We booked our table for 12.30 as we love it here and it’s always busy. We sat down with our lovely drinks and looked at the menu and the specials board both of which are amazing,my husband had the special curry and I had the small cod and chips which were delicious and the wait wasn’t long from ordering. The staff are really friendly and very knowledgeable, the toilets are clean and dogs are more than welcome here . Brilliant playground outside for the kids and you can eat outside too. We will be back this place is lovely and in the winter the log fire is lovely and the atmosphere is very nice too!.

Our host recommended this place. I was intrigued by reviews of previous guests regarding the burger, which allegedly the chef could do pink (medium rare). However, despite me specifically asking for the same, I was served an over-done burger; nothing special. Kids pasta was done from frozen sauce and did not taste nice. My wife’s steak and ale pie had delicious beef chunks and gravy; however, the pastry was overdone. We won’t be coming back.

We were staying just down the road and visited for a mid week meal. We had booked a table, I'm glad we had as it was quite busy. The food was great, our daughter is 13 so too old for a kids meal but alot of the time wouldn't eat a big meal so it was great to see some of the menu items had a "smaller appetite" option, she had mac and cheese and really enjoyed it. Everyone else's food was really good, puds were a big hit too. We will definitely be visiting again on our next trip!

We went to the horse and groom for a meal on the first night of our stay, we were a family of four with two teenagers who aren't always the easiest to feed. We had a fantastic meal, the kids had burgers my wife had scampi and I had the ham and eggs, we all said what a great meal we had eaten and all of us were full from the plate portion we had received. We ask for a couple of items to be removed from the burgers which the staff happily accommodated when ordering. We enjoyed the meal so much we returned for a second meal there later in the week of our stay and this was equally as good. Steve and his team give excellent service with a cheerful smile, and we are delighted to have eaten at this establishment.

This is a lovely pub serving good food all day from 12 o’clock. It has a fair size car park which is mostly busy! The service is good and the staff are all friendly and helpful. The food is good with a comprehensive menu and daily specials. Sunday lunch is great (you need to book!) and lots of dishes are served regular or small which is good when you have a smaller appetite and don’t like to waste food. First impressions on entering are it is a little tired and could do with a bit of tlc but that does not put us off.

Review as follows: Food Over the course of a week we visited 3 times, the food was very good on 2 occasions and superb on the Sunday when we had a roast dinner. Honestly, it was as good as it gets for a roast. Drinks Cider and lager both good. Service The staff are fantastic, really can’t do enough for you. Stopped here for lunch before a ferry crossing home. It’s one of few pubs open at 11.30 rather than 12. We ordered three baguettes with chips and drinks and it was superb whilst sitting in the glorious sunshine. My mum fed our dog some of her sticky glazed ham from her baguette which he thoroughly enjoyed and realising that we wouldn’t be home until around 8pm I thought I needed to get something for the dogs dinner. On finishing our meal and taking all the empties back I asked the waitress if I could buy a couple of slices of the ham for the dog on the journey home. She saw the chef who duly cut some off the bone and brought it to me. I tried to pay her but she said no charge and I was truly shocked and delighted with their service. We ate here 2/3 years ago when on the island and I have to say attention to detail and service is at great as ever

We are staying a bout a mile down the road and decided to try this pub for dinner on our first night. On entering the pub we were greeted by a pleasant member of staff who showed us to a nice quiet table. The dining area is large and spacious. The menus showed and range of typical pub food and there was a good selection of it. What did impress us is that most dishes were offered in smaller portions if required. We adults ordered chilli and scampi and the kids (13 & 11) had a small rump steak and a regular sized hunters chicken. All the food was both of excellent quality and very generous in size. The food was very tasty and in 3 out of 4 cases too much to finish. We didn't have pudding as we were all too full but the bill came to £70 including 2 rounds of drinks and a tip. This pub comes highly recommended.

