Youngs Other Plaice in Tendring

My first negative experience since moving down here. Went to Youngs Other Plaice for fish and chips and stood in the queue. Got to my turn and woman behind the counter says ‘you’re next’. Another couple walk in behind me and she starts talking to them about Gluten free fish. They then proceed to place their order ahead of me! Ok, I thought, that’s annoying but I’ll be next. Then another lady walks behind me and places her order. Meanwhile I’m standing there like an idiot waiting. After the second lady was served instead of me I said ‘they clearly didn’t want to serve me’ at which point the other lady behind the counter said ‘we do want to serve you’, glared at me and then promptly walked away! All this in front of their customers. I walked out in disgust. Not exactly a shining example of customer service and a rude bosh first impression to make on a new customer. Ended up walking down Connaught Avenue where I ended up getting dinner from Pier One which was lovely. Who knew getting fish and chips by the seaside would be so difficult

Delicious food and friendly service, the midweek special is recommended. perfect after a beach walk...always take friends too when they visit.

Dropped in to pick up fish and chips after a day trip, and before the drive back to London. Freshly cooked haddock and chips ready in 10 mins so was piping hot and very tasty. Well done to the owners, very pleasant and serve amazing food. Top drawer. Many thanks.

Always freshly cooked food and always great quality. Staff friendly and an eat in service is available as well. Great opening times for an impromptu trip for fish and chips by the sea

Tasty fish & chips. Staff can be a bit grumpy sometimes. Long waits at times. Guess because it's good food, you gave to queue like everyone else.

Gorgeous food, had pie chips and squid rings everything was good to perfection. Would highly recommend, people were loving and chatty also

Excellent large fish and chips. This is our go to place for fish and chips when in Frinton. Everything is freshly cooked, well done.

Delicious freshly cooked cod and chips! I was able to check the ingredients used in the batter etc as I am allergic to added sugar and was delighted to find that none is added here. Ordered a small cod and chips-cod was beautifully white and flaky came in three pieces covered in crispy batter which was light and not greasy, absolutely delicious, nice chips generous portion.Family members also ordered fish and beefburgers all very pleased with. Staff very friendly and worked hard in unbearably hot conditions,we all waited outside, well done to them! Very busy, very popular and near to a little garden and several benches, so convenient to sit and eat.Sorry no photos it was too good!

It's conveniently located, but the service is so slow, and the food is merely okay Edit in response to feedback: I have been many times. You are fortunate to have the location you do. If you can't accept constructive criticism, perhaps business is not for you. I have been to other places with considerably higher foot fall who manage better service and higher quality, and achieve this fewer staff

A bit pricy for seaside fish and chips 🍟

As Always when we come over from Barcelona to visit my mum we have our fish and chips fantastic food recommend to all the Spanish who visit frinton

Absolutely amazing service!!! Placed a pick up order and then called to change the time to earlier and was no problem for them. Arrived to collect and everything was ready for us and food was amazing, all family members complimented on how lovely the food was and fish was amazing!!! Thank you and to your amazing friendly staff 😃

We were a group of 35 and at the last minute, the team in Youngs Other Plaice were able to provide 35 delicious meals to take-away to feed our group. There was a variety of orders placed and they gave a pick up time which was met. All meals were provided with no faults. Thank you so much for your hospitality. We will be using this vendor for future day trips to Frinton-on-Sea.

Amazing fish and chips, super efficient and quick and helpful, served a massive group of us 30+ with no wait, and absolutely delicious, highly recommended!

Their fish and batter is very good. Not oily, crisp and the fish is good inside. Chips were good, not excellent as they were a bit floury in the middle. Perhaps the potatoes weren’t the best to begin with? What’s really annoying is they don’t have a toilet. An eat- n restaurant without a toilet!? You have to walk about 5 minutes away for a coffee shop that doesn’t mind non customers using the loo. So in our party, my wife was gone for a good few minutes before she could rejoin us.

My mother lives in frinton and whenever my wife and I and sometime a friend of ours travel up from London we make a point of going here, the best chips for miles and miles by far and yesterday I had cod which was too die for absolutely delicious food and the staff are amazing too, always have a good chat with the nice bearded guy that works there about the rubbish places we have down here in London ! This is our go to fish and chip shop and will remain so, perfect chips perfect food perfect staff what more can you ask for!!

Chips were very good, fish was fresh and a lovely size.

Great cod and Haddock fillets - cooked right and tasted fresh . With a sprinkle of salt Didn’t need any sauce or dip( which they charge for) anyway. Also tried King prawns( breaded), cod roe and salt and pepper squid. Were excellent . Also the battered sausage was a nice treat for the little ones. Great location en route to Frinton beach and therefore worth a stop. Better than some of the Southend chippies.. best thing is they sell the chips separately which I prefer.

Fantastic and some veggie options foo, such as halloumi and veggie burger. Always fast and always fresh and actually the best chips we have found and the lightest batter in Frinton and Walton. If you want absolutely massive portions and a load of dripping batter plus reused oil then go somewhere else.

