First visit and we will definitely be back. Chef clearly knows what he is doing and that is so important to foodies like us. We enjoyed a family lunch for 4 and were not disappointed. Mother is a fussy vegan eater and her needs were catered for very well. Staff were attentive and friendly. Highly recommended.

We were staying at The Wisteria Hotel and decided to try the restaurant attached which is Hunters Bar & Kitchen. It was a Sunday evening and I am very glad that we had booked as it was very busy. Being a Sunday, we were presented with the Sunday menu which included some roasts and although this isn't something that I would normally order, I decided to go for the roast beef. It turned out to be great, and as well as containing a generous portion of beef, there were lots of vegetables, a very large yorkshire pudding and plenty of gravy. Looking at the plate I never thought I would finish it but I did! I would be happy to return to try another of their menus.

Having had many a delicious Sunday roast here we decided to try a Saturday evening for a change. We ate off the Spring menu where there's a choice of six starters, priced £7-£10. We both plumped for the Crispy Asian Duck with chestnuts, pickled walnuts, watercress and a chilli & ginger dressing. Three generous sized bonbons packed with lean duck meat and lots of flavour. The choice of 7 main courses may not seem many, but we would always prefer to choose from well thought out, freshly cooked dishes that are done to perfection, than have more choice that may not be executed quite so well. I chose the hand cut sirloin steak, a generous portion of tender, melt in the mouth, meat. I went for the delicious brandy and mushroom sauce with it which came in a separate sauce boat. Mr C chose the Moroccan Lamb Rump with spiced cous cous, cucumber & mint yoghurt which he thoroughly enjoyed as the lamb was beautifully tender and tasty. Service as usual was professional and friendly, everyone is made to feel very welcome and nothing is too much trouble.

We both enjoyed the main dishes & the desserts we had. The service from the staff was efficient & friendly. The old building (built originally as a Hunting Lodge I understand) & furnishing added to the experience.

Located within the Wisteria Hotel, Hunters Bar is in the lovely old part of the building, all beamed ceilings, ever so slightly wonky floors, old hunting prints on the walls, big fireplaces - the works. The menu wasn't extensive, always a good sign in our book because it signifies that everything is being freshly cooked. Choices ranged from classics with a twist to some interesting combinations; my vegetarian casserole was sublime, vegetables cooked to perfection - no mushyness - and the sauce both piquant and creamy. Food was well presented, generously portioned and filling; as we age our appetities do diminish but, that said, we could only manage two courses. Whilst the member of staff who served us was friendly and attentive, his tendency to use over familiar terms with all the guests with whom we saw him interact, was a little off putting. To be honest, once you get to a certain age, to be referred to as 'sweetheart', 'my lovely' and similar from someone young enough to be my son, or even grandson, was creepy. I am sure that the intention was to come over as friendly, but it just backfired in a big way. It wasn't just me, my other half didn't take to being called 'mate' and 'buddy' either!

For the price I was expecting to have the vegetables served in a separate dish and the gravy in a gravy boat but instead everything came on the plate together, red cabbage swimming in gravy ugh. Desert was very nice but so it should be for the price. Very disappointed.

We ate here whilst staying at the Wisteria Hotel. The pub was clean and homely with tables spaced accordingly. There was a lovely real fire going which was welcome in December. The chap serving us was attentive and friendly and the service was spot on. I had the bubble and squeak cake to start then the roast beef Sunday dinner and it was all tasty and plentiful without being too big of a portion. My boyfriend had the ham hock croquettes and then the steak. The steak was requested rare and it came perfectly cooked and just how he wanted it. Thanks chef. Great food.

Sunday roast is one of my favourite meals, and I quite enjoy cooking it. Even better I enjoy eating it, where the food is home cooked and I haven't lifted a finger. I spied that The Wisteria were advertising takeaway Sunday lunches - and it was enough to seal the deal. The idea of a Sunday roast with all the trimmings, ready to eat and without the need for peeling, chopping and washing up, was rather tempting. The mains come with homemade gravy, sauces and a Yorkshire pudding. Desserts can be added to turn the meal into a real feast. The ordering process itself was super simple with payment taken online at point of ordering. For mains we went for the lamb and beef and for dessert we went for the crumble and custard. The food was ready for collection at our chosen booking slot. For those worrying about breaking social distancing rules, it was a completely contact-free pick-up. The food had been put in insulated boxes and paper bags to keep it fresh. Fast forward five minutes, the feast was in my own kitchen and I was feeling smug as it was piping hot. As I unpacked the bags and plated it up the food looked and smelt good. There was a generous amount of food. However just ten minutes later we were tucking in and I was feeling smug again. My lamb was so succulent and full of flavour and the beef was just as delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed the Sunday roast and I'm confident the take away Sunday lunches at The Wisteria will be a big hit with local residents.

