Host has rebranded to Joel’s. I don’t know why Tripadvisor hasn’t been updated yet. Our family of four had lunch at Joel’s - solid ‘Asian street food’ cooked authentically. Really great addition to the area. Great kids menu. Exceeded our expectations

The restaurant and menu all look all very promising hence we walked in. The service was extremely slow but we were here for the food. The fried chicken wings were good quality chicken and nice size but the batter was non descriptive and a brown sauce was added which came from some packaged. Now i don't mind if Im paying takeaway prices from a fried chicken shop but not at these prices. The cauliflower was in a non descriptive curried sauce - again most Indian takeaways do a better job. The main course bowl of japanese rice ( large amount ) with 3 pieces of succulent chicken ( actually good). Best bit were the pickled onions. Again it was okay but not at these prices. I don't usually like to be negative but I really hope the owners take constructive feedback and improve. Its in a prime location in Ilkley and should be so much better.

Bad food ... Poor service ... expensive prices. After taking 40minutes to bring the food out, it tasted like fried MSG coated meat and badly cooked sushi rice. Don't waste your money. Motto from now on - if you think of going to Joel's, choose Gregg's instead! It's much much cheaper, better quality chefs and a more satisfying meal.

Came to Joel’s for Sunday roast, we both went for the beef (expensive but was a decent cut) the cauli cheese was amazing. Went for the prawn toast for starters which was super tasty, boyfriend had the chicken wings which were nice but with no wipes/finger bowl offered and only 2 small napkins on the table it was super messy! We did enjoy the food but when the price is quite high you expect good service too which unfortunately wasn’t the case for our visit. Restaurant staff all seemed young, blunt and uninterested, took around 15 mins to come get our drinks order, did check back on our mains but when we were on our last mouthful. The restaurant itself was nice but due to no soft furnishings absorbing the sound it felt very noisy even with only 2 other tables in. Hoping we probably just caught the staff on a bad day, because the food was really tasty so it’s a shame the service/atmosphere lacked this time.

We’ve been visiting for many years and we absolutely love the Sunday roast which is consistently unbeatable for quality and absolute deliciousness. I thought that it was time for another review as Joel & his team deserve it. Supporting an independent restaurant is a bonus, the food is just brilliant and the staff lovely. One of the team even remembers our order which is very impressive. The location at the end of the Grove is fab too, equally lovely on a cozy winter day inside or like today, basking in the sunshine outside on the terrace.

I much prefer restaurants where the chef pours his or her passion and expertise into a few carefully considered dishes rather than offering a mass of mediocrities. The food at 'Host' was excellent - aubergines melting in the mouth, delicious mackerel, quality chips without a hint of irritating sogginess. Portions were judiciously sized, wine was agreeable and reasonably priced, and the staff were very friendly and attentive. A pleasant buzz and hum of conversation permeated the place - always a good sign. A really fine restaurant, with imaginative cooking, that deserves local (and not-so-local) support in these difficult times for the hospitality industry.

We were so impressed with our meal here. We'd been before pre-covid and enjoyed it and were coming back with a vegan and vegetarian in the family to add to the mix. We flagged this when we booked and were provided with a vegan menu on arrival which was really appreciated by my daughters. The food was really good and the service was excellent with very attentive and friendly staff. We will definitely be back and would recommend to others.

The food was very good - as a vegetarian, I enjoyed the choice, the taste & the presentation. What I didn't much enjoy was the actual place (a bit shabby) & the feeling it was all a bit 'amateurish'. Some of the crockery was broken/chipped, the staff were inexperienced (not a 'responsible adult' in sight) & I was asked to hand out the cutlery to my fellow diners & to take a hot plate from the waiter because he couldn't be bothered to manoeuvre himself. Unimpressed & underwhelmed.

We ordered the brisket for a family birthday on Saturday last and we're all delighted by the meal. The beef was melt in the mouth, with portions to satisfy any local carnivore. Its gravy was rich, perfectly complementing the meat and the accompanying vegetable dishes were a delight. My only suggestion is that the timing suggestion for the delicious cauliflower cheese be somewhat greater. It would be a shame to serve such a lovely sauce in a lukewarm state. But this was easily remedied and did not spoil the meal. Or perhaps I should say meals, because we paused after the main course and decided to defer the sweets until the next day. Both the rhubarb and parkin trifle (note the seasonal Yorkshire ingredients) and the upmarket bread and butter pudding were an absolute treat. And the service. Well, we know about going the extra mile. Host literally went the extra six. We had chosen the busiest time of the day to collect the meal, at a time when the lunchtime barbeque was proving very popular. Somehow, our portions of carrot and fennel slaw had been missed from the bag of goodies. The first we knew of this "disaster" was a phonecall from Host, which was followed by a delivery some twenty minutes later.I have to say that we had not noticed the loss and would have thoroughly enjoyed the meal in its absence, but it added a crisp, sharp contrast to the meal which, in hindsight, would have diminished the experience.I would add that the meal was great value for money. Lockdown has brought a new interest in prepared meals for home service. This is up there with the best and I'm counting the days for another celebratory takeaway and counting the weeks to the freedom to try the cuisine in its own home.

