We used to live in Plymouth, but have been in Cornwall for 10 years and fancied an Ivor Dewdney pasty last year. So I ordered some online and they tasted just like we remembered. The box was well packaged and the tracking is fab. So good we ordered some more in February of this year and noticed they had gotten smaller! I expected the price change, but not the size. So just in case this was a one- off, I ordered some more this month, only to find they are even smaller and 6 of them were soggy. I contacted the store, to be told the size hadn't changed and that the pasties would still be ok to eat. I'm not entirely sure they will taste very good. So sadly we won't be ordering them ever again!

I'll start by saying we ordered the pasties online and you would presume the pasties are the same as what you are served in the shops (considering the price they should be as good or better). We've been to Devon and Cornwall far too many times to count in the last 40 odd years (my Sister lived in Devon for 30 years or so and I visited often and holidayed in both counties long after she moved away). No trip to the South West is complete unless you grab a proper pasty (and a cream tea) so we are no strangers to a great pasty, we've easily eaten them in the hundreds between us. As we're now both disabled trips to the West country ended a few years back but we really fancied a good West country pasty. So, we decided to try Plymouths 'best voted pasty'... Wow, what a disapointment! Is Ivor Dewdney now Plymouths ONLY pasty shop? I can't think of any other reason it would have been voted the best. The pastry wasn't what you'd usually expect from a pasty (it was more like a thin, slightly chewy hot water pastry which you'd get on a pie in an East London pie and mash shop), however that I didn't mind too much, what with me also being a lover of a good pie and mash. It certainly didn't resemble the nice flakey looking pasties in the images on the website. Before anyone says 'you cooked it wrong!', I'm a very experienced and very good cook that has dabbled in and well executed pretty much every cuisine you could imagine (including making my own pasties). If that's not good enough, my chef son was with me in the kitchen at the time and I'm pretty sure between the two of us we could follow the instructions on how to cook these pasties. Regardless of the pastry, where these pasties really fell short is the filling. While the flavour was quite nice, It only had maybe 15% beef, but calling it 'beef' is being generous! It was mostly gristle, in fact, every single piece of beef (whenever we were lucky enough to find a bit) was mostly gristle! No, I'm not exaggerating, literally every single lump or 'meat' was gristly. It was a nightmare for my poor husband who has lost all his teeth thanks to diabetes. My son - with his full set of gnashers - also struggled to chew his way through his pasty. Even our cat turned his nose up at it and he'll eat pretty much anything you put in front of him! They clearly source the cheapest possible meat for their pasties, certainly not 'the finest beef' they claim to use. All three of our pasties were the same, so it wasn't a case of someone getting unlucky. I'm no fan of that big brand pasty/pastry company beginning with 'G', but I'd rather be served up one of their poor excuses for a pasty that one from this place. Even supermarket own brand pasties are better than what we were sent! They still managed to get 2/5 from me, just because I quite liked the pastry and the flavour of the filling was decent. I certainly wouldn't order them again.

Thought I'd give a try again as was dissapointed before. And is the same, not very nice at all now. Very mushy potato and mostly potato, no pepper at all like it used to be years ago. Was bland and mushy. I only tried as The Proper Pasty Company next door had no large ready for 10 minutes. And they are lovely pasties compared to Ivor Dewdney likewise Malcom Barnecott much better. It used to be visit Plymouth and have an Ivor Dewdney pasty. I wouldn't recommend it.

This is my second review on the Stoke Village pasty shop after using them for several months now. Just can't fault it. I phone them up and order our pasties an hour in advance. Really pleasent staff that are more than happy to take my order. Collected the pasties on the agreed time and they are always ready for me. They are always really hot and freshly cooked to order. These pasties are just fantastic! (We order the giant pasties). The pasties have a really awesome taste and plenty of traditional filling inside them. I would say they are the best pasties in Plymouth! And I've tried several pasties in my time, but Ivor Dewdney's come out by far the best! I would definitely highly recommend these pasties. It's my weekly treat that I always look forward to.

God I am fed up with this place. Why but why can't you ever get a hot pasty anymore. They always taste like they have been in a very lukewarm oven for the last 4 hours. Soggy and lukewarm and disappointing. People used to queue round the block for this tasty pride of Plymouth delight but now it is a pale shadow of it's former glory. The 2,000 seagulls at least, didn't get their beaks burnt!

We tried to get the same food but the woman was quite argumentative and rude. Basically said we do not do it anymore. Always walked past here but my first time trying their pasty (usually I go to Malcolm Barnecutt or others). It's a pasty shop that's been opened since 1935. Got a giant pasty and I was surprised how good it was. The pastry has salt on it so can be salty to others (mine had the right amount) and I felt it help with the taste. The meat and veg ratio was good. It just felt like a good Devonshire pasty! And I got full. Its was nice and hot for the cold weather and the price felt right

Unfortunately this was the worst pasty I have ever had from Ivor Dewdney. A few hours later a stomach ache ensued. Very poor quality

Whilst the only real pasty Ivor Dewdney serve is the Pepper Pasty (meat, onion, swede & potato), the others are in fact a pasty Lie! However whilst I usually prefer a lighter pastry than that of a shortcrust, and I realise thats hypocritical as Short is the traditional housing for the ingredients, i do enjoy the pastry that Ivor dewdney make. Its not dry or heavy, and its not too light in which you loose most of the pastry as it breaks away whilst eating it. The regular pasties here are bland and boring due to the lack of swede and seasoning in thier fillings, and although the pepper pasty has much to improve on, the addition of that essential ingredient (swede) the pastry does do this pasty enough justice for me to use this as an acceptable snack if im out and hungry.

I only ever eat the vegetable one - which are available for a few hours each day and are not baked through the day like the meat ones - and they are always excellent. They have a hearty taste with a beautiful pastry. I always want more. I have been eating them for decades and still love them. The staff in the shops are traditionally aggressive and miserable, but that's just the way it is. Try a pasty - they're great!

Best pasty you will ever taste. Devon pasty, not Cornish, hence less pastry and more filling.

I’ve had many pasties in my time and I must say, Ivor Dewdney’s are at the top. While Oggy Oggy and Friary Mill are adequate; nothing quite beats an Ivor Dewdney. I’ve travelled the length of the country to have one of these numerous times and they never disappoint. 10/10 would recommend
