Been on my bucket list places to eat at for a long time and was pleasantly surprised. It’s your standard canteen style affair with a good choice of regional staples, a vegetable option meats and bread. The spice level is mild/medium and on the smaller size but put together it’s adequate. Very flavourful and authentic, price wise very reasonable for central London and very popular with locals.

I was so looking forward to this having been trying to cook Indian and Pakistani food for over fifty years and having visited India for five lengthy holidays. I love Indian food, especially Bengali and Gujarati. The first issue was that as we were waiting in line for the buffet service (good idea) we were issued with a large chapatti and a plate of white rice which could also have been a bad pillau. Quite clever. Too much food for lunch and £4.80 or £5.50 already on to the bill. The chicken dish I ordered was pretty average, not dissimilar to a straight mild chili dish and my dining companion enjoyed her chicken curry. The high spot of the lunch was the Onion Pakora. She also had a sambar dish which was good. On our next visit we will go for the vegetarian and south Indian food with extra Onion Bhaji. The sixty pence for a tiny quantity of pickle was disgraceful. We will come back but will go for the vegetarian / south Indian items but, all in all, it was a bit overpriced for what it was and a bit cheeky with some of the items. And there weren't that many Indian people there.

Had been meaning to drop in here for quite awhile after hearing about it on the grapevine. It now costs £13 a head which you pay at reception. The staff put the food on your plate in the canteen area and choice is severely limited/non existent. I found a table on the quiet outdoors area which is lovely on a summer day. Onto the food…oh dear… this was really poor quality, the rice was mushy and limp, the curries were far from inspiring and the butter milk pretty meh. A small piece of chicken tasted good though. Overall not a good meal at all and even at £13 it felt overpriced. It tasted like mass produced canteen food so unless that’s your expectation, I would strongly recommend that you avoid this place.

I had read about the ymca dining hall in a tourist handbook and had been meaning to try it for a number of year. Finally on this visit we were able to visit....we shouldn't of bothered on arrival you pay £11 each and tale the receipt to the counter where staff slop food onto a metal prison style tray. We had no idea what each spoon was supposed to be. It consisted of a cold lentil water,a undercooked chicken curry, raw meatball in sauce and a decent chapati. We had paid been served tried to eat some and had left within ten minutes. Indian is favourite food and have ate at many Indian restaurants including street food style and the best little ones you find hidden down side streets but this honestly was awful Avoid

Visited the YMCA Indian restaurant having tried this an year ago. Consistent quality of food, flavoursome but not too spicy in the heart of London. This is how home cooked food mimics in most homes in India. Far better than most so called Indian restaurants and take aways. Keep it up team. Kudos to all of you!

When we were in London in 2020 we walked past here an dsomeone coming out told us how great the food is. So in Ocober 2021 we decided to try it before getting the train home. Such a find - we had 3 onion bhajis to share, a chicken curry, a wonderful fish curry, dhal, rice each and I had a mango lassi. There were jugs of water on the table, it was incredibly clean and there was plenty of choice. It cost £22 for the 2 of us, such great value.

A canteen that serves tasty food in a nice friendly atmosphere. An all you can eat lunchtime weekend buffet was £9 including rice, chicken curry, cabbage, dahl, curried vegetables, pickles, potatoes, lassi, tea, coffee, and poppadoms. It's a no frills help yourself setup and don't be expecting expensive cuts of meat or super vegetables but the flavours are good and authentic. In this part of London it's a bargain and maybe even rarer you leave the place absolutely stuffed if you want. The chefs are friendly, helping you out if you look a little lost and you feel welcome in a canteen that seems filled with happy people having happy conversations.

Breakfast and dinner came complimentary with our stay at the YMCA hostel. We loved the food. We used to have a sumptuous breakfast and dinner and they would change the menu everyday. Just that they are very strict about the restaurant timings and there was no room service available although they did alllow takeaway. Lunch cost £9 if someone opted for it.

I used to live round the corner in the 1970s and discovered this place. Been coming here ever since. It's real tasty Indian food made by Indian chefs for fellow countrymen and women. Basically a student canteen with formica topped tables, jugs of water but no booze and good selection of no nonsense Indian food. Get here early for lunch otherwise some dishes will be sold out. Few minutes from Warren Warren Street tube and Tottenham Court Road. Curry club fans love it. And it's not expensive.

OK, the set menu is winning no prizes for variety of choice but the selection on offer covers mains, a cracking selection of sides and there's was an ice cream at the end to boot! I had read about the Indian YMCA canteen having authentic Indian food, so when I passed by one day I decided to try it for lunch. You arrive and grab a tray and can then choose various mains and side dishes. I had poppadum, fish curry, rice and vegetable. It was a lot of food for 8 pounds. One can take a glass and there are pitchers of water on the tables. It is a very casual setting like a hostel canteen, but a lot of local business people go there to eat.

