Tasty food, amazing-looking cakes (with vegan options!) We had a cajun chicken ciabatta, charred cabbage salad, black pudding and poached eggs on toast and a croque monsieur. All delish! They have a small selection of alcoholic drinks too. Friendly staff and some intesting artwork on the walls! Well worth a visit!

breakfast - check, lunch - check, drinks - check, healthy - check, good service - check, and the best bit - you get to say I had a wonderful 'Hug'. The home made quiche here is totally "legend" as are the different breakfast egg options - we recommend the eggs Benedict. 5 veggie stars. Live music nights are fun and a relaxing night out.. Top notch place for '"brunch". Soup and quiche highly recommended Update 16/1/24 same as before - see above - superb soup and quiche on a bitterly cold day 😁

This is hard to write because i've had mixed experiences here. The trouble with places like this is that the front facing staff have a huge effect on how your visit goes. I loved hug until around a year ago here's why; So, I have an assistance dog in training for severe anxiety issues and panic attacks. I had been to hug a few times by this point and the staff were lovely, the lady who served me at this early stage was wonderful, kind and caring. Also allowed my dog to be on the sofa for her first trip and I greatly appreciated this. Unfortunately on my 3rd or 4th trip here, I came in with someone who I hadn't met before and I had chosen hug as my comfortable place. I hadn't been to any other cafe for many years for anxiety reasons. When we came in, my dog gave me an alert, by jumping onto my lap, that I was anxious and would be having an attack. We are both clearly marked, her with a jacket and myself with a hidden disability tag. At this point, a male staff member, reached over and said very abruptly; no dogs on the furniture thanks, and walked away. I need to point out here, that this wouldn't have been appropriate to speak to anyone in the tone that was taken and he could have been a little more patient. The personal issue I had with this, is that I started to panic more at this point, I felt small and wanted to run away. I was disappointed after this experience at best, my dog was just doing her job, I felt much worse and I decided to not eat after this, I just got a drink. The person I met with had a small meal but we felt awkward throughout and left quickly afterwards. The food was good and the staff were nice. It only took one staff member to ruin that. We now go to the cafe next door instead. So all in all, yes hug is pleasant, but it's definitely a bit hit and miss with the staff, the atmosphere was lovely until it wasn't. I was going to go in and speak with them about this, but I didn't have the courage. I can only hope they use this information to strive to have better awareness in the future, especially around disabilities in general.

Portion sizes have got smaller and smaller and prices higher. 3 stars on food due to the portion size, cost and presentation ( not taste) as that is fine. A plain baked potato was about £7.95? From memory then you had to pay extra to add. Topping! So £4 for 2 toppings. cheese and coleslaw bringing it up to £11.95. The Potato is nice but silly prices now and with the smaller sizes and now lack of nice presentation it’s just not worth it for me, sorry guys. If your getting it from other people then 👍

Post lockdown Hug is like night and day - gone is the old cramped odd layout - dark pokey corners, and slightly dodgy decor - in came a fresh new menu - an all day breakfast, burgers to drool over, Cullen Skink soup to devour, and quiche to rnjoy. Folk night is a wonderful open mike event - very relaxed - traditional songs abound and both enthusiastic and talented musicians make the night something more than special - magical would probably best describe it. Hug is a refuge from the madness going on around us - the staff are prettu laid back and pleasant. The menu isn't fussy or haut cuisine, it is however tasty and fuss free - come a long and give yourself a ""Hug".

Unfortunately, the food at Hug is of very low quality for the price. A grilled halloumi sandwich with chilli jam is not far off a tenner, for that price you'd be expecting it to be on bread that's above supermarket quality instead of what's on offer here. Unusually and revoltingly, considering the halloumi/chilli jam combination, the sandwich is loaded with margarine – this isn’t mentioned on the menu. The 'hand cut' chips are covered in a batter coating and taste like Wetherspoons chips, so I doubt whether they're hand cut at all. The coffee is always insipid. The polite staff seem to are Hug's saving grace.

