Such a cute pub! We came for a meal and bottle of wine, the fire was roaring and the staff really friendly. We had roast lamb and a bottle of wine, was the perfect atmosphere. Would definitely come back! Oh almost forgot the sticky toffee pudding! Wow! So yummy!

With regret, I so agree with Paul, August 2024. We have been coming here for years, throughout the seasons, and have always enjoyed everything about the place. Location, staff, food, drink, fellow guests, general ambience, but not last weekend Didn’t recognise any of the staff, and somehow atmosphere didn’t feel the same. Service OK, but food definitely below par - “we have a new chef “ was response when question about food was asked. That shouldn’t be the customers problem. The menu seemed much reduced, as did the portion size and general food quality, with the prices inversely proportional !! I sincerely hope this was just a blip, as we want to continue coming to the Jack and Jill. Haven’t read anything about change of ownership etc, so hope things will return to normal ASAP

Low-key run friendly pub with massive car park; warm welcome on arrival; good range of staff of all ages who want you to have a pleasant time in their company; I’d say homely food on a short-ish menu with quite a number of specials every day so that’s exciting if you like surprises. Good range of beers and Silly Moo cider on offer and you sit at a range of higgledy-piggledy tables with mis-matched chairs – all rather charming.

Friendly service from the barman in this old fashioned pub with a wide and varied menu. Not many like that left now. If you want some pub grub with generous portions and a good beer then go for it. The food won't blow your socks off - but neither will the prices.

The ham in the ham, egg and chips was mediocre. Chips seem to be only chunky chipos, which I do not like. Child's Sausages, Bean and chips was average quality and cost £9.20. Large portion of chicken, leek and ham pie with mash and veg cost £15.70. The service was good. No one had fish so I cannot comment on those dishes. Sorry no photos.

We chose the place after looking at the website, and seeing it had a garden (though on the day it was too wet and cold to use it.) Quite old fashioned deco. rThe food is good enough though the website is misleading when it comes to kids meals "from £6.20" as it turns out they are £9.40 or £9.40 not inc dessert. Seating not comfortable, bench seat was too low for the table. There were cushions but we gave them to the kids so they could reach the table on their chairs.

Took my walking group here for lunch. Booked 15 people in for 2.00pm. Clare was so efficient in dealing with my booking and pre order and all the staff were welcoming, organised and prepared for when we turned up and were flexible in adding another place for an extra person. The food was delicious. The group ordered various baguettes, roast dinner, chicken pie, sea bream, ham, egg and chips, macaroni cheese, vegan burger all reasonably priced and the food did not disappoint. Great service particularly as they were very busy. Considering there were lots of us our food was brought out promptly. The roast leg of lamb was cooked perfectly and tender with veg and roast potatoes. Decent range of puddings too. The chocolate brownie with salted caramel ice cream was good. Would definitely recommend this pub.

As we approached the apex of Wolstenbury hill, two things made themselves apparent to me and my fellow traveller; A weariness of limb and throats, what could only be described as dry husks. As we made our descent you can imagine our joy as we spied in the distance what appeared to be a public house. We entered with verve and were immediately welcomed by a servtress, pleasingly proportioned. Her brightening smile and twinkle of eye were an immediate tonic. She proceeded to gesture with hand, the array of quenchers sure to provide immediate relief. Suffice to say, we purged our arid gullets in a single draught. Five stars!

To this American visitor the J&J was as whimsical as the nursery rhyme.... but with a much happier ending. Instead of breaking my crown I was able to break bread with my wife and her super-best friend. The Inn exuded Pub coziness. Our greeters and servers, Jessica and Daisy, were true ambassadors of British hospitality. Plus they allowed me to stoke-play with the charming wood-burning fireplace. The experience was as comfortable as one could have in the countryside. A+++ recommendation.

Wow, what a great experience, very rarely do you receive great food & great service at the same time. We visited for Sunday lunch, the service was excellent, very friendly & welcoming. The food arrived & we all looked at each other because of the portion sizes were very generous & a great selection of vegetables on the Sunday roast, we all agreed it was one of the best we've had. Surprisingly we all emptied our plates as it was so enjoyable, we even had deserts which were equally lush. Well done to all the staff especially the lady that served us at the bar & at our table, friendly & jovial, We will be back sooooooooooon 10 out of 10

Lovely big garden which is thoughtfully split in two with an area specifically for families with a children’s play area and another section aimed at adults only. If you sit in the garden you are required to leave a credit card behind the bar to ensure you don’t take off without paying ! The menu is on a chalkboard in the main bar area and appears to change regularly. Food was fresh, well presented and quickly served. The pub itself looks a bit tired inside and there was broken furniture in the garden which needed to be removed but we were in the quiet part of the garden on a lovely sunny day and overall it was very enjoyable.

