The food from start to finish was amazing and very tasty! I took the monkfish curry which was very good, I'm pleased I selected this because my wife who ordered a cod fillet was slightly disappointed by the size of her dish whereas the curry was suitably filling. For the desert I took my favourite - sticky toffee pudding and this was one of the best I've had. Not too dry, just right. It's quite an expensive restaurant but you do get what you pay for, great service and food.

Having seen the food pics, I've been wanting to go for a while.. Took the opportunity to go for an after theatre dinner as it was limited in choice over how many restaurants were open at that time.. Booked the set meal as thought it would be quick for them and us considering it would be late.. 10.30pm.. It was packed when we got there and waiter stood by us demanding our drink order.. I asked for 2 mins as we hadn't even had the opportunity to open the menu seeing as he asked the moment he handed it to us.. He was really unhappy about me asking him to come back in 2 mins..! When he did, we gave our order and he asked what we wanted for food.. I said I'd booked the set menu so could we please have the menu.. Ha walked off in a huff, came back with ONE menu for the 4 of us.. he then asked what we wanted, I asked for a couple of mins so we could look at the menu.. He then proceeded to tell me it was late and we had to order.. I said yes, but could we have 2 mins to see what was on the menu.. The food was really good.. so worth visiting for that.. what I will say is, if you're going to open late, then surely we are allowed same courtesy as other diners..? If you don't want us there, then close earlier..? We ordered really quickly and ate as quickly as possible, there were still people there when we left.. but it made for the experience really uncomfortable and I can't say I'd go again.. Btw, instead of giving me a bottle I asked for, he gave my friend and I a glass each.. probably fearing we'd be there ages drinking.. but a bottle between 4 ppl is literally just over a glass each anyways.. 😂 I hate giving negative reviews but just feel he was rude and it wasn't necessary. if you offer to open late, then you need to provide the same level of service, perhaps giving us the heads up that kitchen would close soon would have been much more tactful..

We wanted a seafood restaurant before going to the theatre. What a find! The staff were welcoming and service was excellent. The food was top notch, and the recommendations from the staff were spot on. I like to try new dishes and have to say the octopus starter was delicious, and John Dory is added to my list of favourites. The restaurant its self is a little snug. Some of the tables are quite close, but still far enough apart for privacy (and a personal benchmark of mine - the toilets were absolutely spotless!) It's a little pricy, but this is Central London and quality comes at a price. Given all the restaurants available in London, would I go again? In a heartbeat.

We went for a family lunch to celebrate my sister's 50th. Service was so amateur it was laughable - my main course was forgotten about and arrived so late (after a waiter had been prompted) that everyone else had finished eating theirs, a glass of wine was knocked over my sister (accidents happen - felt very sorry for the waitress - but didn't help the mood!), and the birthday message (with plate of petit fours that were promised) didn't ever materialise... Despite saying we didn't want dessert, two bowls of ice cream arrived as way of an apology. Brilliant - if it had been my sister's 5th birthday, and not her 50th.... It was just sooo disappointing. And hugely expensive. We drank one bottle of house wine between 5 people, and the bill was over £500. There are several thousand other restaurants in London where that can get you incredible food, and a vastly superior dining experience - go to those... not to J Skeekey.

We visited this restaurant for a Valentine’s meal and opted for seats at the bar. The food was good but not super and as expected, on the pricier side. We don’t mind paying for quality food and service, especially for special occasions, but while the dishes were well-prepared, the portions were quite small. Unfortunately, the service didn’t quite meet the standard we expected given the premium pricing and the 13.5% service charge. My partner’s chair was frequently bumped by staff, and I noticed a general lack of attentiveness. On my way back from the restroom, staff didn’t make way, which felt inconsiderate. I also observed a waitress placing a dish down and then reaching across the plate, her arm touching the food—something that shouldn’t happen in a restaurant of this caliber. Similarly, when clearing our plates, the waiter reached right across me for the plates instead of taking the extra step around, which felt careless. There were other small but noticeable lapses—at one point, I was nearly knocked over by someone rushing up the stairs with boxes stacked high, and the staff at the counter seemed rushed and inattentive. I even saw one casually toss a dressed crab aside, sending it spinning. Overall, while the food was enjoyable, the experience didn’t quite justify the price. The atmosphere felt very flat. I had expected a more refined, Old English charm, but it didn’t quite deliver on that front. With more polished service and attention to detail, it could be worth revisiting, but as it stands, it fell a little short of expectations and I wouldn’t say it’s worth the price.