Visited for Sunday lunch and was impressed from the start. Covid measures were very good but not overbearing which allowed for a relaxing meal. The service and food were faultless, the bubble cake starter was beautifully presented and had a taste to match.Chicken Sunday dinner and a flat iron steak were our main course choices and both were as good as each other. The chef is clearly an exceptional cook as everything was cooked superbly and presented well too, it was great to have onion rings that weren’t greasy or soggy, they were the best I’ve had. This is a real gem and doesn’t yet have the recognition for food that it deserves so get there while you can.

My wife and I had a lovely dinner in Hunters Kitchen. She had the terrine followed by partridge and I had the mackerel followed by venison. We understand that much of the food is sourced locally. We would certainly like to dine here again if in Oakham.

We were a party of 11 (8 adults and 3 children) and we booked a meal at this restaurant for my 40th birthday. We hadn't been before and are not local to Oakham so we made our decision completely from reviews and the restaurant/hotel website. We arranged to have the meal in one of the restaurant's private dining rooms, due to having little children with us. I had several conversations with staff prior to the meal, to arrange options for children's food etc and felt very assured that I had picked the right place. The room's décor was lovely, as was all of the restaurant, bar and lounge area, and it felt like a good choice of restaurant for a celebration or special event. The service we received was great and attentive throughout the evening. We ordered starters, main courses and puddings, and there were lots of good comments from all members of the party. If we are ever in the area again, we would love to come back for a meal in the main restaurant.

Being a resident i decided to try the restaurant on a saturday evening.I ordered leek and potato soup which i found tasteless/ watery and did not enjoy it despite adding alot of pepper and salt. I reported this to the waiter who offered something else from the starter menu but i declined as i did not like any of the other options. I returned the soup and asked the chef to taste it to see if the taste was as intended. The waiter reported the taste was as intended by the chef. I then had the duck which was again tasteless and dry. I also reported this to the waiter.Deciding not to risk a desert i paid the bill in full as requested noting to the waiter, "i had a different interpretation to the chef on how food should taste". A shame the chef did not come and respond to my comments as i waited at my table 5 minutes after paying the bill which is why i chose to write this review to share with others.I wish the restaurant all the best in the future with producing food people enjoy eating.I gave a 2 rating to reflect the bread and service.

Just had a great experience at Hunters Bar and Kitchen. We had a very warm welcome and enjoyed a delicious meal - chicken parfait followed by roast pork. The parfait was as good as I have had and the roast pork superb. I wish that I had left room for dessert as it had most of my favourites on! Well done on the menu as it was well balanced without being complicated. I will definitely visit again.

Last night we had dinner at the newly renovated Wisteria Hotel. We had the Valentines five course tasting menu which was truly superb! Every course was beautifully presented and tasted even better. I just want to give the owners and their chef some well deserved recognition and can highly recommend. Their Hunters Room is also a tasteful place to enjoy a drink as well. This was our second visit to the Wisteria and we will definitely visit again.

The people who used to run the top quality Barn Restaurant have moved venue to the Hunter's Bar within the revamped Wisteria Hotel. Went as a party of ten including two teenagers. There are two outer rooms for pre dinner drinks, both recently renovated. Drinks were served by a very attentive South African wine waiter. The restaurant part of the Hunter's Bar is a long low area with exposed beams. Low lighting enhances the cosy atmosphere. Starters excellent - I shared the camembert with a fellow diner. One of our party asked if he could have the whole camembert for himself - surprise surprise, the waiter brought an 'extra' complete camembert, much to the amusement of the entire restaurant! Mains, I have a very well presented ribeye steak which was a substantial meal. The fish pie was very popular, very hot and praised by all. Puddings all well received. The entire evening was a success with excellent food, good wine and all at a fair price. A great venue for any occasion.

Attended for a work lunch. Ordered a roast beef sandwich which cost £8.50. The sandwich was dreadful - cheap white sliced bread, small slice of greasy and fatty beef that I suspect came out of a packet purchased from a supermarket and a limp salad garnish with one half of a cherry tomato. It also tasted of cheap margarine rather than butter.

The Wheatsheaf in Oakham is a traditional pub with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Dan and his team always go the extra mile to make you feel at home. They have a great selection of real ales, including guest ales that change regularly, as well as a menu of fresh, home-cooked food. Whether you're stopping by for a pint or a bite to eat, The Wheatsheaf is a great choice.

We travel from York and meet our son and wife who travel from London . It is a good halfway point for them to transfer their dog to us for a couple of weeks to look after while they go on holiday. It is a perfect place off the A1 a lovely village and pub that allow dogs and the food and service and parking are good .
