Ate here over 20 years ago. While the menu is less extensive than it used to be the options were well thought through and the restaurant remains a great fine dining experience. My wife has various food allergies and the waiting staff and chef liaised together to work out and through various options to ensure that she could still receive a meal that was enjoyable but nevertheless met her needs. Lovely relaxing environment too.

All in all, a nice venue, with a pretentious sounding menu, that severely lacks when it comes to delivering on expectations. This Restaurant is not mindful towards intolerances, and whilst willing to substitute, it will end up being an incomplete dish. My 2 courses could be summed up as over-seasoned rainbow trout, followed by a main of 5 thinly sliced pieces of overcooked duck breast, served with a slightly caught potato dauphinoise and a flavorless sauce. Expensive and not worth it.

Great seasonal menu - not extensive, but something for everyone in elegant heritage surroundings. We had dinner on two nights so trialled a fair share of the dishes! The home-cured salmon was especially good, as was the roasted sea bass, but we also enjoyed the chicken terrine and the steak and the mushroom risotto was also delicious. We had cheese the first night- it was tasty (and huge!) - was planning to try the desserts on our return visit, but just too full! Lovely staff too- big call out to Mark- his topiary skills were much appreciated!

Having recently moved into the area, tried out the Huntley restaurant for the first time. Ignore the previous post about it being closed. Although it closed during the lockdown it is definitely open now. The menu is quite limited, approximately 4 different starters, choice of 4 mains (one vegetarian) and 3 or 4 desserts. That said, all of them were quite tempting, and all our food was delicious. Service was excellent. Very friendly and attentive. Overall feel of the place is luxurious but somewhat old fashioned. Would definitely recommend and and will go back again.

Have been to Orton Hotel many times over the years and always eaten at the Huntly. It had nice food and we got friendly with the servicing staff and manager as we went so much. Unfortunately, the restaurant has now shutdown permanently. Personally, seeing empty the place has been the last few years - plus Covid - I'm not surprised. Shame, but I suppose that's they way things go

We had our baby’s baptism which we had planned for 1 and a half months. When we arrived they changed the room without telling us. We set our room that morning and we had left our cakes in the boxes to ensure no flies would sit on them. When we arrive mid afternoon we had noticed that they had been uncovered and that the cakes had a few flies near. We arrived at 5pm and we did notify them we would like to eat for 6pm while we had photos taken by our photographer. But they rushed us and cattle us in to our room. We had a party of 43. When being served our food, it’s was served table by table which was fine. However, when a table is waiting 15 minutes and everyone else has finished I think that is not acceptable. They did rectify it but it shouldn’t happen. When it came to cutting our cakes they said they would cut and serve them. This never happened. We ended up serving them without plates and forks, which we did ask for in the morning. No members of staff was available and we couldn’t find any. When everyone was leaving a member of staff came over and said “I’m sorry for your experience we quite under staffed”. If you know you have our party, main dinner service and another party in a different room you would think that they would prepare. Finally, you can not be served at the bar when they are serving food because they are that understaffed. Which mean you are then waiting between 20-30 for a drink.

We enjoyed very good food and service here - the setting is really beautiful and the architecture stunning. The Huntly restaurant is a separate part of the hotel much older than the front part and feels quite different to the front newer parts. On site is also the Ramblewood Inn which is the informal place to eat and drink in the hotel.

Phoned to book a table to celebrate family birthday but having spent 11 minutes on the phone listening to the music I still hadn’t been able to speak to anyone that could do this. Such a shame as we’d really wanted to celebrate there having attended a wedding reception at the establishment last year. Might try again next birthday celebration but have now booked a different restaurant for the six of us.

Despite ordering in advance they failed to get specifics correct and totally forgot about one of the meals... The starters were in the main OK, but the melon had clearly been sitting out for ages. The actual Pork Belly was really good, but the potatoes were dry little squares with zero taste, and as for the pickled veg... Let's just say I chose not to eat it. The desserts were top notch though. The service was appalling. The older gentleman could not hear a lot of orders and kept ignoring some drinks orders. Not that he ever came back offering another drink... And no, it was not busy! The other tables seemed to get much better service. The place is nice and the food is largely OK, but overall it needs more attention to detail on all the items of food and improvements in service.

Went here for my Father's b'day. Had read some mixed reviews so a little concerned but actually no issues, as the food was very nice and sensibly priced for the quality. Was a Saturday night and only one table wasn't taken. They had a big event on, so parking wasn't easy despite large car park. Basically a high-end restaurant in nice surroundings at a reasonable price.

Only one server but he did a great job. Very reasonably priced at £85 for two which included two rounds of drinks. The only irritant was the piano recording playing all night.

Stunning setting. Dates back to 1086. Thats 20 years after the Battle of Hastings. Fascinating place. Food was excellent. Brown onion soup to start was excellent and then the sirloin steak was cooked to perfection. The dauphinoise potatoes were probably the best I've had. Excellent choice of wines - 6 pages to choose from. Reasonably priced. Went for a rioja which was sublime. What a night.

