No impressed. Meals not value for money. Vegetables should be included in price - not extra as a side. Drinks too pricey compared to other places. Won't be going again

Just returned from this lovely restaurant. 10 ladies looking for somewhere to eat around the area, and a doorman recommended it to us. We were seated downstairs while they set our table up. Ordered numerous starters and mains between us, and everything was absolutely amazing. I personally had the scallops (cooked to perfection) and the wagu burger, which was 1 of the best burgers I've ever had. The staff were fantastic. Brilliant service, nothing was too much for them. Very accommodating. Brilliant atmosphere. Thank you all for a great evening.

Lovely atmosphere, lovely music! Now for the bad. Limited/poor drink selection. Food extremely salty Service shocking, we had to ask for plates and glasses to be removed, asked for a desert menu that never came, asked for the card machine never returned. We got the bill and it stated "Blank" with a price and "miscellaneous" with a price next to it. We were celebrating a birthday and asked when we arrived for a cake with a candle which also never came!! The menu online is out of date by three years! The staff explained when we asked why the menu was different than what we saw before we booked. Awful! Told the guy behind the bar of our experience who we had to settle the bill with after noone came to collect who just said he couldn't 'watch through staff because has on the bar' We could have easily walked out without paying, wish we has! I would never return!!

Came across this great restaurant by chance before going to see the Gabrielle Concert last night - they are doing a deal on steaks at the moment - 2 for £36 - friends and I were so impressed with the quality of the steak with different sauces and perfect chunky fries - service was superb - really friendly and efficient waitress and the Chef ensured our food was as we ordered - we had a bottle of Malbec at a good price too - can recommend this place 100 % and will return when back in Hull - Thankyou all at J Johnson Wine Bar

Excellent venue, such a nice building and terrace

Arrived at the restaurant 3 years ago..... told the order would be 30 minutes. Here we are a few hours later. Drinks orders still not arrived, food not arrived. Had to take to eating my friends arm to keep up my strength. Waitress told us there was only one chef on tonight. Four tables waiting as well..... not good enough.

Didn't eat, only had a beer I didn't finish, quiet and moved on quickly, wasn't for me really

We asked our friendly and obliging waitress Jessiica, if we could have traditional fish and chips with mushy peas (not then on the J Johnson Wine Bar and Bistro Menu in Hull (near The Deep Aquarium) .Nothing was too much trouble for Jessica, our waitress (see photo). One of the excellent chefs Ben Farrar (see photo) cooked his own “haute cuisine” 'take; specially for us. We were so enthusiastic , the chef immediately said he was going to put the dish on his standard menu. A classy Bistro near Hull's top tourist attraction The Deep.

Atmosphere was so good! The music was really nice and great ambience. The food was the best we've had in such a long time, and the price was very reasonable. The drinks were really tasty and every one of the staff were so friendly and helpful! The Chefs even came out and talked to us which was a lovely touch. Will absolutely be returning!

What amazing food and the service was just as brilliant. Had the posh Pattie and Chips and a side of vegetables. Quite honestly it was so delicious.

Me and my wife found this place last Saturday as we made a rare outing (no kids!) and it was a great experience. The cocktails were some of the best we've had and the barman was lovely while we watched him make them! Staff although super busy were really friendly and up for a chat, we had a lovely night! We had already ate before arriving but knowing now there is a restaurant upstairs we can't wait to come back and try the food!

Went to J Johnson's for tea with a friend & it was a steak night, I must say the whole night was amazing, the service, the food & the fantastic offer as it was steak night, I would highly recommend this place to any meat lover, cant wait to go back AAA+++

The staff were very polite when we arrived and it seemed like a very pleasant atmosphere. Our mains took a while to arrive but we didn’t mind too much cause we were having a good time. When they did arrive, we generally enjoyed it but noted that the steaks were very salty so we didn’t finish it all. When the waitress came to collect our plates, one of our party mentioned they were a bit salty (just as feedback, not a complaint). The waitress said they had a lot of complaints about the same thing. We didn’t think much of it and asked for the dessert menu. Then the manager came over and was incredibly rude and condescending saying the food wasn’t salty and we had asked for salt and pepper on the table (we didn’t add any to our food because we didn’t need to!). We didn’t order dessert and left because we couldn’t believe her attitude. So unprofessional when her staff had handled the comment well and we were planning to continue our meal and enjoy the night until the manager decided fo be unnecessarily defensive. Would not recommend.

