Indian Ocean Restaurant and Takeaway in Bournemouth

As a seasoned couple of a certain age 🤪 we have eaten Indians for over 40 years all over the uk. We stumbled on the Indian Ocean whilst staying in Bournemouth for the weekend. The service from entering to leaving was exceptional and we even got to chat to the amazing chef at the end of the night. The food was fantastic, one of the best, if not the best we have experienced. We had the poppodoms and pickles to start, these were non greasy, fresh and crisp and the yogurt dip was sooooooo good 👍 We then shared a prawn Madras, garlic naan, egg fried rice and a saag chana that the restaurant made specifically for us. It’s hard to explain the quality and taste of all of the food, except to say, flavoursome, fresh tasting, with generous portions and an abundance of prawns in the curry. A nice warm hand cleaner afterwards, chocolate mind and a friendly chat with the owner to be informed that the red had won a top Southwest award for excellence. Please visit this restaurant as you will not be disappointed. If I could give it more starts I would 👍

Fantastic food. Hot food and very delicious. Variety of menu and very tasty. We had a company dinner there. Staff were very friendly. The atmosphere was great. Definitely come back again.

I came here first in December 2023 while working locally and staying in a hotel nearby. I returned for a week's work this year and insisted on the hotel closest to this restaurant so I could enjoy it some more. As a vegetarian, I adore Paneer. Their Paneer Tikka main is the best one had in a very long time. Very generous portion, cooked to perfection and seasoned well. Friendly and attentive staff, lovely owner. On my return in 2025, its just as good as I remember. Staff recognised me and pretty much remembered my exact order.

One of the best Indian restaurants I've been to! Honestly, this Indian restaurant is a gem. The cuisine is incredibly fine, very well crafted and full of flavors. The prices are really fair, especially given the quality and generosity of the dishes. I was alone that day, but frankly, the portions were so generous that I could have easily shared with my girlfriend if she had been there. I had an absolutely delicious coconut rice, as well as a “tawa” (which was simply excellent). Little advice: don't be fooled by the fact that there aren't necessarily many people inside, because the quality is indeed there. Only downside: they don't serve lassi. But frankly, it’s a detail that doesn’t detract from the experience. If you like Indian cuisine and you're in the area, go for it with your eyes closed!

Generous and tasty cuisine, very friendly and attentive staff

Really poor, slow service. Seemed more interested in getting their delivery orders out. Drinks, requested lemonade but only had sprite in bottles. Bill arrived and charged £4.15 per bottle !!. Found the food rather bland and very expensive

I did my usual research before booking, as there are a lot of Indian restaurants to pick in Bournemouth. This one had many positive reviews and my favourite Level 5 for Scores On The Door. We went on a Friday night with a table reserved for 4 people at 7pm. We were the first people to arrive and all through the time we were there, it was very quiet. I cannot fault the actual restaurant and the food was excellent. The cheapest white wine on offer was £24.25, just FAR too expensive for such wine. The main person that served us, seems to be the owner or manager (not sure), but he was just very forgetful, especially when the place was almost empty !! We had to ask more than once for a few things. So I'm knocking two stars off my review, because there was no reason for this. We spent £130, shame the level of service did not reflect the pricing. Would we go again ? Yes, we would give it one more chance.

I got takeaway twice this week from here absolutely gorgeous delicious curry, hot and flavoured fresh rice and fresh hot naan. Very reasonable price and very professional and friendly staff. Fast and easy going service. Recommend if you are visiting Bournemouth and looking for a nice Indian restaurant to eat at!!

Visited Bournemouth with friends and booked in for four people Tuesday 25th November. Nice friendly greeting and the restaurant was very tastefully decorated. Chicken Pathia was as good as my local and King Prawn Jalfrazi was said to be spot on. My wife had the Mixed Kebab starter as a main meal and was very impressed. Generous portions (couldn't eat everything!). A really nice Indian restaurant. Highly recommended.

Good restaurant but very overpriced - obvious shocker being that plain rice is £4.15, pilau £5.15. Curries mostly around £17. So coming in alone for a meal and a coke, you're likely to spend £25. When most dishes in an Indian restaurant are (and by rights by could and should) be made in batch and sat there ready to serve up rather than made to order, it really is crazy money.

Food was cold, onion barges where greasy, madras was to hot, make it slight less & enjoy the flavours would be so much better.

Fabulosa comida, muy fresca y cocinada excelentemente, personal muy amable y servicial que te hace sentir muy bienvenido. Pedí tandoori parrilla mixta (deliciosa) y mi pareja tenía el Korai de langostino rey (que no hemos visto antes, y también estaba delicioso). También muy servicial con los niños - nuestro niño de cinco años le encantó el pollo tikka y quería ir a la noche siguiente, así que lo hicimos (estuvimos en Bournemouth por unos días). Muy recomendable, estaba ocupado en las tardes de lunes y martes cuando visitamos, así que probablemente es recomendable reservar primero si quieres visitar en un fin de semana.

