Never having been at this pub, I had an open mind. We were greeted by a genial host who served our drinks at the bar. Then we moved into the dining room and when I saw the massive beef and equally huge turkey roasts, I knew this was a wise choice. Served by the generous lady of the house, it was accompanied by roast potatoes, mixed veg, cauliflower and a good selection of gravy and delectable sauces. Everything was cooked to perfection. This was ounded off by a choice of deserts. What a pleasure to enjoy your fine food! Thank You, I will definitely return!

We booked for Sunday lunch carvery - and yes you will need to book! On arrival we were not sure, but the landlord was friendly and was lighting the log burner in the lounge. We had a drink and waited for the dining area to open. When the landlady opened up it was clear that many locals know how good the food is. Some critics would say the food is simple and could be this or that. What we can say is that the food was all freshly cooked and tasted fantastic. There were two meats, beef and pork. A good selection of veg, potatoes and accompaniments. The deal was £15 for two courses so we had the homemade desserts also. My apple caramel pie and cream was a huge portion and clearly homemade with love. My wife said he pecan pie was one of the best she had eaten. If we are ever in the area again on a Sunday we will be booking in here. Good Honest Home Cooked Food

Dropped in for a drink on two occasions. We got a warm reception on both occasions. Reasonable range of drinks at a fair price. Lounge is a pleasant room. For a weekend it was very quiet.

A friendly local pub, Dave was a great host when we visited the pub the previous day before we booked Sunday lunch especially following the 5 star reviews on trip adviser, we were not disappointed. At the carvery I chose the beef with my wife selecting the turkey and beef, with a good selection of vegetables we really enjoyed our Sunday lunch. We really enjoyed our visit to the Horse and Jockey, added to the tales of a mysterious ghost appearing around the pub, it’s well worth a visit to the pub, if you are in the area on a Sunday.

3 of us were on our way to meet some friends and were desperately trying to find somewhere for a bite to eat. Third time lucky we stumbled upon this little GEM. We were instantly welcomed by Dave and his wife, the food was insane not to mention £3 for a gin!! It was so good we stopped back in on our way home on the Sunday for a carvery - best. Decision. EVER!! It was full of locals which says it all, I would recommend this to anyone in the area!

This is an independent pub serving a relatively small menu but you are spoilt for choice. Excellent home made food - hot and tasty classics and a Sunday carvery that beats any Toby etc into a cocked hat. Pies to die for. Oh and the beer and cider are good too. Don't forget to check out the salt and pepper pots And there is a caravan (camping(?) field too.

We have heard some great reviews about the carvery at the Horse & Jockey so decided to try it for ourselves. All I can say is the reviews don't really do it justice. The food was great with the beef being very tender, great choice of sweets and all for under £50 for the 4 of us! Shall certainly be calling again.

We were driving through the area looking for a campsite and somewhere to eat when we saw the "camping here" sign on a lamp post. We walked in and were greeted warmly by the landlord. Parking our van for the night would be a tenner and we were in luck as they'd got live music tonight. That turned out to be a full jazz ensemble from the local area who were really good (and we're not jazz fans). The food was the normal kind of hearty pub fare, but better quality and cheaper than your average, at least where we're from. We both eat meat but noticed how good the veggie options were. There was a good selection of local ales and we sat at the bar chatting away with the staff and being well entertained for the evening. In the morning the shower block was very clean with seemingly endless hot water. Overall I couldn't rate it highly enough. If I'm ever passing that way again I'll be back.

Have eaten here before for Sunday lunch - which was great - excellent quality and reasonably priced. Having been let down elsewhere we rang on the way to see if we could be accommodated for food - having forgotten that it was Jazz night. Staff were very helpful - nothing was too much trouble, food was really tasty and good value. And the jazz was an added bonus!

Absolutely fantastic place. We tried to book Mellington Hall just a few miles away but were rudely refused as we were wedding guests. Ever so thankful for it as the welcome and the food at the Horse and Jockey was a cut above the disappointing above mentioned Hall. Could not fault our stay. Staff and landlord went out of their way to please. Many thanks from Dave, Jenny and Bandit the dog.

