Being completely honest, this has to be the best restaurant I have been to. The Fat Duck was previously the top in terms of food and experience, but Humble Chicken takes the top stop. The food is on another level, probably because I love Japanese food. Took my wife for our 10 year anniversary and she absolutely loved it as well.

A truly wonderful experience had yesterday at Humble Chicken. The food was incredibly complex and creative with great pairings with the wines and sake. I particularly enjoyed the tartare and the chicken! The whole experience was a real triumph and revelation. Thank you again to the whole team - your hard work has paid off and I cannot wait to come again soon!

My wife and I had such an incredible experience at Humble Chicken in mid-July. Some of the best food we’ve ever had and probably our favorite meal on a recent trip to London. The team was amazing. The chefs present food in such a proud and elegant manner, while the beverage team keeps your drinks flowing. We had some of the most interesting sake, which came with detailed but not overly so explanations of their origins. The food was amazing. The bread service was outstanding, the lobster was insane, the beef was incredible. Really a joy to eat here

From the moment we walked in we experienced five star service. I have yet to see such attention to detail in a restaurant in this city. The care put into each dish and pairing was enthusiastic and informative. I’m truly impressed. Delightful dish after delicious dish after immaculate dish …. I’m running out of adjectives on the level this restaurant deserves! Now, for the staff- you all love what you do and it shows. Hearing and feeling your passion made the experience all the more unforgettable! The owner is also quite kind and I loved watching him watch customer’s reactions… so wholesome to see the pride in a chefs eyes like that.

Amazing! Wonderful service, pleasant space and creative flavors. Particularly memorable bites include the Humble Fried Chicken, the mussel starter and the tune course. That being said, I enjoyed every course. My only regret for the meal was being too full to finish the final savory course. Excellent wine and sake list, with helpful tasting notes. The staff is top notch, and really added to the experience.

The food is exquisite, but I’m not here to review the food. I’ve been three times with various family members and friends, including Matthew, who left the review below mine, and I can share their thoughts: Pauline (big sister): “It was a taste sensation and a meal to remember. In a wonderful setting. With great company” (Mark’s note: aww!)
Martin and Imran (life long friends and Michelin Star restaurant connoisseurs): “The best meal we’ve ever had.”
Matthew (another life long friend, and my companion that evening see review below): “An experience on a par with the birth of my Son.” Matthew had the wine and sake pairing which, if it affected his judgment, can only have done so in a manner that speaks very highly of the wine and sake pairing. Now, it’s my turn, I want to review the service, because I experienced a level of service that most people will never receive anywhere.

Because I’m left handed. To explain: Initially you’re seated with a pair of chopsticks in front you, positioned to your right, as you’d expect. The first thing I did was to move them to my left side. From that point onwards, everything that was served to me, was positioned for my left hand. All the drinks, and food items. I didn’t say anything to anyone about it, but someone noted the position of my chopsticks, and all the servers adjusted accordingly. I’ve never had that happen to me before, anywhere. The kicker was the main course (short rib - heavenly, my only comment on the food). For this we were provided with an additional knife and fork, placed on a napkin for each of myself and Matthew (my dining companion that evening). Matthew had his fork to the left of his knife, as you’d expect, and mine, had the fork on the right. I was honestly blown away by that. I’m not sure how many people would notice or care, but I found that level of attention to detail quite extraordinary, and I absolutely appreciated it. Over the coming years, I intend to bring pretty much everyone I love here. Next year my brother and his wife celebrate their 50th birthdays, and 20th wedding anniversary. They live just outside Edinburgh, and I’ll be bringing them here to celebrate. Some of my dearest friends in the world are coming to visit next year. I’ll be bringing them here too. I could go on, but I think you get the gist. (btw, I’m not looking for any special treatment by telling you this. I’ll be coming regardless, and, besides, what more could you give?)

