Huntsman's Lodge in Craven

Came here as part of a trip to Yorkshire and in need of some decent quality food. The view was stunning and didn’t disappoint. I ordered a serloin with red wine sauce and instead of fries and salad I asked for seasonal vegetables and my husband had a rump steak with red wine sauce. Unfortunately, mine arrived without veg and with the chips and salad. The staff were apologetic and took my food away to fix. However, by the time it came back the steak was chewy and not medium rare. More medium to well cooked with barely any pink! Whilst doing the veg it was as though my steak had been put under a heat lamp and dried out. I didn’t want to send it back again so just ate it and my husband was kind enough to swap for some of his steak although his was slightly over cooked as well. We did have dessert and the chocolate brownie was incredible, but sadly when spending so much with £15 of service added on, you do expect more from a meal.

So the View restaurant had to cater for a significant number of people arriving from the car club to which I belong, for a late Sunday lunch (4pm). The menu was fixed, a roast beef dinner followed by sticky toffee pudding. They carried this off very well, the roast was served immediately after we had taken our seats...the meat was tasty, and the vegetables properly cooked and the perfect accompaniment for a traditional Sunday lunch. We were certainly highly satisfied. The sticky toffee pudding was generous in size and very good to eat. Given the size of the group, I thought the staff did exceptionally well to get it all out whilst it was still hot. Very good indeed.

We’ve just had a lovely treat with our best friends, celebrating our golden wedding anniversary, dining in the View restaurant at Coniston Hotel. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was excellent. Our waitress Susan was just brilliant. She made sure we were well looked after and at the end of our meal she had organised for a lovely little “Happy Anniversary” plate with chocolates which was such a nice surprise to end off a very special afternoon. Excellent food, excellent service, beautiful restaurant and stunning surroundings 100% recommend and will definitely return

We had a delicious lunch on a table with an amazing view over the lake. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the staff were excellent. I had Camembert with tiny toasts made with different breads. My friend had a posh fish butty and chips. Definitely recommended. I’ll be trying them for dinner one evening,

From the moment we walked in the staff were the best we have come across. So friendly, so knowledgeable nothing was too much trouble. A bit upset at first in the restaurant as no short rib, was recommended the duck instead, was so glad it was out of this world so tasty. Husband had pigeon and venison which was equally good. All in all the spa day was excellent the staff also were brilliant, the brunch and lunch in the blossom was also excellent. So good we stayed the night. Keep up the good work you are all brilliant. Lovely views and excellent well kept location. Cannot wait to return.

Food - forgot water order, hard to get attention due to a party - got it myself after 25 mins from the bar. Drink heavy on small cube ice and watered down very quickly. This was a Friday night. We just ordered a Main. The kindest description would be adequate- we both ordered the short rib and for me it was slightly tougher than expected. Not so much fall apart as can I have a steak knife please. My wife had to leave half of hers as it was all gristle and the knife couldn’t cut through it. Mashed potato didn’t have a hint of any smoke to them. Sauces a little oily. Green Beans cooked by someone who hates vegetables and had attempted to boil them to death first before letting them spend minimum time in the pan with onions and garlic. Much the same with the tempura corn, overcooked to death. The Baby sweetcorn had been boiled to an inch of its life and then battered. Like eating damp cardboard in a batter that was more grease than fluffy and crunchy. Street corn was nice but only 2 and a half 2cm squares of it. Score - about 2 out of 5. Not inedible, but very little ability from the chef. I’d be as impressed with a McDonalds - after I’d found out that they had a broken milkshake machine and didn’t server chicken selects. The tomato salad was interesting. I had expected multiple tomato colours. Instead we got a minimal amount of coriander and pickled onion with two tomatoes of the same type chopped up. Less a salad and more here are two chopped tomatoes I’ve thrown a very small and insignificant garnish on. Allergy card very good idea - would be better if staff brought it to you as promised so you could check it before serving your food. No bread to tide you over. Dish serve time from order about 30 mins. Cost £90 for two mains, an OJ, an old fashioned, 3 sides, two sauces. Value for money 1/5.

