J Bennett Fish & Chips in Wealden

Unfriendly service food was awful half cold over cooked dry burger, the chicken burger my wife had was unappetising bland chips, price was way to dear for what it was, unimpressed.

As a local I’ve always been a fan of this place and enjoyed the food regularly Last Saturday 16/03/24 I turned up at 19.50 looking forward to my dinner to be greeted by the cook and a young lad Bear in mind it’s a Saturday night and it’s 1 hour and 10 mins till there are supposed to close at 21.00 No food just one piece of fish in warmer when I asked for sausage and chips No sorry mate was answered We have Finshed as he kept on cleaning You have lost my business !!!!!!

Phoned an order head and still waited 30mins for the food. Food is good but the service can be terrible. Need to get better at time keeping.

I've been there a thew times just moved into crowborough I asked for light batt fish I think he must of missed heard me and said extra batter on fish wow not the best 😢

Oh dear, always used to be really good but the fish was overcooked and very greasy, the chips were tough {!} and not very hot. Come back Ralph!!

Finally this regular favourite is in good hands. Back to serving great fish and chips and is again a firm favourite. Mixed experience since the original owner retired but now delivers on every visit. Delicious fish and chips - best in the area.

The quality of Bennetts Fish and Chips was renowned for top quality - regrettably, my wife collected 2 cod and chips last night - the chips had been re-heated, virtually inconsumable and the fish was so small there was very little meat on it. The price has also gone up by 20% with a reduction in quality. I was sick in the night and could only blame this meal.

The quality of the fish is incredible, super fresh, tasty and the size is huge. Crispy and hearty potatoes. Best of all, the very lovely treatment. I'm definitely coming back!

Wife and I had Bennett’s fish & chip today for lunch. Hoping that the changes in ownership had improved the quality of the meal, for our last visit was a mitigating disaster, the young girl running the show didn’t seem to have much idea of how to cook fried fish the result was undercooked fish, soggy batter …. Today we decided to give the another try. We were both very happy with the outcome, the reasonably portioned cod was cooked perfectly, and was very fresh. Bravo Bennetts….you’ll be seeing again in the near future.

Sadly, quality is going downhill. Ordered 2 small cod & 1 large chips for collection last night. Specifically asked for chips to be double-fried / crispy. Fish was good but batter was soggy & oily. Chips were soggy & cold. Third time unlucky so reluctantly give up !

The best fish and chips around by miles! Also the curry sauce is the best I’ve ever had! Very friendly staff and good service! Prices are very reasonable and portion sizes are perfect. Would recommend to anyone :)

When Ralph and Evette retired I was really disappointed. They were such nice people and the staff Layla and Polly were great too, and the fish and chips were top drawer! So good I religiously drove from Tunbridge Wells to Crowborough for my fish and chips!!! As you can imagine I was really worried how the change of ownership would affect my fish and chips!! If I'm honest it is slightly different but the quality is still there as are the staff and the point I'm trying to make is I still religiously drive there every week driving past god knows how many other fish and chip shops on the way!!!!

I have used Bennetts regularly for years, but not anymore!! Since the change of ownership it has gone downhill big time. The prices have gone up but the portions are much smaller. On my second to last visit my medium cod was no bigger than a large fish finger. I was so disappointed that on my last visit I showed the girl a photo of it. She wasn’t interested at all! This time I purchased large cod. This was no bigger than what used to be a medium cod. Then the chip portions are ridiculous. A normal portion is much smaller than it used to be. I think it is sharp practice to increase the prices AND reduce the portion sizes. Then the icing on the cake is the decline in quality. Steer clear of the place is my advice. Sadly I will from now on!!

Sadly after the changeover of owner something has gone amiss. The fish is much more greasy and less fish (more batter) than before. We will give it another go as we have been going for quite a long time now and the only other good F&C is in T Wells which is useless really. I really hope it picks up as I’m running out of take away options in Crowborough which is really frustrating ☹️

The quality of the fish and chips is nowhere near as good as when the original owners ran the business. Very bland but looks good! The new owners are keeping the name too! Confusing for loyal long-standing customers. Such a shame. Been coming here for years.