I recently dined at Indian Ocean and had a delightful experience. The ambiance of the restaurant was inviting, and the service was prompt and friendly. For my meal, I ordered the egg fried rice and plain rice, both of which were well-prepared and complemented the main dishes nicely. The Chicken Madras was a standout; it was rich in flavor and had just the right amount of spice, making it a satisfying choice. Food was nice but arrived luke warm so had to heat it up. I ordered a curry with lamb, chicken and king prawn. Unfortunately there was only one single prawn. Poppadum also tasted stale/soft.

The restaurant was fairly busy and sevice was ok until they appeaed to have forgotton our drinks. Both of us found the main courses rather bland both from a spice viewpoint and also from a heat viewpoint: we asked for medium, but they seemed to be quite mild. At almost £70 (including the almost universal 10% service charge), it seemed overpriced.

I ordered Vegetable Biryani for take away which was easily one of worst biryanis I have ever had. I mean biryani is supposed to be full of flavours but it was bland, tasteless. It did not smell or taste like biryani, all I could taste was just rice and oil. The gravy served on side of biryani was unusual and it was tasteless too.

Food was great customer service was beove and beyond atmosphere was lovely and plenty of space between tables so felt private thank you guys!

I really enjoyed my dinner here. I had the tandoori chicken and saag bhaji, both were delicious, hot and they added extra chilli at my request.

We just had a takeaway from Indian Ocean, it was absolutely lovely. I had chicken tikka garlic chilli and my wife had king prawn pathia, both had great flavour and consistency. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

The staff acknowledged you straight away. When we made our choices we were asked for spice level. The food was lovely, we ordered vegetable biriyani, tarka daal and tawa chicken with tandoori roti. Would have appreciated some poppadoms whilst waiting for our food and maybe a bit of salad which is usually the norm in an Indian restaurant but anyway would go back here again.

An absolute delight! Visited with my mum over the August BH weekend for a dinner. Place was busy BUT - the owner himself and his team made sure all the guests were promptly attended to and looked after. The team/staff were polite and smiling. We personally enjoy the sizzling dishes and their fish tikka did not disappoint with soft chapatis, crispy poppadums, delicious pickles and chutneys. Will visit again if and when I go back to Bournemouth.

Was in Bournemouth for a long week-end and I'm so lucky this restaurant was on my doorstep. I'm a vegetarian and I thought the food was outstanding, one of the best I've ever had. The service was very good, and management very efficient. Nice and spacious inside. Price was very reasonable.

Very good and attentive service. Great! The food - here Chicken Vindaloo - was spicy but not too spicy. The chef came especially to explain the level of spiciness. Class! The location (busy street) and the ambience, including the music that was a bit too loud, were still ok. - overall highly recommended - 4.8 stars for me!

Visited on a busy Saturday night and was glad we had pre- booked. We both enjoyed our curries mine was lamb achari and I must say it’s the nicest curry I have had in a long time . My husband had chicken tikka shatkira which was also good. There were a few mistakes but quickly rectified, the garlic was burned in one dish, giving that horrid pungent taste, there was no hesitation recooking the dish. Then I was charged for a glass of wine I didn’t get, again sorted straight away. All in all a good night with fantastic food,

Went for dinner and ordered drinks first which was a Budweiser beer and lime soda. After taking few sips found that the beer was expired (on 31st July). Then i was told to get another brand instead. Ordered vegetarian kadhai paneer, okra curry as sides, garlic naan and tandoori roti. Kadhai paneer is very expensive 16 pounds and was not even close to kadhai panner taste. Okra curry was salty and okra was very bad quality and hard. Naan was hard and thick. So i would not recommend this restaurant for food at all and the negligence for serving expired products. The service was nice but the food is very average and expensive.

Came here as a birthday treat, we had only just been seated and hadn't even had time to look at the menu and the wait staff were hovering over us to take our order, (I appreciate being eager to serve but there's such a thing as breathing space). We ordered poppadoms, came with dips which was unexpected, the chutney was delicious however the mains took a very long time to arrive. Food was on par with take away, nice but nothing special the rice was large enough for two people in my opinion. Was given a hot towellette and an After 8 mint by the lovely lady working there, which i imagine was supposed to counterbalance the 10% service charge that was not advertised or explained at any point. Overall I would say it's overpriced for what you get and the man I'm assuming is the owner needs to stop making people feel rushed, it will lose you customers.

