Hungry Horse - Roaring Donkey in Tendring

On a recent break in Clacton, four of us visited The Roaring Donkey on three occasions in the evening . Found the surroundings, food and staff excellent. Great value for money. When we are next in Clacton we will certainly visit again.

Great atmosphere and very friendly staff, the food was also lovely. Will definitely be coming back and will be recommending to friends

I always love going to this pub / restaurant the staff are really friendly thd food is always cooked just right. There is sports playing on TV on pub side .. Its clean and tidy I notice ,staff clear tables..I would recommended this

Katie and the other staff here are amazing. We come every week without fail and always have food. The staff always talk to my daughter and show an interest in what she's up to. Pubs clean, food is affordable and good deals. Great garden and play area for the kids in the summer. Katie always comes and chats to my little one and asks what she's been up to. Little one orders her own food and drinks. They are so kind and patient with her. Thank you.

So over the years the Donkey has changed but it has never been as good as it is now. The service from the staff is tip top and there's nothing to complain about when it comes to the food, let me be honest it's not going to compete with a top class restaurant but you 100% get your money's worth and there is plenty to choose from. Always worth checking before you come as the have special deals on certain as well as 2 meals for £11.99 Mon - Fri which I think is fantastic. Thanks to Harvey for awesome table service with a smile and a joke, thoroughly enjoyed our birthday meal and will definitely be coming back

We booked table for lunch for my step daughters birthday. Had reserved table. Lovely food. Service was great Harvey made sure we had everything we needed , they was accommodating with the cake . thank to all the staff.

Great place, foods very nice and the people are very friendly, first time here and very surprised for a hungry horse, garden is great with loads of room for us to bring down the dogs.

Just come home from a lovely Sunday lunch! Food was excellent. Pipping hot food served very quickly considering how busy they was. Took our time and had a couple of drinks as well but not once felt like we was being rushed. Will definitely be back again. Thank you for a lovely meal!

food was plentiful, hot and great value the wait was average for this time of year though, the mix it up's are great with a varied choice, will return again, great staff.

Went here today with Friend's. 2 roast dinners, two mixed grills, 2 burgers. The staff were well organised, friendly, and so accommodating. Before we knew it the food was here. It's was honestly delicious, The value for money is insane. Would highly recommend this place. You know what your getting with a hungry horse, good value for money, On this occasion it was way beyond that. Will be visiting again

We visited this pub over a year ago and we were not impressed, cold food and bad service.. A year later we thought we would give it another try and so glad we did we were met with a warm and friendly service and the food was Great. We also noticed that the tables were cleaned promptly as the diners left. Fantastic service keep up the good work 👏 We will definitely return..

Lovely place fair price really enjoy the food and 2 for 12 pound is a bargain. Assitant manager is a gentleman what a lovely man. Thank you for being so kind. i dropped a whole pint and he cleaned it without a fuss and not making feel so clumbsy. Defently felt welcomed and 100 % will be coming again.

It's designed to provide a cheap and cheerful meal. Not a bad place, big outside space. No milk for coffee and they are not allowed to pop to Tesco over the road and buy some...

I was out with a group of 8 yesterday. Service was brilliant , food was hot and tasty. What a lovely evening. Well done. Looking forward to returning.

Good value, chicken was mushy in one of the dishes, unsure if cooked, so left it, steak was rare to medium rare when medium only was stated. Very long wait. 1hr for food

I had the 8oz rump steak and it was so tough even the steak knive couldn't cut it on our wait out I was asked if I had enjoyed meal I explained that my friends steak was rare and she had ask for medium and was tough and also mine was too he did say he would give us new steaks but we had already eaten and was on our way out by then so refused offer but the rest of meal was lovely it was busy and it was awhile before someone came out and said just pick a table they seemed under staffed and it took 20 minutes before food arrived but staff were friendly and a nice atmosphere x

Great value for money Sunday lunch. Not expecting the most amazing lunch at this price but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. No roast parsnips and boiled rather than roasted carrots, but what was there was very well cooked and flavorful. Peas are sometimes hard and dry. These were succulent and tender. I had a cashew roast which was excellent. At £8.75, this was exceptionally good value and the Abbot ale accompanying it was well kept. Would recommend.

