This was my second visit to Hunan Terrace, and once again, they exceeded my expectations. The experience was amazing, with every detail improving upon the last. Our waiter, Andrii, was incredibly kind and professional, making us feel truly welcome. The owner and manager also made a point to ensure we had a wonderful time. The menu is impressive, offering a wide variety of options for pescatarians, vegetarians, and those who enjoy fish and meat. The food and service at Hunan Terrace continue to surprise and delight me. I'll definitely be coming back!

It was my first time at Hunan Terrace, and we were warmly welcomed by the manager and owner. Our server, Andrii, took care of us throughout the evening. He was attentive, polite, and did an excellent job explaining the unique dishes and suggesting great drink pairings. I loved the concept of choosing from a meat, fish, vegetarian, or vegan menu, which allowed us to try a variety of high-quality dishes. The experience felt like a food tasting. Highly recommend and I will definitely be coming back!

I went to this restaurant for the first time, with friends who had been there before, I had no expectations. I was very surprised by Andrii’s service and his professionalism.. all the staff were friendly and welcoming, the food was delicious they had a wide choice even for those who don't eat meat.. which is really rare. Thank you very much for the experience. Highly recommend! I will definitely come back!

This review is for Hunan Terrace 23/08 Excellent meal topped off by perfect service from a gentleman with a European accent and short gingery beard. He was v attentive and his passion for the food really came across as he talked us through some of the dishes. I had an issue with my card also and he handled it very well. Kudos to him.

Overall, the quality does not feel substantially better than the average Asian restaurant. However, the asking price suggests a high-end restaurant. Very bad value for money. It felt like a rip off.

Over priced, mediocre food, zero ambience. What a waste of a precious evening in London! The only 2-3 dishes that we actually ate were batter fried. We could’ve dealt with the lack of atmosphere if the food had delivered. There was not one dish I would go back for and get cheated with the inflated pricing and sub par food. The only silver lining was the service that was friendly and solicitous.

The restaurant sells itself as high-end, one of the best restaurants in London. The no-menu concept even suggests that there might have a surprise element/ uniqueness in the food. However it turned out that most dishes are very common Chinese dishes which you could get in many Chinese restaurants in bigger portions and for a fraction of the price i.e. prawn on toast and pan-fried veg dumplings are typical dim sum, sea bass blanched in hot oil, fried rice and fried noodles as mains are so common and underwhelming. In fact the latter two are what many Asians can whip up at home. There was nothing special about the Peking duck and in fact, the duck was dry. The food was also overly-seasoned with all of us having to down a lot of water after the meal. Note also the photos of the same dishes appear again and again from reviews between 10 months + ago and the most recent ones, means they’re just churning out the same food year in year out with little or zero innovation. And I believe this restaurant rakes it in because serving most guests the same food in tiny portion lessens food wastage and saves a lot of costs (mass produced), probably thinking they can rip off guests with little experience in Chinese food. Although to be fair, they need to pay the rent for quite a premium location. Overall it was a hefty price tag for your standard Chinese food, it’s definitely NOT value for money and you’re better off going to other restaurants in for e.g. Chinatown where you get same, if not better quality food in bigger portions for a fraction of the price. I’m not going back nor will I recommend it to anyone.

Literally don’t even know where to begin. The most special meal I’ve probably ever had in my life - the boyfriend (it was his birthday meal) is in agreement. Starting with service - we were really warmly received, everyone was so friendly and completely knowledgeable about every course, even from the sourcing to the preparation of the ingredients. The servers spoke to you as if an old friend and the experience was lovely and very personal. Whether this is true of course I don’t know, but you really get the feeling that they enjoy their jobs and are excited/passionate about food and all the processes, which makes it even more enjoyable. Food - completely original and an utterly memorable meal. Shout out to the lightly battered garlic & chilli green beans and the beef shin & jellyfish!! Absolutely loved the surprise of not knowing what was coming with each course and we left well fed, full but not bursting, which is hard to achieve with 18 courses! They also made a big effort for my boyfriends birthday with a special dessert with a candle and all the servers gathered round and sang. All in all one of the best dining experiences in every element that we’ve both ever had. We cannot wait to one day return!!!

Unfortunately the food being a huge let down means that I have to rate this place low. The service was outstanding and the idea and the attempt was really good. Further, the presentation was also great. Sadly, we paid £260 for two people and didn’t appreciate the food at all. Out of the 18 courses, there was a maximum of 3 dishes we enjoyed but everything pretty much tasted the same. Similar flavours for most dishes and some of the meat wasn’t cooked to a good standard. E.g. the steak dish was cooked medium to well done so it was quite chewy (I normally go for medium rare). One of the lamb dishes was overly done and extremely chewy, I could only just about swallow it. I’d have rather paid £100 more and gone somewhere I at least enjoy the meal but unfortunately, this was a huge let down.

