Hungry Birds in Rutland

Popped in for a quick lunch with my daughter. Simply because it was so pretty. Ordered a toasted sandwich and a pot of tea. Delicious. Was given a plate full of food!

One of the loveliest cafes you will come across. Attractive decor, very clean and cosy without being crowded. The owner and all of her staff are friendly, cheerful and polite. The food, whether you go for breakfast, lunch or tea and cake, is beautifully prepared. Very well done to Hungry Birds as it’s a great place to spend time with friends or family whatever the time of day.

Thought we'd found a gem ,coffee was good, went down hill after that ,my husband had full breakfast, Luke warm and bacon overcooked and left to go cold eggs not cooked I had eggshell in my eggs Benedict, I politely pointed out to waitress, who replied sorry about that, random people coming in and entering a not too clean looking kitchen and staff clearly only interested in taking money,

Called in here today for a coffee as the weather was awful outside,we must of gone in the back way as ended up going down a passage to it,just wasn't sure where we would end up,not much room in it but got a table for two and ordered at the counter two coffees,there were beautiful looking cakes on display so I ordered two Raspberry and Coconut slices,they were delicious, where we sat we could see underneath the cold can and bottle chiller that was on the counter,it was covered in dust and debris,the air filter on the cabinet was full of fluf and dust,we pointed it out to a lady who was serving she laughed at us and said it needs hoovering ! I found it not acceptable it hadn't been cleaned in months.The toilet was grubby and the hand dryer didn't work.

Lovely little cafe full of character. Friendly and efficient staff. Did not have but saw an amazing milk shake with lots of smarties on top! Looked delicious but very fattening!

Firstly would suggest that they turn their music down a notch as it is very difficult to have music that is too loud when you wear hearing aids. The food was average. The bread was not stale, but the sandwich was very dry. The bacon was clearly not freshly cooked, and resembled the sort of bacon you often get at self service breakfasts - overcooked and cold. Not very appetising. Wished we had just had cake instead. Prices were rather expensive too. The staff were pleasant though.

This vibrant small café offers a good range of breakfast options, from fry-ups to more fashionable fayre like eggs Florentine. I had sourdough toast with avocado, scrambled egg and smoked salmon. This was extremely tasty and well-cooked and came with a side salad that was actually worth eating (a rare thing in my experience). My chai latte (yes, I was going the full hipster!) was delicious too. Service was cheerful and friendly. A little on the slow side but I was in no hurry. Prices were reasonable.

The food was nice but so expensive. Nearly £17 for two soups and two tiny scones. Had a wobble and thought about cancelling the order. £7 for a bowl of soup is too much.

We usually come here when in the area as the back of the cafe (covered) allows us to take dogs in. Went to order our food, paid, got a wooden spoon with our table number on and we waited, and waited, and waited. The table behind us had arrived about 20 minutes after us and their food was brought out. The waitress then realised we hadn’t received our order and went to check. Sadly, our order had been misplaced and other than the lovely milkshakes we had, we didn’t get to have our food. As we were catching the bus we didn’t wish to wish ANY longer & we were hungry, despite them offering to quickly make our food. We were offered a full refund (on card) of which 1 week later we are still waiting for. Really disappointed if I’m honest. The excuse was the waitress was leaving and so had other things on her mind.....erm, sorry, not good enough - you’ve lost any future custom from us now. Hoping we get a refund soon - £26 we are still owed.

Amazing choice of delicious gluten-free cakes. I googled gluten-free cafes when visiting Oakham for the first time and spotted a good review for this cafe. So glad I did 😊

Bit disappointing today having been here twice before and couldn’t fault it , so I don’t know if the chefs on holiday but ordered a full English breakfast, the sausage was well over cooked like it had been sitting in a hot plate and bacon also looked like it had too , the rest of the meal looked fine other than the toast which was very dry like no moisture to it at all which given it was seeded bread was odd , wife had scrambled egg and I have to say it was the driest ,bitty looking scrambled egg I’ve ever seen , her toast was also crisp dry , I’d give it a 6/10 shame really because I’ve recommended to friends before in the strength of our previous visits.

We tried out this cafe on a Saturday lunchtime on a visit to Oakham and we were blown away by the quality of the food being served, the atmosphere and the amazing selection of cakes on offer that we returned the following week. This is now our favourite cafe! We had BLTs which were absolutely delicious and served with generous sides of salad, coleslaw and crisps. The kids' selection is healthy; ham or cheese sandwiches with crudités and crisps, and the waitress greeted us with colouring and crayons without us asking, which pleased our five year old. The coffee is good too and cake is delicious. The decor and ambience is really lovely, there are various interesting things around on the walls and ceilings and lots of plants. Generally a pleasant atmosphere with pleasant staff, lovely clean bathroom area too. Can't wait to go back and take my older children to try the amazing milkshakes. So many cakes to choose from! Would definitely recommend.

Really quirky and pretty little place. Warm and welcoming with very good service, reasonable prices and excellent coffee. Although we didn't try the ood the breakfast we saw owing from the kitchen looked superb as was the selection of cakes available.... we would return in a heartbeat.