Unwelcoming. Chap at the desk gave us a dirty look, reckoned we couldn't have a table, but he would let us have a seat at the bar. No thanks, no need to be so pompous. Did us a favour, actually, because we then found a fanastic restaurant in Covent Garden, Da Mario. Couldn't have been more friendly or welcoming. Could give Sheeky's a masterclass in good customer service.

Had a meal with the wife after a show and I’m in love with sea food restaurants . Got to say I was pretty underwhelmed . We had six Scottish Oysters to start and i have to say , although nice , I had a lot better . We then had fish pie and Fish stew . Both desperately under seasoned and was crying out for flavour . For sweet we had apple pie and custard and for the price it was again disappointing. Service was great . Tables were a little cramped . Wouldn’t go back .

I haven’t been to J Sheekey in a while but visited for my birthday in January. The service was top notch. The food overall was lovely. The split sole and crab starter in particular was exceptional. However the scallops were very disappointing. They hadn’t been prepared properly. Very gritty and chewy. For the price, I would expect a lot better.

Pleasant experience. I can confirm the good reviews I read. Fantastic well presented oysters, delicious the famous fish pie, fresh Riesling filling the glasses up by the waiter at its right time and one of the best cheesecakes I've had. I think the fish stew is not worth it neither in the price nor the expected quality (few small loose shellfish pieces with bland potato). Above all I'd highlight the very attentive - not pretentious service.

A classy seafood restaurant with wide range of fresh seafood platters. They also offer other options such as burgers and many wine choices to pair with the seafood. The ambiance is warm and cosy, with friendly service. The price was around £50/person, which is expected for the type of cuisine offered.

This was a fabulous dining experience. The staff were friendly, and our server, Alex, was welcoming and had a fun sense of humour while being very knowlegible about both the wines and food. The restaurant is comprised of outdoor and indoor seating, with a number of cosy, small inside rooms, with upbeat jazz music playing unobtrusively in the background. I was particularly struck by the attention to detail on the tables and the presentation of the food. We started with the roasted scallops in their shells and a shellfish bisque. However, the standout starter was the blue fin tuna tartare. This had a coating of spiced avocado with a ponzu sauce, which had a fabulous citrus flavour and a hint of ginger. The plateau de fruits de mer was huge and more than enough for one person (and I have a healthy appetite). The dressed crab was delightful and , he whelks were plump and juicy. A bottle of Reisling with its subtle flavours was the perfect accompliment. We also had a sticky prawn starter as a main, which had a really nice bite courtesy of the jalapeño, lime, and garlic. We finished the meal with an ice cream and a great selection of cheeses. I can highly recommend J Sheekey to anyone looking for a great seafood experience. We shall definitely return to try out some of the other dishes on the menu.

Perfect, nothing to complain about. Several times we had wanted to dine there but the crowds had forbidden us and we understand why. There were 4 of us, it was hot seafood for some with lobster and fresh for others. Everything was very good, fresh. So some will say, seafood is easy to cook, yes and no it still has to be fresh and of quality which was the case. The service is impeccable, the waiter was attentive, attentive but not in a hurry and gave good advice. The team is attentive, no table available, it doesn't matter, you can wait while enjoying an aperitif, it's simple and the timing was respected. The desserts were very good, a nice revisit to the pavlova. A very good evening.

I was a little bit sceptical about this place as I normally would not eat in the middle of town. However our friends had been many times and we were so glad we came. Sunday Jazz duo were amazing. Bloody Mary's at the bar were perfect. Restaurant is made up of little rooms which is lovely. Every mouthful of food was exceptional. How someone can make any complaints is beyond me, but I dare say even if you did have gritty scallops, just ask and they would be changed. My Halibut cooked on the bone was first class, as were Rachel's spicy prawn starter and Monkfish curry. Whatever you do make sure you can leave room or force down the Apple Pie and custard. Best I ever had (sorry mum) It is not cheap, but it doesn't have to be as the quality is right up there. We will definitely be back.

