This is becoming very much a favourite for us. We have started phoning the day before to reserve produce to collect the next day. We have a quick once round the shop to see if there is any new products to add to our order consisting of 1/2 lb steak pies for my father in law who just loves them, 1 lb steak pies for ourself along with apple crumbles, scones, short bread to a total of £78, worth every penny. Then we go into the restaurant for lunch. Both of us are soup lovers so we settled for potato and leek to start, then my wife ordered a g f ham and cheese toastie, I opted for a cheese and onion toastie with coleslaw on the side. To wash it down the wife had a cappucino, I settled for a diet irn bru. We were both well satisfied set up for the rest of the day. A worthwhile trip. Would recommend to anyone and will definitely be back.

We had a look around the shop first selecting some home baking and steak pies. We have had the steak pies before and would find it difficult to beat jamesfield for flavour. Then we went into the restaurant for lunch. We both had lentil soup to start. Then I had cheese and onion toasties with coleslaw on the side. Madam had gluten free bread with ham and cheese toastie. To finish we had some home baking. Would recommend to anyone and will definitely return.

Nice food for starters but such a long wait for our main (40 mins) that I had to eventually ask waiter where it was. Suspect they had forgotten us. Main came quickly after that but was not very hot which made me think it had been sitting all that time and not brought out to us till we complained. Salt and pepper chicken was far too salty. To the point of being inedible. Awful. Sadly won’t be back .

Basic Food like omelettes were ok but I’m afraid the rest wasn’t tasty or good value . Mushroom stroganoff , spicy chicken and deserts other than plain food weren’t worth re-ordering. We all left a lot . . The crumble fruit was sickly sweet and the topping was awful. No one asked us how the meal was except before we had chance to taste it. . Also, the number of instruction signs pinned around the cafe were not welcoming. Young staff did there best though. Loved the garden centre.

Went there yesterday, with family, to celebrate my granddaughter birthday, also mothers day, we waited around 30mins to get served, we ordered, when food arrived, firstly bowl of chips, which were soggy, n limp, needed to be fried longer, may I suggest, I then received steak pie, pasty was not great meat was nice n tender, again chips soggy, my granddaughter had tuna toasties n side salad, bread was soggy, my daughters meal had not arrived at table, when asked about it guy got machine n went in to kitchen, clearly had not told them complete order, he came over to explain there had been a error, n we would get meal shortly, this was a sweet chilly chicken wrap, in which cheese was not melted, it was like they had just grilled wrap n sent meal out, we were so disappointed as myself n granddaughter had finished our me before my daughters had arrived, we asked for the bill never offered to take money off, we payed n left dining room, looking at farm shop you could clearly see fruit n veg rotten, tomatoes, soft pears etc, we won't be back!!

We have visited here quite a few times , seems to be a hit & miss with the food. We had coffees which came lukewarm , my chocolate slice was nice, my partners cake was small and dry , we also waited a good while , even though there was only a few other people there. Honestly ? this cafe could be so much better , the staff always look like they havent had any sleep for weeks ! the lack of smiles and enthusiasim lets it down . as i said ..it could be a really great wee cafe !

Restaurant quite chilly on arrival. Paid £11 for a sandwich and small bowl of warm soup. Felt this was very overpriced for what I actually got and would have expected the soup to be piping hot. Then had a slice of Victoria sandwich. Could only eat the icing as the cake was so dry and hard. On paying I mentioned this to the waitress and actually tapped the cake with my fork so she could see (and hear) how dry it was. She apologised and said she would pass it on about the cake. I’m not one for causing a fuss but it would have been a nice gesture to have not been charged for the cake myself and my friend didn’t eat apart from the icing. The staff were very nice but I won’t be back.

