I went with 5 friends for our Christmas get-together to Hunters where we had eaten previously and greatly enjoyed it. No-one helped with our coats either on arrival or departure, which was one of the special 'old-fashioned' services that made Hunters so unique. However on this occasion, despite the restaurant being 2/3 empty, the service was very slow, the portions considerably smaller than previously and one of my friends commented that she felt the ingredients used were inferior. After we had finished the main course, we tried to get the attention of a waiter to ask for dessert. This took a while but eventually when a waiter came to our table, we asked for the sweet trolley, (which was a particular feature for Hunters), only to be informed that they no longer had this under the 'new management', This is when we realised why the overall service and quality had dropped - Louis has sold the restaurant (I had presumed when we didn't see him that he had a well deserved night off!). Hunters is certainly not the restaurant it was and we will not be returning there. I understand George has retired and Louis has moved on to another venture - if anyone knows where his new restaurant is, I would appreciate it if you could let us know.

This has to be one of the best restaurants in London! Tonight, 5 September, was about the sixth time I have been here and for the sixth time, I can't fault anything. The service is typical Cypriot hospitality and can never be beaten. Nothing is too much for any of the staff and you are made to feel incredibly welcome. The T-bone steak is the best I have ever tasted. So succulent and cooked to perfection, it just melts in your mouth. The menu caters for all tastes and leave space for the desserts for the Amazing Greek made cakes. Overall, don't bother to travel to the West End, just head up to Cockfosters. Need to book, it gets very busy.

Gave this restaurant a try and had the set lunch menu. I have to say that I was very disappointed, especially with my main course, the chicken in white wine. The dish lacked flavour and I have had better out of jar from the supermarket . The vegetables that came with the meal were boring. It would be nice to have some more interesting options on the set meal. I ordered bottled water with my meal but it wasn't really chilled enough. Coca cola was served in the glass so presume it came from a pump. Good quality restaurant should always serve coke from a coca cola bottle so you know exactly what you are having. This restaurant is really aimed at the older generation and was empty while we were there yet other establishments in the area are busy. I have given two stars as the service was pleasant. However hell would have to freeze over for me to want to spend my hard earned cash at Hunters again.

We had always wanted to visit as they had won awards for many years. The step back in time comment in my title simply means it has the ambiance of how restaurants (particularly Mediterranean ones) used to look and feel in the past. It is not meant to convey anything negative. The menu was varied enough. We skipped the starters and went for mains and a dessert. Both the Spaghetti Oceanic and the Seabass were cooked just right and tasty. The dessert was a difficult choice from the good looking options on the trolly! Our only small criticism was that on the night we were there there appeared to have been a few "regulars" dining there and the talking and joking with the staff was a little bit intrusive into our eating and conversation.

Hunters is a resturant with Great traditions. A wonderful welcome and service awaits. The food selection is varied and of high quality and the portion sizes generous, to the point that we didn't have room for deserts. Sad face, as I'm told they are special. The bill was picked up by Fred but a peek showed me that it was very good value. Parking on the street nearby is available, but during the day till 6 pm limited to 2 hrs so our near 5 hour eat and catch up lunch meant I had to move the car and top the meter twice. Just goes to show how time flies when you are having fun and how welcoming our host was. I will be back for my pudding!! Well worth a visit.

as soon as i walked through the door, the table that was reserved had other people sat at it so we were told to wait 5 minutes for our table, about 10 minutes later we were told to sit somewhere else. about 10 minutes after this we got a menu. The food was terrible, the squid was so tough and tasteless. The lobster, which cost almost £30, was absolutely smothered in cream and had hardly no meat inside, after we had finished our mains. it then took ONE HOUR AND TWENTY MINUTES for a waiter to even speak to us, the dessert trolley eventually made it's way to us and was empty, no choice whatsoever. The waiter would take your empty glass off the table but not even offer you another drink, what is this about?A shockingly overpriced under average restaurant. Would not recommend to anyone i know.

There were generous portions and good service. Only one criticism, when they bring the vegetables and finished serving them they take the remainder away which they should leave on the table as you've paid for them. When I mentioned it he brought us a whole new portion which was nice but not necessary.