Flawlessly executed, both food and service. The portion sizes of the many courses was perfect. We left feeling quite full, but not overly so, as the food is flavourful and light with just the right amount of spiciness. It is a steady, well paced dining event so be prepared to allow enough time for the restaurant team to deliver.

Have been there 3 times earlier great service - every time before going clearly mention I am Vegan. This time also specifically called them prior informed them I am vegan , mentioned in my reservation. After reaching the restaurant informed the server and the manager twice before every course rechecking with them that it’s vegan. Post that also they confirmed that the fried rice which is the main course comes with chicken - this is prior to me tasting asking them is it vegan and they confirming. Simple response post that we are sorry - really disappointed and not going there again. Really insensitive around peoples dietary requirements and simple instructions- lost a very loyal client.

Atmosphere not great - quite dated that felt like an average Chinese restaurant, not something upmarket. Quality of toilets and staff smoking outside tells you this isn’t a great place. Meal very expensive for what you got. The food was average, with tiny portions. All tasted a bit under-whelming. The drinks - wow, wine prices extortionate. Never been to an average restaurant and not been able to get a bottle of wine for under £50. We asked for a house red and they pointed to two £50+ bottles! Fizzy water - came in a decanted bottle and like others have said, tasted like tap water fizzed up. Beer, over £6 for a half - crazy prices. And to top it off they decided to add a 15% service charge (£35!). Safe to say we got that taken off the bill. We saw on Secret London that the evening meal price was £67 (spotted later this was 2018). How can the price increase so much in just six years (now £98). Disappointed!

Restaurant keeps the 15% service charge so suggest tip in cash. Food is good quality and lots of meat/fish dishes so you eat what you pay for. Having said that the dishes are nothing different or surprising. You will find the same in other cheaper Chinese restaurants although quality is good. Service is very friendly and efficient. You will be charged 15% service charge but the waiters never see thaat money, the restaurant owners keep it!!!

Came here for a special occasion meal. Looking at the positives, the restaurant is located in a nice area of London, the place was very clean and the environment was quite nice. The staff were extremely attentive and I feel like the service was excellent. However, the food was really quite average. Probably slightly better than average, but I find it really difficult to try and justify the prices that they charge. I Came here because of a friend recommendation, and after reading the reviews on here, however the food was really no different to any other Chinese restaurants I have been in Chinatown. There is a lot of variety of dishes, and we had a 12 course tasting menu, however, the portions are tiny, and none of the dishes particularly were stand out. £170 for lunch for 2 with 2 drinks is really a lot of money for what you get. Plus there is an optional service charge of 15%, which is automatically added to the bill. I was expecting more food from Hunan region, but ask someone who has lived in China, this really did not live up to my expectations. What did impress me was that the staff did really try to give great service and it did feel the service was better than most other Chinese restaurants. As an everyday restaurant, Hunan is a nice alternative to what is on offer generally in London, but I do not feel like it is the sort of place for a special occasion where the focus is on high-quality food.

An interesting concept - quasi tasting menu. However the menu description is not accurate. At lunch you can only have 12 courses so there is actually no option of eating make. The portions are tiny. Further despite being told no spice the kitchen just doles out the same spicy food that they are carting out to other tables. I presume the food is just pre-cooked at this point. As to the main course because the two of us asked for fish they just gave us one tiny portion of fish for two. The tables next to us each chose a different main course so one person got the same size fish as we did for two. The food is somewhat tasty but the service was offhand and you feel you are being reprimanded because you did not pick the lobster for an extra 65 at lunch.

This is a difficult one to review as a friend booked it and we didn’t know what to expect apart from the fact it was Asian food. When we arrived at 6.15 the restaurant was quite empty and first impressions was that it was quite small and unpretentious. Despite being a day early relative to our booking, we were shown to a table by friendly staff particularly Mr A de La Z (You know who you are!) and had some good banter. I was supposed to be paying so when I was told there was no menu and that is was 100 a head I nearly choked on the peanuts!!!!! However three hours later I can say that I enjoyed the experience and the 18 or so courses, but and a big but is that despite the free glass of fizz the overall price is too high. I am only giving this a very good because in the end I didn’t pay because my friend felt guilty at the cost!!! Resultamondo I say. 40 quid would have been more reasonable per head If I was paying. It was very busy so I suppose the owner must be getting it right. Who cares about the cost when you are based in Belgravia eh?

Mixed feelings with this place, there were som great dishes that were definitely a standout: eg. the soups were amazing, the lightly battered fried beans were great, the beef, prawns and cod were great too. However, i didn’t enjoy some dishes like the mussels and the pig ear. While the speciality of this place is to try alot of food for a reasonable price, i did wish they focused on serving 10 great dishes instead of focusing so much on quantity. It almost reminded me of a Chinese wedding banquet. Would recommend this place if you want to try many chinese dishes all at once, they may not all be 10/10, but it’s a good variety.