Saving my lockdown, one takeaway at a time.I live locally - on my own - and really do want to "support local". This is made so much harder with many places in town now requiring a minimum charge, even for collection. From the beginning, Host has been wonderful for me - the fried chicken box covers my main meal that evening and an amazing sandwich the next day. The fish and chips is melt in the mouth. I've had to hold myself back from trying a pudding multiple times, but can't wait for when I do. Shout out to the owner too who manages to serve me within a 10 min wait when I walk in on my own for a treat meal these trying times. I know I'm not spending big bucks for a family but places like Host are making sure I'm not left out. Can't say the same for other places in Ilkley, so thank you Host.

Bought a beef 'sandwich' from the outside service area; the servers, one of whom was the owner, were handling the meat and bread with bare hands and wiping their hands on dirty jeans! The bits of meat was then thrown into a dirty tray of old onions to warm through!I was so embarrassed as we were buying for friends too, so against every instinct for our safety, I bought them! I should not have gone ahead, and certainly will never eat there again. Also, this is a sad indication of their kitchen hygiene once the restaurant re opens, so 'no thank you'.

One of the joys of Host is the choice of sharing plates but currently there is a very very reduced choice which is very disappointing. I am guessing this is due to COVID but if you've been before and are going back for the sharing plates I'd wait until the menu returns to it's former glory. On the flip side the Sunday roasts looked amazing and were coming out of the kitchen in good time. We ordered a range of dishes amongst the 6 of us and the food was really good. The menu changes regularly so there’s always a new dishes to try. Despite being fully signed up carnivores, we've found that the veggie and fish dishes are usually our favourites. Tip: If you see anything on the menu with the cheese custard order it - it’s to die for! Another great touch is that quite a few wines come by the 500ml carafe so you don’t have to sign up to a full bottle. We brought friends here for Sunday Lunch as we had been hearing great things about it. First of all, I have to declare that I am a fan of the restaurant, it's style and Joel's cooking. That being said I am always very fair and honest. We had a few platters to nibble and enjoy before the main event - the roasts. My goodness gracious me do they have someone in the oven inflating the Yorkshire puddings? Absolutely incredible, never seen them so large!! The meat though, without a doubt, is the star. Two of us had the melt in the mouth roast beef. One had the succulent roast pork with cracking to die for and the other had the aged duck. Comments from all....brilliant.We all had the chocolate pudding off the Gluten free menu.I must make mention of the staff for, no matter how good the guys in kitchen are, the folk out front can kill any place stone dead. Not here. The staff are lovely, they are attentive without being in your face and nothing is too much trouble for them. Well done.I love the wine list. Some very interesting wines on there which I am looking forward to sampling. Will we return? What a silly question, yes of course. This restaurant is exciting as it is daring to do things differently. The food does the talking though.

We went to Host for lunch in February for a family birthday lunch after receiving several recommendations. Overall the experience was a disappointing and not one to be repeated. On a positive note.... the food was very tasty. But that is as much as I can give it. The food is quite pricey and you don't get a lot for it (to be fair we knew it was tapas style before we went). We went on a weekday to celebrate our anniversary. All we wanted was a quiet corner and good food. We got a candle-lit dinner and excellent food. As the restaurant knew we were celebrating our anniversary, we had champagne on the house. We are not wine enthusiasts and so cannot comment on the wine list. However, it was pleasing to see that wine choices were recommended with desserts which was great for us who had very little knowledge. We had chicken, smoked haddock, celeriac and pumpkin. The vegetarian dishes were amazing. The batter for chicken was light and crispy and not oily. Although I felt that smoked haddock was slightly over seasoned, overall the taste was not hampered. The side of potato terrine was a revelation. To top it all we had ginger parkin as dessert. The cake was as light and moist and along with clotted cream and toffee sauce which was not overpoweringly sweet, it was a great end of the dinner.

Went with a group of friends for a birthday. I’m used to fine dining portions but as a vegetarian, the only 3 vegetable options were not sufficient to call it a ‘meal’. Suffice to say, I won’t be going back for that reason

We have eaten here three times now and love the food and the wine but every single time we have been shunted off to the small 2 table room at the back which has excluded us from the very pleasant atmosphere which seems to be present in the main part of the restaurant. There seem to be tables for two in the main part so why do we always end up stuck, usually on our own, in this rather isolated and atmosphereless area? We can only conclude that it is because we are of the 'retirement generation' and therefore are not considered trendy enough to be seated in the main area? (We have noticed this happening more and more in restaurants generally as we get older!!)