Best fish and chips I've had in a long time

Delicious and lovely food - we bought fish n chips, which was great quality and taste. The fish n chips were fluffy and tasty. Unfortunately, the sauce pots were quite pricey, and I feel this should have been complimentary 1 dip per portion.

Fish and chips were amazing but extortionate prices Normally fish and chips comes as a pair but it was separate which is fine but the cod £7-8 and chips £3.50 and ontop of that sauces 50p each Also false advertising infront of the shop as is says fish and chips £6.50 but however that was not the case. Also the cod was flat and soggy on the bottom side down.

The place is not big, we were greeted and served well, but 4 stars for the fact that there is no toilet, in my understanding such places should have a toilet, but here there’s even nowhere to wash your hands.

Great fish v good chips, portion size about spot on

Not bad. Chips were ok, about 7 out of 10. Fish was cooked well but the batter was very average flat, thick and a little soggy. Price wise, it's cheaper than some considering the scare stories going about at the moment. Return visit. Top marks, crispy fluffy chips and crunchy batter. Beautiful.

This is clearly the best place in town as the queue was around the corner (but moved fast). Everything was cooked fresh and tasted great!

Just finished a very tasty meal

False advertising, wanted gluten free fish and chips as stated all over Google only to get there and fish and chips to only be made on Fridays! Very disappointing. Replying to your comment below, no I definitely did not get mixed up with pier one as after finding that you only accommodate for coeliacs on Fridays we went to pier one and were served the nicest gluten free fish and chips! Served everyday! Maybe better advertising of gf on Fridays needed to avoid time!

First class fresh cooked fish and chips

Tiny serve of chips. Some of the worst I’ve had in the UK. Tasted like they were cooked in old oil and were soggy straight after leaving the store. Curry sauce tasted ok but was expensive. Service was ok.

We have travelled from Maldon to Frinton on a regular basis over many years, solely to enjoy the outstanding haddock & chips from Young's Other Plaice. Believe me when I say this is the best fish & chips anywhere in Essex. The quality is truly excellent and has been so for as long as I can remember. Next time you are near Frinton, pay them a visit. When you do, you will go back time and time again.

I went here on Monday and bought fish chips x 2 the fish was terrible batter soggy and fish bitty and price was expensive we go here regular but not any more only thing l can say is chips were nice.

Been here a few times and food was great however on our most recent visit the potion size was very disappointing. The cod portion was small and wafer thin Side dishes are very expensive

I’ve been here with my wife and five years old son on Sunday the 8th of October 2023 and I can only say that, fish and chips here are absolutely delicious and the service was amazing. They have kids menu too. Definitely will be returning whenever we go to the Frinton Beach again! Highly recommended! We had haddock and chips! Note: they were people enjoying their fish and chips at the outside table so I only photograph the firmament!

We live in baldock and went for a day out in the seaside. Our favourite place to takeaway fish n chips is this plaice. Highly recomend the fresh fish n chips for a fussy eater they're 10 out of 10

came last night as used before but not for some time. i will be very honest. firstly the young lad who served me was fantastic and had a terrific sense of humour for such a young person and was very engaging with banter which to be fair how expensive it was but all with a smile and a cheeky grin the food was cooked fresh and i don't normally have cod as not a lover of fish being over battered. the fish was perfectly cooked my only comment was that large here seems to come up medium, however it was fantastic and being a typical male had to have curry sauce which was 100%. if the fish was bigger its an easy 5 star. i have read other comments on the chips which i didn't understand. and if you prefer an over battered fish just ask they all seem friendly enough I'm sure wouldn't be to much trouble. would i use again yes every time

Had the cod and chips takeaway they were lovely and good value for money. The staff were friendly aswell.

Great local chippy - always tasty

I have not been to Young’s for a while but really fancied it! I went a 6pm which should be a good time for freshly cooked chips - but was a bit disappointed with the mix of soggy and really hard chips - a very small portion @ £3! They should also do away with the polystyrene trays as they can’t be recycled!

I'm actually shocked although the chips were spot on. 20p extra for batter on the sausage when there is no batter. Its non existent. Then, as a delivery driver on the go asked for my chips and kind of battered sausage to be in a box to be told it's extra for a box. Come on. That's shocking, and the fact you can't put your own salt and vinegar. And there is a spiciness about the sausage and batter. Sorry but its a no from me.

Have been going to this Frinton fish restaurant for years and have always looked forward to a tasty meal, but this time, even though I had ordered two large portions of cod and chips, the cod portions were so thin, only around 7mm thick and overcooked, very disappointing as they did the best fish and chips in the area !

Purchased 2, haddock and chips on 6/09/23. Fish greasy like undercooked or the oil wasn't hot enough. Chips mediocre, some almost raw. But both lacking flavour

Had to wait for the food but I don’t mind, fresh takes time. When it arrived in the box, the fish was excellent and the chips so much better than where I get mine at home. The cost of f and c has gone up so much but I don’t mind paying for it when it’s this good. I’d definitely go back.

