Barshu is very organised. The seating area is well spaced. Service is quick and prompt. Don't expect European Chinese food. Their food is authentic and people going to Barshu should aim to enjoy that authenticity. We ordered the beef with peppers,Dan Dan noodles, soft shell crab and pork and prawn spring rolls. I don't know enough to tell if this is genuine Chinese food but I tell you this: It was really, really excellent. They even make scrambled egg that is full of flavour! We will 100% return at some point. The menu is a bit confusing and looking at the other tables it might be easy to order too much food, so ask if in doubt. Not the cheapest, but great staff, great wine, and did I mention the food? Excellent.

I'm so glad we discovered this restaurant! On the outskirts of Chinatown it feels authentic, intimate and welcoming. All the staff were efficient and friendly and the lead waiter was extremely helpful in explaining how the ordering process worked how much food we should go for. There was so much choice and so many interesting and unusual dishes that we really were spoilt for choice. Everything we ordered was delicious, a highlight was the chicken the szechuan peppercorns and chilli, totally unique flavour sensations for us! We were also very pleasantly surprised with the prices too, especially considering we were in heart of tourist land. We can't wait to go back.

Expansive menu choice. Ranging from what a westerner and non-travelled person might regard as very exotic to some of the more usual Chinese restaurant suspect but chop suey and prawn crackers this ain't and it is so much better for it. Similarly range of very spicy, through spicy, to not spicy and dare I say it....... suitable for the blandest palate. But all full of excellent flavour. On the upside, the menu looked amazing, service was good and quick, and either of us died. However - although the food was clearly cooked well enough, it tasted - to me - awful. Not just poor; or unusual; but really, really bad. I accept that this could be a matter of personal taste - the restaurant was rammed with Chinese people who seemed to be enjoying their food - but I've eaten out a lot, worldwide, and for many years - and that was one of the worst tasting selection I've ever had. And not cheap .......

The food was really not nice - greasy, oily and so very salty. I’d go as far as say one of the worst meals I’ve ever had a restaurant. I ordered a vegetarian dish - my noodles had pork. There was zero apology from the waiting staff. A pint of beer is £9.90!! The prices are absurd for most things. We felt rushed by the rude waiting staff, sat next to a drafty window about 1 inch from the next table. We said we aren’t paying service charge - this was met with more rudeness - blows my mind this is expected esp when you order yourself on a bit of paper!! Awful. I feel unwell today due to the salt. I have a horrible taste still in my mouth from the oil. So unsure why they have good reviews.

We had a great experience at Barshu. We walked in without a booking and the host found us a table within 5min. We were sat outside which was fine as the street is not too narrow but I’d recommend booking at least a day in advance. The food and service were amazing. Our waitress took the time to explain to us some of the dishes we were interested in and gave us her recommendations. I will definitely come back. UPDATE: I am now on my fifth visit and the dishes remain consistently excellent. It is now one of my favourite restaurants in London. The dry wok twice cooked pork and fish fragrant aubergines are our two must haves when we come.

I was one of the first customers to visit Barshu back in 2006. Back then it was fresh, energetic and it stood out from the blend and anglised Chinese food scene in London. I have visited a few more times since but the freshness wore off and a lot more competitors came along offering similar if not better things. Last week I took friends over with the aim of introducing them to "haut cuisine" of Sichuan. Disappointed is an understatement. The starters such as "salivating chicken" and "husband and wife beef inner salad" are ok but nothing extraordinary. The dry wok dishes are over salty, piled up with dry chilli but very little meat - could be covert cost cutting measure. For the type of price they are charging , It's highly unlikely I will go there again in the foreseeable future.

Very poor service attitude, treated differently. When treating foreigners, I wish I could introduce each dish. Chinese people are not willing to double check after ordering, and then check the numbers on the menu. I come to have a meal and practice my memory. I have to remember to order by myself. The number of each dish? The so-called Michelin-starred Chinese food turns out to be precooked dishes? I ordered sweet and sour pork ribs. It was shown as a cold dish on the menu, but it turned out to be hot? After asking the store clerk, he admitted that we just took it out of the refrigerator and stung it, but this time we overdid it. Can only say 6 Great lightning protection!

Interesting flavours, complex warmth - not just ‘hot’. (We didn’t have the hottest options). We had hot and sour soup, chongquing noodles, aubergine and green beens, salt and pepper king prawns and salt and pepper lotus root. All delicious. If I had to pick a favourite probably aubergine and green beans - perfectly cooked. Aubergine soft without being sludgy and green beans just cooked with a bit of crunch left. Lovely savoury, hot, ginger and garlicky sauce. 2 large glasses of pleasant but undemanding wine and change from £80 before tip. Will definitely go back.
