Our experience at Arras York was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, the front-of-house team was incredibly professional, engaging with both me and my wife in a way that made us feel truly welcome. Their warmth and attentiveness added to the already refined atmosphere, setting the tone for a memorable afternoon. My wife chose Arras York for our Valentine’s weekend lunch, and it was a perfect choice. The food was nothing less than a masterpiece—each dish plated like a work of art, with every bite bursting with depth and flavor. The chef’s attention to detail, both in presentation and taste, was remarkable, elevating the entire dining experience to the highest level. The precision and finesse of the chef's plated service left me feeling both inspired and humbled. As someone currently learning plate artistry in the Royal Navy, I deeply admire the skill and creativity that went into every dish. While I am still honing my craft, today’s lunch has given me a new level of appreciation for the artistry and technique behind fine dining. A great little place for breakfast or a sweet treat! The staff were lovely, the atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and there's plenty of choice on the menu with something for everybody (including vegan diners!)

This place is nice overall but 2 glaring errors made me feel like it was necessary to write this review. Bottom line is service could be better and it’s not good value for money. Firstly, service. When I arrived at the bar I was told bluntly by the waitress that my table wasn’t ready and I’d have to come back in 15-20 minutes, despite me having booked in advance! This is an absolute schoolboy error in dealing with customers and immediately got things off on the wrong foot. It was only when I looked at her quizzically and was about to head back out the door into the cold that she twigged and found another table. This is basic stuff and completely unforgivable when you’re charging high-end prices. This brings me on to the second point, which is price. The prices in this place are eye-watering and would be enough to make even the poshest Mayfair Sommelier blush. All in all we had 3 glasses of wine each and 3 small plates to share with some bread and it came to over £60 each! That’s utterly insane for the North East. Yes the quality was good, but it did not deliver good value for money. As for the positives, 22 Yards does have a nice atmosphere, generally lovely staff (apart from that initial - and hopefully anomalous - interaction) and a good quality product. It’s just much too expensive for what it is.

Overall a disappointing experience. I went with my family (partner and children) on an early Saturday evening at 6pm. The main issue was that we waited one hour between ordering and receiving food. We received 20% off as a result, and the waitress was polite and apologetic, but I would not go back and risk getting the same service. In their shoes I would have brought some free drinks and bread, but these weren't offered. The food itself was nice when it came. However, given the prices (getting towards £20 for each main), I would expect 50% bigger portions of most of the meals. Overall I got the impression of a chain that is squeezing out more profit, for example by not employing enough staff, and sadly would not go back.