I'd heard about this restaurant through overseas friends who always go when they come over here. We went last night and it was delightful. Bisque and tuna tartar starters were both spot on. My main of fish stew was superb - picked up the bisque from my wife starter and improved - the fish and seafood in it were perfectly cooked. My wife had the fish pie (it's always a favourite of hers) and it was the best she'd had. Smokey, creamy loveliness. The waiting staff had the right balance of approachability and professionalism. Sheekey or cheeky ? To be honest it’s just an average restaurant with not so average prices. Having been placed in an outside dining area that was supposedly heated, I can report that it’s set up for polar bears and penguins only. Others left early as it was so cold or refused to dine as was so unbearable, or hid under blankets. The prices are eye watering and just not worthy of the produce that’s delivered. The six oysters for starters and mains for 4 plus 1 bottle of wine came out at £317. No deserts or extras !! Which, for average pub grub just wasn’t worth the cost. The service was acceptable, but they even added 8 quid to deliver the bread with the oysters as well as charging for the bread on top of this, is just taking the piss we think. For a lot less money we can eat in the original ivy as we have done many times and never faulted the service or food. This, as it’s owned by the same group isn’t the real deal and we would advise against. Please spend your money on a restaurant where you feel appreciated and not ripped off. X

Went there for a birthday party over the weekend. I was not impressed with the service as this place was considered as a 5 star-typed restaurant. Food: The choices are good with different options. Service: bad. The waitress serving us was looking like she doesn't understand our order and we have to keep repeating our order a few times. On the drinks side, we've put in our order once we were seated as we know what we want to drink. However 15 minutes later, there were still no drinks on sight. We've to ask about where are our drinks. Another point was the seating, the table that we're placed was small, cramp and in a traffic flow area were waiters snd waitresses walk passed you ALL THE TIME! While we saw a couple was place in a corner with a bigger table where more people can sit around. Not very clever in their seating plan. We've made reservation in advance, surely you would have thought the restaurant would have a better seating plan. Atmosphere: it was spolit by the cramped seating table, with lots of waitering traffic flow around our table.

We had the oysters which were fresh, then we had the seafood platter!! This platter was amazing, lobster, big prawns, scallops, mussels, so tasty and one thing I commend them on, is the hot temperature of the food, everything came out nice and pipping hot, which I appreciated. Well seasoned and tasty! I will defo be going back again! However, I must say I noticed there was a cover charge on my receipt, when I got home. So I called to ask what this was, the lady told me, you get charged for the linen, table cloth and napkins etc, she said all restaurants charge, i had to correct her and say they don’t as I was looking at another resturant bill and that wasn’t on there. We paid over £350 for two of us but did not consider this money well spent-all because the service was so poor. Our souffles were served five minutes before the other starters arrived, one of the starters arrived after all the others, the starter plates were not cleared until the main course arrived and there seemed to be no-one supervising service generally. IT all felt very haphazard. At these prices, one can expect expert service-not just good food and I would hesitate to go back given the poor service.

The waiter was very attentive and the atmosphere was excellent. For starters we had the mixed platter of oysters (my favourite were the Spéciales de Claire, I would recommend just ordering those) and for main we each ordered a deluxe shellfish platter (which is too much food, just order one to share!) I’d never tried a whelk before so that was new. The platter had a dressed crab, lobster, clams, cockles, ceviche, mussels, king prawns and probably more I’m forgetting. Great for seafood lovers. We were initially a bit reluctant on some of the fish as we usually avoid anything farmed- our server who reassured us it was great Scottish stuff told us the halibut and hale were fantastic - we had halibut grilled and fish and chips hake. He claimed they were the best in the UK and if we found better we could return for a free fish and chips on him. So far we are still looking for better but haven’t found it including in Bath. We will return anyway since and gladly pay for the quality. A la prochaine fois! Thanks.

Great seafood in central London. Service is amazing with a nice staff. Recommend starter Scallops and main a seafood platter which its a good share for two. Lobster is also big enough to share.

I was so disappointed. I had the fish pie which was very bland, I'm afraid to say I have had better fish pie from the supermarket. What a shame.