If I was to try to describe the dining experience I would say that it took me 20 years to be a parent and it’s the most incredible thing. (My son is now 6). Tonight at Humble Chicken can only be compared to the day of my son’s birth…… a whole new experience which blows the mind (and palette). Truly as memorable as the day Richard was born. Each course was phenomenal and the wine pairings were incredible also. Cannot say thank you to Mark for taking me, oh to the staff for being so incredibly talented and welcoming. They truly have a passion for what they do and their smiles carry to their eyes as they engage with you. My only complaint is that I don’t possess a millionth of the talent and will be returning to my own Home cooking tomorrow. I would say I have been ruined beyond belief. But that’s hard to say when I feel I’ve had one of the best experiences of my life. Gosh, I don’t know if the place is simply overrated or we caught the kitchen on a bad day. But for £500 price tag for 2 there are better restaurants to go to in London. Firstly, there is nothing humble about this place. Yes, the signature Humble Fried Chicken is a delight, but foie gras and caviar are not humble and they make appearances twice in the menu. So, for me the brief is missed. I’m also not sure every guest being told to “smash” the opening Otoro dish speaks of particularly humility but rather decadence, which is fine were it not for the name and theme of this place. The standout dishes are the tomato celebration and the fish Dashi, they both transported you else where. However, the little piggies bao buns barely tasted of anything and the presentation was basic, it seemed like a gimmick. And the Shokupan picnic just seemed like a dish to fill your stomach although the pickles are really special. The Sukiyaki dish was nice but too rich and too late in the game, so by the time dessert came round, watching someone struggle to grate a tasteless but giant strawberry did nothing for me. The Purin dessert has an interesting flavour profile, but at the end of so much butter, I was unable to finish it, and it is here there is a brief reminder of humility as it comes wrapped in old menus… They’ll parcel you off with a chamomile tea to take home, which after such a poorly executed and overly rich menu, you’ll need to help you digest. Lastly, the music, is awful. Michael Bolton and Craig David are not what I expect in a venue of this standing.

I like the chef Angelo's enthusiasm, but the food was below expectations, especially considering the very high price. Also, there was an annoying detail, when we arrived at the restaurant, the waiter wouldn't let us sit where we wanted at the counter. When we later asked for a reason, he explained that the spot was for three people, not two. However, this didn't make sense because the restaurant was full, and only two people were sitting there.

A wonderfully executed Japanese tasting menu. Some absolutely delicious dishes and a well weighted menu that leaves you full at the end but not gasping for air. As with many tasting menus it's really hard to nail the mains after such scrumptious snacks and starters. Highlights being the scallop and foie gras that were almost perfection. The mains were good - the place still deserves 5 stars because execution was perfect and the overall experience was fun. Finishing off with a great deconstructed cheesecake and then some Japanese custard (which I wasn't a fan of but I can appreciate who'd like this). Given the price it's 4/5 for food but the overall experience is worth it. I'd say that the entire start of the menu is perfection and the mains just lacked the oompf that left you going WOW. If you're into your wines then ask for the Humble Book and look at their collection. They have some smashing things that will combine very well with the different dishes. We picked a Tameran that was perfect but if you want to go all out then get the Lumiere.

Lets start off with the beginning of the experience. So it seems if you book just before the opening time, then you are likely to have to stand around and wait for them to open. So, that's that, next the welcoming was wonderful, and the staff seemed very inviting. As for the seating, everyone is sat on the half rectangular table; bare in mind that not everyone walks in at the same time so you'll be smelling dishes you either had or hadn't had already. I do feel the need to comment on the music, as it did not reflect on the food or atmosphere not one bit- the playlist was far from classical or Japanese style music. There were a few great dishes including the mussels, KFC and Melon under snacks to name my personal favourites. The bread (1 loaf per 2) that was brought after snacks was absolutely divine ! Their fried chicken was their main show stopper, but I did wish that they'd incorporate that level of flavour and texture into many more of their dishes. One of the cuts of Sashimi did have an inedible line of muscle to it which wasn't the greatest, but then again, the other plates surrounding were decent and clean tasting. But let me also tell you this, don't let the platting /images fool you as the portion sizes are actually tiny! Service was great (Although- I must notify you that service charge was optional and is at 15%). Overall, if you want to experience a different vibe to your usual Michelin starred restaurants, then this if your place to go.

