I didn't book just walked in and was accommodated, some tables were reserved so it would be a good idea to book in advance. Great ticket system and you can set up a tab to pay at the end. Very friendly. I had the turkey dinner, they also had lamb, beef and gammon. The vegetables were superb and I think you can tell a good chef by the vegetables. Had jelly and icecream for pudding nice to see that adults could have that and not just on the kids menu. There were also cheesecakes and hot puddings available . I would recommend

We have been here a few times weekday evenings with niece and nephew 8/13 ages. Haven't been disappointed so far they catered for kids on each occasion and different choices each time. Reasonable too.

We had stayed once previously at The George but having enjoyed their generous afternoon tea, we'd never actually tried the restaurant. I cannot speak highly enough of both the quality and presentation of the food, equally matched by first-class professional service. For starters my wife chose the mussels whilst I enjoyed a 1/2 dozen Mersey oysters (small criticism - should have been accompanied by a couple of slices of brown bread!). To follow, my wife opted for the rump of lamb and I had the Dover sole - a good 500 grams worth - cooked to perfection in a rich butter sauce with capers and samphire. Desserts are homemade too - we recommend the pear tarte Tatin with its novel presentation. The entire meal was overseen by a very focussed, eagle-eyed maitre d' whose attention to detail was also quite noticeable. Would definitely return - especially for the fish.

Took niece and nephew for an evening meal mid week. After having visited a couple of times this year. The George is now under new ownership and seems to be working out well. The meals really quite nice with a varied menu. I'm slowly working through. All the meals we have eaten here have been cooked well and are hot. You can either eat in the bar area or in the restaurant same meals and service. The kids enjoyed their meals and empty plates which is always a good sign where kids are involved. They can't wait to return again. Pleased for the new management and hope it goes from strength to strength

I was also there on the 22nd June as per Tom L. I had a burger with cheese. I would never normally bother reviewing but it was the worst pub meal I've ever had. The chips below average but if it's possible to microwave a burger in the bun I am guessing that's what they did. Staff friendly but seriously terrible food that night

I stopped in the George for some food after a long drive. The staff were courteous enough. I did eat in the bar rather than the hotel restaurant so shouldn’t compare to those though I do imagine they are the same staff cooking. Once my food arrived I was presented with the worst battered fish I’ve ever seen. There was no cod fillet in there just a few flakes surrounded by ‘batter’. Clearly bought en masse from frozen. The food was cheep but I shall never return.

This pub/hotel, like so many, in remote coastal regions, is struggling to survive but if the staff have their way its future will be safe. It's like an old suit, a bit threadbare but still usable. We pre-booked for a Sunday carvery and enjoyed the food and the experience very much. There was a fair few customers that Sunday and all seemed very content to be there. A decent Sunday lunch cost under a tenner and all in my party agreed it was a good wholesome English roast. The staff were friendly and chatty and eager to serve. If you happen to be in that neck of the woods, it's in Lydd High Street with plenty of parking, pop in and try it. I wish them well at the George as they fight their rearguard action against the decline of the great English pub.

I called into the George for lunch today. The landlady said that they opened at 6pm for food and suggested I tried the Moon and Stars. When I said that I had already been there and couldn't open the door, she offered to open the kitchen just for me, which was very nice of her. I had some delicious carrot and corriander soup. Really helpful and friendly would recommend

Special thanks to Jenny and her team for providing a great venue and an impressive buffet selection after the Memorial Service for my Mum at Lydd Church last week. Teas and coffees - with delicious scones - were provided for folk arriving early for the service. Being a short walk from the Church the The George was ideally located for us. Jenny ensured that the buffet was tailored to our requirements, including provision for vegetarian and gluten free in a wide ranging spread. We were also assisted with table decorations and music. We were very pleased that the event delivered our wish to celebrate Mum's life with her family and friends.