Had a lovely tasty F&C after a day at the beach. All cooked fresh 😋. Staff friendly & served quick as they could, as very busy which is good sign. Missing a trick not doing kids' meals. Cans of drink a bit pricey.

Not the best. Chips were heavily fried to the point just tasted fat. Don’t order haddock, an average for taste, but small portion.

I buy fish and chips from this shop regularly. But despite advertising the offer they always refuse to give it. It wasn’t even closing time. I normally visit them around lunch time.

Nice to see a ih and chip shop in Frinton... Thought they were banned lol. (local joke) Nice service and quick. £3 for a medium chips, good for one person. One starbdown as the chips needed another minute to bring up the outer edge as they were a little soft. Good taste though, just no crunch not wet or full of grease though.

Passing shop.Stopped for fish& chips . Waiting for to long. Staff were constantly moaning about 2 people from our party who were sitting at the table outside.( they were only waiting for them to catch the fish and cook it. ) it was rude. We got the food half the chips was crackle and to hard to eat. The fish was dry. The curry sauce was edible. And expensive. Do not mind paying if decent. Took chips back as I was disappointed and disgusted. I unfortunately lost my temper as the staff were so jumped up.Not a nice place. There are much better places to eat fish & chips with really nice staff. If passing through AVOID. AVOID. GAVE ONE STAR AS HAD TO. BUT WOULD GIVE NONE IF I COULD.

I had chicken which was a bit dry, should have had the fish that looked great, would have liked to see the salad on the board for takeaway, everything was freshly cooked.

Got to say, decent fish n chips taste wise, but the large cod they serve is equivalent to a Medium everywhere else. And for what they charge, just doesn't fill you up. Also, if you ask for anything else on the side, i get the impression you're asking for the world from the Lady front of house. Some customer skills & a half smile go a long way imo.

Extremely disappointed. Cod and chips twice. We ate it all and it was ok but the batter was strange. It was not 'crispy'. As i use the wet fish shop and find it excellent i was expecting better. I only came here because i was going to the fish shop. The chips tbf were lovely.

As a fast food is not bad. But for the price £9.50, and wanted ketchup and mayonnaise, I have been told to pay 25p. extra for each K and Mayo=50p. Must include at least one of each per box.

To be fair, we ordered just before closing and the food was not only delicious but piping hot and ready for us when we came to collect within ten minutes on a Friday night. No complaints from the staff given how close we were to closing time either. Definitely worth a visit

We use this chip shop whenever we visit Frinton. Good quality food at reasonable prices.

A great chippy. Food was a little delayed being served but the assistants were friendly and working hard; there were plenty of food orders and we were there around 6pm so in the middle of the teatime rush. Fish freshly cooked. Chip portions not huge though; a large didn't go far for an adult and two children - which does usually at other places. All-in-all, would return.

Portions a little on the small side but pretty good.

Very expensive cod and chips (£9.40 each) considering the very thin shape of the battered fish, which was even thinner at the edges. Service was slow with several take away customers being served before we were as “eating in”. Final bill came to £30 after adding in 2 cans, a pickled onion and one portion of mushy peas.

Perfectly cooked cod and chips, not much room for seating but not a lot the owners can change about that. Well worth a visit when in Frinton.

There are table and chairs outside, but you’re told you have to have table service. We did….. but the food was terrible, very dry and tasteless. Extortionate price for wanting to sit outside. Be mindful if you go with a family NOT to sit outside as it will cost you a fortune. Waitress staff were very pleasant, but food and prices are terrible, A real shame for a family that would like to seat themselves outside as they won’t allow you to buy the takeaway prices and sit and eat, they con you into having table service. Food was rubbish.

3 stars for the chips -none for the fish- tiny piece flat dry and had to scrape from the skin -the cat gets better !

Heated up old chips from day time and sausage in batter with no batter and looked tuff as old boots didn’t even try it fish in batter well batter was soggy on paper why isn’t batter like it used to be now doesn’t even have any on

If you had to drive 100 miles to the dish bar its worth it,just had super pieces of Rock for lunch superb

Chips were like a blob with mash potatoes as chips all broken up! Couldn’t even pick up with fingers and all 4 portions were the same 😩

Great F&C! We have been here before and will be back. Attention to detail includes putting chips in layers and salt and vinigering each layer so seasoned right through!

Great fish and chips. In my opinion the best in Frinton by far. Always cooked to order - they are well cooked and fresh. Staff are friendly and efficient.

Great little chippy behind the infamous Gates of Frinton! Reasonably priced, amazing food and great service. Well worth a visit if you're in or around the area!

What an incredible service from the team today. We had a big family outing (50+) and had called 4 shops in an attempt to organise food. The team here were incredible, the food was all cooked fresh and was piping hot when we came to collect. It was boxed and labelled individually and by family group - nothing was too much trouble and served with a smile. Thank you for making our day amazing