Foolishly we hadn't reserved a table in advance (hey there were only 4 of us, this was a Thursday lunchtime in October, not a Saturday evening or a Sunday lunchtime in August). We'd had a lovely 4-mile walk beforehand so really ready for a bite to eat. We'd also eaten there before a few years ago and been impressed.Sadly the place was already as full as it's currently allowed to be, with correspondingly reduced staff numbers, so we had to go. I was pretty miffed at first, muttering to myself about the staff enjoying the power to turn people away. Then I calmed down and saw sense. Would ANY business enjoy turning customers away? Yet this scenario's probably being played out again and again in these troubled times. Just glad the place is doing as well as it is.

I feel the need to sing the praises of the Horse and Groom, and their sister pub, The Griffin, in Godshill, both on the Isle of Wight. Both have the best family gardens that I have ever seen in a pub. They have Football goals, play areas, crazy golf /a maze, all of which they have kept open, despite COVID. When you have lively young children, cordoning off the play areas and telling children they have to sit still at the table (which some pubs have done in the name of COVID, when public playgrounds are open), just makes life very difficult and parents cannot relax either. But here, there was good food, reasonable prices, kind and patient staff who couldn't do enough to help, and lots for the children to do. Just brilliant!!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

After visiting the Horse & Groom many times over the past five years when on holiday, and always enjoying, we booked a table here a week in advance as we thought it may have been busy due to the restrictions regarding Coronavirus.Upon arrival, whilst being fairly excited to dine here, we were met with mostly disappointment and confusion. When entering there were no clear instructions as the whether we had to seat ourselves after signing in for track and trace or wait to be seated, after waiting around for a few minutes we decided to try to find our table. We were then left waiting for menus and were still unclear on instructions on how to order safely. Bearing in mind that we had also visited a number of other restaurants and whilst I can understand that every restaurant has a different way of doing things, we were concerned at the lack of direction and preventative measures that were being taken. Although I don't know what is mandatory in the way of PPE and other safety precautions, the visits with other restaurants around the island indicated that some form of PPE was to be worn to keep both customers and staff safe. When handed menus they came to us sticky, and not very nice to touch. whether or not this was due to sanitation i'm not entirely sure but it was not pleasant. We were then left to work out how to order our food, whether we needed to go to the bar and order or if we were to stay at our table and be served from there. After seeing another customer go to the bar and order we assumed that, that was the way to go. We ordered our food with no trouble and waited, we had both ordered "freshly battered catch of the day" leading us to believe that the fish would be fresh. After our food arrived we soon realized that is wasn't quite edible... the battered cod that we had received was soggy and watery, and didn't taste like the fresh fish that we had expected. After eating here many times before and having this meal before we were met with disappointment. But speaking to the lady behind the till didn't exactly do us any favors, after asking for one of the meals to be knocked off the bill and doing so. No apology was given and the argument that we were given was that the fish was brought in frozen and "freshly battered" meaning battered in the restaurant, but the fish was frozen, despite being the catch of the day? but we couldn't give an argument because I technically speaking it was exactly what the menu described... "freshly battered" so after our disappointing visit we ended up going home just as hungry as when we had arrived. We understand that sometimes things don't always go right, and we weren't expecting perfectly cooked meals but we did expect nice food and after being a frequent visitor we were unhappy with our visit. We did not expect to have an arrogant response try to reason why we weren't happy with our food. The atmosphere was not very welcoming and we didn't feel at all like there we any procedures apart from signing in for track and trace in place to keep us safe.