Brilliant Staff Service And Food! Well what can I say! We used to use the restaurant quite regularly but it had gone downhill with food/cleanliness and staff. So unfortunately we stopped going but what a wonderful surprise today's visit was. On the off chance I thought I would try the hungry horse after being unable to book anywhere for my family. I'm so pleased I did pop in and enquire as I spoke with Claire and what a lovely lady she is too...so friendly and helpful in that she managed to accommodate my family of 9 to which two was children without any problems. Quick and easy to order which was at the bar. All food arrived in no time and at the same time...unlike some places with large families...Long waits or forgotten item's. Food pipping hot and delicious, drinks went down a treat too. For a large family at late notice the staff were so friendly polite and helpful with food for great value too, we couldn't fault them. 10/10 to all thank you and we will certainly visit again soon.

When there on Sunday for lunch with friends really lovley food staff were so pleasant couldn't do enough for us , new landlady very welcoming will definitely be going back 😊

Spent a great new year with my family. Good music atmosphere, nice chips great bar staff fair priced drinks. I will definitely visit again on my next trip to Frinton.

Christmas dinner was absoulty perfect the staff were outstanding and a warm calm atmosphere I'm giad i found this little jewel in clacton wonderful.

We had boxing day dinner really good value for money nice pleasent atmosphere friendly staff, wasn't expecting such large starters main course was perfect and loved dessert, well done roaring donkey.

Firstly I'd like to say that the staff were great. Nice, friendly and Paige our server was actually quite amusing. This place isn't trying to be The Ivy, so you really can't expect too much from the food. Reminiscent of Wetherspoons food, so if you like that, then you'll be pleasantly surprised. The food is cheap. Really cheap. Suspiciously cheap. But hey, don't let that put you off. It's a pub with cheap booze and cheap food and in these times of the cost of living crisis that's not a bad thing right? If the kitchen team does read this review, then please please please boil the peas for another 5 minutes. All of ours were inedible unfortunately.

my friend has the chicken new yorker and was very disappointed in her meal, later on has realised she has food poisoning from this pub. I, as a vegan, thought i was okay however i have food poisoning also. so there is a high risk of cross contamination. staff were lovely however food has made us very very ill.

My well done steak was cremated, veg should not be put under steak on the sizzle plate, they were burnt, pigs in blanket starters chewy

1. Booked for a festive meal and was told we couldn't have anything from the menu because it wasn't booked (it's was, we checked twice on the phone) 2. Multiple drink orders were wrong or missing and had be changed (about 6 - 7) 3. Was offered free dessert for the table for compensation but later taken away because 'of how the manager was spoken to' 4. The incident in question was that someone had ordered on the app and they didn't have any of the item so it was refunded and we have basically told them that we weren't very happy with the service and were then told that if we complained again we would be asked to leave. Absolute awful service and experience, stay clear

We hadn't been in here for over 3 years as it went down hill. Returned this week, food great value, hot, and plenty of it. Service was so easy go to the till and order. Did not have to wait very long at all atmosphere was very pleasant, friendly staff, was nice and warm in the conservatory as all the radiators were on. Very clean and tidy. Stay local and enjoy

To many changes, unfriendly staff, uncomfortable feeling, won’t be going back.

Stopped for a quick bite on the way through, very efficient, clean and quick, would visit again, I even signed up just to leave a review, well done all.

