It’s now Meaks. Some serious efficiency improvement would benefit this pleasant cafe. For example, customers queue at the front desk to place their order, but this person (singular) also makes the tea/coffee. So the queue gets priority but at the direct expense of the serving of tea/coffee. There has to be a better way of managing this. We waited 20 mins for a pot of tea for 2. It’s not that difficult. Tea Pot. Hot water & tea bag. Cups. Saucers. Milk. How difficult is that. I could make it in the time it’s taken to write this. Mentioned it to a waitress and the reply was ‘we’re busy’. Yes I could see that. This is not a complaint about the staff. It’s an observation on inbuilt inefficiency. Which could and should be sorted.

A sweet little spot for breakfast or lunch. Good espresso drinks (excellent lattes) and a number of breakfast options. We stayed at an AirBNB across the street and had breakfast here on 3 mornings. Had the porridge with fruit one morning and egg dishes the other two. All were great. You order at the counter, then grab a table to be served. Very friendly vibe.

Covid compliant. Jack’s has implemented excellent covid compliance. Greeted at door asked to hand sanitise and shown to table. Staff friendly and wearing visors/masks. Laminated menu and order taken at table. Even the pens used to fill in contact tracing details if you don’t have the app are cleaned before next usage. Made such a pleasant change to meet with consistent compliance to make the experience as safe as possible. A lot of other establishments could learn a lot from the staff working here. Well done.

We came to Jacks yesterday as a family, my dad and my sister and me. Walked from Chellaston to Melbourne and called in for lunch. Upon arrival outside a polite request to wait for staff and a bell in case they have not seen you. Someone greeted us, asked us to sanitise our hands and guided us to a table. The waitress explained the COVID-19 guidelines. As we were sitting we removed our face coverings. We ordered food, I had soup and my dad had the ploughman’s and my sister Quiche. Food was served promptly and looked so good, tasted even better. 3 clean empty plates/bowls. In this pandemic it’s difficult to go out and feel safe, Jacks have this covered - WE felt safe! Watching staff clean used tables and chairs fully wiping them down and putting a sign to reflect it’s done- really brilliant! I also think that the staff have a great way of controlling the customer with the guidelines some places it must be hard for staff to feel they can enforce the rules of the establishment. (Staff at Jacks were super friendly and polite yet you listens and followed the instruction). When my joints recover from yesterday’s walk we can’t wait to come back! Oh and the CAKE AWAYS worked a treat for the kids back at home! 😋

This was a nice little cafe and I would be giving our visit an excellent rating if it hadn't been for the overbaked spud that was served. Ordering baked potato is always a gamble, so I was keeping my fingers crossed for a 'fluffy' one, as described on the menu. Sadly it wasn't to be, the poor spud having been reduced to the starchy, mushy quality I'd hoped to avoid. It was a bit of a shame, as the accompanying salad, dressing and coleslaw were fresh, tasty and nicely presented.

We popped in to Jacks for lunch after a visit to Calke Abbey. It was lively, warm and welcoming for our first time there. The kids ham sandwich was scrumptious, the ham was moist and the bread fresh and gooey! We also had the crushed avocado with poached egg, bacon & avocado wrap. Both were delicious and the salaed was fresh and tasty. For the focus of the lunch - the large slice of gluten free, vegan chocolate cake was superb and apparently made with crushed avacado! The cake was finished off quickly and we did not notice the avacado!! We will certainly go back again when in the area and explore the menu further! I was just passing through Melbourne and had heard wonderful things about Jack's so thought I'd stop by. And boy am I glad I did! The experience started upon hearing the hubbub as I stepped through the door, and trust me, there's no better sound than the hubbub of a busy coffee shop as it's always a sign that it's going to be good - a quiet coffee shop rarely exceeds low expectations!A warm welcome from the ladies on the counter and a quick browse through the menu had me deciding on the muffin with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs - an inspired choice as it turns out, the eggs were cooked to perfection, just the perfect scrambleyness! The coffee was silky and smooth - it was almost like looking in the mirror it was that delightful! ;-) And who can resist a slab of millionaires shortbread? Not I!Nice and unhurried, even though the place was busy, with a gaggle (or whatever the collective term is) of cyclists arriving just before I left, obviously this place is a hit with the locals as well as those from further away.If only I could give more than 5 stars, because this place fully deserves it! I had scrambled eggs, toast and tomatoes and my husband had bacon, poached egg, beans and toast. We choose our table and our tea came over straight away. It's a lovely place to while away the morning hours, reading the newspaper and sipping hot tea. When our food came out the presentation was lovely and you could tell straight away that their produce is fresh. This premises has undergone several changes in recent years but this cafe is certainly the most welcoming and pleasant business there in that time. The decor is certainly up to date and I would guess the wall paper to be Laura Ashley? The glass covered table top decoration shows care and interest with decorations wall displays are attractive and informative - proudly showing the local supplies to the cafe's provisions. Cakes tempt you at the counter and a wide range of beverages are on offer. The cakes and coffee and delicious! Lunches are reported to be very good too. Loyalty cards are available too. Everything is as clean as you would expect it to be, staff are friendly and brisk with their service. Toilets are remarkable and offer basic necessities that one may need from time to time; the baby change area also provides basic necessities should a parent be 'caught out' with baby requirements. Seating is plentiful but the cafe does get very busy. Pleasingly, this cafe is used by a wide range of ages; couples having huge cooked breakfasts alongside mums meeting with babies. Mobility is not a problem for pushchairs - I counted four in there this morning with space not being compromised in the slightest. Wheelchair may be a little trickier. No outside tables could be found, but this cafe is fronted by a narrow pavement which faces directly onto a busy road. A very good visit this morning, I am looking forward to my next trip when I hope to be able to order a round of toast. All good - thank you.