Visited tonight as a group of 6. First of all the waitress was extremely rude when I ordered my 10oz ribeye rare saying ‘what a way to ruin a steak’. When revived said steak the same waitress again said ‘here is your ruined steak.’ And she wasn’t wrong. The steak was stone cold in the middle. The first half of the steak was bland and had no flavour. The second half just tasted completely of salt. The only reason I ate most of it was because I waited an hour inbetween the starter and the main course. Hardly acceptable when your charging £26 a steak. Also your waitresses couldn’t be be bothered to go round the table to collect plates. We had to pass them to her to which is hardly the best service going. All in all a terrible night and terrible service.

Best Sunday lunch I've had in a long time. The roast chicken is fantastic. Great sticky toffee pudding and creme brulee as well.

Absolutely brilliant from start to finish. We had the special, sharing steak. Perfectly cooked and gorgeous. All the other meals were fantastic. Service was brilliant and had a great atmosphere.

Booked for our 10th anniversary dinner based on reviews, and it exceeded all our expectations ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ would anniversary here again!! The staff were attentive and friendly, and Jess our server was an absolute joy. She suggested a steak special which was perfect. The scallop starter was genuinely the best I've had. We were also impressed with the great selection of wines at reasonable prices. The setting is industrial cool but intimate. All together a fabulous evening, wonderful food, and made all the more special by the lovely staff. Literally the only minor gripe was no large bottles of sparkling water. Can't wait to visit again!

Booked a table for 8.30pm for family of 6. The place was busy so expected a wait, the starters appeared not long after but the mains didn't arrive until 10.30pm. The inexperienced staff gave the excuse of I had ordered a well done steak & it needed to rest !!! When it did arrive it came short of the sides advertised as having. We were all very annoyed that we had to wait & they offered a reduced bill but that didn't make up for the disappointment on a family outing.

What a Gem of a find. It's in Humber Street with lots of other resturants a vibrant location. On arrival the staff were very attentive we went upstairs. The service was impeccable & the food was amazing a very good menu selection & reasonably price. We have booked fir our staff Christmas & we will definitely recommend. Thank you to all staff. Just absolutely fantastic. Me & my partner have been around 6 times now and we recommend J Johnsons to anyone and everyone looking for somewhere nice to eat in the city centre, they always exceed everyone's expectations. Please try the Prawn Thermador!!!! We had several very attentive staff waiting on us on a Saturday night and they provided speedy service with a laugh and a smile and honestly would have bent over backwards to accommodate us. We had the 28oz steak to share that came in a stroganoff sauce and three types of mushrooms and my god, compliments to the chef every single time.

We noticed on their Facebook page that they had announced they were closed until 6pm as they had a private event but were open ' as normal.' From this time. We arrived at 6pm and the party was very much still going on, loud music and @ 30 remaining party guests downstairs who were still enjoying their event. We were greeted by a doorman who turned us away initially, explaining there was a private event. We insisted over the loud music that we had a 6pm booking and he disappeared and then returned to ask us to wait until the upstairs seating for diners had been set. We were seated very quickly on the mezzanine, but the music and noise from the party made us have to shout at each other to be heard. The restaurant gradually filled during the night and the music and loud shouting downstairs carried on for over an hour and a half and as we were leaving. Service was very slow. Food was ok, but very salty and over seasoned. The whole atmosphere of the restaurant was like a nightclub and not ' chilled and relaxed' as stated on the website. We enquired with the waitress if the noise volumes were 'normal' and were told the party was supposed to end at 6pm for normal service, but they were regulars and they didn't want to ask them to turn it down. I asked if this was at the expense of paying diners as we weren't told a"private" but very public party would be happening whilst we ate. Extremely dissapointing and totally ruined our experience. Will not return to a restaurant that treats paying customers in this way. If the restaurant agrees to a private party..they should not simultaneously expect paying diners to endure loud music and shouting. Let's hope the regulars stay that way as this does not encourage new patrons.