Our visit today was really disappointing, we arrived at 1.30pm for lunch, it was quite busy but it looked like the majority of tables had already had their meal. We ordered two ham and cheese toasties with soup, the waitress advised there was no ham left but they could substitute it for bacon which we were delighted with. After 45 minutes we asked a member of staff if our order had been forgotten about and he apologised and explained that the kitchen was under staffed and they were behind with orders. Had we known this when we were seated we probably wouldn't have felt like we had been forgotten about for 45 minutes. The food arrived 5 minutes later and was really underwhelming. The lentil soup had lots of coriander and cumin in it, and the toasties were very basic, i expected better given it was a local farm shop with local produce. We spent £27.75 for two toasties, a small cup sized bowl of soup, a tea and a bottle of appletize juice. I can't fault the waiting staff, its not their fault they were understaffed and there was no sign of a manager looking after them or the restaurant. The waitress who gave us our bill appologised again for our wait and told us the same happened only the week before. We overheard numerous tables complaining about the length of time they waited too. We live locally having moved to the area last year, we had hoped of finding our new local lunch spot as the location and views are stunning. Super disappointed 😞 and feeling heart sorry for the waiter/waitress having to deal with unsatisfied customers through no fault of their own.

Found this on Facebook and thought to give it a visit. The first thoughts were , it's not as big as I was expecting , there was a good array of stuff to look at, the Christmas part was ok . We then went to the restaurant, the food was delicious and filling the little shop within was really good too. Bought a cake to go and again we were not disappointed very nice. Overall, good value for money

We were too early for lunch so we opted for the Breakfast instead. The waitress was pretty miserable. When the breakfast came the bacon was so hard you could use it as shoe leather, pitiful sausage was tasteless as was the black pudding. tattie scone was not very good either. I would say I have had better breakfast in a greasy spoon than in Jamesfield. Not once were we asked how everything was. After having had a lovely lunch here on Sunday I wont be venturing back.

We have been many times for coffee and cake and the cakes are amazing! However we came with the grandkids for lunch and it was awful! The chips were enormous wedges which I think had been cooked then left on the side in the kitchen. They were soggy and cold!!!!! The Coronation Chicken sandwich was on lovely brown bread but it was very much Hunt the chicken! There was 80 per cent curry sauce, very little chicken! Trying to save money? We won't have lunch here again.

Not our first visit here but definitely our last. We've tried a few times with Jamesfield but they are simply uninterested in improving anything about their restaurant. The staff are pleasant enough but not particularly attentive and move with no efficiency at all. When we arrived, the restaurant wasn't busy and we were told by three members of staff that they'd be with us in a minute, not one of these members of staff seated us, despite not continuing on to do another task. We ordered toasties that were advertised with a side salad for £8.75 which we felt was quite expensive but awaited the food. We waited fifteen minutes for the two most pathetic plates of food to be served (I say served, they were more thrown down in front of us). The toasties themselves were small and made on cheap, thin bread. I ordered the ham and cheese (thinking surely they can't get this wrong!) and was greeted with cheap, greasy cheese and cheap, plastic ham. The toastie was not cooked properly with the cheese on the inside being cold and still grated (nowhere near melted). My Mum ordered the brie and cranberry toastie which was also small with minimal filling (although hers was at least melted). The salad on the side was small, wilted and very sad looking. For £8.75 per plate, this food fell woefully short. We actually drove to the co-op, bought some bread rolls and made sandwiches at home for less than half the price which were much more appealing. There is nothing I can recommend about Jamesfield and hope that one day they take some of this feedback on board.

I’ve been a few times now and service always really slow. It’s normally well over 5 minutes before your order is taken, even when you’re the only table occupied, and well over 10 minutes before your order arrives (just tea and a biscuit). In the past the cake has been good but just really slow in getting to you.

I had booked a table for two for 12.30. We arrived early and were seated directly and given menus. A waitress arrived after about 5 minutes and took our order for two ciabattas with pulled pork, a latte and a hot chocolate. After 50 minutes of waiting I called a waitress. When she went to check on our order she discovered it had not been sent through (on a digital device used for taking orders). She eventually arrived with one order of bacon, brie and cranberry and 2 plates. We were just grateful to see some food. She then said one pulled pork would follow. Then we were told the first order should have been for some-one else. To cut a long story short, although I appreciate that staffing is a problem these days, I felt that if you cannot cope the number of covers should be limited. We were given an apology but not offered any discount. What we had was good but, after a total of 2 hours, we were not impressed. We will not be back.