We went to the restaurant on 10/02/24 for a significant birthday treat. I’m not a food critic or expert, but the food was terrific and the restaurant had recently won a very well deserved Michelin star. We were warmly welcomed in, then given a very informed run-through of the drinks menu by the maître d' . We opted for some Sake then white wine, both of which complimented the dishes very well. We had opted for the tasting menu. This had been meticulously thought out and evidently influenced by the food of Japan (‘Land of Soy sauce! And Mothra!’ [we’d seen a matinee of ‘The Book of Mormon’ prior to the meal]). The dishes were not only outstanding but also visually entertaining (eg the mini piggy burgers called ‘This Little Piggy’). The service was excellent, with chefs and the maître d' serving the food and at the same time giving the background to the dishes and their respective ingredients in a friendly and engaging manner, injecting welcome humour into the proceedings in addition. The experience was enjoyably theatrical with plenty of opportunity to see the chefs preparing the various dishes with aplomb. Overseeing all was the commanding presence of the owner, Angelo Sato, evidently - and rightly - proud of his restaurant and team; of his Michelin Star; and of the buzzing atmosphere he had cultivated. He served us some of the dishes himself, with charm. They kindly provided us with a menu to keep, signed with birthday greetings from the team and also gave us some take-away exotic Japanese tea bag infusions. Wonderful experience. Would go there again - at the drop of a kasa 笠!

Food is truly sensational. Some of the best in London right now. Nice atmosphere, small but decent wine & cocktail list. One tip though: a better soundtrack!! Michael Bolton might be post ironic, but no.

I had such an amazing experience at Humble Chicken and it is a place I’ll highly recommend if you enjoy an izakaya and or omakasa experience! The restaurant gives customers a cosy and comfortable dining experience by the bar and sits 18 people approximately. The seating layout allows you to enjoy conversations your friends, family, and/or other half… (depending who you are going with) as well as interact with the catering team throughout your meal. The team there are engaging, professional, interactive, and really know their stuff. While we did the sake pairing we got to talk to a member of the team, share thoughts and experience and that really enhanced the dining experience. The place is very nicely decorated, simplistic, fits to their theme and funky as well. You get a traditional meets upbeat modern vibe. The food was amazing, delicious, thoroughly enjoyed the dining journey with each dish that was served. The element of surprise, presentation and quality, really happy with how well everything was planned and coordinated. The level of detail and how it was presented you can see the head chef put a lot of thought into it. I don’t eat beef, I have to praise the team for being able to give me an alternative meat option. Much appreciated. I highly recommend for you to book in advance as you’ll have to be extremely lucky to get seated from a walk in. If you have allergies or a vegetarian or vegan, I have to say this restaurant is unsuitable for you. Though that is highlighted on their menu. Finally, thank you again for a wonderful experience, will be back again when the new menu kicks in!

It was ok. The atmosphere wasn't great. The chef was opposite us the whole time which was a bit uncomfortable. My wife didn't like some of the courses and it got a bit awkward. The sushi course was the best in my opinion, my wife liked the cheesecake the most. The guy that greets you and takes payment seemed very odd.

Headline: I wouldn’t be surprised if they get into the Michelin Guide or maybe earn a star, but not quite 4.7/5 The restaurant's ambiance is pretty warm and casual. Each dish was a display of culinary finesse, with the Mussel, Kosho Ponzu, Avocado, and Beef Tartar each standing out with a 4.5/5 rating. The Chicken Nanban (you can feel the oily taste from the crispy outside) and This Little Piggy maintained the high bar with a 4/5. Not to be outdone, the Australian Winter Truffle with Chicken Liver Parfait and the Wild Black Seabream each earned a 4.3 for their intricate flavors. The Short Rib was exceptional, deserving its 4.7/5. While I didn't rate the Sofu Sencha, it complemented our meal perfectly. The Cheesecake was a hit at 4.7/5, and although the Purin was a tad lower at 3/5, it was not an ideal finish to our meal. The personalized signed menu from the staff was a delightful birthday surprise that added to the day's magic. The prices may be on the higher side, but the experience justifies the cost. Overall, Humble Chicken earns a 4.2/5, making it a worthy destination for those special dining moments.