The food was excellent, the menu was bespoke as they allowed us to choose exactly what we wanted and their organisation was first class. The staff on the day were great. The room we hired was spot on for our needs and the gardens are peaceful and with an idyllic view. It was also just a couple of minutes from Clayton Wood Burial Ground, so the location was very easy for us all. Thank you to Clare, Paul and the team at the Jack and Jill.

The pub is quaint and quite traditional looking, but a bit tired and needs a spruce up. The food is good, a mixture of traditional pub food and more adventurous dishes. The menu is listed on a blackboard on the wall, and partly differs from the menu on the website. Service was friendly enough but seemed a bit disorganised, and staff seemed to be arriving after service had started. We didn't realise at the time but our bill was wrong and got partly mixed up with another table, so check your bill carefully!

The Jack and Jill is generally lovely. Unfortunately there seemed to be issues in the kitchen on the day we recently visited. Chicken, ham & leek pie sadly smothered in awful beef gravy ( or maybe the gravy was fine but just didn't work with the dish) And the whole thing had been microwaved. Just bizarre really. The pub had a rather untidy appearance, discoloured walls, quite off putting when entering. Dispite having a reservation, the table looked like it hadn’t been cleaned before hand, crumbs coving the table. The female bartender seemed agitated, shouting loudly to others and being bossy to her colleagues while displaying blunt behaviour towards customers. The unwelcoming atmosphere definitely put me and my friends in a mood being in such an environment. There were no menus; instead, found out everything was listen on a blackboard, not told this when shown to table by bartender. To my surprise, the food looked appealing and was presented nicely, and not the best I’ve had before, but wasn’t that bad. Overall, I was disappointed with my experience, mixed review due to food being good, but service poor.

I don't often rave about roast dinners on Sundays, but I take my hat off to this place. We ordered the Angus beef and we were not disappointed. The beef was cooked perfectly just how I like it and just how beef should be cooked in my opinion medium-rare. It came with a nice portion of vegetables and very nice roast potatoes. We were slightly famished after out jolt up the hill to see Jack & Jill windmills. We both chose the chocolate brownie for dessert which came with the best ice cream. The local beer was good too. We sat in the garden and enjoyed a nice roast in the sunshine overlooking nice views of the Downs. Now can I get a complimentary Jack & Jill Inn T-Shirt for my nice review?

I've been using this pub with the wife for a Sunday night drink for a number of years but recently it has gone badly downhill inasmuch that it closes early if patronage is poor and their range of beer has also deteriorated. We arrived there last night at about 8pm only to be told that last orders had been called and they were about to close. On our previous visit about a year ago, also a Sunday, we managed to have one drink before the same thing happened, and on one occasion we arrived there only to be told they had run out of beer.Treating customers as an inconvenience in this way will only accelerate the pub's demise and I suspect if the owners continue to curtail their hours and turn people away as well as reducing the range of drinks available, it won't be long before we see the forlorn sight of yet another boarded uppub.

We ordered a buffet and some soft drinks but ordered all other drinks individually from the bar. The setting was perfect... large garden with lots of seating, shade and room for playing. And the function room which had plenty of room for all of us. The food was great (they were really accommodating for adapting the menu to our needs) as was the service. Highly recommended!

Walked in and straight away felt like I shouldn’t have. Me and my girlfriend had decided it looked like a nice pub from the outside so I suggested we gave it a go and had some lunch. When we walked in, we went up to the bar too order two drinks, firstly their poor and uninspired choice of beers was my first clue I wasn’t going to enjoy myself. We were then “greeted” and I use the term loosely considered the barman just lent down on the bar and stared at us like we shouldn’t be there. I then decided I would initiate the conversation as clearly my experience of working behind a bar and being the first to make conversation was incredibly inaccurate. I then did the gentlemanly thing and ordered my girlfriends drink “pink gin and lemonade” to which the barman looked at my girlfriend and said “ and for you?” We both laughed as we assumed he was joking, to which he replied “well I don’t know do I” and walked off asking the lady who I can only assume was running the place at the time, whether they had pink gin, she was also clueless about what they stocked behind the bar. We got our drinks after deciding we would probably not eat here and went and sat down. My girlfriend attempted to enjoy her flat gin and lemonade which tasted of lemon flavoured water! The only plus I have from the entire experience is that the pint was nice and I used their WIFI to post this review. All in all if I could have given it a -5 star rating I would have!

