What a wonderful surprise! After a disappointing experience in July, I was hesitant to return, but I’m so glad I did. I completely agree with the other review about the importance of English-speaking staff—it was refreshing to see a diverse team, and the new manager, who speaks fluent English, provided exceptional service that far exceeded my last visit. I also appreciated the thoughtful changes the new GM has introduced, which have truly enhanced the experience. She even created cocktails that aren’t on the menu, and I have to say, the lychee martini was the best I’ve ever had! I enjoyed it so much that I drank it too quickly and forgot to take a picture. I’ll definitely be returning, if only for the cocktails, especially since they’ll be launching a new range soon. If they’re anything like the delicious lychee martini with its unique twist, I can’t wait to try them! A huge thank you to the GM and her amazing team for an outstanding dining experience—I’ll be back soon with family and friends!

Tonight’s dinner was an absolute feast! The salted pork and bamboo shoot soup was rich and comforting, while the mapo tofu with Canadian lobster was a bold, luxurious twist on a classic. The eel with scallion and fish maw was perfectly tender and flavorful. Every bite was pure delight!

Amazing Cantonese and Shanghainese cuisine! The flavors are authentic and well-balanced. I highly recommend the lobster—the meat is fresh and tender, with perfectly seasoned flavors that make it a must-try dish. The menu offers a great mix of light and savory options, catering to different tastes. Another great perk—you can order from the Heytea next door and get a discount! Perfect for pairing a refreshing drink with your meal. Definitely a spot worth visiting!

As a Chinese, it’s the most authentic Chinese restaurant I’ve been in London, the location is perfectly near shopping center in Bond street, lobster Mapo Tofu is the most-have one, they cut the whole lobster 🦞 and mixed with seasoned tofu, highly recommended, chicken soup and dessert are also extraordinary, I mean any of the cuisine is very delicious and you won’t regret, the atmosphere and vibe are luxurious too and very famous in Chinese communities

For the price it is an average performer in the Chinese restaurant scene in London. Some of the dishes are good but many are average or in the case of dishes like ma pu tofu below average.

One of the best authentic Chinese restaurants in London. A new member of the service team has also been appointed specifically for English-speaking customers since some of the staff find it difficult to communicate in English. I think this is the reason for some of the past negative reviews. I am not Chinese myself, but enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine rather than “fine-dining” and westernised since often that just reduces the flavour and imagination of the dish. The quality of the ingredients is top range and the recipes and execution is outstanding. Truly a hidden gem for top range Chinese food and very underrated.

The Cantonese cuisine is not worth the prize - expensive and so-so. Didn't try the Shanghainese cuisine though. A few of the dishes were served cold and the quality of food is under the bar. Black peppered Wagyu beef was recommended by the staff and it was def not worth £68. Despite the small portion, probably less than 10 pieces, the beef itself is not marbled and too fatty that I don't see it as wagyu. Won't come back.

Editing my review for a repeat visit in Jan 2025. Despite a renovation inside, the food has really gone downhill. The quality is poor, prices very high and standard terrible. Most of the waiters are not Chinese and cannot explain any of the dishes either. It’s a real shame as for years this has been a reliable institution for authentic- ish Chinese food.

Bright Courtyard was great before, but it was extremely bad when we dined in on 28th Jan, 2025. As this day was Chinese New Year, the restaurant was fully and over-booked, in fact, the restaurant and the kitchen have no capacity to handle the situation so things end up with a totally chaos. We made the reservation in advance via OpenTable, and a staff from the restaurant contacted us immediately thereafter and asked us to pre book all the food in advance with a deposit payment. He explained no more dishes can be added due the Chinese New Year and kitchen may be busy, which we understand at that time point. When on the day of 28th Jan, we arrived at the restaurant on time at 7 pm, and we were sitted at about 7:20 pm (which is still OK for now), and the first dish just came to us at 8:50 pm (1 and half hours for a single plate?). There’s only a single dish for another long wait for about an hour, until we have other dishes (so in total about 2.5 hours wait for most of the food, still two dishes not come). And there’s limited response when we try to find a restaurant staff for help, a young man even just ignore our hand-wave for many times so we have to come to the front desk to ask what happened and where are our dishes. We then confused: what is the point of ordering everything in advance suppose it’s so slow? At around 10 pm, there’re still two dishes not come, and we just cancel those and pay the bill and left. Another thing to be mentioned, we found there’re many tables who can order their food at restaurant, we felt cheated by the stall who called us earlier by saying “you cannot make order or add food at restaurant”. Myself and my friend have been to this restaurant in the past about 7 years for over maybe 30 times for all our “big event” celebration and holidays, but this time we were all very very disappointed. When you don’t have capability, you should NOT over-booked for yourself.