Took my daughter and family here for a birthday treat last Friday. The lad (cant call him a waiter) had no knowledge of drinks or food. Could not explain food on the children's menu never mind the main one.A childrens starter was Carrot and cucumber sticks with humus. The carrots had been boiled and chilled so were soggy and there was no cucumber.Toast instead.Apart from that fine! It took 20 minutes to come out of the kitchen? Then another long wait for the mains to come out. One child had ordered bruchetta with ham mozarella and mushrooms. The waiter said is was like a pizza so what a surprise when it turned out to be a 3 inch thick sandwich.Not very appetising. The Jerk chickens were very very spicey and the belly pork overcooked with the biggest dollop of pollenta you could get. I have never seen my family leave so much on their plates. It then took 20 minutes to clear our plates maybe they thought we had not finished!! A long wait to take our dessert order and even longer to put two scoops of ice cream in a bowl and take a brownie out of the box and decorate it. Even my 10 year old grandson asked me "How long does it take to serve ice cream?" The bit about the night that made me chuckle was that when we booked we got an email confirmation that stated " We respectfully advise that we want the table returned by 8.30" They had not cleared the mains by 8.30!! I would suggest your staff need a lot more training and the kitchen needs a massive kick. It was not busy and I can see why.

We ate upstairs in the restaurant on Friday 12 th August. The service was fine and the food arrived in a reasonable time. I had the hake meal on a chorizo broth. Far too salty for me and almost inedible. I removed the fish and ate it on a separate plate. When the waiter asked if everything was ok I told him it was too salty and to tell the chef. When he returned we asked what the chef had said He is outside was the reply. We paid the bill and left after this. Such a poor end got what should have been a nice night out. If you ask for feedback. Please be prepared to listen to it and hopefully improve for future customers

The food and service was excellent. The stuffed flat breads were really lovely, reasonable range of main courses that offer something a little bit different to your standard steak or burger. The tomahawk steak was amazing, and cooked perfectly.

Thought we'd try out the set menu Sunday lunch. The choice was appealing and varied, on choosing our 2 courses I plumped for the homemade Haslet with egg and black pudding. Came presented with a little relish and all I can say is Wow 🤓👌 superb! Followed by the main course of belly pork and loin of pork with a completely wonderful selection of potatoes and vegetables. Set Sunday lunch was £18 for two courses... An absolute bargain for this quality of food 🤓👌 I'd highly recommend you pop in and sample the food.... I know I'll definitely be returning

Went to Johnson today with my daughters who are only young and the lovely lady behind the bar went out of her way to make my daughters the most amazing mocktails the services was super fast and the food was fantastic will definitely be returning... would definitely recommend the roof terrace will definitely be returning 🙂

Mixed feelings about my experience. So to start with the positives, the service was really friendly both at the bar and those taking orders. The food is really, really delicious. A little pricy, but is worth it for the nice atmosphere and taste. The negative for me, was how long the meal took to arrive. I ordered the Tamohawk Steak (£60) at approximately 5:40 and it arrived at 6:45. Now me and my group had to leave at 7 to make it for further plans. We believed the 1½ hour time slot we gave ourselves would have been fine. However ended up being late, which was really annoying. The restaurant at the time was near enough empty as we ordered and by the time our food arrived a bunch of tables who came in, and ordered after us had now finished their meal. We only ordered mains (minus 2 slices of bread) , so we understand a small additional wait time would exist. However, over an hour is ridiculous. It wouldn't have been ridiculous, if the waiting staff had simply informed us of the wait as we ordered. As we would have ordered a quicker meal. So basically I had to rush a £60 large steak in 15mins. This was SUCH a huge let down, as I couldn't enjoy it. Tasty sure, for a speed eating competition. The only thing they said was "sorry for the wait, but it takes time to cook something like this." As they placed it down. Well firstly, 1 hour? I highly doubt it takes that long, likely a mistake of some kind from the kitchen. But let's say it does take that long to cook a steak (which was ordered before lots of other tables) tell me next time about the wait. Even though we left as fast as we did, there was no reduction in the bill in anyway for the huge wait. Even if it was just a free drink or something of an apology. We didn't voice our issues at the time, because we had to shoot off. But any restaurant charging high end prices should be aware when they've messed up, and try and make amends without such prompting. So yeah, nice food. But a couple of things they could do better at, such as informing about wait times, or compensation for messing up. On that basis I think 3* is fair.