Went for a birthday lunch-time omakase. The staff were attentive and very nice. The interior design is cool and fun. The playlist kills the vibe a little bit and the music is played a bit too loud but overall a fun/cool place for quality food in the heart of Soho. The plates were very good overall. ADORED the ponzu avocado mussels, beef tartar with miso and bone marrow, shokupan with chicken liver, truffle and parsley butter , seabream dashi, the very fun and rich flavoured take on sukiyaki, the amazing ocha sofu senca tea and the freshest cheesecake Ive probably ever had- the tangerine cheesecake. Only the purin was not really for me and the other fried starters were a bit too oily to my liking. A bit expensive but LOVED the thoughtful gift in the end. Thanks guys!

13-Jul-23 & 21-Dec-23 Humble Chicken: I've visited twice now and been equally blown away on both occasions. Definitely now in my Top 5 in London. Every single dish is a mini masterpiece of taste and presentation. The team are an absolute pleasure to watch in their work: it's like watching a well rehearsed play where enthusiasm and standards never slip. Their service is that perfect mix of professional and superbly well-humoured. The music (not something I usually notice) is spot-on for my taste and just the right volume. On both visits I've left feeling on top of the world, satisfied and very well looked after. I'll return when the dining budget allows!

We had such an amazing time celebrating our Anniversary. The food was fantastic, each dish was presented beautifully with the ceremony of the server telling you not only what was contained in the dish but also directions on how best to enjoy it (one bite, three bites, break it up and let it soak etc.). Which was fantastic for putting you at ease when enjoying the delicious food. Apart from the actual food which was the star of the show, the staff and atmosphere were phenomenal. You can tell that a lot of time and attention has gone into everything and everyone is passionate about the food, theatre and experience of the diners. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and really did put you at ease, which allowed you to really enjoy and soak up the whole experience. Being able to watch the dishes be prepared and then watch other peoples reaction to items you'd tasted earlier in the service was a real treat. Everyone seemed so calm and related but the Chef - Angelo - described it as "controlled chaos". It didn't seen chaotic in the slightest. I will definitely be recommending this restaurant to as many people as possible and will be back again once the menu changes (although eating the same menu again would be just as pleasurable). We had such a lovely time, thank you!

By far the BEST food and service I’ve ever had. Everything tasted so delicious and everyone at Humble Chicken took time and care to prepare the most beautiful dishes for us. You will NOT be disappointed in anything that the chef serves you and they time it just right to bring out the courses that you don’t feel full or hungry throughout the whole time you’re there. The staff there was AMAZING! They really love their customers and really take the time to get to know you and make sure everything is to your liking. I never doubted for a second how wonderful the owners are and how much they took care of me. Please give them a try! They are wonderful and kind and their food is such high quality as well as their atmosphere and it’ll make you coming back for more!

Long story short: this place was unreal. Food: 10/10. Service: 10/10. Atmosphere: 10/10. My best friend and I went here on her birthday, and were both blown away by the quality of food. Both of us being from Japan, we have pretty high standards when it comes to oversea Japanese restaurants--this exceeded expectations! It has the home-iness of Japanese cooking (all the right balance, all the warm heart and rich taste) elevated and wrapped up in the finest of dining experiences. The presentation alone would have scored huge points, but the fact that everything we were served was a miniature work of art? Amazing. My favorite was smoky beef tartar "snack attack" and the clementine cheesecake, my best friend loved the sukiyaki--we both loved the sashimi! Every dish was presented with such care and explanation, specific recommendation on how to eat and in what order--so it made us feel at ease and very catered to. But, the kicker: everyone at the restaurant was getting the same attentive service. How they manage it while they're bustling around making every little tiny detail perfect is beyond me, but we loved every second of it! Angelo Sato clearly knows food and I'm embarrassed I've ever said the words "I can cook," because THIS is true cooking. His head of service John Paul didn't let a single detail fall by the wayside, and was so amiable and welcoming to each diner. All the rest of the cooks and staff were equally focused and warm, and it was such a perfect experience. Obviously, cannot gush enough. Highly, highly recommend! I've never felt fancier but, at the same time, more at home. Thank you, Humble Chicken!

