On a positive - good location and nice atmosphere in downstairs bar. Food was really mediocre and expensive relative to the quality- burgers less good than Spoons and twice the price, fish and chips average and fish cakes so poor that they weren't eaten- we raised this with the waitress who spoke to the chef who apparently said they were fine- I suppose food is very subjective. If you want decent food go somewhere better, if you want mediocre food go to Spoons.

Visited with friends after a frantic time with a wedding the week before. Just looking for a place to enjoy good food, good atmosphere and relax without being rushed. Was not disappointed. There was live music and the evening was sunny and warm adding to the atmosphere. Didn’t bother with starters as we knew the main courses would be satisfactory. The portions are large. The dressed crab with fries was superb, a side order of the onion rings is a must, delicious. Highly recommend this restaurant, we ended the evening having a drink outside in one of the little sheds downstairs. £200 for four people, but a really nice evening. Recommend booking though.

A group of 12 of us stayed nearby for a week, and we ate at the Instow Arms on Sunday night. Service was friendly and efficient, especially given the large group. Ironically, everyone was really happy with their meal except me. I had chicken fajitas, a meal I order regularly in various places. I can't say there was anything wrong with the taste as such, but the chicken, peppers etc was very 'wet'. Far too much juice, which made it quite tricky to eat. Overall good though and we were too full for dessert.

Seems a very inviting Place from the outside menu was good and food was delicious. Unfortunately I cannot say same about we assume was the manageress if the restaurant. She had short blonde hair. Her attitude to us asking very politely to move two places from one table to join our family birthday meal was like I’d asked her for the whole area to be accommodating for us only. The rest of the staff were brilliant couldn’t do enough for you and were quite apologetic to me about the seating arrangement. We all had lovely meals and all came out together hot and delicious. I felt my family experience for me personally was tainted because of her stubbornness and lack of customer focus.

Fantastic location close to the beach. Sat outside as it was a lovely day although unfortunately for us the sand dunes on the beach were being maintained and it was really windy so we had sand everywhere but we were protected by the little huts outside so all good . Not the fault of the restaurant, obviously. Anyway the staff were friendly, the food was really good, my fish was a bit greasy but I ate it anyway. Chips were great and husband enjoyed his chicken burger. Will definitely go back next time we’re in the area. Dog friendly.

We stopped here for drinks and a bit to eat while cycling on the Tarka Trail. Instow Arms has areas between the outside seating to park the bikes and keep an eye on them. We just had burger & chips and drinks. Food was great and fast. Staff were friendly. The inside to the pub was really nicely decorated and very inviting. Definitely a good choice to go for an evening meal.

On our last day in Appledore, we walked the dogs along the beach at Instow and had breakfast before departing for home. The staff were really nice and the quality of the food was excellent.

Went to the Instow Arms today for lunch, very nice inside very courteous staff and efficient . Ordered beef burger and chips, came looking good, I must admit that I ate most of the burger before noticing it was not cooked properly inside. I left it. When our waitress came to take the plates away I explained why I had left some, she apologised profusely, I said that was fine didn’t want anything else and left it at that. When we went to pay the bill she only charged us half the price of my meal. Excellent customer service methinks, THANK YOU GUYS.

We were staying in Appledore and took a quick trip to Instow and chose to have dinner at The Instow Arms - we were not disappointed at all. We hadn’t booked - I advise you do. The restaurant was full, but we were happy to sit outside in one of their huts - they have heating and even though it was quite cold and windy, it was cozy in the shelter of the hut. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The food arrived very quickly and was piping hot. It was excellent value for money and very good quality. If I had to find something to criticise, it would only be that the portion size was very big (even though I have a fairly good appetitie).

This is such a great location, we managed to sit outside in the evening sun for a drink before heading in to the table we’d booked upstairs. All of the staff were helpful particularly the guy on the bar with the a nose piercing who seemed on top of things on what was a very busy evening. Couldn’t fault the food, we had the fish and chips and the seared duck breast with rice noodles and vegetables. The fish was huge and really tasty with a good portion of chips and a very generous portion of peas. The duck was delicious, cooked just right, tender and tasted very gamey, this came on a bed of rice noodles mixed with vegetables and was particularly more’ish. Congratulations to the chef, great food. This is the second time we’ve eaten here in the past few months the first occasion being a family gathering and everyone commented on how good their meals were. Instow Arms is clearly doing something right, we definitely give it a big thumbs up :)

After looking at reviews we decided to try this pub for a roast dinner and what a fantastic choice. We all had a roast and the chef absolutely knows how to cook brilliantly. Beautifully tender meat, roast spuds to die for and perfectly cooked vegetables. Portion sizes meant the meal was value for money, and the view was fabulous. We are lucky enough to eat out regularly and the waitress was one of the best servers we have had, she worked so hard and her customer service was faultless. Sorry did not catch her name but she did say she worked there at weekends and a nursery in the week. Can’t wait to make a return visit on our next holiday.