Being my first visit to the Isle of Wight, and after travelling for 6 hours to get here the easiest thing to do was go to somewhere for dinner. We had already pre-booked because if the "Eat out to help out" scheme because we knew it would be tough getting in anywhere. So we turned up 15 mins before our allocated booking time, there was a sign at the door advising they will be taking details for track and tracing. There was a small table with "track and trace" detail book to fill out and some hand sanitiser which was good. That's about as good as it got. We stood for 5 minutes waiting for guidance as to what we needed to do, because most places we've been to recently clearly stated that you'd be shown to a table, to minimise you walking around the place. However, this was not the case here. There were also no signs asking for face coverings to be worn, meaning a lot of people were walking in without them. After eventually grabbing the attention of the somewhat head in clouds members of staff, who didn't seem to have enough about them to even know tmwhere they worked or how to even tie their own shoes, we found our table, which needed a wipe down and all plates etc from the people before to be cleaned away. I'd like to add here that there were 2 sittings when we booked - the previous one being at 2.30pm...we arrived at 6.15! It was sticky after, so I assume it was with some sanitizing product. After ordering our drinks and food at the bar all seemed ok, but that's when things went down hill even quicker. Our starters came out, which I have to admit mine in particular was tasty, just a shame it wasn't complete. Before the employee brought it to the table some of it fell on the floor, yes ok, they didn't pick it up and put it on my plate, but there was no apology or even any replacement It wasn't even mentioned to me. It was one battered king prawn after all, it would have been shellfish of me to grumble at the staff for this...... . After finishing our starters, we had to remind the staff that we had also ordered mains, and asked for it to be brought out after waiting 20 or so minutes after we had finished our starters.Admittedly when they came out they were piping hot, which by today's standards is amazing for any establishment. The onion rings however tasted like engine oil. The burgers were, I think made of 80% grease and the rest meat and whatever else is in them. Needless to say it wasn't fully devoured. The staff didnt really seem to have any direction as to what to do when it was busy, I'm no business man, nor claim to be a food critic but if you know you're going to busy especially on Mon, Tues and Weds, make sure your staff have a good understanding of a relatively decent level of customer service. On the whole, great ales, but severely lacking in quality in the food department. It's a good thing they're on the Eat out to help out scheme, if they weren't I'd steer away from eating here.

We stumbled upon The Horse & Groom last saturday while staying on the IOW and went in for lunch. We were really impressed with the food and so returned the next day for lunch too! My husband had the butternut/beetroot/goats cheese burger both days and liked it so much he made some himself this week. I had the lasagne on Saturday (which was slathered in melted cheese) and the breaded fish combo starter (from blackboard) with chips as a main on Sunday. They also do a carvery sunday which seemed very popular. We arrived at 13.00 on Sunday and were surprised to still get a free table as the car park was packed. Service was fairly quick and the food very nice. The only minus was on saturday we sat near the open fire and it was absolutely sweltering, I stripped down to a vest-top but was still dripping! On sunday we sat up the other end but heard people saying how nice it was to get out in the fresh air afterwards! So a tip, maybe only use the open fire in winter as it was extremely uncomfortably hot!

Staying locally and dropped in on a busy Saturday night, made to feel very welcome. Faire was good honest food, well cooked and plenty of it, with an inventive menu to suit all palates. A pub/restaurant catering for all classes, including families with hungry kids who want amusing. People who complain about service when they drop in, in the middle of a very busy Sunday - well what do they expect, one to one service?

We had dinner here one evening whilst on holiday nearby. We reserved a table for 6 adults and four children. as well we did as this place is clearly very popular and has the best toddlers playground we have seen, which our youngest member age four, enjoyed. We all enjoyed our meal and the service was good. We thought it would be lovely to have a lunch there, sitting outside, but we ran out of time!

We have recently been to the Isle of Wight and decided to try the Horse and Groom so glad we did. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and as for the food well where do I start, my daughter and I had starters I had the spicy wings and rings they were really nice and my daughter ahd brie wedges and said she could of ad a whole meal of just them. For the mains my daughter and myself had the steak both medium and they were just perfect my wife had butterflied chicken breast with garlic sauce and m grandson had mac and cheese the portions were on the generous side. I would highly recommend the Belgian waffles as afters they are to die for. We visited twice and I had the ribs and chicken do not attempt unless you have a good appetite. All in all a great family pub with great food and as a bonus there is a great children's play area including a bouncy castle

We saw this pub whilst driving past, so we researched the menu and it looked nice enough to try. It was very busy, with all tables reserved (which is always a good sign I think), but the bar team worked hard to find us a table. Ordering at the bar was efficient and we opened a tab as opposed to multiple payments. The food was immense! Great portion sizes, and freshly made. I had the steak pie and I really enjoyed it. Staff were attentive but not over the top either, so we were able to enjoy our food, whilst they were also friendly from the start. We enjoyed it so much that we reserved a table for the next day (partly because I was too full for the desert that I really wanted!) The next day was just as fantastic.