Coffee shop chaotic and there doesn’t seem to be any system in terms of who is serving what table. Ordered 2 baked potatoes and 2 glasses of water - took forever and one baked potato was the wrong order, told the waiter who took it back but when it was brought back it was different but still the wrong order! I just ate it this time as the person I was with had almost finished her lunch. Told the girl about this when we were paying but she just shrugged, mumbled something and charged us full price. Also had to ask for our water 3 times. On the table of about 15 next to us one man never got his meal yet despite asking for it 3 or 4 times and eventually walked out. Shame cause setting is lovely and garden centre nice but don’t think we’ll be back.

this is such a lovely venue but everytime end up disappointed by the food. the service and the staff cannot be faulted and what a lovely view. I had the the nachos which were passable but the accompanying salsa sour cream and guacomole were not and ould guess came out of a catering pack. my partner had a tuna cheeses toastie which was quite expensive for what it was. plus it was slightly soggy the filling was lukewarm so the cheese had not started to melt. this was served with a teaspoon of garden salad. not great veggie options either on the flip side the coffee and cakes were delicious. we head here sometimes as the farm shop and garden centre are well worth a visit. I think if the cafe was better we would visit more often

So decided to give cafe a go as are frequent visitors and spenders at the garden centre where staff are informative, friendly and helpful = excellent service. Had been warned against going but decided to judge for ourselves- 1st mistake. Arrived around 2.45 waited around 91₩ mins for anyone to come over although there were 4 staff apparently doing little but chatting. Shown tour seat the another 5 mins when we had to get attention for a menu. Now about 3.10 told can't have food as don't serve after 3pm. UNBELIEVABLE No asset to scottish tourist trade. Anyway ordered tea and cakes a further 15mins later before they arrived. Both tea and cakes excellent. I could go on about the table next to us getting food after we received our cakes on chatting g with them they stated they had waited over 45 mins for a toasties and a meal. They too were disgusted with service and lack of attention. Anyway then had to ctually stand up to attract attention for bill. Terrible experience.

I fully agree with the previous post. My husband and I have visited Jamesfield Restaurant on many occasions and have always enjoyed a delicious meal with excellent service. How different our visit was today. We were shown to our table and given a menu. We waited and waited for our order to be taken until eventually had to signal for someone to come to take our order. We ordered our meals and again had to wait an inordinate amount of time for the meals to arrive. In fact we had to wait so long that two members of staff came over unprompted to tell us our meals would be with us "in a couple of minutes". Sadly when the meals arrived they fell far short of what we expect from Jamesfield. I ordered the Sunday roast and while the potatoes were piping hot the veg was overcooked and cold and the roast beef and gravy was just lukewarm. The veg accompanying my husbands steak pie were also cold. When we finished our meal again we waited for someone to clear our table but sadly once more I had to attract someone's attention so that I could pay our bill. I must stress the staff were friendly but certainly not efficient. It will be a long time, if ever, before we are back.

We have visited this place several times and enjoyed but yesterday’s experience was really bad. Even allowing for Covid restrictions/impact etc this was dreadful. Two waitresses obviously overworked. We stood for 5 minutes before one paid any attention to us, only to have to wait another 20 to be shown to a table. We saw on arrival the place was quite quiet but several tables needed to be cleared....and that was still the case when we were finally given a table. Eventually a waitress came over and asked what we would like. We had not even been given a menu. Another long wait ensued. Menu delivered. Another long wait before the waitress finally responded to our gestures seeking attention. No apologies from her: in fact NOTHING. No small talk other than a claim they had been busy earlier (this was lunchtime). The meal itself was acceptable but again we waited ages after the meal before someone came to our table enabling us to settle the bill. Very disappointing experience. One makes allowances for upsets to the norm caused by Covid restrictions but there is absolutely no excuse for appalling service standards and staff who clearly regarded customers as an unwanted and unwelcome intrusion