We are local and this is definitely our favourite pub for taking friends, family and visitors. Sadly, today's visit was below par, especially as it was for the four of us to celebrate my husband's Birthday! I chose the Vegetarian Burger (costing £18!) Before ordering I checked what the burger was made if, having had a bad experience with a 'home-made' burger before. I was told it was made of Soya, which sounded ok. However, it wasn't Soya, but a mash of vegetables put in a breadcrumb - not very nice and not what I was expecting! My friend chose the Cod & Chips (£16.50) and the batter and fish were over-cooked - and in fact after tasting it, I agreed the fish was dry and tasteless! When the Manager came to clear our plates we politely commented, but no apology was forthcoming, she just said she'd tell the Chef. When the bill came (£150.00), we noted that only 10% had been deducted from each of our meals ie £1.80 and £1.65!!! We were hoping for an offer of a couple of free drinks, at the very least, but this was basically insulting considering the money we were spending! All I can say is it's left all four of us feeling dissatisfied and disappointed which is a shame as normally the food and service is very enjoyable and a place we look forward to visiting!

Our experience started off great, we were let in earlier than our booking and the starters were lovely.Ordered chicken and chorizo tagliatelle which was nice but rich. Venison burger had a strange taste and was not as good as expected. Ordered cheesy garlic bread and onion rings as sides, and lets just say they both oozed grease. Our garlic bread came with no cheese so we asked for it to be taken back and for them to bring us what we ordered. Clearly the chef didn’t take this well and on its return the garlic bread was smothered in grease and a thick layer of cheese which was so off-putting.Waiters seemed to be used to people complaining as our complaints got brushed off.Overall very disappointing.

We are in Devon on holiday, have visited the Instow Arms twice this week and cannot fault the food and staff, the first time we had fish and chips and roast beef dinner, my husband actually said it was the best roast dinner he has ever had ( and he has had a lot) on Monday we order seafood tagliatelle and chicken and chorizo tagliatelle, both meals were gorgeous, the restaurant was very busy, the staff worked so hard, not much of a wait for the food but to be honest if you want decent freshly prepared food the wait is expected, I’d be worried if it arrived in 5 minutes !! Hope to go again this week before we go home but if not will be back next year, in these horrendous covid times for the hospitality trade they are doing an amazing job, training new staff etc, good luck for the future, a great place to have a meal out, wish we lived nearer

They've certainly gone all out for lockdown lite, having built little wooden "booths" up the side, each with their own heater. 10/10 for effort, but the outcome is that the heaters are too powerful, heavily toasting those sitting on the pub side whilst those on the inside barely feel the benefit.Food was pretty dire. I had a smallish piece of cod that was grey inside and soggy batter on the outside. The fat chips were definitely homemade, but unfortunately by someone who doesn't know how to make chips. Slow fried from raw until dark brown and not remotely crispy. Another fry for 90 seconds in very hot oil would have done the trick.Service started OK but vanished as the evening wore on. We thought they'd closed, but on venturing to find a staff member, discovered they hadn't.Not brilliant.

So overall this place is in a great setting looking out over the estuary. Some niggles Food quality is really good (even though I choose the wrong thing).Couple of things to note :-1) if you book a table it’s inside so don’t expect to be sitting on the sun terrace at the front.2) service was great with one exception. We were told once we had been seated and the food had been delivered to go and get our knifes and forks.3) i could not find any napkins4) payment you have to go in and pay. A bit of a pain if it’s busy as you have to wait. Also when we went to pay the people on the table before hadn’t paid so we were going to get charged for it. It did get sorted but my advice here is they should for outside dinners / drinkers pay up front Overall it’s a nice place and I will come back but a few niggles.*I had the tagliatelle Arrabiata which is more like Olives with some pasta. I don’t like Olives and the menu doesn’t say.

