Insomnia in Derby

My husband & I have always loved our visits to our local Insomnia that has always been welcoming & a cheerful atmosphere as well as great drinks! Unfortunately on this occasion we were kept waiting while the server busied himself wiping down the shelf right in front of us, only stopping to tell us the café closes at 4pm Sunday times - it was only 15:05 No greeting, no smile as he asked what we wanted... I ordered hot chocolate & was told there was no cream... No apology or explanation... If I wasn't so desperate for a hot drink & a sit down, I'd have left the shop as I went to sit doen & waited for my husbandtobring our drinks.... One of the other servers came to clear a table next to ours so I took this opportunity to ask her if her colleague Partick was alright as I shared how unwelcoming he'd been towards us... We weren't expecting her response... "He's fine." No apology, just "he's fine" & rerurned to the serving area... Maybe the staff were having an 'off day', even though one of the servers was really kind towards my husband bless her as she took the time to explain why there wasn't any cream & hadn't been any all over the weekend... My husband’s coffee was fine & my hot chocolate was really really tasty, just wasn't hot enough so I was able to drink it in one go, so I ordered another & asked the lady who cleared the table next to us if it could be hotter this time as I explained how my previous one although very tasty wasn't that hot, again, no apology, just "so tou want it extra hit?"... Unfortunately although my drink was hotter, it lacked flavour so I didn't finish it. Not a good experience, but hey, like I said, maybe some of the staff were having a 'bad day'. Hopefully it'll be a better experience next time.

This was mine and my friends first visit to this local coffee shop and we have mixed views.. We found a table but it was dirty and full of cups and leftover food. The staff that were working didn’t bother to come and clear and clean the table, so I just moved the dirty cups etc to another table that already had other dirty pots on it. I didn’t have to queue for long before I placed my order - medium cappuccino, medium Chai latte, a fruit scone and a carrot cake slice. The person that took my order was not particularly engaging or polite. He presumed that I was paying by card but I was paying cash, this seemed to bother him. The please and thank yous were lacking… Our coffees were nice, they could have been hotter. The sweet treats were okay. The fruit scone had been warmed up, this was a nice touch but the carrot cake slice was dry, maybe it was past its best… The above order came to £13.80 and I would say that it was overpriced for the quality of the drinks and the sweet items. Also the service was not a friendly and welcoming one. We might try it again because it is quite local to us and it is dog friendly. It would be great if the staff could be welcoming and engaging.

I would never visit another insomnia again. I asked for a drink with an extra cup. The coffee took over 15 minutes to make which wasn’t an issue however, at the end when presented with my coffee I asked for an extra cup to be told they cost too much. I then asked the manager for the complaints procedure to be then told I need to leave the shop! Couldn’t even finish my cup of coffee. The service here is disgraceful, shocking and rude towards its customers

Nice enough venue for a coffee but very few staff so had to queue quite a while to order and then get our drinks. Really think that more staff are needed in order to keep on top of things.

Coffee machine wasn't working so chose a cold drink - Cloudy Lemonade. It was awful 😖 just a bit of acidic cordial mixed with water and ice cubes. Served in a plastic glass and it was £3.95.....I do not recommend Insomnia as there are far better places to spend your money

We probably ended up going on a bad day as the coffee machine was not working. We had to wait despite there being 3 members of staff - 2 just chatting about the coffee machine whilst 1 seemed to do all the work. £2.50 for a tea, which constituted a small tea bag and hot water in a large mug (we were able to help ourselves to milk, etc.) Unfortunately, we chose the table near the back, which we later realised was where the staff from the adjacent Co-op and Insomnia used after getting drinks. At one point it was very loud when ? a manager was talking to staff immediately behind us. I would give it another try but, first impressions not great.

Havent visited in a long time but had such a lovely time here today. The member of staff and manager working were both very friendly and made us feel very welcome. I asked if they had any colouring and paper for children and the member of staff didnt stop at no im sorry we dont, he went out of his way to go and see if the manager had any at all. She didnt but 5 minutes later came back with some she got from the shop for us. Very accomodating. Will happily return

I visited with a friend for a coffee & some lite breakfast for the 1st time, upon arrival we were met with a large queue with one staff member working albeit working very hard but alone which is not ideal given the size off this coffee shop is huge compared to others & in a busy spot! It was cash only on this day which was not ideal as i waited in the queue only to be told this after 10mins off waiting so i had to use cash machine outside Co-op then rejoin the queue, this could have been avoided if there was a simple sign on the entrance to state this! We didn't bother with breakfast as we didn't have enough cash as we intended to pay on a card so we just purchased 2 coffee's, the coffee was good quality & good size. Although it's a large coffee shop (better than the usual Costa & Starbucks) the spaces were mostly taken up by workers, people working on there laptops etc which meant it was difficult to find a good spot, most off these people were not consuming much, in fact i saw one guy bring his own sandwich which is naughty as that doesn't support the local business & he had the cheek to buy a small coffee and use there wifi to do his work! Won't visit again in a hurry as plenty of other options around Derby given the staffing issues! Pro's Plenty of free car parking, big cafe, nice ambient, better that the big brands

Today I went to Insomnia for a coffee and a little lunch with my friend. Tom welcomed me and said he hadn’t seen me for a while. Tom is such a lovely friendly young man. Extremely passionate about his coffee and very knowledgeable. Littleover really needed a coffee shop. Thank you so much Tom 😀