The butter fried chicken was very good. Despite some of the food being tasty, we were all dreadfully disappointed with the service. No coat taken despite at one time falling on the floor on due to the curved chairs. Menu description was vague. Water was never topped up throughout despite it being empty after around ten minutes in. No one checked back to see if we were enjoying it. Upon paying we were asked how things were. We went as a group of four & we chose 3 dishes each - three of us were meat eaters so we had all the meat & fish dishes & 3 veg dishes. They can stagger the courses so we had the fish dishes first followed by the meat. I have now eaten here on two occasions. And I honestly have no idea what the people who leave bad reviews are on about - they obviously have no tastebuds and wouldn't know a good meal if it slapped them in the face. I can't fault the service, from start to finish the staff are amazing. Attentive but not annoying and not pushy at all. You don't feel rushed either. - I love the concept of small plates, it is refreshingly different from your basic 3 course dinning experience. the food.. WOW - it is insanely good. The first time we opted for all the vegetable options and all of the fish options - the trout is amazing and so are the monkfish fritters .. the second time we went the menu had some delicious seasonal ingredients so we went crazy and ordered the whole menu (which, if you are dining with about 4 people is the best option as you get to try a bit of everything) The presentation is gorgeous and it tastes even better than it looks. I can't wait to go again for my birthday dinner in august and see what masterpieces the chef comes up with. Well done to the whole team - Host is an amazing addition to Ilkley.

Visited Host with my partner on a Friday evening. The place was busy but not too busy. Id say its a kinda of tapas place but not mexican/spanish, its good quality food where the menu changes. They advise to order 2 to 3 dishes each, so we had pigeon, monkfish in batter, hoggat (pulled pork balls), ceviche (raw fish in lovley sauce, pictured), asparagus, flat iron steak, 8 pieces in all and served medium rare, £22 for the steak & that was the dearest thing on the menu, but for 2? With a bottle of wine at £20 the bill was £82, so great value for money for great food. And as you can see buy the poster they do off the cuff stuff too. Enjoy

Let's face it. Host is a different dining experience. If you walk in without a degree of flexibility you might find 'sharing plates' outside your comfort zone. We find the contrary. The dishes are out of the ordinary certainly, but in a good way. The fact that you can eat an identical meal with your partner makes for sharing of comments, comparing and contrasting the tastes and presentation. We love it. The food is first rate. We did fall into the trap, however, of ordering too much. We had 5 sharing plates and two sides. Unless you have a very large appetite you can do without the sides or one less plate. I need not go through our choices - you can only read so much in these reviews, be assured they were all very good. There's a good choice of wines by the glass. My wife enjoyed the Soave while I thought the Albariño was splendid with the food. The Verdejo would have made a better aperitif however. If you get round to the Reds do try Les Volcans Pinot noir, a good French Pinot noir without Burgundy prices is a real treat. Staff friendly. Service very good. A splendid experience.

Visited on a Friday night after reading faultless reviews. The food was great for the price. The monkfish fritters were lovely as was the flat iron steak and pigeon. We ordered 3 snacks and 3 mains between two of us and we were very satisfied with our choices. We enjoyed the sharing aspect as we have the same taste in food. Red wine at £22 was nice. Service was good and staff were friendly but not consistant hence my 4* review. Also with such nice decor in the restaurant I felt the toilets could have been a bit more inviting and didn't reflect the restaurant as a whole. Was nice to try somewhere a bit different and will visit again.

Wow, faultless. We usually visit on a Thursday night for a couple of vinos and food sat at the bar. However, after seeing the Instagram post of the Sunday lunch I needed to go. I must say this is by far the best Sunday lunch in the area and so well priced. Staff as amazing as ever. We will be back on a Sunday.

Visited last night for my birthday dinner, but having read rave reviews from other customers, both my husband and I came home feeling a bit underwhelmed. The wait staff were great, very attentive and I particularly appreciated the advice we got on the wine list. I didn't know what to select, explained what kind of wine I like and they recommended what turned out to be a fab bottle of wine.

Visited for lunch after reading a 100% glowing review in the Yorkshire Post. Why this place isn’t fully booked months in advance is beyond me. This place is a must for any foodie in the region. And it’s incredible value!

Our first visit today at lunchtime with friends who live locally. Really enjoyed the food, great selection of different, in a good way, starters and main plates. I had roasted cauliflower on a sourdough flatbread which was gorgeous. We all had the same dessert, Parkin with a rhubarb sorbet, it was a delight. I would return without doubt and highly recommend this restaurant.

