Great tasting curry, very friendly staff. Would 100% recommend it.

Busy restaurant food was nice but service rubbish. 5 people ordered 12 items was served 11. When we said to the waiter we was missing a rice he said 2 minutes but never returned. If the staff had bothered to do a meal check we would have brought it again to their attention but no meal check.

New to the area, me and my partner tried it a few weeks ago as it’s our new local and can honestly say it’s the best curry either of us have had! It’s a lovely atmosphere inside- even though we’ve only had takeaway it’s nice when you enter the restaurant and staff are very friendly. Our new favourite Indian takeaway/resturant by far!

My friend and myself visited this restaurant.Upon leaving I was violently sick in the car park and as I type this my friend is throwing up at his house. Both feel rough and would avoid this restaurant like the plague

I don’t like to admit this as my mate dines out on it (excuse the pun) too much, but this curry house is great. It’s a bit weird that it a pub in one end and a curry house in the other….. but the food is mega and the service is spot on.

Take away We have been coming here for many years but sadly of recent times the standard has changed for the worse The food used to be amazing and if not one of the best around Last few visits over the past six months it’s been in decline and last take away I got the chicken tikka in my mixed grill was undercooked to the point of being medium rare, unfortunately I didn’t see the colour as the red coating masked the pink fleshy chicken, it wasn’t until I chewed it that I noticed was raw beyond the outer coating Generally the sauces aren’t as nice as they used to be, the prawns aren’t the same large ones the used to make the tandoori king prawn with and the lamb on mixed grill also inedible Please if the restaurant is reading this. Have a word with the chef and go back to the old day’s quality

Table booked for 6pm (total mahem) when we arrived told to go to bar 20 minutes later table ready right at the door where many people queuing for take aways (not a very nice experience) poppadoms arrived. 1hr 20mins later main meal all rushed as people waiting for tables commenting on how busy it was. Not a very nice experience had to leave literally could not deal with this to enjoy a desert and coffee.

It's a very nice restaurant with a full menu and a few different largers.

Great little restaurant Excellent Indian food.

We were travelling for a family wedding and staying at a Travelodge nearby. We saw that they were still open by the time we reached Dunmow, so we stopped in to order some food. Considering it was nearly closing time, we were able to order takeaway. We sat down whilst we waited for our food to be ready. All the staff members were really lovely, they all came to say hello, seeing as they are our Bengali brothers/uncles. As they got our order packed, they even gave us complimentary poppadoms, sauces, mushroom rice, dhal, and 2 cans of coke. Much more than what we originally ordered, and they also added a 15% discount. We were blown away by their generosity. We loved all the food items we ordered, especially the duck biryani and king prawn starter. We really enjoyed our meal. We'll never forget the love and hospitality we received that night. If we're ever near Dunmow, we'll definitely visit again.

I live in Hong Kong and we have ridiculously good Indian restaurants so maybe that’s affected this review, but the samosa was probably the most disappointing I’ve had, and the madras, which should be spicy obviously, was more akin to an Italian tomato sauce. Zero spice. Just felt like I was eating a fusion British italian / Indian. The mango chutney was also not up to par, nor the pilau rice which was extremely standard. Came here because of the reviews, but forgot the Brits don’t like flavour…

We had a takeaway this time, but it was exceptional.

Incredible food. Great ambience. Beautiful restaurant. Very rustic and not typical of an Indian restaurant but it works well. We had starters and mains and everything was delicious. Waiters were very attentive and food was well priced. Would definitely come again if in the area.

Excellent food, service and 5 stars all round ..

Both times I've been here I've had to wait for my pre booked table. First time was 30 minutes and 2nd time was only 5 minutes. Still strange since we booked in advance both times. Otherwise great the food has been tasty both times.

This was our first visit for a takeaway not to eat in. We ordered via the app and collected. There was some confusion over the bread and we were in-fact given extra to what we had ordered. The servings were generous and the starters were good, but the mains were on the whole bland and under-seasoned with all of the lamb dishes chosen being very tough and gristly. To top it all my husband is still suffering a stomach upset 4 days after, something that hasn't happened before. We won't be visiting again.

Located near stanstead Airport on the way to Braintree. I went there for the first time ,and expecting a pub with pub food, but i was very surprised to find that it was an indian restaurant inside a pub. I ordered lunh from an extensive menue, and when it arrived i found the food very fresh, and of a very high quality. The staff were polite, and friendly. I will certainly go there again.

One of the best Indian restaurants I’ve been to.

Wonderful food at a relatively inexpensive price we took a family of six to Jalsa just a few days ago and it only costs us about 130 inclucing 2 bottles of wine. The waiters are friendly and the service is pretty nice served up in a really old English-Style, thatched-roofed restaurant. It's really quite a good bargain for an Indian-style restaurant.

Overall great, but in recent months, the chicken in dishes has become awful. Chewy and horrible.

Had a lovely meal at Jalsa Ghar in Great Dunmow. It was very busy when we arrived and had to wait at the bar before being seated. The chicken shashlik was very nice. Staff are very friendly and the restaurant has won many awards over the years. Booking is recommended. They have a car park but you may not get a space during busy periods. Expect to pay £15-£20 per head for food.

Booked for a table of three at 8pm, told to have a drink at the bar, after 20 mins another group of three shown to a table before us, then told table would be ready soon, after 35 mins gave up and went to leave, told “just wait another 5mins” - complete chaos and nobody seeming to care so we left (shame as we drove 30 mins to the restaurant and it used to be a favourite). Went to Rubys in Stortford who seated us within 5 mins and had great food.