When out coffee and cake was brought to the table we said we had moved as it was so cold due to the door being left open on such a cold day. We were given a very back handed apology didn't we realise it was awkward to close the door with full hands. Why the back door couldn't have been used is beyond me it was only a 4 seconds further away! As paying customers we were made to feel a complete nuisance it totally spoilt our day which was a treat out. We didn't finish our coffee and cake which was an absolute waste of money. The only reason we didn't was because it was Monday and everywhere else in Melbourne was shut. We got the scowl again when the menus were brought over. The menu, to be fair, was perfectly fine and we chose two baguettes with salad and homemade coleslaw. We would have chosen ploughmans but they didn't seem friendly enough to change the meat items to cheese (have never understood why they make a ploughmans non veggie!) The order taking was really painful. A tablet was being used and it took way longer than it would have done if they'd just used pen and paper. To be fair, the food was delicious. The coleslaw was lovely, the baguettes fresh and the fillings very good and tasty. The milkshakes were great too. Shame the welcome was so unfriendly, as the food was good.

Had a great Ploughmans Lunch here with coffee. Choice of inside shop or outside in courtyard to eat/drink. Ploughmans Lunch was sizeable and served on a large roof slate.Menu was quite extensive and offered far more than just cakes/sweets and drinks. Food was presented very well and was of a high standard. Definitely recommended.

What a lovely little gem! Delicious fresh food..... We visited Jack's before going to Chalke Abbey and I'm SO pleased we did.... If I'm ever in the area I'll 100% be returning. Joules and all the staff at Jack's were so kind and had great customer service skills. Joules was very helpful and had a chat with us which makes all the difference! I loved how you could pick and choose what you wanted to eat... The portion sizes are not measly... My boyfriend who is a big rugby lad enjoyed the salad and coleslaw as well as his tasteful panini! So thank you.... We all had a lovely time.... Hope to be back soon. Everyone is doing a fantastic job so keep it up... Thanks again... Very happy customers :-)

Dropped in for lunch on spec on Friday lunchtime - busy, but they were coping well. Great ploughmans: tasty Cheddar and Stilton, good ham (not even slightly damp), nice brown bloomer bread (plenty of butter thank you, no rationing here), Branston and silver cocktail onions, with fresh appetising salad leaves. It was very good. We liked that you pay on ordering - I know it means you may have to pay again if you order a coffee or a dessert later, but it prevents the hunting around and cross-questioning to produce an arbitrary addition at the end.

Me and my hubby stopped here for a bite to eat after reading reviews on Tripadvisor and we were not disappointed. I had the cheeseboard and a big fat slice of cake but the cheeseboard filled me up that much I had to take the cake with me and have later. I would recommend Jack's for a spot of lunch. I was also nice to sit in the courtyard on a nice day.

On the recommendation of a local, we chose to have our lunch in this attractive cafe. We both chose goats cheese quiche from the Daily Specials on the blackboard, It was served warm, with salad and home made slaw. It was really delicious, served quickly, and good value for money. There were more dishes on the board which may have tempted us, as well as platters and sandwiches on the regular menu.

Working in the cafe industry, it's great to come to another cafe and feel like your getting something a little different not just your basic menu. Love the breakfast mix and match menu as I can choose what I want on my plate rather then having to ask about changing it all the time. Lovely cakes and coffee. Living in Melbourne it's a brilliant cafe to visit on my days off. And it's right on my door step. Perfect!!!

This cafe was recommended by gentleman who has his breakfast there every day. The cafe was busy 'good sign' but not over crowded. There is also outside seating in a nice courtyard. The coffee was very tasty and the cake was a decent portion and not too sweet. I had two coffees as the small cup is not enough, I think the slightly larger cup should be the small cup. Just a thought. Some people were having a main meal and they were a decent portion and looed very niveService treated us as locals very efficient and relaxing.