My hubby and I booked a meal at this pub whilst in North Devon on holiday. We chose this pub as the reviews were good, it seem to have good Covid practice in place and it was also dog friendly. So many places that call themselves dog friendly can often be dog tolerant. However, the Instow Arms were very welcoming to our dog! Like many people, we are very conscious of how clean an establishment is and how the Covid rules are observed. We were on a pre-booked table, tucked away in the corner of the pub and the pub tables were spaced out. The drinks and food orders were done via table service. The food was really flavoursome and well presented. We had the mushrooms and chicken wings to start with and then chicken supreme and mussels for our mains. Very good sized portions, and thoroughly enjoyed! We shared a cheesecake dessert, couldn't manage one each! With drinks our meal came in at just under £70, which we felt was really good value for money. We will definitely return again when we are next in the area. Only small negative, is that parking can be challenging- top tip.. plan ahead and leave yourself plenty of time to get a parking space!

We came to celebrate a 17th birthday meal and were highly disappointed with the service we were given today. We received a very poor greeting when we arrived, limited table service when seated, we were squashed very close to the next table (back chairs touching each other) which made us anxious due to the social distancing rules. We understand that it was busy but we have seen it much busier being local, We expected much more than what we received. Our drink order was taken , but were very delayed coming out (over half an hour) even though we were seated beside the bar. We had to ask for them where our order was to, but were told there was an internet problem but no apology was made. We then had some food come out which turned out not to be ours, we were sat there 10mins before anyone came over to acknowledge that the two dishes they had placed on the table were not ours. They were finally taken away but no one mentioned when our food would arrive. Finally our food started to arrive on the table, but a black hair was noticed in the sauce so was asked to be taken back, the man took it from me without acknowledging what I had said and walked off to return with another. We had to wait further for the cutlery to be brought over but when it did we didn’t have enough. No one came to check to see if our food was ok, we were actually missing a starter dish. After we finished we manage to get someone’s attention and make it clear that one dish never came out but not to worry as we had finished and it wasn’t wanted anymore. No apology was made here either. We paid the bill which came to about £100, but no effort was made to see if we were happy with our visit or food. We are really disheartened by our visit as we have been plenty of times and enjoyed our visit. We were very disappointed by the service and the manner of the staff tonight.

There were several different roasts on offer for £12, together with a smaller option for £7, plus a side option of further potatoes, pigs in blankets, etc for a small extra charge. To be quite honest, apart from a couple of potatoes and a slice of meat, the small plate was not much bigger than the larger version, and they also provided veg separately in dishes served to the table for everyone to share. The food was delicious and well cooked with enormous home made yorkshires - what's not to like! The only one grievance if I was going to be picky was that maybe they could have given a little bit more gravy, but don't let that detract from the fabulous meal we had.

We were looking for some pub grub and popped in after a long day of walking, we didn’t expect anything special but they totally blew our expectations. The food was something I’d expect from a modern bistro, delicious and plentiful. The waiting staff couldn’t have been more accommodating and came by the table regularly to check on us and see if we wanted any drink refills. Make sure you book in advance as it can get busy, especially with Covid measures in place.

Stayed in the delightful village of instow for 3 nights and made the mistake of going into the village for food, then we found the Instow arms....wow what a awesome place, location brill, food was delicious, tasty and spoilt for choice....so many things on the menu I could have chosen but opted for the fish and chips and oh dear Lord was not dissappointed. Hubby had the pan roast salmon which he thoroughly enjoyed. My only regret is I had no room for pudding , they looked so good. The staff are delightful and very efficient, not cheap but also not pricey about right I would say. Wine list is good and a nice selection. Would definitely recommend and come back.

We had Sunday lunch which included a nut roast meal and salmon and vegetables plus puddings. As always the meal was first class served by excellent staff in a COVID Safe environment. The popular upstairs room has amazing views and where possible would recommend that meals are booked in advance. A highly recommend venue.

Never ate her but it wasn't for the lack of trying. To book a table they have a silly system of phone up, get given options, then push 1 and wait for the call to be answered. Tried so many times. Eventually got through to a human who, whilst I was asking about availability, put the phone down on me.Well done. Tried a few more times before giving up. Guess what, I doubt I'll bother again.