It's such a shame that this restaurant is so underwhelming, as the dining room itself is absolutely gorgeous. Lovely old building been sympathetically restored and extended. On arrival we went into the bar, no bar staff, the door at the rear of the bar opened and someone looked in then went leaving us alone. Eventually a pair of bar persons appeared. After a drink we went into the dinning room which was very pleasant and well furnished the table settings looked nice. The room was very bright and could have benefited from lower levels of light. Our orders were taken, we weren't asked if we wanted water,or, any wine. We did ask for wine by the glass, it was delivered but redundant glasses on the table weren't removed. Food arrived promptly and was rather disappointing. My starter was a crab and cod dish (I can't remember the name it was given) but I could not taste fish at all it was so bland. Main course very ordinary, my lamb chops (2) were small served on mashed potato which was bland, black pudding was not the best quality and covered in an unidentified green vegetable which was very overcooked. The sweet menu was declared to be good by my sweet toothed companions, I opted for the 4 cheese selection which was a good choice, the cheeses were excellent.

As guests of the hotel, we were surprised to learn that the restaurant was full & we couldn't get a table. We arrived at the hotel at 5.50pm, but it was after 7 before they decided they couldn't squeeze us in - by which time it was too late to get in anywhere else either. I did try ringing round but to no avail, so I had to go to Reception and beg. Having had a long journey the last thing we wanted was to have to go out looking for a meal, especially when we don't know the area. Miraculously, but only after I had ended up in tears, a table was made available. We expected to walk into a restaurant that was packed out, with no empty tables. The opposite was true - there were more empty tables than occupied ones - so why we had to fight to get one was a little bewildering. The meal itself was very good, especially my Fillet Steak. The surroundings are very traditional, but the cuisine was modern, and thoroughly tasty. With one exception, the staff were very formal and not particularly friendly. And whilst the food was good, I would say it is probably about 20% overpriced.

Having stayed in the hotel for 2 nights, the first night we ate in the bar and it was very very average. So we decided to try the main restaurant. The food was very good, just the atmosphere was a tad stuffy and very formal for our liking. I fully understand some people like or even expect this, but the opera music style was a bit "grand" for what I enjoy. Great service though by the 2 young fellas working the room. Reasonably priced as well considering 3 courses were 30 quid and I spent more than that in the bar on 3 courses. The chorizo tart for starter was a highlight if I can give a pointer..... Give it a try (unless you are a veggie)! I never carry cash so was disappointed I couldn't leave a tip through charging the meal to my room, bear this in mind if you feel the service was a good as I did.

Stayed at the Orton Hall hotel with dinner package included. Good and varied choices for all three courses in this charming traditional dining room. The waiting and kitchen staff must be congratulated for a great evening meal. Our delights for three of us included: onion soup, mackerel, duck, chicken, pork, cheesecake and tangerine chocolate parfait - all cooked to perfection and mains served with excellent vegetables. The dishes are British with a modern/European twist and plentiful. We had three glass of wine (2 large 1 small) for a very reasonable £12.75 - the Merlot was especially good. Jugs of iced water and fresh flowers on each table. All staff were helpful and highly professional, with particular mention to the older ?Spanish waiter (see photo). The restaurant tries to seem like an up-market fine dining restaurant, but fails. Some of the staff are offhand and service was lacklustre. I ate there two nights running and my companions noticed the steak was overcooked the first night, so when I had it the second night, I ordered rare and it turned up a uniform grey. At least the helpful waiter gave me the glass of wine free and removed the surcharge for the steak. So in the end I can't complain about value. When I complained, the couple at the next door table said they'd complained too - about the dessert I'd just ordered. But actually mine was fine. The restaurant was in a quite large but mostly empty room, reached confusingly though another dining room that appeared only to be used a breakfast. A more intimate restaurant would have been much more welcoming.

In all this time we have found some fabulous places serving fantastic food and clearly it was getting harder to find somewhere new. However, when we found this place on the internet, which the photos just showed the dinning area, we had no idea of how well and nice the food was which was freshly prepared by fantastic friendly staff. Fantastic food at the Huntly restaurant, a credit to the chefs! I, along with my husband have travelled all over the world dining out in 5* hotels, so it was unbelievable to find this marvellous restaurant less than a mile away from where we live, serving the most delicious food ever. On this birthday treat with our mother in law, each course was a delight, and I was rather envious of my husband's choice of starter. It looked exquisite. A schematic lattice of blue cheese and blue berries served on a bed of fennel. Food for the eyes as well as the body. Yet another reason for us to return soon to this restaurant to sample more of the menu before they change with the seasons.

We had booked a table and four of us enjoyed sitting outside at the rear of the property for lunch. The pub has a incoherent system of routing you out to the side of the building to the patio attge rear, rather than straight through the building, where you see a no entry sign on the chair. Made no sense at all, just irritating. We ordered from a good choice of mains, small plates or starters. I really enjoyed a vegetarian aubergine dish, with breadcrums and garlic bread. Othere had burgers and peri peri chicken. Staff were mainly friendly. They hold your credit card as a means of ensuring people pay.

Visited Saturday afternoon for a cold drink and scone. Wanted to sit outside as it was such a nice afternoon. The only free table was literally stacked with dirty plates, glasses, cups, cans. I went inside and although the entire place was empty EVERY table was also stacked with dirty crockery!! Half eaten meals, flies everywhere. One of the tables outside became vacant so I ordered my coke and scone and asked that the table be cleared.. A very reluctant lad came out and cleared the debris, didn’t bother to wipe the spilt salt, ketchup and general mess up. Another customer was loading dirty plates from her table onto another but still nobody bothered to clear up. My scone came out like molten rock,it had clearly been zapped too long in the microwave. When it had cooled down enough to hold I tried to cut the scone,it was rock hard. By this time the staff were out enjoying the chaos that was happening in the grounds of the cathedral and clearly weren’t interested in customers. Definitely won’t be returning, the whole place was dirty.