We thought we would go to the garden centre first. It was alright, small and didn’t take up much time. We then walked across to the farm shop. There wasn’t actually that much here to be honest. I really was disappointed as there could be so much potential in a site like this. There were very few visitors to the farm shop. The cafe looked nice but it was empty too so we bought an ice cream and headed home. There is plenty of room there for expansion and small local businesses should be encouraged into the farm shop. Even the beautiful pond where the ducks and chickens are, it needs a vision. Maybe if it improves I will go back

We ended up here on a rainy day because the cafe in Abernethy was closed. The foyer is warmer than the cafe because of all the fireplaces in there. Service was slow and the girl who served us was quite cheeky, appearing without a notepad to take our order, saying she would remember our order. Our order was visibly on the counter waiting to be brought to us for several minutes whilst staff milled around in an otherwise almost empty restaurant chatting to each other. A small pot of tea cost 2.60 and you had to add your own teabag. Unprofessional staff in a cold atmosphere. The place has potential but we will not be visiting again.

Now I have been a vegetarian for over 30 years when cheese salads were all that were offered, however nowadays the choice is extensive. I have had many veggie burgers over the years but the one I was given today was the worst I have ever had. Two bites were more than enough, it was disgusting looking at it and the taste was worse. I informed the excellent young lad , when asked. that it was one of the worst I had ever tasted. He said he would inform the kitchen. No further response forthcoming or a reduction on bill. Saturday morning and the sun is shining, an ideal opportunity to visit a garden centre, especially as we had a recommendation from friends, we chose to come to “Jamesfield”.The garden centre was our first point of contact where staff provided a warm welcome and allowed us to peruse and to have a general look around. It was around 9.00am when we visited so things were quiet with few customers but it was good to see all of the staff actively preparing plants for the day. We made our purchases and departed across the car park to the farm shop and restaurant to have a browse. We did walk through the shop and knew we would take some time to have another look on our departure. As we approached the restaurant which was light filled from the huge windows to the front we were approached by a member of restaurant staff who guided us to a table beside the windows where the views were spectacular, our server firstly asked if we would like to have breakfast which we declined, deciding to order tea / cake and a scone. The server was attentive and was interested that we had been to the garden centre. Within a few minutes whilst we were still discussing the panoramic view our tea and scone arrived, the scone was warm to the touch and was accompanied by 2 portions of butter and a small pot of raspberry jam, invitingly well presented and fresh to taste and the cake was beautifully fresh and crumbly. I noted around us some patrons were having full breakfasts, probably a specialty, which looked as something we will prepare for on our next visit which will be soon. The pricing was fully credible and I measure this establishment as very good value for money, we will be back.

Dropped in for a coffee and cake while visiting their farm shop. We waited for ages for someone to take our order. We ordered two coffees and my wife had a slice of lemon cake and I had a scone. Again waited forever for it to arrive and the restaurant wasn't even that busy. The scone was fine but the lemon cake was tiny for £3.25 also, whoever had cut the cake had obviously been cutting banoffee pie beforehand with the same knife ad the lemon slice had that down the side. Still no sign of our coffees. I had to remind the waitress that we were still waiting on out coffees, by this time we had finished eating and was sitting for ages when finally the coffee arrived. By that time we were fair scunnered so drank half the coffee, paid the bill and left. I don't know what is so difficult to serve coffee at the same time as the cake rather than some time after it. We have been here before and it has been good, but not anymore, I can't spend over an hour waiting before everything finally arrives. We should have left after 40 minutes as we almost did and went somewhere else.

We have visited this place several times in the past. We love the location, the views and the food is good. However, today was a massive let down. We visited early afternoon. The place was quite busy and the two waitresses were clearly not coping. Tables lay uncleared and we waited ages for two scones and coffee, with no apology when they finally arrived. I see recent reviews have also been critical of service: this is a great pity. Ok I acceptitmust be difficult to predict service requirements but we saw three chefs at the serving area at various times today, yet only two waiting staff. An imbalance which led to an unpleasant experience overall.