Top marks for Hunters for their superb Valentine's Day menu and service. The place, naturally, for such an occasion was heaving, full to bursting! So what did they do? They took on more staff ~ and how sensible was that? It meant everyone was served promptly and efficiently with virtually no waiting time. A simple three choice starter and main course menu was offered with desserts from the trolley. I had Avocado salad which was plentiful, and chicken stuffed and wrapped in pancetta. Superb. It really was. So well done Hunters. Ten out of ten.

Our third visit to this restaurant with a group of friends. The acoustics are very resonant, so when it gets busy it gets noisy - fine if you don't want a quiet romantic evening for two. The waiting staff were attentive and friendly, and the menu selection adequate, although two of our party were veggies, and the choices rather limited for them. In fairness, the Manager would have had chef make some sort of special veggie dish if we were prepared to wait (we didn't). This is particularly surprising, as in the Mediterranean, and in most other Mediterranean restaurants in London, there is a wide selection of vegetarian food - but I digressStarters, mains and desserts all very good, and plates returned empty, the wine flowed, and our group had a good, albeit noisy, time. The place seems to have a local reputation, as every time I have been in it is heaving, so I would assume reservations essential

After a while the noise level was so high that we couldn't hold a conversation - announcements were being made and photographer running all over the place. What should have been a nice evening was ruined for us, and we left without having coffee or after dinner drinks. On complaining the next day to proprietor that we should have been advised when we booked,, he said oh well I can't do anything about it. Would have been nice if he'd maybe offered us a bottle if wine on our next visit or similar. However it was a little clumsy at times, which somehow added some "human" charm to an often too cold service! The food was tasty and the portions were very big. The fish was very well cooked, simple and honest with lots of vegetables. However there was a mention of the chicken being a little tough but in a tasty sauce! The dessert trolly at the end was a really fun touch to the meal and the cakes were delicious. As we were there for a birthday a birthday cake was made and was delicious, light and fluffy. Perfect end to the meal!

Hunters has existed in Cockfosters for as long as I can remember, but I only ever visited once about 30 years ago when I was rather over-awed by the starched linen tablecloths and heavy cutlery. Now being of rather more mature years, these - what some have said are old-fashioned- aspects haven taken on more appeal. I attended last Saturday with my wife and 2 experienced dining friends, and we all thoroughly enjoyed the occasion, as did those attending the 3 birthday parties occurring the same evening. The pale pink pastel wall décor, with it's bas-relief scenes from ancient Greek or Roman(?) times, and the myriad classical statuettes all contributed to the atmosphere. But what kept attracting my eye was the certificate indicating a top-class score of 5 for its food hygiene standards. My friend visited the gents' toilets and confirmed their cleanliness. The service, by a veritable army of waiters and waitresses, was very efficient and friendly, without being at all pushy. And of course the food, from the extensive a-la-carte menu, was delicious, served in good quantities and at the correct temperature. One thing puzzles me: why is the type of cuisine billed as "Afghani" by Trip Advisor? As far as I could see the a-la-carte menu covers just about every type of European food, with perhaps a hint of Cypriot amongst the starters. Finally, there's no wondering what to tip as a 10% discretionary service charge is automatically added. There's a copious basket of bread and toast, real butter and plenty of olives - all without charge. Our bill was very reasonable, so we exited with a full understanding of how this restaurant has earned its excellent reputation.

Excellent range of entrees, pasta, fish, steak, veal, chicken and the list goes on. Also a really good 'value for money' set menu if preferred. The restaurant is nice - plenty of room, starched tablecloths. Slightly dodgy decor. The service is attentive without being overbearing. The food is OK - rather old-fashioned and stodgy. Scallops and bacon was a bit unsubtle - it was literally just that - four scallops completely overpowered by two slices of bacon. Had to pay extra for potatoes and vegetables - a bit unusual these days I think. The coffee wasn't great. There's nothing wrong with a menu with traditional dishes - in fact that can make a nice change - but you need to execute them with a bit more panache and skill than you get at Hunter's.