First and last visit—definitely not worth the price. The presentation was unimpressive, the portions were small, and most importantly, the food wasn’t served hot. The chicken soup arrived already portioned, but it had spilled everywhere. I would have much preferred to serve it myself. The dessert, Rice Wine Soup with Rice Bites it tasted like plain water. The staff were kind and helpful in packing my takeaway, but unfortunately, the lid wasn’t secured properly. By the time I got home, everything had leaked. I had high expectations for this Lunar New Year’s Eve dinner, but it turned out to be a major disappointment.

Staff were not well trained. Always delivered a wrong order to our table or put our order under another table. Sometimes our dishes were not even out into order until we chased them. Average price per person is around £60 and it's not worth it.

Food, for the most part, with the exception of the mushroom soup was disappointing. Even chilli chicken and eel was quite tasteless... this at > 60 per person for rather small dishes and near-cold rice on the side. I was surprised by the reputation.

If you want to eat Shanghainese food, don’t come here. None of the dishes are authentic. The braised pomfret uses freshly thawed frozen pomfret. No sugar is added to the braised dish and it is thickened. There are three pieces of fried rice cakes in the flower crab fried rice cake. The crab meat is still uncooked and transparent, and the soup is not fried. How dare you say that you are fried rice cake? The price of 19 pounds of garlic water spinach is pitiful and the portion is so small that I’m crazy to try to steal my money. Onion and ginger mutton chef uses beef instead of mutton and still doesn’t admit it haha Don’t be fooled by the pictures on the menu, it’s not what you get. Do not come if you want to have authentic Chinese Shanghai dishes. The chef can not cook, he even couldn’t distinguish between beef or lamb. Definitely overpriced

I have been coming to Bright Courtyard for a few years now, regularly. I enjoy the food, the variety of the menu and the nice restaurant atmosphere, which is quite relaxed and enjoyable for a social occasion. I want to leave constructive feedback as I hope to be coming back again. Please consider these couple of things as genuine feedback from a regular customer: 1. Ensure the bathrooms are clean; the hygiene of a restaurant is paramount and can be assessed based on how clean the kitchen and the bathrooms are. The bathrooms have a horrible smell of pee, this is something I have regularly noticed on my last visits, and frankly it brings down all the enthusiasm of visiting your establishment. If this is what the bathrooms look like, I'd start to question what the kitchen hygiene looks like too. 2. The service quality has somewhat deteriorated, I have seen many inexperienced waiters recently; all seem to be hard working 💪 but you could invest in their training a bit more. All in all the food remains of good quality and I have enjoyed it multiple times, but I will be taking a break from visiting until I see the above points have been addressed.

EXTREMELY RUDE!!! I hadn't been to this restaurant for a while and thought maybe the menu had changed, so I called yesterday at 15:24 to ask if the half price lunch menu was the same as usual. The receptionist confirmed that everything was normal, she also nicely specified the price (£36 before service charge) and there was no price increase. No need to reserve a seat, just walk in as before. The restaurant is always empty at noon, so I never worry about not having a seat. I went in today and was told that the menu was cancelled 1 month ago. We were surprised and told the manager the whole story. The manager was very passive aggressive. He said this was just my version of the story and refused to check my call log. He also accused me of not telling him the name of the receptionist whom I spoke to over the phone. Lol Which customer would ask the name of the receptionist when calling a restaurant??? I said it was a mandarin speaking female and he said there were too many waiters and he would not investigate. It was super ridiculous because there were really very few waiters to serve very few customers in their restaurant. He would know by simply asking. Finally, I asked him if he was accusing me of making up the story, and he said YES! He didn't listen, explain, or apologize at all. He was passive aggressive the whole time. Which customer would make up a lie for something like this? I chose to meet friends here because there are fewer people, it is quieter, which means it is easier to talk. Now I understand why there are fewer people in this restaurant while the Royal China (1 minute away) is always crowded. Customers were scared away by the disrespect.