This place never gets old. The food is wonderful, the service is awesome, the wine list is great - there's simply nothing wrong with this place, it's perfect. This was my 3rd visit (I now live in the US) but will be back next year.

Had an early pre-theater dinner at the counter, starting with the tuna and avocado tartar - the tuna was tasteless, overwhelmed by the avocado and not spicy as advertised. Next was miso salmon, which was excellent, with a side green salad that was severely overdressed. I should have stuck with their reliable fish and chips. Disappointing overall, including service: lots of attention given when I arrived to the fact that I was going to the theater, yet when I needed to leave, it was challenging to find someone to pay the bill. Not to mention, after being seated, a second "host" came by and tossed a second menu at me. I said "I have one, thank you," and he replied "Oh, I see, just one." As a traveler who often dines solo, restaurants need to train staff to eliminate the phrase "JUST one" from their vocabularies. It's 2024.

From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with such warmth and hospitality that it set the tone for a fantastic lunch. Even though we didn't have a reservation, the staff managed to find us a cozy spot. We chose the classic fish and chips, and it was an absolute delight and the portions were incredibly generous. The fish was perfectly cooked with a light, crispy batter and the chips were golden and delicious. If you’re on the hunt for the best fish and chips, I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant. A truly memorable meal in a welcoming atmosphere

J. Sheekey's red facade has been an unmissable fixture along St Martin's Court in Covent Garden since 1896. Sometimes, established legacy restaurants can be disappointing and not live up to their reputation. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and service when I recently dined at this well-known seafood spot. Although there isn't an abundance of gluten free options on the menu, the few that were available were full of flavour and well balanced. The fish was fresh, and I thought everything was spiced beautifully. The waitress took her time explaining what I could/ couldn't eat on the menu, and I felt safe dining despite my dietary restrictions. I was also happy to note that gluten free bread was available. I want to highlight the risotto - it was remarkable, and I haven't had a risotto in a long that that I have enjoyed as thoroughly as this one. I had a very pleasant experience dining here, and I would recommend it as a good option post-West End show!

A superb classic English fish restaurant near theatreland in the West End. It claims to have been around since the 1890s. Whether that's true or not, I don't know, but I do know that it's a London landmark worth visiting for a pre or post theatre dinner. The food is always delicious and never disappoints with interesting twists on classics such as shrimp cocktail or lobster thermidor. The service is attentive and "fun" without being obnoxious. There's a good selection of wine and cocktails. The atmosphere and ambience is usually buzzy.

My recent visit to J Sheekey in London was nothing short of exceptional. Nestled in a narrow street that evoked a sense of old London, the atmosphere felt as though I had stepped back in time to a historic era. The surrounding pedestrian traffic was dense, adding to the lively and classic London charm, while inside, the ambiance was calm and inviting. From the moment I sat down, the service was fantastic. A young waiter, in particular, stood out. His attention to detail was impeccable; he anticipated everything we needed, and we never had to call him over – he was always ready and present. This level of care and professionalism greatly enhanced our experience. We indulged in the best fruits de mer I’ve had since Paris. The quality of the seafood was incredibly high, making for an unforgettable meal. Every bite reflected the freshness and careful preparation of the ingredients. J Sheekey has certainly set the bar for excellence in seafood. On top of the outstanding food and service, there was also a sense of warm hospitality that made the evening feel special. The entire experience at J Sheekey was a perfect blend of tradition, high-quality cuisine, and attentive service. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking a true taste of classic London dining.

All round excellent. Went pretty all out on the food as it was a celebratory meal but could have been cheaper if selected differently. It's expensive but for a premium fish and seafood experience in classic ambience with great service it's worth it. The cheesecake to share for dessert and banana Carre cocktail really impressed. Service warm and efficient.

I had a wonderful Easter lunch with my kids in this restaurant. Apart negligible details (i.e. the bottom of the small fish pie served as starter was a bit hard to cut) the food was excellent. The staff was very kind and we appreciated the chocolate gift offered at the end. Maybe the best experience of our stay in London.

J Sheekey is always a safe place to have a good meal. It feels like it has got more expensive than my last visit. The fish pie is a classic, but at its price, I don’t think it’s that special. It’s so so. The service however is top notch and your water glass doesn’t get a chance to be empty.