'Atrocious' was the word used by one of our party to describe the food at this restaurant visited on thursday 31st October. I know it was Halloween, but this shocker was unexpected. Having read the rave reviews of the place on your site I was really looking forward to my visit with three others, all of us regular restaurant-goers. Have the reviewers giving rave reviews not been anywhere else to eat in the past thirty years?Once you arrive it is like stepping back thirty years to the seventies and early eighties. The decor is mock-Roman with chintzy murals on the walls. You see things that seem to have disappeared from modern restaurants: butter rolls, fish knives, melba toast, sweet trolley. Ah the reminiscences....The staff were excellent by the way: my argument is with the food and its poor quality.I chose as a starter 'Tuna Tempter' and was amazed to find myself with dry tinned tuna and some sliced onion on a piece of lettuce. Avoid at all costs! My main was Cod Mornay which was hot but devoid of any taste or flavour. I could have been eating anything really. The spinach, and other vegetables around the table had been overcooked to submission. One of our party had the trout which was certainly dead and had dried out. The salmon had fared little better, but the fillet steak was said to be OK.No puddings were had from the trolley (old favourites like fruit salad, gateau and cakes were on it) since we were loathe to spend any more money with them.If this restaurant has won awards for cooking I would hate to see the ones that were unsuccessful. I categorically ascertain that this is NOT the best restuarant in London: it might not be the best restaurant in that road.

This has to be the best restaurant in London. Wonderful food, wonderful service, exceptional in every way. The home made pâté is to die for, the main course selection is extensive but I would recommend the tournedos Rossini and the desert trolley is amazing so made sure you have room for it! The waiters were attentive but not intrusive. Overall, and exceptional dining experience.

Went to Hunters for the first time for my daughters First Holy Communion, my guests and I had such a great time that we will definately be returning for private functions as well as a meal out.The service was impeccable, the waitors and owner Louis and his dad Geoge were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. All the food was served to 53 people without any delay. Delicious and very generous portions. Attention to detail was excellent. Catering for an age group that varied from 3 years old to 85 years was absolutely no trouble , they definately know what they are doing ! Thank you Hunters for such a memorble day !

We first went to Hunters restaurant about four years ago and we became a regular ever since. The food is excellent. Service is fantastic and the value is unbelievable considering what you get. It has been a great experience every single time we went there. I recommend it to all my friends. These people know what they are doing.

We have been going to Hunters for about 13 years now, and they never fail to please. The manager knows what myself and my wife enjoy and often goes "off menu" to ensure satisfaction. Once tried, always loved. Well done boys and girls, keep it up.

This is possibly the worst restaurant me or my fellow three diners have ever eaten at. I was too embarrassed to complain, hungry after the slow service but also thinking they deserved the benefit of the doubt. The food was bad, my steak was tough as was the fish, I can only think these items have spent too much time in the freezer and that the chef is unaware of the implications or does not understand appropriate cooking times. The service was slow and annoying, sides were eagerly served for you - whether you had ordered them for yourself or not, causing us to order more than necessary and at other times we were on the verge of being ignored.Unless you are a favoured regular this place is best avoided.

What a fantastic experience from start to finish. My partner and I took our very good friends for lunch on a Thursday. From the minute we walked through the door we was made so welcome and warmly greeted by the owner. We were shown to a lovely table by the window. We had the set menu 3 courses for a fantastic price of £17.95 per person. The food was excellent and the portions were huge. The experience was that good that our good friends are strongly considering having there 50th wedding anniversary there (Watch this space)All in all a fantastic lunch will certainly be returning. Oh, 1 thing you need to book in advance expecially for a evening.

I have used this venue twice - we hired it privately for my mother's 60th birthday and more recently had a large table for my grandmother's 90th. The food is excellent, the service even better and they cope with large groups really well. We had a wide range of ages at both events from 5 year old children to the aforementioned 90 year old woman - they coped with everything well. The food comes out cooked beautifully - not an easy task when there's a large group.I would hugely recommend this top venue to anyone planning an event or just a casual evening out.

