Staff rude. Lacked manners and not very welcoming. Pub was clean, that's about it. Too interested in chatting the young men at the bar

Went on a Tuesday lunchtime about 1:30, the pub was quite empty, which surprised me, as on previous occasions, it was very popular! What had happened? Anyway, not to worry, the fish,chips and mushy peas were Vast, starters were impressive, and the sandwiches exceptional. So much so, that there was no room for a sweet. And even better , 20% discount for Gold card members.

Popped in to see if the had any tables left without booking, and the bar staff got us seated immediately. We only went in for a sandwich or something and ended up having the butchers block for 2. Well.......it was the nicest Sunday dinner I have ever had and worth every penny. The waiting staff were spot on. The food was exceptionally good. I will definitely 100% be back again. Thank you guys it made a refreshing change to go somewhere and it be..........perfect, well done

The hotel was beautiful, room was clean, food and staff were fantastic! I did think that the location of the hotel was a bit strange, the view from my window wasn’t great but I was aware of it’s position when I booked but otherwise, stunning hotel

First visit to the horse and Jockey for Sunday lunch. The restaurant area was very tastefully decorated and welcoming. My husband has special dietary needs where he cannot manage large meals. We chose to have the Sunday roast, my husband had the child’s portion. Perfect size for him. I had roast beef and he had turkey. Both meals were delightful. Service was very good. With having a smaller meal my husband had a raspberry tart and raspberry sorbet desert, and I had the honeycomb cheesecake. No complaints whatsoever. Thank you to all the staff

Came tonight for my dad’s birthday meal. Had to ask them to take the birthday cake from me as they didn’t so wasn’t off to a great start. It was slow from the get go took ages to ask if we had a table, get served drinks and then be sat down. Service was awful. Once sat down we had to get our own menus because nobody came over, once again waited ages to order. They brought starters and half the kids meals we ordered, messed up on the other. We then waited 30 mins for them to come and clear the table and 45 mins for our mains, oh and the kids meal they forgot and messed up. Nobody came back to see if the kids were ok or wanted pudding given that they had finished their food 45 minute before pizzas arrived. We all had pizzas which were awful. Sloppy bases which were practically cheese too much oil and sauce put on them just awful we all left majority of our dinner. A waitress came over so I complained and she fetched the manager to which we had to show him how bad it was he then walked off and bought us the bill which we hadn’t asked for or had our birthday cake brought to us. The bill had 20% knocked off but there was 4 inedible adult meals so 20% didn’t really cut it. We then had to go up to the bar to pay and I had to request for our boxed cake back which they didn’t bring us. Absolutely appalling service and food would not return here or recommend it and I certainly won’t be coming with my football ticket on Sunday.

Visited recently while on holiday. Having spent a while looking for a dog friendly food being served location around 4 p.m., I remembered seeing the horse and Jockey a few days earlier. I'm glad I remembered, food and ambience were excellent.

We have been several times before,the new menu is very limited and offers poor selection compared to the one we had read online which should be removed as it only confuses. Our food was only ok but greasy with soggy batter, soup too thick only one small portion of bread,our waitress was very helpful as some of our group have allergies. After our meal I was watching the end of a very close exciting cup football match, this channel was swooped without regard despite other TV ‘s showing start of the rugby,I suspect by the male manager, he looked a miserable soul never smiled possibly stressed. I think the lack of customers reflects failing standards the old menus needs reinstating urgently.

Called in on spec on a busy Sunday - restaurant full, but we got a quiet table in the bar area. Sunday lunch was excellent - huge Yorkshire pudding. We were advised it would be a while for food coming out after ordering, but we didn’t have to wait long at all. Just need to book in advance next time we go.

We visited the Horse and Jockey Wessington late afternoon to have a meal. The meal was absolutely awful. We had burgers which were soo over salted just could not finish our meals and sent them back! We were informed they are brought in and did actually give us 25% off the bill. The chips were also salty! The pub was cold, no heating or log burner going. Has really put us off returning any time soon!

Regular visitor, usually quite good. Had fish and chips, the batter was uncooked inside. If you can’t cook fish in batter correctly, then you should not be in the kitchen. Please get it right, customers need consistency of quality, then they will keep coming back.