We fancied a dinner out , and the Roaring Donkey had a unbelievable offer on for a couple. To good a offer to miss. I am a military veteran with a Assistance Dog, now he is trained to straight away lay under a table, and this he does on arrival. I ordered the roast beef meal for two, plus two glasses of wine, the staff member taking my order was very warm and friendly, offering straight away to bring our drinks, in some places this does not happen, and being typical military , I will do everything to prove I can. A small wait, finally the meal arrived, and god what a meal, size was outstanding, and what was on our plate, was massive. The big difference in our meal , was none of those your allowed two roast potatoes, the meat has almost been measured as to size, restaurants. Certainly not on our meals , the beef was large just a tiny bit tough, but nothing as great to put you off, as for veg , what didn’t we get, plus extra gravy was offered. A truly stunning meal, did we have a sweet? How could we ! That meal would have beaten the best big eaters. The wine was very good. Staff were friendly and warm. Now one thing I was pleased about, was a staff manger ,asked is that dog a service dog? Errr sorry but across the pond is the term ,service dog, here assistance dog. He said it in a warm non challenge heavy toned voice, and to put him at ease , showed him his I.D card. I loath hate detest people taking a pet non trained dog into a pub/cum restaurant ,and saying O yes he or she is a assistance dog. He goes straight under the table as fully trained dogs should do. So would I recommend the Roaring Donkey definitely.

Excellent dinner last night at the donkey! Lovely atmosphere and the service was just as good. Even got to meet the new manager who was lovely and couldn’t be more helpful. Will definitely be coming back

The family dinner was fantastic and the customer service was outstanding, quick and helpful. The food was brilliant and there was a wide variety of different meals to choose from highly recommended 10/10.

Had the Wednesday lunchtime £7 Curry and a drink. Chicken tikka masala. Tender chicken, lovely sauce, fresh poppadom, great value and tasty

An excellent stop for drinks and to rest our weary feet having walked from Walton on the Naze on our way to Clacton. Friendly staff who made us feel very welcome.

Visited the Clacton area and ended up eating here for two nights. Food was served quickly, staff all very friendly. They have different special deals on every day which are all very reasonable .We had two curries and two alcoholic drinks for £14 available on Wednesdays. Real value for money.

Came here with my 98 yr old mother as she wanted to treat us for our birthdays. Very busy with long wait for food. Mother couldn't eat her gammon when it arrived so asked waitress if they had some ham she could have (willing to pay) but we're told they didn't have any ? My usual burger and chips arrived with tepid chips and slimy onion rings (I did comment that they look like someone left them on their plate) these last two items had a greasy strange onion taste but as I was starving are them with no complaint. Fries looked totally different to those served with the gammon meals. 45 minutes later at home had to rush to the toilet, up all night with the runs that continued that next day. Will think before using again. FOOT NOTE Contacted the place at the email they gave in response to their message saying they would like to speak to us but as expected havent heard a worrd from them.(Suppose it makes them Look Concerned) Why we went to the council first without contacting manager.

Food was awful beer was nice 😖 . The irish guy tried his best to fix the poor food and in the end offered me a refund which I thank him for . Only thing I would say is its not a good idea to tap someone on the back when trying to cook a very over done steak . When I went to getvmy refund, a lady called Rita just said "whatever " and then said "he's not getting served in here again " the pub was in the wrong and somehow I get treated like that . Still I did reply " good I'm glad who would want to get served this rubbish in this pub " she made no comment back but that kind of rudeness for a fault made by the pub isn't on. Save your money , save your taste buds and don't waste your money in an awful place . We work hard we expect better customer service . Pathetic place , save yourself money and don't eat in such a dump . And no this woman didn't apologise so I have complained to her boss and will take this as far as it needs to go to prevent this happening to someone else

Both barmen Harry and Charlie worked well under immense pressure today in a packed bar, worked really hard and Kept the beers flowing.

Excellent meal. Very good value. Friendly staff. Reasonably priced drinks. We will be back.

The food was reasonably priced, and good. I had their version of the Steak and Ale pie, it was good. My wife had the chicken wings, and she said they were great. The staff were friendly and helpful. You order from the app and they bring it out to you. Drinks have to be ordered at the bar.