We often visit Jamesfield Garden Centre which is first class best we have ever been to. However, the farm shop which houses the restaurant which we stopped in the a bit of a late lunch. We were told on arrival that lunches had stopped but we thought we'd get something else, we were never shown a menu but we did ask if there was any chance of some soup which there was some lentil soup, it arrived cold so we sent it back but not even when warmed up did it improve things. I couldn't eat mine as it wasn't cooked properly the lentils were a bit firm and it didn't taste pleasant. We had ordered carrot cake which after a while were told had sold out and again we weren't told what we could have instead. We wont return to waste another £18. Not recommended. It is such a pity as with the right team this could be a real goldmine but lack of effort shows.

Went to a primrose festival at the garden centre and decided to have some lunch at the restaurant next door, it was very busy with cyclists, Decided on the crispy battered haddock that was advertised, this piece of tasteless fish arrived and batter that was far from crispy and black chips that had been in the fat two long, do not think we will be back there.

The restaurant is part of a garden centre but is in a separate building with a collection of other interesting businesses. As for the restaurant part of the building in is at the rear of the farm shop. The menu is the usual fair in these places with very limited choice for a GF diet. In fact there is only various omelettes of fish and chips. I had the fish etc. well the fish had a batter that was very oily and the chips had a very soft texture, not too my liking. As for my other half she had the "creamy Piri Piri chicken it too was oily and not creamy. It was served with the same texture of chips and a salad. The srvice is very prompt and efficient.

The dining area is in a separate building to the garden centre so I would park outside here first if you want food then move to the bottom of the carpark to visit the garden centre especially if you are infirm or are in a wheelchair. To get to the cafe area you walk through a porch area which is advertising log and electric fires and stoves. Then through a shop which sells the usual farmhouse wares. Toilets are to the right as you enter shop area. We got a table (we didn't pre-book and it was quite busy, but there were a good number of tables available). A server came over and took our order. The food came out soon after. My fish and chips were excellent, hand cut proper chips cooked perfectly with a decent sized bit of fish with crispy batter. The peas were served in a separate small ramakin dish on the plate which kept them warm throughout the meal. My wife had ordered the soup sandwich deal, it was a nice sized bowl and the sandwich (2 off) had a generous filling with a side salad. The soup (lentil), however, was a bit thick and needed thinned down and a bit more seasoning added, the sandwich because it contained coronation chicken it didn't need the bread to be buttered. But don't let these two minor points put you off as overall the food was great and both plates were polished off. A special mention to the servers (sorry I didn't get your names but you were working the afternoon of Sun.17th feb 19) who were polite, prompt and well presented throughout our visit, well done you are a credit the cafe.

I have had lunch and coffee and cake here several times with different people although the staff are very pleasant we have had various soups and they all lacked flavour seeming to be without a good stock base. Also on two occasions the cakes have been stale which is a shame, compared to other cafes beside or within local garden centres the food is not of the same quality.

Stopped whilst in the area visiting family. We both had the Lentil Soup which tasted superb. The Toastie and Sandwich we also had were great. The bread was nice and fresh. The girl that served us was very polite and professional making it an enjoyable visit. We also enjoyed looking round the farm shop and being able to buy organic potatoes to take back home.

We have visited on a number of occasions when in the area; usually for a quick snack and have always enjoyed it. The views from the dining room are amazing. Decided to return with friends for a Christmas lunch but sadly were more than disappointed, in addition to their regular menu there was also their Christmas menu but only on three of the four place settings; when the waitress came to take our order, it took her forever to write down our choices ! 3 of us wanted the turkey and the other order was the steak pie, but instead of simply writing “3 x turkey” and “1 x steak pie” it appeared she was writing out each order separately; this is what took such a long time. Other restaurants either have a numbering system or simply have the menu with them and a simple “tick” against each item ordered; she also wanted to know at the start of our meal which dessert we wanted; this is not usual practice; usually you only order dessert after the main meal it could be that someone orders a heavier dessert then having had the main meal feel they would prefer something lighter, the opposite could also be the case. We hadn’t even finished our main meal {the dinner plates had not been heated so the food was getting cold, in fact one of the portions of stuffing was cold at the start of the meal} then the desserts were brought to the table!! So they had to be sent back until we were finished our main meal. We felt we were being hounded into ordering drinks as we were asked on at least three occasions what drinks we wanted in spite of saying at the very start we didn’t want alcoholic drinks, just water. In spite of it being a festive lunch there was a decided lack of festive ambience. Disappointed that tea/coffee was extra; usually these are included in the price. Please, Jamesfield, have a look at these comments and try to improve the service for next year.