I have never written a restaurant review before but felt I had to after today's meal. We had booked for lunch at 1.30 and, on arrival, were pointed in the direction of the back 'dining room' - a very shabby (burn marks on the ceiling and paper peeling off) and dark room just off the kitchen. The table was sticky and the cutlery grimy. We ordered 3 sausage and mash dishes and one vegetarian meal. These were ok, although the cabbage served with the sausages had been cooked with a huge amount of sugar so I was unable to eat it. For pudding, one of our party asked if she could have a smaller sized cheese board as she is diabetic and did not need the full amount £8.50 (price on black board). Staff said no. We ordered it anyway, along with 2 other puddings. It arrived and there were 3 small bits of cheese (which weighed 3 ounces in total), 4 crackers, a few grapes and some chutney. If it had been priced at £4/5 this may be acceptable but not for £8.50 (which we discovered was actually £9.60 when we got to the bill - no explanation given). The sticky toffee pudding was served with 'custard' which consisted of unflavoured flour and water. On receipt of the bill, as well as discovery of the even more expensive cheese board we saw we had been charged for 'Roast beef' for £14. When we questioned this we were told that it's the same price as the vegetarian meal so it shouldn't matter what it says on the bill. When asked to amend the bill, they refused. The prices on the black board for all our dishes were £1 - 2 less than we were actually charged. Beware!During our puddings very strong fish smells also wafted out of the kitchen.

Booked a table for our family meal today, on arrival the staff were so friendly and lovely, took our orders, even put up with my fussy veg choices. 2 of our table had the roast lamb, huge portions and it was very tasty, lamb was cut thin and in gravy so was very tender, roasties were scrumpy and there was 5 different veg with it. My brother and I had the chicken, gammon and leek pie which also came with roast potatoes and veg. I only have 2 small quibbles in that I’d of liked more gravy, but I could of asked for more so my fault. Also I was expecting a whole pie not a slice of a pie. Don’t get me wrong the pie was delicious but if I’d hazard a guess it wasn’t home made. Anyway all in all I’d def visit again when in the area. I would book on a Sunday as it was pretty full quickly after 12pm.

Been going here for many years. A long time ago, I think the kitchen went through some sort of change and wasn't so great, but the kitchen has been fantastic for many years now, and it is often our first choice for lunch especially. We know the owner and his parents a little now, and the kitchen and FOH staff (they don't have a high turnover, which is always a good sign for me) - they are all as friendly as you could want. Ingredients are fresh and carefully (often locally) selected, preparation of the food always seems to be with care and attention, not just something to 'do'. The garden is a joy - careful and varied planting, lots of local wildlife. A great range of choices and prices (but not too many choices, which should give you confidence that what they do, they do well). Nice wines, too. If you find the inside a bit 'old school' (we don't) enjoy the garden, instead (there is a child-friendly garden and an adults only garden - perfect). They do a truly wonderful halibut dish which you should try if you like fish.

We hadn't been to the Jack and Jill for a while and we were sadly disappointed. The pleasant enough bar lady got our order incorrect (forgivable) and my child received a very strong tasting meal she couldn't eat. The following customer service was awful - no apology at all and they even charged us for the resolution of the mistake. Another meal was awful value for money - cheaply sourced, not well made or presented and small amounts. The macaroni cheese was mainly gloopy sauce and very short of pasta. the only passable meals out of the lot was the scampi and chicken goujons and fries which were most likely not home made. Our whole group was surprised at the cost for what we got for such a well established pub kitchen.

I use this pub on a regular basis following training sessions on the South Downs mountain biking and trail running. The guest beers are always top quality. Its been a long standing want of mine to stay the night with a meal and a few beers. As a Christmas gift my wife booked us a room for the night with dinner bed and breakfast. It didn't disappoint! We had a warm welcome and everyone was polite and friendly which is the norm for this pub. Went for a lovely walk on the downs then back to a few drinks in front of the fire. Dinner in the evening was the best roast lamb dinner outside of home I have ever had. The lamb, the roast potatoes and veg were cooked perfectly. A nice bottle of Argentinan Malabec was the perfect choice. The room although basic and a little tired was however warm, quiet and comfortable. We slept really well (didn't want to get out of the cosy bed). Breakfast was a full English with non greasy quality sausages and bacon. All in all a most enjoyable relaxing stay. We will be back.

First visit but won’t be last. Had a lovely wellcome from Charlotte who made us feel at home straight away. There was a nice choice of food which was well presented and very TASTY. A typical country pub would recommend a visit.

We pre-booked our annual family gathering for the Saturday before Christmas, pre-ordered 12 meals, paid a deposit... and arrived at 5.30 for 6pm to find the pub almost empty, a lovely roaring fire and Christmas tree... but a cramped table with just 11 place settings. There was no room for an extra chair on the end.

This is our second visit to the Jack and Jill for a big family celebration using their lovely function room overlooking the garden. The staff could not have been more helpful in planning the menu and accommodating us, and the food was - as always - excellent! Thank you!

A very popular venue especially for Sunday lunch we booked this time as we were disappointed last time unable to get a table. A simple plate of mustard mash braised red cabbage fennel and pork sausage well cooked beautifully presented served with a pint of real ale. All the staff were very pleasant and professional will go again on my next trip.