I visited here on Tuesday with my partner and little boy and all I can say is WOW! The potion sizes are perfect, really hits the spot! I’d love to know what sausages they are as didn’t think when asking. Just ordered and boy they were delicious! Seems to be running so smoothly up there. Hats off to new management!!

We have been customers of Bennett’s for more years than I care to remember and the food has always been great!!! Tonight however, it was incredible - the fish was meaty, the chips delicious, the set up for Covid pickup was really efficient as ever and just wanted to say thank you!!!

Same as the previous reviewer, our portions were very much smaller than usually served here and had no salt and vinegar at all. Sacrilege!

Disappointed with an extremely small “large” chips, combined with the fact that there was no salt and vinegar on them.

I visited Bennet’s today and was once again impressed by the quality of the food but also the way this shop goes about dealing with the Covid restrictions and making the whole experience as safe as possible. I wish a few others would take a lead. Obviously they have no control over how people arrive but they have done all they can and a bit more to mitigate some of the issues that could arise without proper social distancing. I like the way they provide a means of making contactless payment without having to enter the shop and I felt the staff were doing all they could to make the customers feel as safe as possible. Great fish and chips as well.

We as a family have been going to j bennetts for years and would never choose to go anywhere else. There has never been a time that our meal hasn't been perfectly cooked,The fish is battered beautifully,light and not over cooked and our chips are always perfect. The premises are immaculate. The staff have worked really hard to continue serving the local community in these difficult times. They have put in place measures to keep the people of crowborough safe while picking up their orders. On the rare occasions you may have to wait longer than you expected,(as I have done at other takeaway service's)its well worth the wait. Its obvious the staff are doing their best to supply our orders in such unusual circumstances. Keep up the great work j bennetts.

Back in July I happily gave a glowing review of Bennetts but, after last night's visit, I have to warn anyone in the Covid "At risk" category that I believe Bennetts now, unwittingly, presents a potentially serious health hazard. The system is that you telephone Bennetts with your order and you are given a collection time. When we arrived at their shop last night there were 4 or 5 people waiting ahead of us. We arrived spot on our allotted time - but had to wait 30 minutes until we finally received our food. When we left the shop there were about 20 people crowding outside in an area no larger than approximately 20' square. Some were wearing face masks, others were not.This may now possibly constitute an illegal gathering but, in any event, it is potentially dangerous for everyone in such a large queue. The problem seems to be that Bennett's system simply does not work especially when inconsiderate, selfish people turn up late for their orders, or decide to add to their orders when they finally arrive. To be fair to the staff at Bennetts they will not allow more than two customers in the shop at any time and they must wear face masks. The staff cannot be held responsible for the bad behaviour of some customers but for the system to work properly each order should be made up, wrapped and being kept warm by its allotted collection time. A 30 minute backlog is unforgiveable.Sadly we will not return to Bennetts whilst infection rates are currently out of control. The risk is too great.

Really impressed with the cod and chips we had last night, and the portion sizes were great. We will be returning.

We called here as we have done before, for fish and chips whilst on family duty, this time, firstly the quality of the food was below the previous high standards. 2 fish chips ordered by telephone, one of the fish was overcooked, very crispy batter (which I like), but the fish was dry inside, the other hadn’t been cooked for long enough, with soggy batter, chips also not cooked enough and I wonder if this is down to what happened below.The shop say ‘telephone orders only’, but that simply wasn’t the case the evening I was there, clearly more people turning up, playing orders and then waiting, no effort made to social distance in and around the entrance and no queuing system in place outside the takeaway, lake of people wearing face masks in that area also.I am sure when I return next, the fish and chips will be back to their very best, but that wont be until after covid has been defeated as didn’t feel safe outside the shop

Used Bennett’s many times over the years and the food is always delicious. The staff are very friendly too.

I drove from Worthing to Crowborough to see my cousin for the first time since Chrismas due to Covid. She suggested I bought the fish and chips from Bennetts as she has always been happy with their meals. I could see our cod and chips were being cooked fresh so was patient to wait the 5 minutes or so. When they were ready I saw that they were double wrapped so would keep hot until I got them to my cousin's house. The fish was delicious, so moist and tender, no wonder she recommended Bennetts, I will in future, why even think of trying anyone else. Such a clean shop, pleasant staff too.

