can highly recommend the apple & cinnamon cake it was amazing and all reasonably priced too. Would love to visit again and try out the lunch menu!

Attitude of staff is terrible. Told ‘no room at the inn’ on sight (booked tables). They were almost saved by a very polite gentleman who said we could have their table (he noticed too). Waitress took her annoyance out on him initially’have to wipe this table first’. Our first choice wasn’t available (?) We waited approximately 35 minutes - still no food. We left - staff need anti-discriminatory training.

What a gem of a find!!! In the rain we didn’t want to walk too far following our visit to Alnwick Castle. We decided to give this place a try and was not disappointed! The sandwich and flat bread that we ordered were very generous with filling/topping and very tasty. The walls were decorated with beautiful prints in frames very reasonably priced. Our very reasonably priced lunch turned into an expensive one as we bought a number of cards and two prints!!! The staff were very friendly and efficient.

Quiet traditional wee cafe, few old ladies having lunch. Lentil soup good & wholesome but cullen skink was, for me, far too creamy which made it quite heavy. Would have preferred the option of crunchy bread rather than a slice of soft pan loaf but at least bread was brown. £10 for two plates of soup, no drinks.

When she got round to taking our order, she managed it without so much as a word or a smile. My wife went up to pay and as she took her card out, the woman reached over with the card machine and tapped it on the card again without a word or even confirming my wife wished to pay contactless. She could learn much from the younger staff if they wish to have returning business. I would point out we have been a number of times before and always had good service. Soup of the day was really tasty. We had a great lunch here including chicken wrap and slow cooked steak and Ale pie.

We dropped in after lunch and the place was still pretty full, and continued to be so all the time we were there. A pretty good sign.

Arriving at a small cafe in a group of 7 including 3 children, one that needs a high chair, can often feel awkward, especially if the tables are small. However, here they've clearly done this before. Within seconds two tables were pulled together in a way that didn't block anyone else and we were sitting ordering our food. The food was all delicious and very well priced. We were too full for cake, but they were happy to box some up for us to take away which we had later on - it was also very good.

This cafe does not allow dogs inside so we ended up having our coffee on the pavement tables outside.

Stopped for lunch at it was recommended by the owners of the cottage we were staying at. So glad we did. The food was freshly cooked with good fresh ingredients, drinks were ice cold in the searing heat and the cakes were to die for. The waitresses could have been more proactive but that didn't stop me giving this gem 5 stars and I left a tip. Thanks and well done.

We had an unplanned stop here and had the most delicious food. The Cullen skink was amazing. It was very busy but we didn’t need to wait long for our food / our new favourite stop off point!

The staff and the service is excellent here, friendly, caring and knowledgeable. But the food selection lets the place down a little. To much pork products and very choices if you don’t eat pork. The coleslaw would be better if it didn’t have raisins in it, even when you have suggested this over the last 3yrs they still continue to put them in. Brilliant size portions but could do with someone who knows how to cook. Coffees and cakes are excellent and have enjoyed many over the years but the main food could do with some work for the prices they charge.

We were hungry after a visit to the abbey and all the cafes seemed to serve the same filled rolls so we went here for something slightly different. We were served quickly and the food came out fast though my Mum said her soup hadn’t been cooked long enough and there were lipstick marks on my glass. My Haggis, Neeps and Tatties was tasty though a bit short on the neeps. It was okay but I don’t think it would survive in a bigger town.

We have Been in here a few times and the food has been consistently good. The staff were very pleasant but one waitress definitely stood out above the rest (the short young girl with long black hair and glasses) it was a very busy day and she was very attentive even though she was looking after everyone else. We believe that she is a credit to the cafe! We will definitely be back and we hope this waitress will be working to make us feel welcome again.

Go here now before everyone else figures out what amazing value this place is! The drive through the Scottish countryside is stunning (a half-hour drive from the railway stop at Galashiels). The owners have created something special that I simultaneously want to keep to myself and share with the world. Oxana's hosting (and baking and wine-pairing) skills mean you are welcomed with friendly service, clear explanations of the wine pairings and amazing, sweet treats. We have been twice - once in September and once in November - and from beginning to end, our glasses were never empty, and we were treated to amazing service. Now, the food is really something to talk about. Bryn is doing something special here. The food is fresh and innovative while remaining down to earth and approachable. A simple parsnip soup sent our table to heaven with its perfect spice. We had pork belly with the crunchiest crackling and lentils with vegetables that were flavoured so beautifully I couldn't tell what was in them. Blue cheese with truffled honey had all of us begging for more. Every bite is a delight, and some of it was items I wouldn't normally order. This food, this place, is truly something special, reflecting our Borders community and some of the best food in Scotland. Go now!

Stopped in for some lunch today. Friendly service with a good and varied choice of menu. Offers half portions of meals if more suitable. Brilliant value. Hot and cold options available. Felt like the teapot was bottomless, think it was 3 cupfuls in total!

Wonderful food and so nicely presented and the young man serving was so polite and professional. Only negative was the disappointing vegetarian options for my sister. Macaroni cheese is more suited to a cafe menu. But a lovely evening none the less.

Got to say, I’ve never had a bad meal or experience in here. The ham hock and lentil soup as amazing, the steak and mushroom pie was outstanding. It was packed with lean steak in a lush, beefy broth type gravy. Great fies, a la dente peas and everything was piping hot and cooked to order. Even the plates were warm, which I always appreciate. The staff were great and the owner is a real friendly guy. If yer heading North or South on the A68, make sure this is yer pit stop, even for a coffee and cake. Made me smile today whilst I was eating, it was that good. It looks like a greasy spoon if you pass it on the road, but it’s not! It’s on a par with very good pub grub, and it’s really clean inside, as is the kitchen which I passed on the way to use the bathroom.