Friendly place with good selection of beers and broad menu but prices are a little high for basic things like sandwiches and baguettes but prices aside food is good. They have a family room that you can hire out and there is a fair sized car park. We sometimes park up go for a nice walk on the downs then drop in for lunch on way home.

The meal was very tasty for a very reasonable price. You can get a delicious main meal, drink and dessert for not so much considering the quality of the food. The food was one of the best pub foods I've ever had and the tastes went brilliantly together. The atmosphere was very warm and welcoming, as we had come from a long walk in the cold. There is a working fireplace and plenty of variety of food. The service was also quite fast and very friendly. The only thing that could have changed was the fact that the toilets, despite being inside the building, were as cold as the outside, which is very cold at 8 o'clock in winter. This pub is easily accessible via a bus from Brighton or car, so great for a start/end point for a walk.

Three South Downs Way hikers stayed here overnight and had supper and breakfast.Good friendly service. Supper was steak, burger and excellent Halibut. All washed down with good local beers. Breakfast was large full English. Rooms were very basic with the minimum provided.

Pretty average pub fare - medium quality. Not bad for a quick meal if you’re in the area but I wouldn’t make a special trip.

I don't usually come on a Wednesday as usually working. Day off & so pleased I came with my dog. Luck behind the bar was very friendly & welcoming & went out of his way to make my experience fantastic. Love the fact dogs allowed, it's extremely dog friendly with a jar of dog treats on the bar. Some pubs say dogs allowed but clearly they don't really welcome them.

Prima pub om gezellig te gaan eten en een biertje te drinken. Honden waren ook welkom en er is een prima gelegenheid om buiten te eten. Ook voor kleine kinderen een kleine speeltuin

Have been to the Jack and Jill a few times over the past few months and have always found the food top quality and the service friendly and efficient. My wife and I particularly like their roast dinners, which you can get any day of the week.

My husband and I walked into the pub no one even acknowledged us my husband stood at the bar for at least 10mins while the girl behind the bar served people who had just come in not once did she acknowledge my husband then when she finally decided to ask my husband what we wanted she then told us they weren't taking anymore food orders due to being short staffed in the kitchen yet she had taken food orders from people she served in front of us. We will not be going back.

We recently hosted our wedding reception here, with 23 people. We were given the function room which was laid out and decorated for us, simply but beautifully. The food was pre-ordered and the staff did a superb job bringing out meals to the correct people quickly and efficiently. We had eaten there before so already knew how excellent the food is, and our guests were all very impressed and complimentary. The timings were perfect and it was lovely to have the doors open onto the pretty garden. We are so thrilled that we chose to have our wedding celebration here, and cannot recommend the team highly enough. Thank you!

The Jack and Jill pub is well located for access to South Downs walks, has a big beer garden(although a lot of noise from the road) and a reasonable range of drinks. But not sure about the atmos inside and the place could do with a bit of love. It’s a proper pub but still needs a bit of updating.

On a sunny day in the middle of a great hike this was a fabulous place to sit in their extensive garden for a refreshing drink with views of the South Downs. There were loads of tables in separate sections of the garden, though the only downside was the slightly noisy road and trains. There was also a good-looking play area. The food that other people were eating looked tasty. Didn’t really see much of the inside of the pub but what we did see appeared to be a nice old-fashioned pub style with plenty of tables in little nooks and crannies. Prices for drinks did seem rather high - 2 pints ale, 1/2pt lager, 1/2pt lemonade for over £13!!!! Maybe this is typical ‘southern’ prices in which case I’m glad we live in the north where we’d probably have got change from a tenner!! As with many pubs on Trip Advisor there are 2 entries, one supposedly relates to dining and the other to accommodation but this distinction is very muddled so make sure you read both sets of reviews.

We go here quite often and the food is consistently good - the nut roast today was 10/10. Staff are always friendly and efficient. Indoors is a little tired but don’t mind it like that - it’s old style not gastropub. Only downside is road noise but can’t be helped and doesn’t put us off

This pub had all the characteristics of a good country pub. We visited on a very sunny bank holiday and the large garden was great.... spots of shade, spots of sun, area for kids, area for without kids. The menu was traditional pub food and not a long wait time despite being busy.

I don't know how they made my vegan plate of just straight up veggies taste so good, but they did. You know it's a proper chef when they can do that. Highly impressed with the depth of flavour!

I visited today with my Dad and son for a last minute lunch. Emily welcomed us warmly at the check in and although we hadn’t booked she found us a table. When I asked about bringing my dog in she explained about the dog friendly area and showed me the doggie station which was well stocked with water bowls, blankets and treats available for a donation to MacMillan. The lunch menu was reasonably priced and the food was delicious. We were so impressed with the service today. Thank you Emily and Angie for looking after us.