Were seated both nights at a table in the window with a lovely view over the estuary watching the sunset. The staff were efficient and friendly. The food was very good and well presented.Would use again if in the area.

We booked in advance and OMG what an amazing meal we had! I ate the tastiest mussels with wine and garlic I've ever had. Kids were so happy from their fish and chips. Dessert was amazing. I now only remember feeling so full and satisfied for 2 days! Amazing food, thank you.

Decent food, good service but we left early as no social distancing in the bar, no masks for people at the bar and people were rubbing up against us as we ate and they ordered food. Two tables to many in the bar area.

We visited the pub for a spot of lunch yesterday, we queued for 20 minutes to get to the bar, when we got there I asked for a menu as there were none on view, I asked if they did light meals and was told we would have to have a starter of something, at that point the barman intervened and told me if I could not make my mind up I was to rejoin the back of the queue, he was VERY rude to me, I was very insulted in front of all the other patrons, we left and will never return and I will be passing on my woes to all I know, terrible service.

These guys rescued us and found us a table for 2 following a very wet cycle ride. They squeezed us in during a very busy period and were great. 2 floors, we sta upstairs which offers great views of Appledore. One way system was in place due to covid but it was fine. Didn't wait long for food, the crab meet small plate was delivious and the camembert small plate is certainly enough for 1. Side of garlic bread and onions rings and look at the size of it!!! Impressive and tasted delicious. Main menu offers larger plates of pasta, burgers etc. Seafood is my recommendation though! Thanks guys, we enjoyed ourselves whilst drying off!

Quite clean, but a very long wait for both mains & desserts. Some meals were better than others; i had quite greasy and over-battered fish and undercooked chips, the burgers were better. A limited range of desserts available, but those we chose all tasted nice...

We went to the Instow Arms for a family meal out. The waiting staff were very friendly and polite. However the wait for food was extremely long. For over an hour no food appeared to leave the kitchen. Some meals were delicious however they all felt like the lacked something. No bread with the muscles, no salad with the tart ect. The mains themselves were very tasty, but nothing special or unique. Just to note - the Eton mess was 90 % squirty cream with strawberry syrup - avoid. There was a nice atmosphere but the food didn't quite reach expectation.

Wonderful! We had a vegan in our group who was really happy with the menu options. The staff were very friendly and professional and the manager was clearly on top of things. We will absolutely be going back when next in town. The food was excellent. We literally had no complaints and would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Location wise excellent. Unfortunately, this tired old looking pub has definitely seen better days! Need of major investment, but it would definitely be worth it. Years ago, this pub was full of customers all of the time.

What a gem of a find. Lovely quirky little pub. My wife is a coeliac, and most of the main courses on the menu were gluten free. Delicious food, very friendly staff. We had the added bonus that the local folk band were practicing, so great food, nice chilled music & lovely surroundings. Definitely a 10/10.

Me & my partner came here on 5/9/24 on a very rainy day. We both grabbed a little drink and a treat here and relaxed in the lovely cafe after a long wet walk from Croyde bay. The staff here were wonderful and all really lovely! The millionaires shortbread was the best I’ve ever had and the cheesy chips were delicious! There is a wide variety of drinks to choose from, both hot and cold. Really lovely vibes and will definitely come here again!

Bad first (not that bad ..😆) A bit old and dated, dispite the newish tile panelling Batter was nice but a little oily on the fish (soaked into the batter) The good.. HUGE battered fish - (suggest you just get the small one) cooked perfectly Sirloin steak was tender and cooked perfectly (ordered medium) I was pleasantly surprised on the quality, as it's a basic takeaway with a restaurant attached and it was under £20, so no top steak restaurant - but kudos to the chef, best £20 steak I've had, and better than some classier $$$$ places I've been, For that £20 I also got onion rings (perfect), salad - quality greens, few cut up bits of capsicum a couple of mushrooms, tomato, fried tomato too and plenty of chips cooked perfectly and very nice. (but best chips in UK I've had is at Lochgilphead - Scotland) Constructive criticism only - I was VERY happy given the price, Way better than a lot of places I've been to so far in the UK, and would definitely eat the same dishes again. Staff were friendly... This is at the end of the tourist season too. (Oct'24)

One of the best Sunday carveries that we have experienced, with a wide range of vegetables & meat; welcoming staff, especially Kim & Wendy, nothing was too much bother