First time in visiting this fish and chip shop. I don't normally go for cod as one time I had cod somewhere else it was greasy and didn't feel well. This cod was LOVELY, no horrible oily grease taste AMAZING, chips good hardly had any bad bits. Would recommend to family and friends

We have lived in Crowborough for over 30 years but have seldom bought from Bennetts as they are at the opposite end of town from us. When we were forced into Lock Down Bennetts opened up on a few evenings each week with strict social distancing and Covid-safety measures. It was a life line; an opportunity to "eat out" once a week and their food was excellent. Word travels fast and, now, and every time I pass them now there are 4 or 5 people waiting to collect their food (socially distancing, of course). Our sincere thanks to them.

Ordered cod and chips from here and it was there, freshly cooked and ready to be picked up at the designated time. The quality and portion size was super, the batter on the fish lovely and crisp, the cod well cooked and a lovely flavour and the chips nice and crispy. (Not sure how this can be achieved as, usually, takeawy chips tend to be a bit soggy). The pick-up system was efficient with due regard to distancing and hand sanitisers available also, Very impressed!

Even during lockdown they delivered an amazing dinner for a family of five whilst keeping to social distancing guidelines. Thank you from a very happy family! Delicious food as always :)

Average fish and chip shop. NO GRAVY. NO curry sauce... too much batter to too little fish and small menu. ‘Pic ups’ down the road is the place to go.

Having just come into the shop and ordered large cod and chips , was very very Disappointed that it was cold but stood there and watched fresh chips and fish being put into the cabinet not only that but someone came in after us and got her order first that was all the hot stuff that was very unfair very bad customers service not the cheapest willing to pay the price if good quality food .but on this occasion was very poor

This fish and chip shop has everything going for it. Looks good, good location, good choice and very helpful and well trained staff. Unfortunately the cooking of the fish could be a lot better. Tried it and each time it's a mixed bag. Too much batter cooked too high so fish is dry on lots of occasions. We so want this to be a better experience but it's not. The cooking and product is fundamental with a chip shop however, with a few tweaks it could be great. Here's hoping.

We have visited this chip shop regularly when in the area and although more expensive than other options was always worth paying out the extra. However, last night made up our mind never to back. £2 for small chips and £4.95 for small cod. Items were wrapped and we decided to eat in the town square next to the statue of Arther Conan Doyle. When we unwrapped the meal was very disappointed at what greeted us. Chips were limp. anaemic and under cooked. The cod had a build up of batter in order to make it appear much bigger than it was. Batter was soggy and wet. The young guy that served us was very polite and efficient. The store was extremely clean. But the quality of the food was diabolical. I did notice that the usual guy, a tall thin gentleman was missing, he usually cooks the food to perfection.

The fish and chips were quite the worse we have eaten. The batter was soggy and the chips were pale and limp. The problem was the frying temperature was not high enough. Will not visit again

We have always said that the chips here are excellent, always the bees knees. Fresh cut and fresh fried in front of you. Polite staff are here too and a wonderfully clean establishment. So, what more do you need? A healthy appetite! Bon appetite!

Can’t fault the fish and chips, but they only take cash no cards. Would also suggest you order less chips as the portions are big. The staff are friendly and helpful

It's been a long time since I last had fish and chips from Bennet's. However, I ordered two portions of cod and chips today and was very disappointed. The size of the portions were more than adequate and there is no complaint at all with this It was the batter that was issue. It was undercooked and flavourless. It reminded me of the cake mix left over in the mixing bowl when your mother made cakes. This is hardly what you want on your fried fish. I am certain that it wasn't cod that was served as this should have large, flaky flesh. These fish had flesh that more resembled that of mincemeat. They advertise it as cod, your paying cod prices, so it is cod that should be served.

Have been getting fish and cups from here for some time now, I feel it’s one of the best fish and chips takeaway in the area Never too oily or greasy and cooked well

I heard rave reviews of Bennett's but whenever I've bought there find that wrapping the food in plastic bags makes it sweat and ruins both fish and chips by the time you get home. You can somewhat overcome this by putting it on plates in a hot oven, but that kind of defeat the object of a take away.