I recently visited here with a couple of friends for coffee and cake. It was my first visit but it definitely won’t be my last. It is a really lovely place. The cafe was really warm and welcoming with beautiful views. We sampled a few of the cakes and they were gorgeous. The shop had lots of home grown produce and unusual gifts. It was a definite wee ‘gem’ and we will most definitely be back!!

I have been a couple times now and have never been disappointed: the food is great (especially the macaroni) and really lovely staff. The ones that stand out are Tom, Kirstie and Imogen (apologise if names are not quite correct) they have all been very accommodating and helpful when they have served me! I will definitely be returning!

My wife and I have been visiting this cafe and shop on and off over a number of years - we live fairly locally - and, to be honest, it has sometimes left a wee bit to be desired. However - the standards do really appear to have improved considerably of late and on a visit for lunch today (we both had the delicious roast beef special) we really could not fault it in any way - good prompt service by efficient well trained friendly staff and really good food making this one of the best garden center cafe/restaurants in the area. The garden center has always been good with friendly knowledgeable staff but it too appears to be getting even better with a wonderful range of well cared for plants and lots of interesting bits and pieces in the adjoining garden shop. The shop attached to the cafe is, however, the one area that lets it down slightly with a fairly poor selection of products and not really terribly interesting - could really be a lot better and needs to come up to the standard of the cafe and nursery. All in all - a great place to visit and may the improvements continue.

Lovely place, cosy/friendly feeling in the restaurant. We arrived for an early lunch and was surprised that there was only 1 other table, but as we had our 2year old we weren’t too fussed. Play area for kids is such a bonus! Adults eat, kids play! As it was quiet there was only 1 young girl waitress, but for some reason it still took a while to receive our food. This wasn’t a huge issue tho as the food is still delicious anyway. 100% returning!

Visited last weekend with family members to find the place very poorly organised, slow and not of very good quality. Our table of 6 had to move due to some very selfish, (and dirty), cyclists who gathered on mass with little regard for others. By that time we had already been waiting 'a long' time just for drinks. let alone food. Despite 2/3 attempts to find out the problem and get some progress the staff seemed unable to help, yes apologetic but nothing more. Eventually (45 mins at least) drinks started arriving randomly. Then eventually the hot snacks arrived and sadly the quality was v poor.

Had breakfast here this morning and what a nice place to be. The view from the restaurant is quite stunning and the service matched the view. I had the small farmers breakfast which was really nice and all freshly cooked. Also good coffee served all with a smile. The farm shop stocks a wide range of products which are mostly local and organic. We will visit again next time we are in the area.

The special today was cheese and onion quiche with "organic" new potatoes and salad. The quiche was very poor - served cold it seemed like it had been in the fridge all night. The base pastry looked uncooked and the filling was like rubber. Certainly not up to the usual Jamesfield standards. There was also a severe lack of salt on the potatoes. Having been here a few times and really enjoyed it. this was a very disappointing visit. When we paid the bill the waiter asked was everything OK and when we replied "not really" he just said he would let James know. I assume this is the chef.

I've had numerous meals and drinks in The Gordon Highlander and always found them to be very good. With one exception. Out of all the Wetherspoon's the only one I'd complain about is the Inverurie one. The reason is the chips are always Luke warm at best. Never hot. A shame really as I'd give them 5 stars otherwise for food and drink.