ReviewWe recently called into this pub as we were in the area and had seen the good reviews. We both find it very hard to understand how this place has received such rave reviews. I'm afraid our experience was in almost complete contrast. As we walked in there was the unmistakable smell of urine as we passed by the toilets and the place didn't look as if it had had a decent clean for quite a while. The ales on offer, although guest not permanent beers, were not good and my husband said it was actually the worst pint he'd had for a very long time. We were surprised that the publican wasn't offering a beer that was proven to be popular as a consistent/permanent offering; there were only guest beers available. On a positive note the publican was very friendly and welcoming. Not, I'm afraid, enough for us to want to go back to this pub without someone haven't given it a damned good clean and a more discerning choice of ales.

We spent one night on the caravan site behind the Horse and Jockey, and ate in the pub. This is a cosy, unspoilt pub - not one of the soulless, chain pubs which seem to be everywhere, these days. The landlord is very natural and friendly. The beers on offer are changed regularly, and my OH enjoyed his pint. The menu is fairly varied, traditional pub food with a specials board. We both ordered gammon which was freshly cooked, chips and veg were plentiful and hot, and the price very reasonable. We would definitely go here again.

First time visit to this venue to hear some friends play with their jazz group, The Dragon Band. Every Wednesday at 8 pm.Warm welcome from behind the bar, nice pint, enjoyed the music. Didn't eat, but a plate of chips that came by for another customer looked appetising.Fairly quiet in there, but I believe there is usually a larger crowd on a Wednesday.

Having booked for over 20 for a set meal we arrived with more than 30 all told and more than half an hour late. Dave and Heather stepped up a gear for us all feeidng and watering us whilst the pub was packed and the caravan site full to overflowing on one of the hottest days in the year so far. We were stretching the kitchen with our numbers so had a simple set menu, added to this were some vegeterian choices, requests for extra chips and even ice cream for the kids. All went down very well with all but one very satisfied with the food, service and the drinks. One unfair complaint about a choice of only two flavors of ice cream from one of the kids proving that you can never please everyone. Really appreicate the efforts of a hard working family running a great real country pub.

First time writing a review.Visited over whit week bank holiday week end.Just come back from four nights with friends at The Horse and Jockey 3 tents and a camper van. After reading the one review I was a little apprehensive for the weekend but this was quickly quenched and a great weekend lay in store. A very friendly welcome from the landlord who showed us to our pitches, we had a corner plot that was great for us all.Pitched tent and set up our kit. When into bar for a little slight refreshment to wait for friends to arrive. Mark and Sharon with two teens in camper (Albert the Talbot)., before setting up we all sampled (adult) a few of the 12 different ciders on offer (these ranged from rough scrumpy to tapped drinks). This meant that the yawning stayed down for the first night. The locals were all very warm and welcoming which is not always the case at some sites that I have visited. Then the sun came out.Last couple were late again!!We went to a great car boot sale sale on the Sunday morning which is around a 15 minutes walk away and ended up with a selection of items that my wife felt that she could not live without.Over the weekend we did a come dine with me evening where every couple had to prepare a 3 course course meal for less that £25.00First night Prawn Pil Pil, Chicken Paella and then forest fruit panecotta. Second night soup, lamb in a van and home made jaffa cake desert (can't say how Sharon made the orange and tangerine jelly but it was fun watching). Then in my mind on the last night was the winning meal by Sharon and Rob which was fish cakes, chicken in Stilton on a bed of rice and eton mess for Pud. Who said you can only eat beans on toast when you go camping try it it saves lots of money on waste and only one night of cooking.Unfortunately we are not the winners this time in my mind but I did whisk the cream and broke up the meringue for desert so I will take some of the credit. Never mind we will try again. We started each evening with an aperitif in the bar which always set the evening with a merry relaxing start.I would like to thank all of my friends for coming along and preparing great food on their nights (even the big one who I don't really like). It was great to see them all and catch up.With good friends a great bar to start the evening off a great price for plots about £10.00 per night with leccy together with friendly locals I would recommend the Horse and Jockey for a great camping experience.Great idea to have toilet cleaner and bleach available in the toilets (basic but what do you expect for the price) however why not put a dust pan and brush with the mop bucket. My only criticism would be. Please ensure the toilets have more paper in them.Thank you Horse and Jockey and hope to see you soon.Simon and Claire.

I visited this Public House, which is adjacent to a caravan site, recently for Sunday lunch. It was priced at £9.45 for one course or £12 for two. I opted for the one course and although I thought it a little over priced I expected the quality to reflect the price. However it did NOT.... the carrots were frozen, the roasties were greasy, the beef over done and the other veg were over boiled. the Restaurant was dire and needed a make over....... Sadly this venue does not reflect the prices they charge and I will not be returning.