Without doubt the best fish and chips in Crowborough. Fish is always cooked beautifully and is never dripping in oil like I have experienced in some of the other local fish & chip shops.

The fish and chips were good, the burger was awful and went in the bin after one bite. Ditch the burgers from the menu and stick to what you are good with the fish and chips

Collected fish and chips tonight and it was so disappointing. Ordered two cod and two haddock and a plaice. The haddock and COD were not marked on the bag and looked identical so couldn’t tell which was which. The cod and haddock was tasteless and the batter was soggy and uncooked inside. Very disappointing

Family run ,well established business , by far the best fish and chips in Crowborough although a little pricey. You pay for what you get though and the quality is Excellent! Avoid Fridays & Saturdays if poss though - queue out the door.

Always use Bennett's queues always but food is great. Hot freshly cooked and good portions. Never had a bad meal here in years. Would recommend 100%

Staff are always welcoming and the shop is spotless. We live the other side of town but drive to Bennetts as you can't beat their fish and chips even though there is another fish and chip shop closer to us. That's how good it is.

Excellent food and service. Doesn't do Gluten Free food though :-( Will cook fish without batter but cooked in same oil so can't guarantee Gluten Free. Other than that its highly recommended.

All I can say is “YUM” Always fresh fish. The owner is always ready to please, by cooking the fish to suit you. Ie: without batter or less batter.

We had Fish and Chips with our Grandchildren a few weeks ago . Very dry fish . Chips ,all sorts of broken bits . Very greasy . Not as good as the previous ones we’ve had . Very disappointing .

Fish is of a high quality and not at all greasy Very generous portion of chips. We loved the mushy peas too. Service was quick and food was still hot when we arrived home.

We ordered take away on a Saturday evening. The shop was busy, but the line moved quickly. We got standard halibut and chips. The halibut was huge - a whole fish. The batter was a bit greasy as were the chips. However, it is fish and chip take away not a five star establishment. Overall, great if you’re looking for something to grab and go, but not great if you want a memorable meal that is digestible by your gallbladder.

I have used this takeaway for 28 years and the quality has been consistent for all of that time. Friendly service, delicious food, and great portion sizes.

This is a throwback fish and chip shop. They do it right and take it seriously. The fish as well as the battered sausage is wonderful and everything you would expect.

Having recently moved to live in Crowborough we had noticed how, whenever we drove past in the evening, the shop was always very busy. Decided to give it a try and now we know why it is so popular. Never tasted better. Just the job!

Decided to have a treat night so opted for Bennett’s fish and chips. Great welcome when you arrive through the door with plenty of staff on hand including the boss to serve the queue of hungry punters their fish and chips. Very basic décor but very clean. I ordered a takeaway of cod and chips but was disappointed when I got it home. The batter was rather soggy (not fully cooked) so couldn’t eat it. Minus the batter, the fish tasted lovely and the chips had been freshly cooked. I will give it another try as I may been unlucky on this occasion. Parking is a bit of a headache there so you have to pick your slot wisely..

Of the main road bennetts fish shop lovely food cooked to order nice staff. Only downside is parking not good, Nearly always a queue but don't let that put you off.

Stark electric light. Tiled from foot to ceiling. Peg board displaying prices. It's like stepping back to your child hood and the good news is that it tastes just as good as you always remembered.

I can't think of a better chippy than this one. Crowborough is very lucky to have it. Great well-cooked food, excellent service (even when there's a queue) and super-clean too. I would have docked a point for the slightly awkward car parking situation but that'd be mean... and besides, walking an extra hundred yards up the hill is well worth it for fish & chips this good. *Great view too. The cost of fish and chips have soured over the years so it can et expensive so its now become a treat. Great food here but a bit stingy on the chips and we must have come at the wrong time as we had a lot of the smallish bits as well....but great batter on the fish.

Bennett's fish and chips are great. None greasy, crisp batter and generous portions.The quality of the cod is very good. Although you may have to queue for a few minutes- it is very popular - it is well worth it.