My family and I used to enjoy the culinary experience at Hunan. But our recent visit was very disappointing. The food quality was not as good (beef was a bit chewy) and the food was lacking creativity. The only dish that we enjoyed the most was the soap, the rest were quite average. Some dishes were just like a small portion of Chinese takeaways on the fancy plates. The dessert was the big disappointment as it was just two small banana split and ice cream, which you normally get from any unauthentic Chinese restaurants in the UK. The fizzy water we ordered were not even fizzy after two minutes, it tasked like tap water. It seems to us the restaurant is cutting corner to maintain margin due to rising costs? We won't go back again unless there are some improvements. Overall we were very underwhelmed and disappointed.

Did the dinner tasting here and had high expectations. My friend and I are both Chinese / Taiwanese and found the dishes to be extremely lacking (except for a select few fish dishes). We felt as though we were just paying a high price for small portions of mediocre food. The food was reasonably good - not sensational considering it was no choice - and the service was very friendly. By the end tho, yet another small portion of something tasty but not vastly different from some of its predecessors becomes wearisome instead of special. Maybe 18 courses is just too much and half the number, carefully planned would be more enjoyable. Also there isn't much atmosphere or charm in the venue, and the cost is astronomic! I'm afraid we just didn't think it worth the cost. Somehow it falls between the stools of being reasonably cheap, unglamorous but authentic, like many places in Chinatown, or upmarket and somewhere for a special occasion. This was neither. It clearly has a devoted clientele (including those eating a la carte, which looked a better option,) but we will not be joining them.

An interesting dining experience. 18 small plates of very well cooked mostly classic Chinese dishes that you would find in authentic Chinese restaurants. There is no menu so each dish was a pleasant surprise. The quality of the ingredients is apparent. Except for a couple of dishes like the fried beans and the mussels in black bean sauce you pretty much only get one or two mouthfuls of each dish. The concept is great if there are only a few of you and like variety. They were very good about substituting dishes to accommodate dietary requirements. A couple of dishes like the chicken and the main course of fried rice and steamed sea bass were only above average. The black cod in a reduced vinegar sauce was a highlight. Service was good.

A great variety of dishes on offer (including scallops, monkfish, steak, duck, lamb…) and the flavours were consistently good. I liked that there was a bit of spice in most dishes. I also liked the flexibility of the menu, whereby a couple of extra items we asked for were provided free of charge. Service was friendly and the meal was well paced. London Food 💯 When people say that London has mediocre food, they’re most often referring to British food, known for their fried, mashed and more bland foods But London itself is a metropolitan city with cuisine reflective of its worldwide influence and influx on many cultures While Indian cuisine is most well-known (and represented from food to tea culture), I also found Thai and Chinese cuisine excellent Hunan is a unique restaurant in which the menu is up to the chef and features upwards of 20 dishes While their name refers to a region of China, the cooking is more reflective of a broader region including Cantonese, Sichuan, and Hunan flavors Each bite was distinguished by high quality ingredients, bold spices and flavors (though nothing is spicy), and stellar wok hei (or heat) 📷 Leave-it-to-us menu £94.80 per person 📍Hunan (London, UK)

An amazing diner experience ! We came here with our one year old. The staff was incredibly nice and helpful. The food is incredible, everything from the soup to the Peking duck was superb. The service is even better. Will definetly come back. My husband has been coming to Hunan since 2006 and it’s incredible to see the quality as good as ever.

Huge number of sympathetically served dishes, each perfectly prepared. Were there too many types of meat and fish and seafood thrown together? Might it have been even more pleasing had the chef used his great skill to 'theme" the dinner, thereby eliminating the perhaps overwhelming profusion of varieties? A great evening, all told. Thank you

This is an experience, not a place to repeatedly visit, but if you have a large appetite and great company this would be the concert version of food. 18 courses - they're not kidding. It's a test of how long you can last. The kitchen ensure there is always food on the table, so unlike a French meal with sizeable breaks between course, this is a 4 hour food extravaganza. I suspect we only survived because we were vegetarian and a lot of the dishes were salad-like and light. The use of the cornflour-based sauce seemed like a repeating pattern but there were some real gems in the meal like a water chestnut preparation, a warm salad wrap, a handmade noodles with soya sprouts and a green aubergine with a mild ginger and chilli seasoning. Had it not been a cold night, we would have walked a few miles after this well-spent evening.

Excellent, a great experience from start to finish. Service is very good, and the pace of the dishes coming out is perfect. Each dish was delicious, with excellent ingredients. The variety was notable which made it even more enjoyable. Would definitely recommend, the atmosphere is also relaxed, didn’t feel hurried, the size of the restaurant lends to this also. Definitely give it a try!