Lovely family pub. Great for a stop off on the way to Matlock! Excellent service when talking through my dietary needs. Food was really good quality and nice atmosphere.

A cold & wet Sunday teatime found us searching for a cosy pub with food, having been here before but a while ago we thought we would try it. Not cosy and not warm however they could seat us quickly 👍 Husband had a burger with chips and onion ring ! Yes ring 😂 which he said was cold but the burger was ok My pork roast came swimming in gravy which was a shock normally you get to add your own, I think it had been stood platted for a while hence the gravy to moisten it, not a great roast I wouldn’t order again in fact we won’t visit again. Too many disappointing meals

Really tasty Sunday lunch, will definitely be back, only slight disappointment was that the menu states turkey with pigs in blankets but we only got the one ☹️ My husband had the butchers block and only one small slice of each meat.

Came in for a couple drinks and some chips to share & pick. Two staff were on the bar, the general manager Conor and another woman. What an amazing place but completely let down by its staff. No smiles, ignored us when making conversation at the bar when ordering drinks and had change thrown into my hand. Also noticed this was the same when other people were ordering. What a shame. My door matt at home has more personality and at least says welcome. They let this pub down after someone has done such a good job of the decor, design & food. Won’t come again,

Food was really nice really enjoyed it staff were very nice to us and were very quick with service would definitely go again

We decided to spend the night outside of the bigger cities in England and chose the Horse & Jockey at Wessington. It was easy to find and there was no problem with parking. We were greeted at the bar and shown to our room by one of the employees who dropped everything he was doing. (Great service). The room was spacious with 2 twin beds. Clean and well appointed. The bathroom, however, had a bad musty smell - we think due to the towel heater being on. We closed off the heat and it helped, but the smell lingered through the night and into the next morning. Unfortunate. The beds were of a good quality - good linens…but pillows to hard for my liking (can’t always please everyone). My partner loved the pillows. Instant coffee/tea/hot chocolate available with ceramic cups. Plastic cups for drinking —- glass would be nice. Our room faced the road, but there was not much noise during the night. We had dinner in “The Basement”. My partner had a pizza which was delicious and I ordered the salmon. The salmon was average - nothing to write home about, but it did the job. Wine was good. Dinner for two with wine was under 40 pounds - very reasonable. Service was fairly good. Breakfast is included, but I haven’t had it yet, so I might have to edit this review. Good value here for the money.

Had an impromptu stop here on our way home and so glad we did! It’s a really lovely pub, nice atmosphere and friendly helpful staff. Really reasonably priced for the quality of the food served and the portion sizes. I had steak and ale pie and chips and it was absolutely delicious. My husband had steak and chips and he said his was really good too. My son had chicken fillets and chips from the kids menu and he was happy too. Very glad we found them! Would highly recommend!

The service, food and drink is excellent, the staff are friendly and everything comes really quick even though when they are busy. We hadn't booked but they fit us in straight away.

Visited here for a meal last Saturday and really enjoyed it. Place is rustic with a good atmosphere and the staff were pleasant and friendly. We all ordered different dishes and everyone in our party of four enjoyed them, my haddock and chips was lovely, fresh produce cooked well. The cocktails were delicious and a decent choice of beers. Will visit again.

I recently stayed at The Horse & Jockey as part of my best friends wedding. Myself, the groom and 2 other friends were staying the night before the wedding and had booked a table for food along with the grooms family. I ordered the Jockey Burger and it was amazing. Cooked to perfection and the chips were also really really good. We stayed in the bar area and continued to have some drinks and play pool and darts. Darren was working on the bar and was really friendly and helpful and was chatting to us all night. The room I had was one of the double rooms and was really nice, clean and spacious. The bed for me, was really comfortable, but the following night, my partner said she didn't sleep too well. The morning of the wedding we had a complimentary breakfast and went for the house English (full English) again, really good quality food and very filling with a massive slab of white bloomer. All in this was a brilliant place to eat, drink and sleep. We didn't get discounted rates for the wedding being at The White Hart but even at full price I would pay it still. I also messed up and left my dental retainers in my room and when I got home, I called and was advised they held on to them for me and I was able to retrieve them later that day. 10/10 experience for me. and would 100% stay again!