Visited here with friends for a Sunday lunch. It was one of the most beautiful Sunday lunches I’ve ever had followed by a delicious brownie and ice cream. The place and surroundings are stunning and the staff were very friendly and attentive. Special thanks to Louise for sorting a slight problem with the bill so promptly. Can’t wait to visit again! Xx

The restaurant, hotel and spa are all absolutely lovely and it was a pleasure to visit the whole venue. I was extremely disappointed, however, with the meal in the restaurant. To say this is a 1 AA Rosette restaurant, the vegetarian options were quite poor and the flexibility around the evening menu was very limited. I had the Beets dish and this was completely dominated by the beetroot relish and mushroom 'soil' which took up well over half of the dish. I could not complete the dish and left the majority of the relish and 'soil'. To add to my disappointment, the waiter did not even ask if I was happy/unhappy with the dish and I had to offer my comments - which the waiter said he would pass on to the chef (and, of course, nothing further happened). The meal was just so completely dry, it was barely edible. I was offered the daytime lunch menu at the start to give me further vegetarian options but these just seemed to be standard pub grub fare, which contrasted with the fine dining options on offer to my meat-eating companion. I strongly recommend that the chef re-visits this dish or considers further vegetarian options.

It was gorgeous, the food and the staff were 10/10 worth every penny. The food becomes an experience in itself, simply lovely

2nd visit to the hotel for a spa break (last visit August 22...this visit March 23). Cannot fault the staff/welcome/cleanliness of hotel/spa facilities. Just a couple of niggles. We were not given any slippers for the spa. When I asked a member of the spa staff who was cleaning/collecting towels, she said that slippers were no longer provided. Slightly annoying as if we had known we would have brought our flip flops. Always a little wary when walking around the pool area in bare feet. Health & Safety issues etc... When leaving the spa I noticed some ladies just coming in who did have spa slippers on. I asked where they got them and they said they were given them at check in. Would be good if the slippers were left with the dressing gowns in the rooms where it is known that guests are on a spa break if they are in fact still provided? My friend who is vegetarian ordered the cauliflower steak which was quite hard. Don't think there was an alternative, but maybe a rethink on the veggie option.

Returned for lunch the day after re-opening after lockdown. Good as ever a changed menu with a Christmas menu which we had and it was first class. COVID protection is better than anywhere I have visited which is a bonus. Travel from Harrogate regularly and well worth it.

We had an excellent anniversary meal here, with grouse and pheasant on the menu. Service was great, and we felt very safe with the social distancing measures in place.

We had been given a voucher for “Afternoon Tea” at christmas& due to lockdown and various restrictions, we only got round to using the voucher now! We had a lovely afternoon. We were seated at three tables, for two people, spaced apart but still able to converse. The food was very nice & plentiful and as an extra we added chunky chips! Afterwards we went out onto the terrace to admire the lake. A really pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Absolutely spoilt for choice, was so hard to decide what to eat and picked what we were going to have for dinner whilst eating lunch. Quality of the food was really good and service excellent, felt absolutely safe and looked after.

Due to lack of a mobile telephone service we arrived at this venue with no prior booking, not helpful on a Saturday evening especially with the Covid-19 restrictions. Concierge very helpful and made enquiries for us and whilst there was no tables available inside we we were told that we could eat on the terrace which was semi enclosed with patio heaters. Having shown to this area we felt it would us well.Service was very good as was the food and it was not long before other tables out there started to fill up.We then booked a table for the next evening this time inside where we proceeded to have another great experience with food and service. Covid-19 precautions very much in evidence so we were suitably impressed.

We arrived at the restaurant on time and were greeted by the hostess. She said that there was only one table available (despite others having booked for 8pm) which was pretty much in the hallway and less than 1m away from the next table. We asked if this was the only table available and if we could move to another one. Straight away, she became very defensive and argumentative saying "I understand that you booked a table. This is a table". Firstly, I did not feel safe as it was less than 1m next to another person and secondly, we would have been happy to wait for another table to come available which she didn't think to ask. We proposed this solution and she rolled her eyes (once again) and said "I don’t know, I’ll have to check with the manager". It was very clear that she wanted to keep pushing back and kept biting her lip. This was meant to be a lovely meal celebrating our last day of our holiday but instead it made us feel really uncomfortable and upsetting that she ruined it. It's a real shame as the food itself was really enjoyable and the rest of the staff were fine.