Possibly the worst Indian food I’ve eaten. Curries we’re insanely oily, chicken over cooked. Dahl was bland and lentils cooked to death. Nan bread was stale to the point of being inedible. Red flags when the menu is 10 pages long and the restaurant is also a pub but we were desperate for a meal - do yourself a favor and go hungry.

First visit here and I was impressed. The service was good and everything ordered tasted very good indeed.

We visited Jalsa Ghar after a tiring flight. The food that was served was fantastic. The people who served had the right attitude. Smiling and served us well. Thankyou and we will definitely be coming back in future.

I had a take way , food was ok and warm nothing yet special , I still stand by my previous review of the take way but I have eaten twice in the restaurant and is very good food with an honest service and good price. That is why gone from 3* to 5*

Nice place. Building is good to see, very old and traditional. Fair price and normal quality food. Pub is on the other side and nice is well.

Thank you Jalsa Ghar.. We have lived around here for around 18 months, and we have struggled to find an Indian that even came close to those where we used to live. I honestly think we have tried nearly all of them, and every one missed the mark by a mile. Finally we have found the one, the food was perfect, two dishes ordered couldn't be faulted. 100% the best around, and thankfully our new Indian has been found.

Pleasant meal, rather than a really good one. The menu is relatively Essex-friendly, as is are the spices. You won't have a bad time here, or have your taste buds over stretched.

The food here is bloody lovely, People travel for miles to eat here. The atmosphere is very friendly. Also do take away.

I don’t know how this place has been nominated for the British curry awards, the food that comes out of the kitchen is just microwaved/warmed up, cooked earlier in the day!! Low quality meat… my chicken was tough and fatty my daughters lamb came out cold in the middle, also it wasn’t lamb definitely MUTTON If you want a nice Indian meal please look else where! I have Indian twice a week and this is possibly the worstdisappointing as we came herbecause we saw that it was the only curry house in Essex nominated for a curry award Must survive off the curry awards promotions as they seem to really seem to advertise it massively AVOID THIS PLACE

Dated-looking establishment and mediocre service. Food was okay but it didn’t live up to the advertised ‘awards’-standard. Seemed to be busy with take-away orders so appears popular.

I would give the food 6 stars if I could. The Duck Tikka masala was phenomenal. Its hard to get duck spot on. With this chef it was done like it was nothing. Quick, efficient and good value for money. Go check it out yourself!

We left Dunmow 7 years ago so to revisit here was a real treat. Love the food here, which has always been worthy of the awards the restaurant has won. Zia and the team are really friendly and excellent hosts. If I had one criticism the table booked is hardly ever actually available whe you arrive.... often on busy nights we might not site down until 9pm which is difficult when you have children with you.... but the food is so good its worth the trip anyway

Consistently REALLY bad. Absolutely no idea why everyone local rates it. We’ve given it a few goes now and ordered different things; classics, their specials, mixture of sides and starters. All taste like school dinners - severely lacking seasoning and flavour. I don’t know what their chefs are smoking. Worst Indian I have encountered, anywhere, ever.

Very tasty and fast. pleasant service very reasonable prices. The service is excellent, taking into account her wishes. There are very spicy dishes and there are ordinary ones. I really liked the king prawns with pineapple in coconut sauce, who especially like the sweetish taste. the starters were all great too

We are so lucky to have this place locally. The food is so good, the meat is always tender and flavourful - not just spicy. The poppadoms and breads are fresh and lovely, the selection is impressive and all the staff are friendly and happy to check things. Free parking. Dogs permitted at 'pub' end. Bar well stocked. Lovely ambiance.

Disgusting service. Staff so rude and ignorant. Bar service was shocking, pulling a pint was clearly too much effort, table service was even worse. Left within three minutes of being seated, did not want to eat anything served by such arrogant individuals.

My wife and I ate in here on Saturday, we had been advise to go early as they book out quickly. We where seated quickly and started with poppadums with a range of delicious accompaniments, I loved the lime pickle and my wife liked the coconut one. The menu had a wide range of options including Bangladeshi dishes. I loved the allergy guide on the menu as it took the stress out of ordering. We shared crispy, sweet and spicy Onion Bhaji, an Brinjal Bhajee (delicate aubergine dish); a Sardines Biran ( so filling), Chapatil and Shatkora Gosth. The lamb in the Shatkora Gosth was so tender it melted in the mouth hitting your palette with a spicy rich flavour, We did not make it to desert. I enjoyed a glass of house white, which was light and refreshing. Thank you for a wonderful meal. Lynne & Annie

Food is good but service wasn't. Halfway through meal then get your rice. And there's one bloke you can't understand a word he say. They have him taking orders. It's hard work just to order.

Very poor, got a takeaway mixed grill ridiculous small portion, been going for years will not be using again. A shame 😔

Excellent service and great tasting food

The main reason for choosing this Indian restaurant was because our dog was allowed in the pub section. However, the food was excellent and the service was very friendly, so we were delighted.

Slightly mixed feelings today (busy Saturday service). Long wait (45 mins) for pre-booked table. Bar staff seemed slightly inept (sorry!). Once seated, good service and nice food. House wine is decent and good value, which is refreshing and worth bearing in mind if you are fed up paying over the odds for nasty wine like me!

Simply amazing. The food tasted amazing. I ordered a mild curry as I can’t handle too much spice and it was simply delicious, so much flavour in the curry. Great portion sizes too with plenty of meat and also sauce. Lovely atmosphere, we were seated straight away and the waiter was also very polite. Nothing was ever too much for them. Will definitely return again!