Me and my partner visited here with my grandparents as a surprise meal for them, the staff were very welcoming and even tho we turned up 10 minutes early they still managed to get us seated at our table! The cocktails were lovely and very good service🍸✨ We ordered starters which was absolutely stunning and we were not kept waiting long, we then ordered 4 total different dishes and we all said how amazing the food was and how good the presentation was. I want to say this is definitely one of the best places I have eaten❤️ Definitely will be visiting again!!!

Amazing food. Very busy (Sunday16th July) but manager's composure was impeccable. Very impressed with his ability to problem-solve, multi-task and smile. Lovely place. Dog friendly and nice welcoming touches for furry friends.

Delighted to have come across The Horse and Jockey, a modern coaching inn which is well situated for the southern Peak District. The two night mid-week stay was well priced and included a lovely spacious room and excellent meals. The bar and restaurant were busy at times but I take that as a positive. The staff did well. 2 x dinners and breakfasts were all excellent. Good cocktails too

Literally don’t know where to start. It was without a doubt the worse place I’ve been to. The bar staff didn’t have a clue what was going on, they were totally clueless. The food was disgusting. I had a burger, a nasty tasting beef patty, soggy lettuce, cheap burger cheese and nasty bread. My friend had a roast Turkey cob with fries, it came as a Sunday roast. When they did bring the cob, it was dry, flavourless and came with roast potatoes, not fries, they were as horrendous as my fries. We could barely eat it. You stick to the floors, the toilets aren’t clean…. I could go on. Avoid this place at all costs!!!

We stayed over while visiting friends. Great place. We had an evening meal which was lovely, good portions. Service was excellent. The room was big, clean with everything you would need.Staff were very attentive. Then breakfast in the morning was great, full english and eggs Benedict, what more could you ask for?

We usually book at chesterfield but as it was a last minute trip on a bank holiday we had to venture further out to alfreton for availability and were we glad this happened as we stumbled upon the horse and jockey. We arrived after a long day out to be greeted by a lovely receptionist called Chetan who showed us to our room , something hotel staff rarely do these days so we appreciated this. The experience continued as it began from an incredibly clean and immaculately maintained furniture and linens . The bedroom furniture had no expense spared. To boot the cleaning staff have done an amazing job of maintaining the premises so wonderfully. Would have appreciated more tea bags and also the option of oat milk which was available at the sister hotel the white Hart at breakfast. The vegetarian breakfast was adequate and cooked well and tasty it was very kind of the chef to substitute out and add things for us which we very much appreciated. It was far better than the vegetarian breakfast at the sister hotel the White hart. The downside was that the staff was scarce and service very very slow especially given we seemed to be the only other couple at breakfast We asked lily and another lady serving at breakfast just to clarify if we were able to maybe get a pastry or yoghurt aswell as the cooked breakfast as breakfast was included and despite asking twice she never came back to us with any kind of answer after saying she would check. She didn't even apologise at checkout that she didn't come back to us or ask if everything was ok . That in itself was a big disappointment with the service. The stay was just one night but really have to compliment the ample parking space, the secured WiFi which worked and the amazingly hot and powerful shower system . Would be great if hotels would also provide complimentary toiletries which weren't full of harmful parabans . Overall it was a very comfortable stay with a good initial service. The noise was substantial throughout the rooms til quite late as inconsiderate guests were loud beyind 10pm and the walls are very thin. Apart from that a very good stay. Also one of the few hotels not ripping people off because it was a bank holiday and the price with breakfast was amazing. Thank you. True hospitality at its best. The feedback is meant in a positive way and not as critisisms. I would not make the time to write if I didn't think this place really excelled and could be really quite uniquely brilliant .

The food is pretty standard, nothing special and nothing to return for vs the price you pay. We’ve been on a couple of occasions to both the bar and restaurant and the service is ridiculously slow. The bar staff appear to be interested in everything else but promptly serving people.

Arrived on a cold wet afternoon. No welcome, just stood at the bar as advised by sign on arrival, being ignored. Bar staff didn't acknowledge us but eventually waitress offered us a table. Bar staff looked like they would rather be anywhere else. Food was ok, not worth rushing back for. Decor was lovely and place was clean.