Just had lunch here. Lovely food (ploughman's, one with gluten free bread) and great coffee. Partner does not have good eyesight so a joy to visit an eatery which is light and airy. Haven't visited for some time due to the previously mentioned noisy children and pushchair invasion. There was a pushchair today, tucked out of the way, and some very well behaved children. All in all a happy experience, good food and pleasant and quick service. Thank you.

Myself and many of my friends used to frequent this place weekly until the pushchair notice went up. However, we now all feel too uncomfortable to come in for a coffee even when at quiet times there is enough room for our pushchairs.I'm sure you can empathize with us and understand it is not realistic to take a sleeping baby out of a pushchair just so you can enjoy a coffee. Also you may appreciate that a pushchair is a very expensive piece of equipment to leave outside if there is no space left available inside.I believe a few inconsiderate mums have spoilt this for the rest of us and we are all being made to feel unwelcome. This situation could have been managed better by simply advising customers on arrival, rather than putting up a notice for every customers to see.I have since been in with my pushchair and have overheard comments from other customers (relating to me bringing in the pushchair and the notice) even though it was not busy enough to justify removing it.I feel its about time we speak up, however judging by some of the previous defensive management responses I'm afraid this will fall on deaf ears!I do hope you take this critique kindly and listen actively to what your customers are saying as we do all miss the lovely coffee and food that you offer and i would still promote that your standards of service are usually very high.

I would just like to say a few things after my visit the other day and after reading some of the reviews.. I have two small children and a pushchair and I was made very welcome here and yes I did put my pushchair out side as I could see it was a small place and it was very busy.To have a load of pushchair in at one time is both unfair to other people and to the business....they shouldn't have to ask or put a sign up to ask mothers to be thoughtful about this.....You as a parent should realise how much room they take up. There are high chairs and chairs for little ones to sit on and if they are really young there is your lap....... It disappoints me that people don't have consideration and and feel the need to post negative remarks because they were asked politely to create space for other user's......the staff should not have to ask.....C ome on mothers they welcome my boys with open arms and we don't need to be told to be considerate....even let him use the till to pay for his lunch....nursing mothers are welcome.....What more do you want from them!!!!!!. Both food and staff were amazing as always..Thank you lady's. Rant over xx

I met a friend and had lunch here and must say that the jacket potato with roasted vegetables, goats cheese and salad was delicious and extremely good value for money. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the café was very clean. I welcome the fact that large groups of children are no longer visiting as this used to make it very difficult to have a conversation with who you were sitting with as they were often very noisy and did not seem to be asked to keep quiet by the parents. I was shocked on previous visits that the parents were not concerned that their children running around the café would get hurt with all the hot food and drinks being carried to the tables. I am also glad that pushchairs are kept outside, I would have thought that both of these issues were health and safety issues anyway. Brilliant lunch, will return again very soon.

Most often I go by the opinion, if you have something nice to say, say it to the establishment... Which i do, however Jacks, in my opinion, deserves a five star review as well. I've been coming here for my coffee, breakfast and/or lunch fix for some time.... And it always, ALWAYS, lives up to great expectation, I have never been disappointed. The menu it's brilliant! Everything you expect AND more! Combined with its ever varied specials board, you can tell the cooks put a lot of attention to detail into their work every day, without fail. The staff are lovely! I'm always welcomed, warmly and efficiently. I understand when they are busy it may take a minute or so for food and drink to come to your table, but trust me, it is worth it! The food is fresh and local, it's not "fast food", and it's always washed down will with one of their coffees, which in my opinion, are the best around. Thank you Jacks and team for always giving me a mid week treat to look forward too!

I had to go over to the lady at the counter and ask her to wipe our sticky and crumby table. My friend and I (who had her son) ordered a drink and a cake. We had to leave the pushchair out the back, which we felt uncomfortable doing. The cakes were very dry and tasteless and we felt that they were overpriced. Disappointed :(

Called in Jack's cafe today with my grandson. I felt very upset as it is obvious this cafe does not like children. I had read the notice in the window regarding pushchairs and young children, not too many in one go! On arriving I asked which table would be ok , having a child and buggy in tow. I was told the pushchair could go outside in the courtyard at the back. I asked about insurance in case it got stolen as from the cafe you cannot see the courtyard. So I chose a table for 4 with room at the wall for the pushchair. I was told by a member of staff I should not sit at a table of 4 as we were 2. If I stay, I may have to share. The way it was said was with anger. So off I go to the table for 2. I felt most uncomfortable, the staff are miserable. My table was quickly cleared before I had got up to leave. It is very expensive and you expect better service. Remember, I am the customer. As I was leaving an elderly couple arrived. They sat at a table for 4. I bet they did not get any comments from the staff. Why not move the table in the window to make room for pushchairs . You serve a children's menu, make it more friendly.