Hidden little gem in Hull. Food is great and when I've been before..always busy enough to have atmosphere, but not so you can't talk. To me, the best on the street.

A lovely rustic but modern bar. Bare brick walls with lovely decorative accessories from tiles to door handles. Service was excellent and we actually stayed in there the whole night as the atmosphere was very good. Background music was excellent (in my humble opinion) not a chart song to be heard, just classics from the 70s and 80s. We didn't eat but the food looked and smelled absolutely fabulous. We will be going back to try the food which in the main is served in the restaurant located upstairs, but could also be eaten in the bar area if you so wished. There is plenty of parking around the area (on the Marina) but this will no doubt be limited during busier periods as we get back to a more normal way of living again.

Cozy yet vibrant atmosphere. It’s fancy without feeling pretentious. Exactly my kind of place to eat and drink. The food is ridiculously high quality. My mouth is still watering at the memory of the porchetta days later. I can’t wait to go back to try everything else on the menu. If I lived in Hull I’d be there all the time.

First visit and we wasn’t disappointed, the food and service was excellent. The food was 10/10 , my partner had lasagna which was made from steak , amazing ! The cod loin was cooked to perfection, complements to the chef and front of house staff especially the young man that served us on table 25 . Will definitely come again

Had a fantastic evening with my family celebrating my 60th birthday. The food is absolutely delicious, cocktails are amazing and a wonderful atmosphere. Many thanks to Leanne and all her staff who were extremely friendly during a very busy night. Will definitely be coming back to enjoy more sumptuous mouthwatering food. When I arrived I reported that the toilets had no soap. Bit during my visit this was not attended to. The crab and crayfish were good, but no taste of the crab!

It was really quiet downstairs when we visited, lovely decor and atmosphere even though there weren't many in. A civilised glad of wine or two. We enjoyed it.

We had initially popped in here for a couple of cocktails, but only stayed for 1 in the end. I ordered a Long island Iced Tea, and what arrived defiinately did not match the description, not only was it served in a lowball glass, instead of the traditional Highball glass, but it was mostly ice.

Wow... One of the best places I had at Hull. The food was unique and the Moroccan lamb I ordered was exquisite. Yum. Definitely coming back again.

Fantastic food and service, pricing was excellent. The only potentially negative points are an absence of "adult" alcohol free options and a means of providing a gratuity as part of the bill (don't carry cash). However, still 5 stars!

Staff are brilliant here and its a great venue. I was slightly disappointed the menu had changed from 2 weeks ago. I had my meal picked out viewing the menu even last night. But today they had changed their menu, which was more suited to an evening meal for me. I will go back and have a meal, but today wasn't for me.

Absolute gem of Hull..best steak I've had in my life

Really nice food, the chorizo duck scotch egg is highly recommended 👍 I was expecting tiny little portions but I was pleasantly surprised! It's not cheap, but I think you really do get what you pay for in the quality of the food 😋 Service was great, I went as part of a group of 12 and all our food came out together, waitresses were always on hand to politely and efficiently see to our every need. Very nice, well recommended.

Food was great but service was terrible. Waited a long time for food and when bringing it up to waitress she was rude and didn't really care. Waited half an hour after mains whilst being ignored and not offered dessert. Meanwhile waiting staff was just stood around and another sat flirting with a table. Had to go to the till and ask for our own bill in the end.

This place is terrific. Delicious, high class food and very willing to accommodate dietary requirements. The building is gorgeous and the staff are lovely.

Absolutely stunning food! Everything on the menu sounded phenomenal and my Belly Pork main did not dissapoint. Warm, welcoming atmosphere with friendly and accommodating staff as well as top notch wine. Looking forward to visiting again!