UPDATE: The Hunan team reached out and kindly rectified the champagne mishap - the speed at which the team responded and rectified was amazing. Thank you! ORIGINAL: Some mixed feelings about our anniversary dinner this week. Overall, we had a really lovely time and I would recommend as a really unique, enjoyable experience. PROS: - Food was incredible, not crazy expensive, and you will definitely be FULL - Staff and service were fantastic! Servers were knowledgeable and friendly - Overall vibe of the restaurant was perfect, a great place for a special occasion CONS: - We were offered two glasses of champagne as an anniversary celebration drink… that we then had to pay for… - The duck main was okay, unfortunately not to the same standard as the other courses - Service charge is 15% due to the number of courses and knowledge required from staff (as per Hunan’s response below), which makes sense but diners should be made aware of!

Great little plates of delight. Cooked to perfection and tasted delicious. We were lucky to get a table near a window which had great light.

We have visited multiple times, both pre and post Covid. The food is truly delightful, showcasing fresh and subtle Chinese flavours. We took my parents 2 years ago and on learning my parents are from Taiwan, Chef incorporated some Taiwanese dishes into our courses. The sauteed clams brought back huge memories for my dad as they tasted exactly like the clams my grandmother used to cook! Easily one of our favourite restaurants in London!

Really cool quirky little place! Loved the set up in what felt like a converted living room, and it had the vibe of being full of regulars. The service was lovely and friendly and the food was a brilliant blind introduction to the chef’s style.

Each of the 18 courses we had was a delight (although some like the soup, black cod and dessert were clear winners) and the care and attention that went into each dish was clear. Highly recommend!

We had visited Hunan before, but this was the first time we have been since COVID. We were immediately reminded why we loved it so much! There is no menu but they are incredibly accommodating of requirements and preferences, and the variation makes every meal feel like a personalised experience. The service is friendly and personal, and the restaurant has a very relaxed atmosphere. The quality of the food itself is fantastic, with plenty of variety (no spoilers here…), and it is very reasonable value for money when compared to similar 15-20 course tasting menus. Not our first visit, and certainly not our last!

Inspired cooking with excellent service. Chef's choice tasting menu. Everything was fantastic with special mention for the venison in black pepper sauce and brown crab noodle dish.

Interesting experience but food ok not great for the price - 1/4 crispy duck served as main course for 3 people … nothing else - no rice -noodles etc - had to ask for more - when I did server told us 1/4 duck would be “too much for some guests” … hardly … then was offered some noodles as a concession for my almost £60 per person lunch .

Possibly the worst Chinese meal I have ever had. Ambience was great, service good but the food was reminiscent of Chinese restaurants I went to when I was a impoverished student many years ago. We had the Chinese New Year menu - don’t! Terribly disappointing.

I made a reservation in advance and arrived at noon on a weekday, so it wasn't busy. Pork belly and chicken soup, the soup is thick and white, with a strong peppery taste. The three-piece roasted duck, roasted chicken, and barbecued pork are probably pretty good in London, but in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, the quality is average. Didn't taste the way I expected. The shrimp fried rice is very delicious. The shrimps are elastic and the rice has distinct grains. The rice is fragrant and the egg is fragrant in your mouth. The stir-fried bean sprouts are tender and fresh. It is said that many of the waiters here are international students with master's degrees and bloggers, and their service is very cautious.

Average taste and overpriced. I waited for more than half an hour for the food to be served. The service staff did not pay attention to the customer's needs at all. No one refilled the water. I also waited a long time for the bill. I will not go back.

Edit: I feel sick after eating here. Sweet and sour special was almost completely batter with little filling. Was asked to pay cash, which I didn't have, so they asked me to pay by bank transfer. I was going to leave, when they decided that could pay by card after all...

This is an unexpected find. Simple no fuss Hong Kong style cafe affairs. The atmosphere is a bit dull but if you could bear with this aspect, the food served here wouldn’t disappoint. Will certainly consider coming again when in the neighborhood. We came for the Singapore Style Vermicelli and again we were pleasantly impressed. The standards are as good as those you could find in Hong Kong eateries if not better. You don’t come to Reindeer for its ambience. Do come with an empty stomach and you will go away very satisfied.

We have eaten here a number of times and the service has always been good. Today however, we asked for a table on the ground floor which was confirmed. We waited 5-10 minutes for it be cleared and prepared when a senior male waiter came over and shouted for us to go upstairs. I told him we had a table already and he shouted ‘don’t you understand? Get upstairs’. I said we just wanted the table we’d been waiting for. He told me numerous times he was IN CHARGE and quickly became aggressive and intimidating. This went on and on. We then left the restaurant and had a lovely meal elsewhere where we weren’t screamed at. The rudest restaurant encounter I’ve ever had. We will not be visiting ever again.