Went quite excited as they had a few vegan options and weren't ridiculously priced. The mushroom and tofu burger was a bit disappointing however - very soft tofu not really cooked in the best way for a burger and not enough chutney. Chips were delicious though and portion size was good.

We visited the horse and groom on Wednesday 7th August at lunchtime with friends and our children, we decided on food and my friend and I went in to order the food, there were 2 girls serving, my friend got served and then another man pushed his way to the bar and got served but I decided not to make a fuss, the girl serving looked up at me a few times so knew I was there waiting, after she had served this man I stepped forward and she started serving another person, I said to her “excuse me, I think it’s my turn next, I was waiting before this woman and the man you have served” she replied and said “Oh” the woman she was serving was really rude and said she had hungry kids and I said so do I, I have 3 hungry children which is why I have been stood here for 15 minutes, the bar girl shrugged and carried on serving other woman! I said to her “forget it, we won’t be eating here” we then had to leave our friends there as they had already ordered and find somewhere else to eat(which we did, highly recommend the white lion at Arreton, amazing food and service) maybe they could try hiring more staff and brush them up on their customer service! Cannot comment on food as did not get a chance to try it!

As my parents live in the village, we came over from the main land to visit. The parents haven’t been to the pub for years and recently mother has been in poor health and broken her hip. We booked a table by phone and I then phoned a few days later to ask for the table earlier nothing was a problem and a very courteous service from the member of staff. We found our table close to the door ideal with mother’s mobility issue. The menu is excellent, and you can even have smaller plates at a reduced price. Parents had the Fish and chips, daughter had the Hunters chicken with a mozzarella cheese topping, son had the burger with doner meat which he claimed was one of the best burgers he’d eaten, I went for a small plate of the steak and ale pie with veg. The wait was about 1/2 hour but as the food was cooked fresh we didn’t mind waiting. All in all a pleasant family meal and will be back soon.

Family meal for 13, something for everyone. Large portions but they do accommodate a smaller appetite. Just one little moan, I chose moules and frites, but recieved moules and chunky chips. Asked the waitress for my frites and she said" you've got them" ! I told her they were chips, she said "same thing". They are no way near the same thing. Mussels not very nice, most as small as my little finger nail. Lesson learned, eat seafood in a better restaurant. Every one else in our group enjoyed their meal though.

We decided to have lunch here as it is on the main road to Yarmouth and we were on our way to the ferry terminal. There is a wide standard menu and a good choice of specials, so finding something that appeals is easy. We chose breaded haloumi and Camembert starters, which were good. The haloumi in particular was a very big starter and the chutney with it was excellent. When we had finished our starter we sat with our dirty plates in front of us for around half an hour before they were cleared just before the main courses arrived. We didn’t mind the gap between courses but plates should have been cleared sooner. Mains were good but as we had been over ambitious having starters, we couldn’t get through them all. Once again, the dirty plates just sat in front of us for ages. The pub was very busy and there seemed to be just two staff coping with the bar and tables. Eventually I had to ask for our table to be cleared as when we have finished and are feeling full I hate having the food siting in front of me for ages.

Came here as it’s had numerous great reviews but sadly we found the standard way under par. It felt a bit claustrophobic but we put that down to its popularity and as we'd booked we really wanted to test the roast. Can’t fault the beef but the vegetables were bland, overcooked and we presumed frozen not fresh, the stuffing was different and it would have been nice to know exactly what it was. All in all although edible, I think the tastiest bit was the horseradish sauce so sadly we won’t be returning.