Had relatively high hopes walking in, service was good and also prices for the dim sum dishes were fine. Ordered like 4 or 5 dim sum options for around 7£ each, I was thinking I may come here more often. Then the waiter was like do you want any vegetables and I was like yeah, some bok choi would be great please. So the food came and the rice Congee was good, the Bok Choi was good, the waiters were good, but the dumplings were quite average, below average and same as the beef Cheung, which was kind of supposed to be the highlight. I’ve dined at 1000+ Chinese restaurants and had dim sum all my life. This was below average apart from the rice and vegetables. At this point I was like this an ok restaurant, not sure if I’ll come again but it’s like alright… so the bill came and it was more than I expected, the other dishes were all 7£ but the bok choi was 20£. I asked if there was a manager around and he was like I am the manager. And I was like? Why did you give me the most expensive vegetable, I told him I saw bok choi for 7£ on another menu and he was like, that’s for the raw bok choi, we gave you the cooked one. And I was like well I was looking for just a cheap side of vegetables, some notice would’ve been nice, you mind taking off 10£? And he was just like na. And I was a bit like ok I’ll pay but it’s not great business. He was like I don’t mind at all, gave me very I don’t care vibes, just want that extra 10£. I was like you know I was interested in coming here possibly more often, I’m on Baker St a lot, I live around the area, this is just bad business and I’m looking for a good place for the occasional dim sum. And he was just like ‘I don’t care’. Was a bit strange, I said I wouldn’t write a great review and would’ve loved to come more often if he’d just been a bit more honest with the vegetable pricing, but the manager was very like, I don’t need you to be happy to make this business successful, so best of luck to him, I will be looking for other good Chinese restaurants.

Unfortunately, the service was below average. Our food arrived before we even received water, and I had to ask three times before my tea was served. Additionally, one waiter had a noticeable odor, which made it unpleasant every time they passed by.

Over rated authentic Chinese restaurant. Food was average, the ha gao and fan guo dimsum skin was too sticky, it fell apart when trying to pick it up. The service was poor, will not return!

Food was disappointing, especially the siu mai. Cheung fun “skin” was sticky and dough sticks over fried. Salted egg bun not so fluffy. Har gow was nice but that’s it really. It was a comfortable setting and service was pleasant but I wouldn’t rush back for the food!

Food was ok but service was terrible. Slow service, wrong items delivered, replacements forgotten. High chair was also broken and dirty. Seemingly just our table that had bad service; another table that was a non-Asian family seemed to experience much speedier and attentive service - they were served before us even though we arrived prior. It was our first time refusing to pay service charge, a decision we did not take lightly.

This Shanghainese restaurant really surprised me! The taste of the dishes is very authentic, and every dish is full of rich Shanghai flavor. Especially the signature braised pork, it melts in your mouth and the sauce is rich, completely restoring the traditional Shanghai taste. The service is also very considerate, and the restaurant's environment is elegant and comfortable, making people feel very relaxed. Whether it's a family dinner or a get-together with friends, this is an ideal choice.

I was pleasantly surprised when a friend invited me to this Shanghainese restaurant for dinner. Ordered a few authentic Shanghainese dishes to relieve my homesickness. Nice ambience for a date.

Really nice restaurant! We were having a crave for dumplings, so we decided to come to this restaurant It is really good! They have a nice big choice of dishes and the atmosphere remembered us to Maxim’s one of our favourite restaurants in Hong Kong The quality and flavour of the food is nice, but I should say that the best was Ting, our waitress:, her kindness, suggestions and explanations upgraded our experience Highly recommended

Great for a lunch, with typical asian restaurant feel - very hustly bustly. The pork crackle and duck are great. Update for 2025 - we are long term customers and whilst the food overall is ok, the duck is a let down. It’s seems they use frozen and reheated so the meat is very dry and lack taste so I highly do not recommend getting the roast duck.

Very good authentic Japanese food, both traditional kaiseki type, hot pot, and great sushi (fresh fish and masterful craft, Anayama san is an artist!!). The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, very helpful and extremely polite. A great experience overall. I had so many dishes, it's difficult to recommend anything in particular, as everything was good.