World class, inventive and fun. Every dish superb and the house’s skill with chicken still much in evidence; the chicken nanban was a bite of joy. The drinks pairings deserve a special mention spanning Japan north to south, France and Peckham. Each managed to be both interesting and added to the dish, even the Cab Franc which is not my normal choice. Service was knowledgeable, attentive and friendly in a way that is so difficult to get right. Highly recommended

This place is phenomenal! Came in last minute and got to try their tasting menu. Each piece of food was lovingly crafted and thanks to the kitchen being just behind the bar you can see them work throughout the experience crafting it all. I would also highly recommend taking one of their drink pairings. I personally went for the non-alcoholic and got a beautifully paired drink for each part of the meal which perfectly synced with the food. I was very thankful to enjoy your food and hope to come treat myself again (once my bank balance has recovered 😂 it was worth every penny)

We had the most incredible time at humble chicken 2.0 on Saturday night. There were 13 stunning courses, each absolutely perfect. The flavours were incredible in every single dish. The amount of care taken in preparing the dishes was incredible. We literally couldn’t choose a favourite dish because of how incredible they all were... We loved that this was an experience where you sit at the bar and watch the chefs prepare everything. It was so entertaining. We were there for about 3 hours I think, which was lovely. This is a must do for foodies! Everyone was SO friendly too. We had an amazing time. We normally try a tasting menu and then we don’t go back, but we will 1000% be revisiting when the menu changes. Because of the dishes AND the staff. Thank you Angelo & John who were the chefs and prepped every dish. This is well worth the money. The drinks menu is also fantastic - so many Japanese options. Aidan was incredible at explaining the drinks and let us taste the drink before we went for it. However I was very fussy and he opened a half bottle of champagne especially for me, so I could have champagne by the glass (normally it’s sold by the bottle.) We didn’t catch the name of everyone but thank you to every single one of them! We throughly enjoyed this and we WILL be back. The best Japanese tasting menu experience in london.

One of the best meals I've ever had! I went with a friend in August and we were honestly shocked by the detail and attention put into each dish. The food was beyond incredible, each with its own unique twist. The service was incredible, again the attention to every detail was impeccable. From pulling out our chairs and taking our coats, to the service of the food which came with a detailed explanation of each dish and where the food was sourced from. We were also seated at the bar right in front of the chefs so it was incredible to be able to see them put the dishes together right in front of your eyes. It's easily one of the best meals and service we had both ever experienced. I can't recommend it enough, put it at the top of your must eat restaurants to eat at in London.

This place is a Michelin star in the making, Ikoyi, Umu, A.Wong, Hakkasan,(Brat viz. the wonderful smoked flavours and respectful treatment of shellfish),(and Barrafina in terms of creating an atmosphere where you can see the chefs work their magic in front of you in a relaxed atmosphere) these are Humble Chicken’s contemporaries. If you want to come to a restaurant that is in an upward trajectory, doing truly interesting food with a great wine and sake pairing- come here! The staff are conscientious, warm and friendly. The food is beyond reproach. The wine and sake menu is like bread and butter- perfectly matched. On a similar note - a personal highlight was the bread course as good a parfait as you could get at LeGavroche or the Alain Ducasee at the Dorchester, and a milk loaf simultaneously soft and crispy to spread the ambrosia across. If you want to come to a restaurant that is a bargain at the cost of the taster, that has a passionate and interesting head chef, a front of house who the cares about ambiance and interest of a bar dining setting, and a somm who knows what’s what and is personable come to Humble Chicken.