First visit to Host and highly recommend it. Will definitely be back. Thoroughly enjoyed the tapas concept, enabled us to have a true catch up with our friends whilst sampling the delicious food, and the staff knew when to check-in with us or let us get on with things. Although a time limit was put on the table to enable others to enjoy the experience, we booked at 5.30pm and were very gently reminded that there were dinners for our table at 8pm. Certainly long enough and didn’t spoil our evening. Food great, atmosphere spot on.

After reading the great reviews we booked a table for Saturday lunchtime. Host is a new restaurant that’s been open since December. It’s a well decorated and relaxing place with a good ambience. We received friendly and professional service from Gareth and Dan. We had the pommeau aperitif and a small dish of olives whilst deciding our menu choices. We chose five small plate dishes to share and thought they were all delicious. We especially enjoyed the monkfish fritters and the maple glazed celeriac dishes. We had a good bottle of Malbec red wine too. We really enjoyed our dining experience at Host and we’ll definitely return here again. We recommend you give it a try.

Nice venue and menu, we enjoyed the concept of small plates and had 3 starters and 4 mains including the pork shank which was the highlight. It was extremely good to mix the vegetarian and other plates rather than the usual sides.

My wife and I decided to visit Host, a relatively new restaurant in Ilkley after hearing very good reports from friends who had recommended. I'm glad they did. We were greeted on arrival by a friendly smile (even though slightly late!) and taken to our table and furnished with lovely well-presented drinks. The attention to detail is noticeable with little quirky twists. I had heard it was a slightly different concept in eating with an emphasis on sharing, and quality rather than quantity. I loved the ambience, as there was a nice balance of formality and professionalism but with a cool contemporary air, even with reference to the hint of a background soundtrack. Spacious & airy, it still had the 'buzz' & busyness of a Friday night. The staff were eerily attentive, yet not obtrusive. Very professional and extremely helpful and accomodating even though the restaurant was full.

With the world slowly drowning in diabolical chains it’s super important that we all start to support fantastic indie restaurants like Host: True Yorkshire hospitality, focussed on quality with not even a whiff of pretension.

Tried to get in here on a week end but apparently following some favourable reviews in the national broadsheets, that is no longer possible at short notice, so we opted for a Wednesday night instead. Place was nevertheless steady but not overfilled. Decor is subtle extravagance and feels relaxed. The dining room is a nice area. 2 people can just about get through most of the choice of sharing plates that they do on the limited but varied menu. All of them were delicious, and too good to name check individually - go on, just have them all. Service was attentive but not pressed and paced just right. Wine we chose was reasonably priced but tasted better than the cost. Overall highly recommended.

Interesting choice based on a tapas style menu. However many of the portions are very generous, so beware! Wine list perfectly adequate. Friendly, efficient & attentive staff. Nice "buzz" in the restaurant. Seems popular with the locals. We visited following a positive review by "Marina" in the Sunday Times Magazine. A pleasant experience.

This is a good addition to dining in Ilkley. A bit different as it has a tapas style menu. All of the dishes were good but a few days later I can't pick out one I really remember and enjoyed. It probably needs a wider range of dishes as with 4 of us we just ordered one of everything - there are only 12 options on main tapas section. None of deserts stood out so we didn't eat desert.

Visited Host for the first time last night and will definitely going back. A group of us went to celebrate our birthdays, on arrival the 2 of us who's birthday it was were greeted with a free drink and shown to our table. The food was amazing, we chose the chef's selection at £25, we started with snacks which included the best olives I have ever tasted, followed by a selection of small plates, the best dish for me was the cured sea trout with Apple and horseradish creme fraiche closely followed by the pork and chicken dishes and all veg and salad dishes were exceptional, there was plenty of food and we were left feeling full and satisfied. And then came the desserts which followed the trend of the rest of the food, sensational, what a chef. The staff were courteous, friendly and attentive and the restaurant is furnished nicely and has a good atmosphere. All in all a great restaurant which I would recommend to anyone.

We had a short break in Ilkley and looked for an Italian restaurant. This place was a revelation- the food was so very good. I would come back to Ilkley just to visit here again. The staff were excellent and the restaurant was spotless. Situated quite near to the station. Good price for an excellent meal. Thank you

Popped in on a weekday for tea. Both myself and my hubby had the steak and mushroom stroganoff. We didn’t like how it was served. The steak and mushroom sauce was in a dish alongside the smallest portion of rice and a bread roll (which we thought was very random). Banoffee pie was tasteless and sticky toffee pudding just ok. Always a lovely atmosphere and the waitress was lovely. Shame about our tea!