Popped in on Sunday lunch time for a quick drink saw that they did a Sunday roast and thought we would give it a try .10 minutes after our order was taken ,our two roast lamb dinners arrived . 5mins later they we're gone ,they were the best pub roast dinners we have ever had . It came with veggies ,and could not fault it one bit ,and for only £6.95 , was excellent value . We were told by the new owners that have have only been there for 6 weeks . We said we will be back very soon. Anyone that finds themselves down that way should pop in for a drink, and do to forget to have something to eat also .

Heard this Hotel had changed hands, so thought we would give it a try, bought drinks (which the barman under changed my aunt, but did not notice until the next day), said we'd like to have an evening meal, looked at the menu, nothing exactly jumped out at you, a chilli con carne was being served, but looked like something my great dane had done on a bed of runny rice, no thanks, this used to be a nice hotel with a great selection of food. Its let Lydd down, we drank up & left.

Fed up with using the same restaurant every time I visit RSPB Reserve in Dungeness I tried the George Hotel in Lydd on 30th April 2012. I drove into the car park and was immediately unimpressed with their outside eating. Between car park and tables was a yard and most of the tables were in shadow against a wall - pretty uninspiring so we went inside. The back room, accessed via a corridor where the loos are, had a couple of tables and a pool table. We ordered our drinks and meal then walked through to the front room of the pub which is the first room from the road so, I assume the one normally accessed first by locals/walkers. This room is mock Tudor and, like every other part of the pub rather down at heel. The whole place needs a makeover and looks like a 'spit and sawdust' local rather than a nice place to eat.Having said that, the menu is impressively extensive with a lot of vegetarian options, appreciated by those of us who do not eat anything with legs. However, I chose a bog standard Cod in beer Batter, Chips and Mushy Peas, while my carnivorous wife went for the Burger and Chips. Our reason for these choices being that, if judging a place for future reference you can pretty well guarantee these ingredients are prepared fresh on site while more 'pretentious' meals such as a Mushroom and Brie Wellington might be ready made meals bought in frozen and just re-heated. (I am not saying this pub does this but many do.)My cod was very fresh and well cooked but I would have enjoyed it even more had it been completely filleted rather than lulling me into a false sense of security (cover something in batter and one assumes it is a fillet) and then surprising me with a bone a dozen times. Otherwise it was made up of good ingredients, well cooked. As a non meat-eater I am always annoyed that veggie burgers or 'filet-O-fish' never come with the trimmings you get with a 'normal' burger. However, Maggie was also disappointed that her burger was a (very good) beef pate, in a bun. She had been offered cheese (which was grated cheddar) but where were the onions, dill pickle, lettuce and relish that make 'junk food' as good to taste as it is bad for you?We left rather disappointed - nothing to complain about, but nothing to inspire either, nothing to draw you back for a re-visit, and all in rather depressing decor.

If you are looking for fast food then this is not the place. If you are looking for quality at a reasonable price then give it a go. went in not expecting too much, but was pleasantly surprised, The chef came to our table with his recommendations, suggested the steaks on the hot slab, which were excellent. no rush to the meal at all, the staff were more than happy to continue serving our drinks at the table, long after we had finished. we will be back.

It was the third time we headed towards the George's. We looked forward to our traditional fish and chips after a long drive from the continent. We sat outside since we had dogs along, as we had the previous times. This time though we had to wait more than an hour for our simple food. The Guiness was there a lot faster since we brought it ourselves from the bar. After about 10 minutes a waitress came to take our order, this was the last we saw of her. After half an hour we inquired and learned that our order was on hold since a large party had to be served before us. We sat in front of the open kitchen door and saw lamb chops being prepared and plates being filled, fish and chips going somewhere else, other dishes served. We complained and said we would like to leave. A man, maybe the manager, came to keep us in place, our order would be next... After another 20 minutes our plates arrived. In the meanwhile the sun had set and it became really chilly. Because of the dogs we couldn't go inside. It was a miserable meal. I have to admit that the fish was good, but due to the cold air everything on the plate was cold in no time at all.The staff was not friendly, we felt like intruders and not like customers whose money pays wages. We won't ever be back.