Ordered mattar paneer and naans for myself, but the curry was having very less salt making it less tasteful.. I am from India and in my lifetime eaten in many indian restaurants, therefore the expectation was high and also the time taken was quite high, almost 20-25 minutes for take away.

Reaturant was nice and busy when we arrived, we were shown to our seats promptly. Food was really nice and fresh and tasted amazing, interior and exterior is really nice and modern and everything was clean. Biriyani was a bit too greasy for our liking

What a fantastic restaurant! Arrrived at 8 without a reservation, and it was packed. We popped for a drink at the local pub The Hop and went back at 8.30 to be promply seated and served the most delicious indian cuisine evet. Fantastiv food, grest vibe, superb staff and service. Been here before a couple of years ago it was good then when visiting Bournemouth. Visited in July 2024 and the curry was delicious. So good we went back again 2 nights later for another one. Only gripe I have it’s a little bit overpriced. But the curry sauces and the chicken are Delicious. Highly recommend the Madras and Vindaloo. Even on a hot night! In Bournemouth for the day and we both fancied a curry before leaving. Choose this place due to it being the second highest Trip Advisor rated Indian in the area. The first was over in Westbourne and is part of the same ownership. Didn’t book given we planned to walk in at just after 5pm and it was a good sign that there were a few tables already there and people kept coming in steadily. It looked a clean and modern restaurant. Menus clear especially dietary requirements (gf especially important). Typical (to us) range of choices. Service was prompt and polite. We shared a couple of curries plain rice and I had a plain naan. For us the food was temperature hot and tasty and portion sizes were good. We were in and out in less than 90 minutes to begin our 3 hour journey home. Will definitely return in the future.

Excellent food & Excellent service

Asked for a mushroom korma, expecting there to be a small amount of mushrooms but it was loaded. Exactly what I wanted! Our whole meal was really yummy and we would come back again. Only downside is its a little pricey.

We visited the Indian Ocean Restaurant in Bournemouth with our family and had a terrible experience. The staff were extremely rude and inattentive. When we arrived, no one provided us with plates. We had to specifically request them, and even then, they only brought a few. We had to ask again to get enough plates for everyone. The starters arrived without any sauce or chutney. When we asked for these, they brought out large bottles of sauce in a very disrespectful manner. It felt like they were doing us a favour rather than providing good service. The staff, including possibly the owner, treated us poorly. They spoke to us in Urdu/Hindi, assuming we couldn't communicate in English. We hadn't spoken to them in Hindi/Urdu or placed our order in Urdu /Hindi, so this was presumptuous and inappropriate. Overall, our experience at the Indian Ocean Restaurant in Bournemouth was so bad that we decided to leave without having dinner. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, especially those from the Asian community, due to the rudeness of the staff.

Food was bland, service was very poor, staff were rude and the restaurant was very disorganised. Was not very busy when i went for my meal but overall i am not impressed and will not go there again. I was hoping for a 3 course meal but left after my starters.

3 out of the 4 dishes we had were alright. The last dish was horrible. We ordered TM and it tasted like ketchup!. The owner was very kind and gave a full refund for it. However the place is massively overpriced Vs the amount and quality of the food. We would have paid 98 pounds for 4 meals which were sub-par and one was awful. Won't return but thankyou for the polite attitude.

An ok Indian restaurant, food was ok can't fault it, didn't have any wow factor, standard fare. No real complaints.

Don't expect authentic Indian food, it's just plain and taste less food for Britons. Biryani is not actual biryani but chicken pulav.

The service was lovely and very catering for. The food looked delicious, however, the tofu must have been old or the chicken not as well cooked as I spent the evening throwing back up my food and I hadn’t had anything else for it to be anything other than this food. This is just a note to make sure the food is 100% in condition. At the time it was lovely!

Probably the best Indian meal we've had. We ordered the chicken tikka korhai and the masala. Both were delicious. Nan bread was so light and hot. The staff were very friendly and courteous. Beer was cold and fresh. Definitely recommend to anyone.

The food was lovely, full of taste. Staff were great, too. If anyone likes lime pickle, this place severs the best lime pickle I've tasted.

No indoor seating but the food was sooo very good we needed to give 5 stars all round. The outside isn't pretty but all our 7 take away meals last night were outstanding. Thank you so much, its been a pleasure

Eat here before food is good can't fault that however twice in a row now we have barely sat down and they hound you to order not even a drink offered as yet. Place was quiet so not sure on the rush. Literally every 2 minutes coming over and always walking by your table it makes you very uncomfortable. First time just accepted it paid a nice bill to tune of £130+ but last night this happened again I asked what's the rush we have just sat down not even had chance to look at menu and so it continued so we just paid for the drink we ordered and left. Such a massive shame as food is really nice. Sadly won't use again as not even an apology offered