A small restaurant but they have concentrated their efforts on their chef and the food quality. I had a special of sour dough, avocado, salmon and scrambled egg with a salad. All the ingredients looked and tasted exactly as they should.

Popped in when we visited the lovely town of Oakham. Really pleased we did, the food was fabulous the service was friendly. Staff were taking pride in keeping the tables clean and were very accommodating. Bonus that they serve Teapigs teas. My chicken and avocado salad was lovely and my husband loved his toastie and 'slaw. If we could just get the recipe for the rocky road, which was delicious and in a lovely generous portion I would be a very happy lady. We will definitely eat here again.

Stopped by for lunch recently and pleasant little café but service took an absolute age. I seemed to be standing for an awful long time at the counter before anyone looked up to take my order. Food was quite nice when it came but there really wasn't much choice if you didn't want hot drink, smoothies, cakes or cold sandwich/bread based type lunch. Bit limited.

Was just passing this and friends and I wanted a coffee stop so decided to pop in. Lovely ambience and friendly staff who served efficiently. We decided to add cakes and it was a good decision. They were to die for! Not made on site but brought in but they were delicious especially the Bakewell tart which I had. My friends enjoyed the meringue especially. I have already recommended to friends and family and will certainly call in again when passing.

We arrived for sandwich and cake around 330pm to be told that there was no food. Very strange for a cafe. We left feeling just like the name of this cafe! We will not be back. Other cafes serving at this time in Mill Street.

Stopped here on the way down to a cottage we were stopping at on Friday 5th April. Looked very busy and soon worked out why. A small coffee shops with chairs for 30 people and at times, queues for a seat. We had fruit scone with clotted cream and jam. The scones were waiting to come out of the oven when they were ordered and were probably the best scones ever had. We returned later in the day for a toasted sandwich, using the local butchers ham and was extremely delicious. Glad it’s on on my doorstep as I would be eating out every day!

About 2pm and hungry we stopped in Oakham to look for a light lunch. We passed Hungry Birds thinking it sold bird food! But went in straight away when we saw it was a coffee/snack venue. Small but cosy atmosphere and quite a varied menu for a light lunch. Customers seemed to have a lot of different types of drinks and sandwiches. Service was reasonable but the young girl (most of the staff seemed to be very young except for a lady working in the back who we could see behind the till), took a long time processing my order on the laptop and I had to repeat it three times. The Welsh Rarebit was one of the best I have had, not too big and the Hot Chocolate was delicious but sprinkled with a lot of chocolate which I had specially asked them not to do. All in all a pleasant and tasty lunch but listening skills could have been better!

This is the third time I have visited Hungry Birds for lunch and it's always a pleasure. Small but perfectly formed with friendly and helpful staff the perfect place to spend a restful hour. The food is top quality well presented and reasonably priced. Today I had the best BLTM sandwich with a lovely cappuccino.

Had a very nice BLT & Cappuccino with the better half in Oakham at Hungry Birds! Suggest that you try this coffee shop - you will not regret it!

I went to Hungry Birds on Saturday afternoon about an hour before their advertised closing time. There was very little left in the way of cakes but I appreciate this is a sign of good sales during the day.

The venue has such a lovely feel when you walk in. There is a good selection of food with quality ingredients. Food came quickly and tasted great. Too often you get the promise of a full Englishbreakfast , only to get bog standard ingredients (which never even came within 100 miles of a pig). This place on the other hand serves great tasting food which leaves you wanting to come back again (which I will).

First off, we were told there was a 30 min wait for food when we ordered. When it eventually came it was ok, not great but certainly not bad. The biggest problem is the service. Stood at the till whilst 3 girls faff about & not taking orders for 5 mins is just rubbish. Then taking 20 mins to do a drink, which I had to chase up is just crap. Food took well over 30 mins to come but was fine when it came. Food not good enough to counter the crap service. Wouldn’t be returning

My mum & I were in Oakham for the day and found this little gem for lunch. The staff were really friendly and our baby took a real shine to them. We had sandwiches for lunch and took away some cakes, both were delicious. Will be stopping by again when I’m next in Oakham. Well worth a visit whether you want a cuppa & cake or lunch

Tucked away and only found by chance as we do not know the area. Both waitresses were very nice and the food was delicious. We both had the melts which were nicely presented. Definately one to recommend.

Went in for a drink and found a lovely little cafe. Wanted a snack and asked for 2 slices of plain toast instead of their lovely cakes etc. Yes, no problem they said and promptly delivered the best toast I have had anywhere. Service good prices average for the area.

I called in for lunch while waiting for a postponed meeting. I stood behind a lady in the queue for service (you order at the counter) and this was 1.45 pm. After a couple of minutes someone popped out of the kitchen and told me they weren't taking orders for any more food after the lady in front of me had given her order. I can't understand why they couldn't have served me too, I was last in the queue. I didn't want cake for lunch - that was all they'd serve me. So although it looked like a cosy welcoming cafe I did not find it so. I could have done wiith a bit of tlc at that moment!

Nice place - love the decor, very rustic and fun. We had sandwiches and soup - the soup was a bit ordinary, but sarnies very very good, yum; lots of filling and so tasty. Well impressed, delicious lunch, definitely recommend.