The people working there are very pleasant and helpful but the food is average to below average. Okay it's cheap, but frankly Tesco curries are better. Yeah, I know it's a drag having to pierce the film lid and put them in a microwave, so I guess in that context it's easier to go to this dining hall. The staff were so so friendly, I'd recommend other London restaurants take a lesson from the chaps down at the YMCA. Meal has roti, rice, a meat dish, a veg dish, lentils and salad. It's buffet. There is a dessert at the end. 99% London restaurants charge you more than £8 for starter, let alone main course or dessert. The food is better than average. I came across this place by chance after seeing a photo on Instagram. It's not difficult to find, with the YMCA even warranting a sign on Tottenham Court Road when you exit and walk down from Warren St Tube.A large canteen-like establishment, you basically queue up, pick up a tray and select which item you want. The servings of curry are lined up already pre portioned. The heating system for the food could be a bit better, as my fish curry, which tasted great, was a little on the tepid side temperature wise. This was saved by the heat of the curry. The onion bhaji, however, was cold. I had two chapatti, which was probably one more than I needed, raita which was quite sweet, and a great mango lassi. The atmosphere is informal, with everyone at large communal tables, with jugs of water supplied at each table. All in all an enjoyable lunch.

This place is simply astonishing value. My chicken curry, onion bhaji, mint sauce, salad and chapati set me back less than £6! It was filling, spicy and tasty, especially the buttery masala sauce. Only downside is that, given the price, you're not going to be getting the best cuts of meat so the chicken was quite boney and one piece looked a little bit undercooked. Still, I'm now a big fan and will be back.

I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic Indian food and doesn't mind a canteen style environment. Theres a set price (all you can eat) in the evening, but you pay by the dish at lunch. Either way works out very cheaply. All the dishes have a different flavour and complement each other, resulting in a really satisfying meal. If I worked nearby I'd come here for lunch or breakfast everyday!

Indian YMCA is hidden on the back streeets but boy is it a find! It is a school canteen style place so everything is formica tables and food already dished out into serving bowls/plates which you then select from a counter and tables after joining a queue of equally keen eaters. Being a YMCA this was to be expected so dont go there expecting it to be fancy! The food portions were decent and cheap and most importantly good, I did find the chicken tika a tad dry but overall it was enjoyable. There are no labels on the dishes but the kitchen staff are happy to name the dish. For me, I will be back, I want to try the breakfast and I like the informal atmosphere, great find!

A little bit of India (including the chaos) in Fitzrovia. Very busy and no airs or graces, but wonderful, cheap food. I had the fish curry with rice and a side as well as bread. £7.50! Will be back for another boisterous lunch.

As I said, this place isn't going to win any awards for fine cuisine but what it does is satisfying and it is cheap. Last time I went I had a plate of tandoori chicken, a massive roti, a plate of Pilau Rice, Daal, Chicken Curry and Mango Laasi all for a tenner. The dining hall feels like an old school canteen and the food is plentiful if not the most tastiest.I would dine there again because for what is costs its the best you can have

Visited to get a quick curry before a business meeting. The curry was delicious, rice was a bit cold and salad a bit dry and bland. But a bargain meal. Cashiers and staff were very polite.

This place provides decent Indian food at Indian prices. But, there are days when the breakfast is just cereals or cornflakes, and not dosa.

Don't come here if you are looking for a haute cuisine experience -this is a canteen in a student hostel. However you would be hard pressed to find a filling meal that offers such value for money in this area. The menu is basic offering a few curries with rice and some extras. The portion of rice was enormous so we split one between two and each chose a curry. The lamb curry was packed with meat and the chicken version was also a generous portion. With a couple of massive poppadums and some pickle the meal came in at under £10 for the two of us. Whilst I wouldn't want to eat here on a daily basis it offers exceptional value for a filling meal in central London. There were quite clearly local (non Indian) businessmen and families eating here who knew about the place so the clientele is not exclusively Indian students. While it is probably not worth a detour if you want a cheap, filling meal and you are in the area do try it out.

i had not eaten here for over decade, but it is still great value, canteen style Indian food. I had a curried fish main course with bhajis, and a very nice mango lassi. The menu changes daily. A totally authentic experience.

We watched them win on TV during Covid and for 3 years I waited til I was in London to try this burger. We stopped at their Camden location and got the chicken burger. It was definitely worth the wait! It was huge and juicy and just overall delicious! We will be back in London this summer and will be stopping by for more!