I remember hunters before the refurb when there were tables tucked away in little alcoves, vine leaves twisted round wooden beams and a real atmosphere.Nowadays it's got a dodgy fake Mediterranean effect painted on the walls. A couple of the waiters ate lovely but one of them may as well have pound signs in his eyeballs. The food is VERY expensive. They recently put the prices up and it's eye watering when the bill comes. We eat out regularly and would go here every 3 months or so. I would be happy to go once a year now, if that.If you go on a Sunday, there is the option of the roast lunch menu which is a little cheaper. As soon as you tell them you're not having the a la carte, they lose interest entirely in you and any non drinkers are basically criminal.

For those familiar with the TV program, visiting Hunters was like waking up in the 70’s, from the decor to the waiter’s gold waistcoats and bow ties and the ‘dessert trolley’. My partner and I were there on a Saturday evening and the first thing we noticed was that it was busy, always a good sign, the second thing was that the clientele were, shall we say ‘mature’.The evening got off to a good start with olive’s and a nice basket of bread and I would say that the service was very good (apart from waiting 25 minutes for the dessert trolley to turn up, we gave up and never had any).Unfortunately the food was not great, old fashioned, bland with no seasoning and lumpy mash. Beware veg and potatoes are extra (another throwback to the 70’s).Wine by the glass is a total rip-off, as my partner was driving I did not want a bottle. House wine starts at around £13 but a 125ml glass is £5!!! I cannot remember visiting any restaurant that serves wine in a 125ml glass; you normally get a choice of 175 or 250ml for around the same price. It worked out I was paying equivalent of £30 for a bottle of house wine. This venue is not for me but saying that they are busy and they obviously have a good following who are happy, but for the price, there are a lot better venues around.

I have had the pleasure of dinning at Hunters of Cockfosters numerous times in the last 12 years. The address is spelt 'Heddon Court Parade' not 'Headon Court Parade'.It is a very nice family run restaurant with an amazing cuisine using all fresh ingredients and a great customer service track record. The restaurant itself is very well laid out in a clean Mediterranean style and decor and there is lots of visual stimulation to be had while enjoying the amazing choices and combinations of food on offer. The owner, management and staff are all very warm and highly accomodating people who regularly go out of their way to make guests feel very welcome to the restaurant. If it is discovered or known that a guest is celebrating something, I have witnessed them make their service even more poignant and extra special for the celebrant, making a show by way of staff singing, giving gifts (cakes/free drinks, etc), and even cutting customer bills by large percentages when they go to pay! I have personally experienced this a number of times.I have to give particular compliments to the Chef as the kitchen was brilliantly clean on the two occasions I had cause to pass through it. The food itself is very well made, very tasty no matter what you eat, and on pricing is great value for money. As a testament to everything I have said above, the restaurant has won numerous verifiable local and national awards for years consecutively and I would have no qualms whatsoever in recommending that anybody eat there, as it is truly the best - Ask for the king prawn in garlic butter starter and you will end up wanting it as a full meal, along with a lot of the other simply divine and morishly tasting food on the menu.

5-30pm, we were both very wet wandering around Covent Garden in heavy rain, all the restaurants were full with queues waiting, so tube back to Cockfosters where we were parked. Found Hunters on the web, a quick call and table booked for 6-45. From the moment we walked in the door we were treated as honoured guests and it just got better. Excellent friendly service with genuine warmth, very good quality food and the perfect touches such as crumbs cleaned from the table between courses. Our first visit but definitely not our last, we ate from the a la carte menu but the table de hote looked tremendous value as well. No hesitation in recommending Hunters of Cockfosters.

This is a large restaurant in Cockfosters on the service road on the left coming from Southgate next to the High Street, I think open 6/7 days a week but please check before making a long journey.. Mediterranean style decor in a creamy sublime way with comfortable chairs with a nice atmosphere International menu. I would say dress smart casual at least. We were celebrating an event with family and friends and booked for English Sunday Lunch. Three courses £16.99 approx. Staff were mostly Cypriot, helpful and humerous! Service was good and so was the food! They did have another lunch menu but was too expensive for us.I would recommend this restaurant as a venue for a special event and food from the fixed price menu. However, people with deeper pockets can choose what they like!