I came in for a break been up and down on my feet most of the morning and afternoon. Decided to try an oat milk vanilla steamer extra hot and with froth & a slice of millionaire shortbread with dark chocolate topping. I was feeling very drowsy and tired and sort of fell asleep on the long couch at the window. Was really nice to see Nina again 😊 (blonde hair Nina) I wasn’t sure or Steph however as I was feeling dizzy and drowsy she asked me if I was feeling okay, I was half sleepy and half dizzy so thank you for making sure I was okay. 😷😵💫. Hug is a nice Coffee shop/Bistro one of a clutch of such places on Skirving St. Shawlands, Glasgow South Side. Theres a typical menu, of filled rolls, sandwiches etc but also a choice of special things for the more discerning Palate . My friend had Parmesan Truffle scrambled eggs on Sourdough toast and i had my favourite. Sourdough French Toast with Bacon & Maple Syrup. Both were of high quality and very delicious. Staff were lovely and friendly and service was good. Its a street where you are spoiled for choice but this venue is Ambient, great for meeting up for conversation with no blaring loud music, where you are guaranteed quality food and service😊 Return December visit. We had Full Scottish breakfast which was excellent. Otherwise no change.....no need😏

I'd say Hug's pretty much the definition of hidden gem. It's maybe overlooked (I know I didn't give it a second glance!) because it's part of a little bunch of premises on Skirving street that have changed hands over the years and always been fairly average cafes, in my opinion. But let me assure you, Hug is not average. It is superb. I stopped once to get a roll and square, with no kind of expectation it was just a convenient place, and was stunned just how lovely it was. Firstly, the roll was delicious - turns out they bake them themselves each day - and the square sausage tasted like at actually came from a butchers. I returned with my partner a few weeks later for brunch and again, it was exceptional. The menu is quite traditional Scottish, but the best version of the classic dishes and with plenty veggie and vegan options. This time I had the roll and link with tattie scone (wasn't disappointed: fresh roll again and sausages so thick they looked like they'd be drawn in a cartoon) and my partner had the sourdough toast with poached eggs and salmon. Also excellent. Oh, and terrific coffee too. I've still to try their lunch/larger meal stuff, but if they take the same attitude with ingredients and preparation as they do with the the brunch, I imagine they'll be great. I've nothing against the more trendy, Insta-famous places in Shawlands, but as winter is drawing in if you find yourself standing outside in a queue for breakfast, you could do a lot worse than take yourself to Hug. I doubt you'll regret it.

Really bad experience, we came here for brunch and the general attitude was that we weren't welcome when we asked for a high chair. We decided to stay although we were let down on the food. Eggs in a cup for a baby was served semi raw. The presentation is also not that great with bistro prices and greasy spoon appearance when the food arrives. It could do a lot better. The staff were generally very awkward and seemed to lack enthusiasm

My friend and I visited this cafe yesterday (1st of November, 2020). The waiting staff, coffee and food were all excellent. However, there was a man sitting next to us on his laptop (he had long greyish hair) who - when the staff moved the tables to make more room for other customers - spoke to them as if they were children. We believe he was maybe the owner/manager - but my goodness, his unprofessionalism was astounding. He was passive aggressive and belittling (especially towards the young female waitress with blonde hair) asking her questions such as “do you even know what a metre is?” and was getting visibly frustrated with her. Most of the cafe seemed to have clocked in on this, and the waitress was clearly upset. So we just wanted to let that man know, that we think it was extremely uncalled for - and matters with his staff should be a private issue, not a case of embarrassing them in the middle of the cafe. Please treat them better.

My friend and I visited here one Thursday evening in November. We had dinner at a nearby restuarant and didn't fancy their heavy desserts so opted here for some ice cream. Located in central Glasgow along a main street with lots of good eateries, it's perfect for dropping in without a booking. The staff were welcoming and showed us to our table. We were given menus and shown the QR code on the table which is how we ordered and paid for our desserts. Seamless. Presentation of the desserts is excellent and the ice cream was delicious. Nice comfy booths to sit in. Good value for money. Enjoy!
